Abram said, Lord GOD, what
wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the
steward of my house is this
Eliezer of Damascus?
But
Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?”
And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and
slay, and make ready; for these men shall
dine with me at
noon.

steward of his house, “Take these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for they shall

And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,
So they approached Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.
And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you
treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought
Simeon out unto them.
“It is fine,” said the
steward. “Do not be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, gave you the
treasure that was in your sacks. I received your silver.” Then he brought
Simeon out to them.
And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their

donkeys.
And he commanded the
steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his
sack’s mouth.

instructed his
steward: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each one’s silver in the mouth of his
sack.
And put my cup, the silver cup, in the
sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.
Put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s
sack, along with the silver for his grain.” So the

steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou

And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.
When the steward overtook them, he relayed these words to them.
And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be
blameless.
“As you say,” replied the
steward. “But only the one who is found with the cup will be my slave, and the rest of you shall be free of
blame.”
And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s
sack.

steward searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest—and the cup was found in Benjamin’s
sack.

Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
Azariah,
Then Daniel said to the

Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them

manager any longer.’
Then the
steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the
stewardship: I cannot

blameless, as the
steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon
angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to
filthy lucre;
As God’s
steward, an
overseer must be above reproach—not self-absorbed, not quick-tempered, not given to
drunkenness, not violent, not
greedy for money.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good
