And
conspired all of
them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.
And Judah said,
The strength of
the bearers of burdens is decayed, and
there is much
rubbish; so that we are not able to build
the wall.
Meanwhile,
the people of Judah said: “
The strength of
the laborer fails, and
there is so much
rubble that we will never be able to rebuild
the wall.”
And our
adversaries said,
They shall not know, neither see, till we come in
the midst among
them, and
slay them, and cause
the work to cease.
And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”
And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
So I stationed men behind
the lowest sections of
the wall, at
the vulnerable areas. I stationed
them by families with
their swords, spears, and bows.
And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
After I had made an inspection, I stood up and said to
the nobles,
the officials, and
the rest of
the people, “Do not be afraid of
them. Remember
the Lord, who is great and
awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought
their counsel to
nought, that we returned all of us to
the wall, every one unto his work.
When our enemies heard that we were aware of
their scheme and that God had
frustrated it, each of us returned to his own work on
the wall.
And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
And from that day on, half of my servants did
the work while
the other half held spears, shields, bows, and
armor.
The officers stationed
themselves behind all
the people of Judah
They which builded on
the wall, and
they that bare burdens, with those that
laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in
the work, and with
the other hand held a weapon.
who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried materials worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other.
For
the builders, every one had his sword
girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded
the trumpet was by me.
And each of
the builders worked with his sword
strapped at his side. But
the trumpeter stayed beside me.
And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “The work is great and extensive, and we are spread out far from one another along the wall.
In what place
therefore ye hear
the sound of
the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
Wherever you hear
the sound of
the horn,
rally to us
there. Our God will fight for us!”
So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
So we continued
the work, while half of
the men held spears from
the break of
dawn until
the stars came out.
Likewise at
the same time said I unto
the people, Let every one with his servant
lodge within Jerusalem, that in
the night
they may be a guard to us, and labour on
the day.
At that time I also said to
the people, “Let every man and his servant
spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that
they can stand guard by night and work by day.”
So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the guards with me changed out of our clothes; each carried his weapon, even to go for water.
And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.
About that time there was a great outcry from the people and their wives against their fellow Jews.
For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.
Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous. We must get grain in order to eat and stay alive.”
Some also
there were that said, We have
mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might
buy corn, because of
the dearth.
Others were saying, “We are
mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our homes to get grain during
the famine.”
There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.
Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.
Yet now our flesh is as
the flesh of our brethren, our children as
their children: and, lo, we bring into
bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto
bondage already: neither is it in our power to
redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.
We and our children are just like our countrymen and
their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already
enslaved, but we are powerless to
redeem them because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”
And I was very
angry when I heard
their cry and
these words.
When I heard
their outcry and
these complaints, I became extremely
angry,
Then I consulted with myself, and I
rebuked the nobles, and
the rulers, and said unto
them, Ye exact
usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against
them.
and after serious thought I
rebuked the nobles and officials, saying, “You are exacting
usury from your own brothers!” So I called a large assembly against
them And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
and said, “We have done our best to
buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that
they may be sold back to us!” But
they remained silent, for
they could find nothing to say.
Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?
So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our foreign enemies?
I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of
them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this
usury.
I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have been
lending the people money and grain. Please, let us stop this
usury.
Restore, I pray you, to
them, even this day,
their lands,
their vineyards,
their oliveyards, and
their houses, also
the hundredth part of
the money, and of
the corn,
the wine, and
the oil, that ye exact of
them.
Please restore to
them immediately
their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with
the percentage of
the money, grain, new wine, and oil that you have been
assessing them.”
Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
“We will restore it,” they replied, “and will require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.” So I summoned the priests and required of the nobles and officials an oath that they would do what they had promised.
Also I
shook my
lap, and said, So God
shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he
shaken out, and
emptied. And all
the congregation said,
Amen, and praised
the LORD. And
the people did according to this promise.
I also
shook out
the folds of my
robe and said, “May God likewise
shake out of His house and possession every man who does not keep this promise. May such a man be
shaken out and have nothing!”
The whole assembly said, “
Amen,” and
they praised
the LORD. And
the people did as
they had promised.
Moreover from
the time that I was appointed to be
their governor in
the land of Judah, from
the twentieth year even unto
the two and
thirtieth year of
Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten
the bread of
the governor.
Furthermore, from
the day King
Artaxerxes appointed me to be
their governor in
the land of Judah, from his
twentieth year until his thirty-second year (twelve years total), neither I nor my brothers
ate the food
allotted to
the governor.
But
the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto
the people, and had taken of
them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver;
yea, even
their servants bare rule over
the people: but so did not I, because of
the fear of God.
The governors before me had
heavily burdened
the people, taking from
them bread and wine
plus forty shekels of silver.
Their servants also
oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my fear of God.
Yea, also I continued in
the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto
the work.
Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of the wall, and all my servants were gathered there for the work; we did not acquire any land.
Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.
There were 150 Jews and officials at my table, besides the guests from the surrounding nations.
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I
the bread of
the governor, because
the bondage was heavy upon this people.
Each day one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine was provided. But I did not demand
the food
allotted to
the governor, because
the burden on
the people was so heavy.
Now it came to pass, when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and Geshem
the Arabian, and
the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded
the wall, and that
there was no breach left
therein; (though at that time I had not set up
the doors upon
the gates;)
When
Sanballat,
Tobiah, Geshem
the Arab, and
the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt
the wall and not a
gap was left—though to that time I had not yet
installed the doors in
the gates—
That
Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of
the villages in
the plain of Ono. But
they thought to do me mischief.
Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of
the villages on
the plain of Ono.” But
they were
planning to
harm me.
And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it to go down to you?”
Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave the same reply.
Then sent
Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner
the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
The fifth time,
Sanballat sent me this same message by his young servant, who had in his hand an unsealed letter
Wherein was written, It is reported among
the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and
the Jews think to
rebel: for which cause thou buildest
the wall, that thou mayest be
their king, according to
these words.
that read: “It is reported among
the nations—and Geshem agrees—that you and
the Jews are
plotting to revolt, and this is why you are building
the wall. According to
these reports, you are to become
their king,
And thou hast also appointed prophets to
preach of
thee at Jerusalem, saying,
There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to
the king according to
these words. Come now
therefore, and let us take counsel together.
and you have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to
proclaim on your behalf: ‘
There is a king in Judah.’ Soon
these rumors will reach
the ears of
the king. So come, let us
confer together.”
Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
Then I sent him this reply: “
There is nothing to
these rumors you are spreading; you are
inventing them in your own mind.”
For
they all made us afraid, saying,
Their hands shall be
weakened from
the work, that it be not done. Now
therefore, O God,
strengthen my hands.
For
they were all trying to
frighten us, saying, “
Their hands will be
weakened in
the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God,
strengthen my hands.
Afterward I came unto
the house of Shemaiah
the son of Delaiah
the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in
the house of God, within
the temple, and let us shut
the doors of
the temple: for
they will come to
slay thee;
yea, in
the night will
they come to
slay thee.
Later, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said: “Let us meet at the house of God inside the temple. Let us shut the temple doors because they are coming to kill you— by night they are coming to kill you!”
And I said, Should such a man as I
flee? and who is
there, that, being as I am, would go into
the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
But I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Should one like me go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go!”
Therefore was he
hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that
they might have matter for an evil report, that
they might reproach me.
He had been
hired to
intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so
they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
My God, think thou upon
Tobiah and
Sanballat according to
these their works, and on
the prophetess Noadiah, and
the rest of
the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
So
the wall was finished in
the twenty and fifth day of
the month
Elul, in fifty and two days.
So
the wall was completed in fifty-two days, on
the twenty-fifth of
Elul.
And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
When all our enemies heard about this, all
the surrounding nations were afraid and
disheartened, for
they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.
Moreover in those days
the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto
Tobiah, and
the letters of
Tobiah came unto
them.
Also in those days,
the nobles of Judah sent many letters to
Tobiah, and
Tobiah’s letters came back to
them.
For
there were many in Judah
sworn unto him, because he was
the son in law of Shechaniah
the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken
the daughter of Meshullam
the son of Berechiah.
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.
Also
they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
Moreover,
these nobles kept reporting to me
Tobiah’s good deeds, and
they relayed my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to
intimidate me.
Now it came to pass, when
the wall was built, and I had set up
the doors, and
the porters and
the singers and
the Levites were appointed,
When the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.
Then I put my brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem, along with Hananiah the commander of the fortress, because he was a faithful man who feared God more than most.
And I said unto
them, Let not
the gates of Jerusalem be opened until
the sun be hot; and while
they stand by, let
them shut
the doors, and bar
them: and
appoint watches of
the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.
And I told
them, “Do not open
the gates of Jerusalem until
the sun is hot. While
the guards are on duty, keep
the doors shut and securely fastened. And
appoint the residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at
their posts and some at
their own homes.”
Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.
Now
the city was large and
spacious, but
there were few people in it, and
the houses had not yet been rebuilt.
And my God put into mine heart to gather together
the nobles, and
the rulers, and
the people, that
they might be reckoned by
genealogy. And I found a register of
the genealogy of
them which came up at
the first, and found written
therein,
Then my God put it into my heart to
assemble the nobles,
the officials, and
the people to be
enrolled by
genealogy. I found
the genealogical register of those who had first returned, and I found
the following written in it:
These are
the children of
the province, that went up out of
the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;
