If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is
crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must
master it.”

tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my
master.
Then he and the men with him
ate and
drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way to my
master.”
And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath

cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who
curse you be

master’s wife, Behold, my
master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
But he refused. “Look,” he said to his
master’s wife, “with me here, my
master does not

kindled.

And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
So Joseph’s master took him and had him thrown into the prison where the king’s prisoners were confined. While Joseph was there in the prison,

downcast today?”
Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.
Is this not the cup my
master drinks from and uses for
divination? What you have done is wicked!’”
Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of
Canaan: how then should we
steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?
We even brought back to you from the land of
Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we
steal silver or gold from your
master’s house?
If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.
If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.
And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:
But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children; I do not want to go free,’
Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.

If she please not her
master, who hath
betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt
deceitfully with her.
If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master who had designated her for himself, he must allow her to be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, since he has broken faith with her.

neighbor’s property.
And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in
carving of timber, to work in all manner of
workmanship.
to cut gemstones for settings, and to
carve wood, so that he may be a
master of every craft.
And he said, It is not the voice of them that
shout for
mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
But Moses replied: “It is neither the cry of victory nor the cry of defeat; I hear the sound of singing!”
And in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in

And when they were by
Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his
master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and
lodge in it.
When they were near
Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his
master, “Please, let us stop at this Jebusite city and
spend the night here.”
And his
master said unto him, We will not turn aside
hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
But his master replied, “We will not turn aside to the city of foreigners, where there are no Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.”
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the
master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
And the man, the
master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not do this wicked thing! After all, this man is a
guest in my house. Do not commit this
outrage.
Then came the woman in the
dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
Early that morning, the woman went back to the house where her
master was staying,
collapsed at the
doorway, and lay there until it was light.
And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his
concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the
threshold.
In the morning, when her
master got up and opened the doors of the house to go out on his journey, there was his
concubine,
collapsed in the
doorway of the house, with her hands on the
threshold.
And he said unto his men, The LORD
forbid that I should do this thing unto my
master, the LORD’S
anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the
anointed of the LORD.
So he said to his men, “The LORD
forbid that I should do such a thing to my
master, the LORD’s
anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.”
And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of
Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his
master.
But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of
Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their
masters.
But one of the young men told
Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to
salute our
master; and he railed on them.
Meanwhile, one of Nabal’s young men informed Nabal’s wife
Abigail, “Look, David sent messengers from the wilderness to
greet our
master, but he
scolded them.
Now therefore know and consider what thou
wilt do; for evil is determined against our
master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of
Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
Now consider carefully what you must do, because
disaster looms over our
master and all his household. For he is such a
scoundrel that
nobody can speak to him!”
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your
master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his
master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his
master than with the heads of our men?
Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master’s servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.
Now then, get up early in the morning, along with your master’s servants who came with you, and go as soon as it is light.”
And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my
master left me, because three days
agone I fell sick.
Then David asked him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me three days ago when I fell ill.
And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said,
Swear unto me by God, that thou
wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my
master, and I will bring thee down to this company.
“Will you lead me to these raiders?” David asked. And the man replied, “
Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hand of my
master, and I will lead you to them.”
Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye
valiant: for your
master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have
anointed me king over them.
Now then, be strong and
courageous, for though Saul your lord is dead, the house of Judah has
anointed me as their king.”
Then the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy
master’s son all that
pertained to Saul and to all his house.
Then the king summoned Saul’s servant Ziba and said to him, “I have given to your master’s grandson all that belonged to Saul and to all his house.
Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy
master’s son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy
master’s son shall eat bread
alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
You and your sons and servants are to work the ground for him and bring in the harvest, so that your master’s grandson may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the palace with all his
master’s servants; he did not go down to his house.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my
master Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him
drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah
drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his
cot with his
master’s servants, but he did not go home.
And I gave thee thy
master’s house, and thy
master’s wives into thy
bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.
I gave your master’s house to you and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more.
And the king said, And where is thy
master’s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said,
Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.
“Where is your
master’s grandson?” asked the king. And Ziba answered, “Indeed, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he has said, ‘
Today, the house of Israel will restore to me the kingdom of my
grandfather.’”
And God
stirred him up another
adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah:
And God raised up against Solomon another
adversary, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his
master, Hadadezer king of Zobah,
And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold,
Elijah is here.
“It is I,” he answered. “Go tell your
master, ‘
Elijah is here!’”
And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold,
Elijah is here.
And now you say, ‘Go tell your
master that
Elijah is here!’
And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no
master: let them return every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no
master; let each one return home in peace.’”
And the sons of the prophets that were at
Bethel came forth to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy
master from thy head to day? And he said,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the prophets at
Bethel came out to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your
master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And the sons of the prophets that were at
Jericho came to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy
master from thy head to day? And he answered,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the prophets at
Jericho came up to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your
master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy
master: lest
peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
“Look now,” they said to
Elisha, “we your servants have fifty
valiant men. Please let them go and search for your
master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,”
Elisha replied.
Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his
master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given
deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a
leper.
Now
Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of
Aram, was a great man in his
master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to
Aram. And he was a mighty man of
valor, but he was a
leper.
And she said unto her
mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his
leprosy.
She said to her
mistress, “If only my
master would go to the prophet who is in Samaria, he would cure him of his
leprosy.”
And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the
maid that is of the land of Israel.
And
Naaman went and told his
master what the
girl from the land of Israel had said.
In this thing the LORD
pardon thy servant, that when my
master goeth into the house of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of
Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of
Rimmon, the LORD
pardon thy servant in this thing.
Yet may the LORD
forgive your servant this one thing: When my
master goes into the temple of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my arm, and I bow down in the temple of
Rimmon, may the LORD
forgive your servant in this matter.”
But Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my
master hath
spared Naaman this
Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.
Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, “Look, my
master has
spared this
Aramean,
Naaman, while not accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”
But he went in, and stood before his
master. And
Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no
whither.
When Gehazi went in and stood before his
master,
Elisha asked him, “Gehazi, where have you been?” “Your servant did not go
anywhere,” he replied.
But as one was felling a beam, the
axe head fell into the water: and he
cried, and said,
Alas,
master! for it was borrowed.
As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron
axe head fell into the water. “Oh, my
master,” he
cried out, “it was borrowed!”
And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and
chariots. And his servant said unto him,
Alas, my
master! how shall we do?
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, an army with horses and
chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked
Elisha, “Oh, my
master, what are we to do?”
And he answered, Thou shalt not
smite them: wouldest thou
smite those whom thou hast taken
captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their
master.
“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and
drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their
master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their
master. And the
Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
But
Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his
master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his
master’s footsteps behind him?”
So he departed from
Elisha, and came to his
master; who said to him, What said
Elisha to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest surely recover.
So
Hazael left
Elisha and went to his
master, who asked him, “What did
Elisha say to you?” And he replied, “He told me that you would surely recover.”
And thou shalt
smite the house of
Ahab thy
master, that I may
avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of
Jezebel.
And you are to strike down the house of your
master Ahab, so that I may
avenge the blood of My servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of the LORD shed by the hand of
Jezebel.
Then
Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this
mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.
When
Jehu went out to the servants of his
master, they asked, “Is everything all right? Why did this
madman come to you?” “You know his kind and their
babble,” he replied.
And as
Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who
slew his
master?
And as
Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, O Zimri, murderer of your
master?”
Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your
master’s sons are with you, and there are with you
chariots and horses, a
fenced city also, and armour;
“When this letter arrives, since your
master’s sons are with you and you have
chariots and horses, a fortified city and
weaponry,
Look even out the best and meetest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.
select the best and most worthy son of your master, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.”
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will
hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your
master’s sons, and come to me to
Jezreel by to
morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
Then
Jehu wrote them a second letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your
master’s sons to me at
Jezreel by this time
tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I
conspired against my
master, and
slew him: but who
slew all these?
The next morning,
Jehu went out and stood before all the people and said, “You are innocent. It was I who
conspired against my
master and killed him. But who killed all these?
Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Now, therefore, make a
bargain with my
master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
How then
wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my
master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for
chariots and for
horsemen?
For how can you
repel a single officer among the least of my
master’s servants when you depend on Egypt for
chariots and
horsemen?
But
Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my
master sent me to thy
master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you.
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my
master sent me to speak these words only to you and your
master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of
Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his
master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that are left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his
master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that still survives.”
And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your
master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who replied, “Tell your
master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
