A living reference built from six public-domain sources, with tools you won't find on a typical online dictionary.
Four dictionaries and encyclopedias in one search
- Webster's 1913 and Webster's 1828 — search either edition, or both at once.
- Encyclopædia Britannica, 9th Edition (1875–1889) — long-form articles, many signed by their original contributors.
- Watson's Biblical and Theological Dictionary (1833) — doctrinal essays alongside plain definitions.
- Switch editions anytime from Settings, or search "Both" to compare an 1828 definition against its 1913 successor side by side.
A built-in thesaurus
- Roget's Thesaurus (1911 edition) — search any word to see every one of Roget's
categories it belongs to, shown in full alongside your dictionary and encyclopedia results, not just a
bare list of synonyms.
- Nothing filtered out — obsolete words and foreign-language phrases are included and labeled,
exactly as the original marks them. See the Attributions page for one
thing worth knowing about this particular edition.
The Bible, built in
- Verse tooltips — every Bible reference inside a definition or article (e.g. Rom. viii. 28) is underlined; hover or tap to read the verse without leaving the page.
- Two translations — the King James Version and the Berean Standard Bible, a free modern-English translation. Choose one, or view both side by side, verse by verse.
- Bible search — search the Bible itself, not just the dictionary. Results appear in their own tab, with a full searchable, paginated list for anything with more than a handful of matches.
- Word of the Day — a genuinely obscure word, pulled from the dictionaries and hand-filtered for rarity, waiting under the search box every day of the year.
Reading tools
- Auto-linked cross-references — any word inside a definition that's also a headword becomes a clickable link, with a hover preview of its own definition.
- Illustrations — restored engravings from Webster's 1890/1900 international editions, shown beside the entries they illustrate.
- Print-ready formatting — paginated, properly typeset printing for any dictionary or encyclopedia entry, in Letter or A4.
- Dark and light themes — switch anytime in Settings; the whole site, including tooltips and the Bible comparison view, follows your choice.
Everywhere you read
- Browser extension — right-click any word or short hyphenated phrase on any website to look it up here instantly.
- Mobile-friendly — every page, including the print view and the full Bible search, adapts to a phone screen.
Built for trust
- Fully public domain — every text and image on this site is free of copyright, with full attribution and source details on the Attributions page.
- No tracking — a handful of cookies remember your display preferences. Nothing else is collected. See the Privacy Policy.
