Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast
smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to
boast:
abide now at home; why shouldest thou
meddle to thine
hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah
with thee?
You have said, ‘Look, I have defeated
Edom,’ and your heart has become proud and
boastful. Now stay at home. Why should you
stir up trouble so that you fall—you and Judah
with you?”
And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God
with Obed-
edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of God
with Obed-
edom and in the
treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages. Then he returned to Samaria.
And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
They carried him back on horses and buried him with his fathers in the City of Judah.
He built Eloth, and restored it to Judah, after that the king
slept with his fathers.
Uzziah was the one who rebuilt Eloth and restored it to Judah after King
Amaziah rested
with his fathers.
And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
Under their authority was an army of 307,500 trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.
And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, and
slings to cast stones.
Uzziah supplied the entire army
with shields, spears, helmets,
armor, bows, and slingstones.
And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by
cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones
withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.
And in Jerusalem he made
skillfully designed devices to shoot arrows and
catapult large stones from the towers and corners. So his fame spread far and wide, for he was helped
tremendously so that he became powerful.
Then
Azariah the priest, along
with eighty
brave priests of the LORD, went in after him.
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
Then Uzziah was
wroth, and had a
censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was
wroth with the priests, the
leprosy even rose up in his
forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar.
Uzziah,
with a
censer in his hand to offer incense, was
enraged. But while he
raged against the priests in their presence in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense,
leprosy broke out on his
forehead.
So Uzziah
slept with his fathers, and they buried him
with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a
leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his
stead.
And Uzziah rested
with his fathers and was buried near them in a field of burial that belonged to the kings; for the people said, “He was a
leper.” And his son Jotham reigned in his place.
He fought also
with the king of the
Ammonites, and prevailed against them. And the children of
Ammon gave him the same year an hundred talents of silver, and ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. So much did the children of
Ammon pay unto him, both the second year, and the third.
Jotham
waged war against the king of the
Ammonites and defeated them, and that year they gave him a hundred talents of silver, ten thousand cors of wheat, and ten thousand cors of barley. They paid him the same in the second and third years.
Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.
As for the rest of the acts of Jotham, along with all his wars and his ways, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
And Jotham
slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and
Ahaz his son reigned in his
stead.
And Jotham rested
with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son
Ahaz reigned in his place.
Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they
smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them
captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who
smote him
with a great slaughter.
So the LORD his God delivered
Ahaz into the hand of the king of
Aram, who attacked him and took many
captives to Damascus.
Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him
with great force.
But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was
Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the LORD God of your fathers was
wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a
rage that reacheth up unto heaven.
But a prophet of the LORD named
Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a
rage that reaches up to heaven.
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for
bondmen and
bondwomen unto you: but are there not
with you, even
with you, sins against the LORD your God?
And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?
And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the
captives, and
with the
spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and
arrayed them, and
shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and
anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon
asses, and brought them to
Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.
Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the
captives, and provided from the
plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them
sandals and food and drink,
anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on
donkeys. So they brought them to
Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.
The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.
The Philistines had also
raided the cities of the foothills and the Negev of Judah, capturing and occupying Beth-shemesh,
Aijalon, and Gederoth, as well as Soco, Timnah, and Gimzo
with their villages.
And
Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the
sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and
Hezekiah his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Ahaz rested
with his fathers and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son
Hezekiah reigned in his place.
Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to
astonishment, and to
hissing, as ye see
with your eyes.
Therefore, the wrath of the LORD has fallen upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror,
horror, and
mockery, as you can see
with your own eyes.
Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.
Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger will turn away from us.
Then they went in to
Hezekiah the king, and said, We have
cleansed all the house of the LORD, and the altar of burnt offering,
with all the vessels thereof, and the
shewbread table,
with all the vessels thereof.
Then they went in to King
Hezekiah and reported, “We have
cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering
with all its utensils, and the table of the
showbread with all its utensils.
And the priests killed them, and they made
reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an
atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.
And the priests slaughtered the goats and put their blood on the altar for a sin offering, to make
atonement for all Israel, because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.
And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD
with cymbals,
with psalteries, and
with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of
Gad the king’s
seer, and
Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.
Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD
with cymbals, harps, and lyres according to the command of David, of
Gad the king’s
seer, and of
Nathan the prophet. For the command had come from the LORD through His prophets.
And the Levites stood
with the instruments of David, and the priests
with the
trumpets.
The Levites stood
with the instruments of David, and the priests
with the
trumpets.
And
Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering upon the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD began also
with the
trumpets, and
with the instruments ordained by David king of Israel.
And
Hezekiah ordered that the burnt offering be sacrificed on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD and the
trumpets began as well, accompanied by the instruments of David king of Israel.
And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped.
When the offerings were completed, the king and all those present with him bowed down and worshiped.
Moreover
Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the LORD
with the words of David, and of
Asaph the
seer. And they
sang praises
with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped.
Then King
Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to sing praises to the LORD in the words of David and of
Asaph the
seer. So they
sang praises
with gladness and bowed their heads and worshiped.
And also the burnt offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and the drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of the house of the LORD was set in order.
Furthermore, the burnt offerings were abundant, along
with the fat of the peace offerings and the drink offerings for the burnt offerings. So the service of the house of the LORD was established.
So the posts went
with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah
with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days
with great
gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing
with loud instruments unto the LORD.
The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of
Unleavened Bread for seven days
with great joy, and the Levites and priests praised the LORD day after day, accompanied by loud instruments of praise to the LORD.
And the whole assembly took counsel to keep other seven days: and they kept other seven days
with gladness.
The whole assembly agreed to observe seven more days, so they observed seven days with joy.
And all the congregation of Judah,
with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah,
rejoiced.
Then the whole assembly of Judah
rejoiced along
with the priests and Levites and the whole assembly that had come from Israel, including the foreigners who had come from Israel and those who lived in Judah.
Then
Hezekiah questioned
with the priests and the Levites concerning the heaps.
Then
Hezekiah questioned the priests and Levites about the heaps,
And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it
with all his heart, and
prospered.
He was
diligent in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law and the commandments, in order to seek his God. And so he
prospered.
He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.
he consulted
with his leaders and commanders about
stopping up the waters of the springs outside the city, and they helped him carry it out.
Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall
without, and repaired
Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and
reinforced the supporting terraces of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
Be strong and
courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is
with him: for there be more
with us than
with him:
“Be strong and
courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria and the vast army
with him, for there is a greater One
with us than
with him.
With him is an arm of flesh; but
with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
With him is only the arm of flesh, but
with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the people were strengthened by the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against
Lachish, and all his power
with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem
with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
Then they
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to
affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
Then the Assyrians called out loudly in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to
frighten and
terrify them in order to capture the city.
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned
with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own
bowels slew him there
with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he
withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him down
with the sword.
And
Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the
sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And
Manasseh his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Hezekiah rested
with his fathers and was buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son
Manasseh reigned in his place.
And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of
Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used
witchcraft, and dealt
with a familiar spirit, and
with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of
Hinnom. He practiced
sorcery,
divination, and
witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took
Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him
with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.
So the LORD brought against them the military commanders of the king of Assyria, who captured
Manasseh, put a hook in his nose, bound him
with bronze
shackles, and took him to Babylon.
Now after this he built a wall
without the city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the
fenced cities of Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
And he took away the strange gods, and the
idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.
He removed the foreign gods and the
idol from the house of the LORD, along
with all the altars he had built on the temple mount and in Jerusalem, and he
dumped them outside the city.
Now the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, and his prayer unto his God, and the words of the seers that spake to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, along
with his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, they are indeed written in the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
So
Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Manasseh rested
with his fathers and was buried at his palace. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
And so did he in the cities of
Manasseh, and Ephraim, and
Simeon, even unto
Naphtali,
with their mattocks round about.
And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and
Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and
Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.
And the men did the work faithfully. The Levites overseeing them were Jahath and
Obadiah, descendants of Merari, and
Zechariah and Meshullam, descendants of
Kohath. Other Levites, all skilled
with musical instruments,
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger
with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger
with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be
quenched.’
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his
testimonies, and his statutes,
with all his heart, and
with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.
So the king stood by the
pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes
with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book.
And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.
They set aside the burnt offerings to be given to the divisions of the families of the people to offer to the LORD, as is written in the Book of Moses; and they did the same with the bulls.
And they
roasted the
passover with fire according to the
ordinance: but the other holy offerings
sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the people.
They
roasted the
Passover animals on the fire according to the regulation, and they boiled the other holy offerings in pots, kettles, and
bowls and quickly brought them to all the people.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed
with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do
with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is
with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is
with me, or He will destroy you!”
Nevertheless
Josiah would not turn his face from him, but
disguised himself, that he might fight
with him, and
hearkened not unto the words of
Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of
Megiddo.
Josiah, however, did not turn away from him; instead, in order to
engage him in battle, he
disguised himself. He did not
listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of God, but went to fight him on the Plain of
Megiddo.
Now the rest of the acts of
Josiah, and his goodness, according to that which was written in the law of the LORD,
As for the rest of the acts of
Josiah, along
with his deeds of loving devotion according to what is written in the Law of the LORD—
And when the year was
expired, king
Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon,
with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made
Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.
In the spring, King
Nebuchadnezzar summoned
Jehoiachin and brought him to Babylon, along
with the articles of value from the house of the LORD. And he made
Jehoiachin’s relative
Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.
Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who
slew their young men
with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no
compassion upon young man or
maiden, old man, or him that
stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.
So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary,
sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm. God gave them all into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar,
And they burnt the house of God, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof
with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the palaces and destroyed every article of value.
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his God be
with him, and may he go up.’”
Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his God be
with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel; He is the God who is in Jerusalem.
And
whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him
with silver, and
with gold, and
with goods, and
with beasts, beside the
freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.
And let every
survivor, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of that region
with silver, gold, goods, and
livestock, along
with a
freewill offering for the house of God in Jerusalem.’”
Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.
So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along
with the priests and Levites—
everyone whose spirit God had
stirred—prepared to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.
And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.
And all their neighbors supported them
with articles of silver and gold,
with goods and
livestock, and
with valuables, in addition to all their
freewill offerings.
All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.
In all, there were 5,400 gold and silver articles. Sheshbazzar brought all these along when the exiles went up from Babylon to Jerusalem.
Which came
with Zerubbabel: Jeshua,
Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah,
Mordecai, Bilshan, Mizpar, Bigvai, Rehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:
accompanied by
Zerubbabel, Jeshua,
Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah,
Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. This is the count of the men of Israel:
And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest
with Urim and
with Thummim.
The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest to
consult the
Urim and
Thummim.
So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings
thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.
Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along
with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;
They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in accordance with what is written, and they offered burnt offerings daily based on the number prescribed for each day.
Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to set forward the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites.
So Jeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Yehudah), and the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers—all Levites—joined together to
supervise those working on the house of God.
And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their
apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of
Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the
ordinance of David king of Israel.
When the builders had laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests in their
apparel with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of
Asaph)
with cymbals, took their positions to praise the LORD, as David king of Israel had prescribed.
And they
sang together by course in praising and giving
thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people
shouted with a great
shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
And they
sang responsively
with praise and
thanksgiving to the LORD: “For He is good; for His loving devotion to Israel endures
forever.” Then all the people gave a great
shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD had been laid.
But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes,
wept with a loud voice; and many
shouted aloud for joy:
But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple
wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this temple. Still, many others
shouted joyfully.
So that the people could not
discern the noise of the
shout of joy from the noise of the
weeping of the people: for the people
shouted with a loud
shout, and the noise was heard
afar off.
The people could not distinguish the shouts of joy from the sound of
weeping, because the people were making so much noise. And the sound was heard from
afar.
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build
with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build
with you because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
But
Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do
with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But
Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part
with us in building a house for our God, since we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a
rebellious city, and
hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved
sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
that a search should be made of the record books of your fathers. In these books you will discover and
verify that the city is a
rebellious city,
harmful to kings and provinces,
inciting sedition from ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.
Then rose up
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and
with them were the prophets of God helping them.
Then
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak rose up and began to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were
with them, helping them.
Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of
Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded
with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.
Let it be known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. The people are rebuilding it
with large stones, and placing timbers in the walls. This work is being carried out
diligently and is
prospering in their hands.
And there was found at
Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of the Medes, a roll, and therein was a record thus written:
And a
scroll was found in the fortress of
Ecbatana, in the province of Media,
with the following written on it:
Memorandum:
With three rows of great stones, and a row of new timber: and let the expences be given out of the king’s house:
with three layers of cut stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid from the royal treasury.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
Also I have made a decree, that
whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be
hanged thereon; and let his house be made a
dunghill for this.
I also decree that if any man interferes
with this directive, a beam is to be
torn from his house and raised up, and he is to be impaled on it. And his own house shall be made a pile of
rubble for this
offense.
And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I
Darius have made a decree; let it be done
with speed.
May God, who has caused His Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to alter this decree or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I,
Darius, have issued the decree. Let it be carried out
with diligence.
And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the
dedication of this house of God
with joy,
Then the people of Israel—the priests, the Levites, and the rest of the exiles—celebrated the
dedication of the house of God
with joy.
And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the
filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of Israel, did eat,
The Israelites who had returned from exile
ate it, together
with all who had separated themselves from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to seek the LORD, the God of Israel.
And kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days
with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to
strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
For seven days they kept the Feast of
Unleavened Bread
with joy, because the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them to
strengthen their hands in the work on the house of the God of Israel.
And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of
Artaxerxes the king.
So in the seventh year of King
Artaxerxes, he went up to Jerusalem
with some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants.
I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own
freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go
with thee.
I
hereby decree that any
volunteers among the Israelites in my kingdom, including the priests and Levites, may go up
with you to Jerusalem.
And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose
habitation is in Jerusalem,
Moreover, you are to take with you the silver and gold that the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem,
And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon,
with the
freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem:
together
with all the silver and gold you may find in all the province of Babylon, as well as the
freewill offerings of the people and priests to the house of their God in Jerusalem.
That thou mayest
buy speedily
with this money bullocks, rams, lambs,
with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.
With this money, therefore, you are to
buy as many bulls, rams, and lambs as needed, together
with their grain offerings and drink offerings, and offer them on the altar at the house of your God in Jerusalem.
And
whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do
with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.
You and your brothers may do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God.
