Neither shall he
profane his seed
among his people: for I the LORD do
sanctify him.
so that he does not
defile his offspring
among his people, for I am the LORD who sanctifies him.”
Say unto them,
Whosoever he be of all your seed
among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel
hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.
Tell them that for the generations to come, if any of their descendants in a state of uncleanness approaches the sacred offerings that the Israelites
consecrate to the LORD, that person must be cut off from My presence. I am the LORD.
Neither shall ye
profane my holy name; but I will be
hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which
hallow you,
You must not
profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged as holy
among the Israelites. I am the LORD who sanctifies you,
For
whatsoever soul it be that shall not be
afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from
among his people.
If
anyone does not humble himself on this day, he must be cut off from his people.
And
whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from
among his people.
I will destroy from
among his people
anyone who does any work on this day.
And the son of an
Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out
among the children of Israel: and this son of the
Israelitish woman and a man of Israel
strove together in the camp;
Now the son of an
Israelite mother and an Egyptian father went out
among the Israelites, and a fight broke out in the camp between him and an
Israelite.
And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.
So whatever belongs to the Levites may be redeemed—a house sold in a city they possess—and must be released in the
Jubilee, because the houses in the cities of the Levites are their possession
among the Israelites.
And if thy brother be
waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt
relieve him:
yea, though he be a stranger, or a
sojourner; that he may live with thee.
Now if your
countryman becomes destitute and cannot support himself
among you, then you are to help him as you would a foreigner or stranger, so that he can continue to live
among you.
Take thou no
usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.
Do not take any interest or profit from him, but fear your God, that your
countryman may live
among you.
And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be
waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not
compel him to serve as a
bondservant:
If a
countryman among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, then you must not force him into slave labor.
Moreover of the children of the strangers that do
sojourn among you, of them shall ye
buy, and of their families that are with you, which they
begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
You may also purchase them from the foreigners residing among you or their clans living among you who are born in your land. These may become your property.
And if a
sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or
sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family:
If a foreigner residing
among you prospers, but your
countryman dwelling near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the foreigner or to a member of his clan,
And I will set my tabernacle
among you: and my soul shall not
abhor you.
And I will make My dwelling place
among you, and My soul will not
despise you.
And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.
I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people.
I will also send wild beasts
among you, which shall
rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be
desolate.
I will send wild animals against you to
rob you of your children, destroy your
livestock, and reduce your numbers, until your roads lie
desolate.
And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall
avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the
pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
And I will bring a sword against you to
execute the
vengeance of the covenant. Though you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague
among you, and you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
And I will
scatter you
among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be
desolate, and your cities waste.
But I will
scatter you
among the nations and will draw out a sword after you as your land becomes
desolate and your cities are laid waste.
And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.
You will perish
among the nations, and the land of your enemies will
consume you.
And if it be of an unclean beast, then he shall
redeem it according to thine
estimation, and shall add a fifth part of it
thereto: or if it be not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to thy
estimation.
But if it is
among the unclean animals, then he may
redeem it according to your
valuation and add a fifth of its value. If it is not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to your
valuation.
But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.
The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.
Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel:
“Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.
But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses.
But the Levites were not counted among the other Israelites, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel.
Assign the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they have been given exclusively to him from
among the Israelites.
And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from
among the children of Israel instead of all the
firstborn that openeth the
matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;
“Behold, I have taken the Levites from
among the children of Israel in place of every
firstborn Israelite from the
womb. The Levites belong to Me,
And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am the LORD) instead of all the
firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings
among the cattle of the children of Israel.
You are to take the Levites for Me—I am the LORD—in place of all the
firstborn of Israel, and the
livestock of the Levites in place of all the
firstborn of the
livestock of the Israelites.”
And Moses numbered, as the LORD commanded him, all the
firstborn among the children of Israel.
So Moses numbered all the
firstborn of the Israelites, as the LORD had commanded him.
Take the Levites instead of all the
firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am the LORD.
“Take the Levites in place of all the
firstborn of Israel, and the
livestock of the Levites in place of their
livestock. The Levites belong to Me; I am the LORD.
And thou shalt give the money,
wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed, unto Aaron and to his sons.
Give the money to Aaron and his sons as the
redemption price for the excess
among the Israelites.”
Take the sum of the sons of
Kohath from
among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers,
“Take a census of the Kohathites among the Levites by their clans and families,
Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:
“Do not allow the Kohathite
tribal clans to be cut off from
among the Levites.
Both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they
defile not their camps, in the midst
whereof I dwell.
You must send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not
defile their camp, where I dwell
among them.”
Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of
cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a
curse and an oath
among thy people, when the LORD
doth make thy
thigh to
rot, and thy
belly to swell;
And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be
defiled, and have done
trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the
curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her
belly shall swell, and her
thigh shall
rot: and the woman shall be a
curse among her people.
When he has made her drink the water, if she has
defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a
curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her
belly will swell, her
thigh will
shrivel, and she will become
accursed among her people.
Take the Levites from
among the children of Israel, and
cleanse them.
“Take the Levites from
among the Israelites and make them
ceremonially clean.
Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine.
In this way you shall separate the Levites from the rest of the Israelites, and the Levites will belong to Me.
For they are wholly given unto me from
among the children of Israel; instead of such as open every
womb, even instead of the
firstborn of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto me.
For the Levites have been wholly given to Me from
among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself in place of all who come first from the
womb, the
firstborn of all the sons of Israel.
And I have taken the Levites for all the
firstborn of the children of Israel.
But I have taken the Levites in place of all the
firstborn among the sons of Israel.
And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from
among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of the congregation, and to make an
atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague
among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come
nigh unto the sanctuary.
And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from
among the Israelites, to perform the service for the Israelites at the Tent of Meeting and to make
atonement on their behalf, so that no plague will come against the Israelites when they approach the sanctuary.”
And those men said unto him, We are
defiled by the dead body of a man: wherefore are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the LORD in his appointed season
among the children of Israel?
and said to Moses, “We are unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be excluded from presenting the LORD’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?”
But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the
passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from
among his people: because he brought not the offering of the LORD in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.
But if a man who is
ceremonially clean and is not on a journey still fails to observe the
Passover, he must be cut off from his people, because he did not present the LORD’s offering at its appointed time. That man will bear the consequences of his sin.
And if a stranger shall
sojourn among you, and will keep the
passover unto the LORD; according to the
ordinance of the
passover, and according to the manner thereof, so shall he do: ye shall have one
ordinance, both for the stranger, and for him that was born in the land.
If a foreigner dwelling
among you wants to observe the
Passover to the LORD, he is to do so according to the
Passover statute and its ordinances. You are to apply the same statute to both the foreigner and the native of the land.’”
And when the people
complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was
kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt
among them, and consumed them that were in the
uttermost parts of the camp.
Soon the people began to
complain about their
hardship in the hearing of the LORD, and when He heard them, His anger was
kindled, and fire from the LORD
blazed among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp.
And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.
So that place was called Taberah, because the fire of the LORD had burned among them.
And the
mixt multitude that was
among them fell a
lusting: and the children of Israel also
wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
Meanwhile, the
rabble among them had a strong
craving for other food, and again the Israelites
wept and said, “Who will feed us meat?
But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be
loathsome unto you: because that ye have
despised the LORD which is
among you, and have
wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?
but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and makes you
nauseous—because you have rejected the LORD, who is
among you, and have
cried out before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’”
And Moses said, The people,
among whom I am, are six hundred thousand
footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.
But Moses replied, “Here I am among 600,000 men on foot, yet You say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat for a month.’
But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was
Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they
prophesied in the camp.
Two men, however, had remained in the camp—one named
Eldad and the other Medad—and the Spirit rested on them. They were
among those listed, but they had not gone out to the tent, and they
prophesied in the camp.
And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet
among you, I, the LORD, will
reveal Myself to him in a vision; I will speak to him in a dream.
Send thou men, that they may search the land of
Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler
among them.
“Send out for
yourself men to
spy out the land of
Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each of their fathers’ tribes send one man who is a leader
among them.”
And Joshua the son of
Nun, and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
Joshua son of
Nun and
Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were
among those who had
spied out the land,
tore their clothes
And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people
provoke me? and how long will it be
ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed
among them?
And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people treat Me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in Me,
despite all the signs I have performed
among them?
And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
But Moses said to the LORD, “The Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought this people from among them.
And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art
among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by
daytime in a
pillar of a cloud, and in a
pillar of fire by night.
And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have already heard that You, O LORD, are in the midst of this people, that You, O LORD, have been seen face to face, that Your cloud stands over them, and that You go before them in a
pillar of cloud by day and a
pillar of fire by night.
Go not up, for the LORD is not
among you; that ye be not
smitten before your enemies.
Do not go up, lest you be struck down by your enemies, because the LORD is not among you.
And if a stranger
sojourn with you, or
whosoever be
among you in your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do.
And for the generations to come, if a foreigner residing with you or someone else
among you wants to prepare an offering made by fire as a pleasing
aroma to the LORD, he is to do exactly as you do.
Even all that the LORD hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the LORD commanded Moses, and
henceforward among your generations;
all that the LORD has commanded you through Moses from the day the LORD gave them and continuing through the generations to come—
And it shall be
forgiven all the congregation of the children of Israel, and the stranger that sojourneth
among them; seeing all the people were in ignorance.
Then the whole congregation of Israel and the foreigners residing
among them will be
forgiven, since it happened to all the people
unintentionally.
Ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them.
You shall have the same law for the one who acts in error, whether he is a native-born
Israelite or a foreigner residing
among you.
But the soul that doeth ought
presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from
among his people.
But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native or foreigner, blasphemes the LORD. That person shall be cut off from among his people.
And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is
among them: wherefore then lift ye up
yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?
They came together against Moses and Aaron and told them, “You have taken too much upon
yourselves! For
everyone in the entire congregation is holy, and the LORD is in their midst. Why then do you
exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”
Separate
yourselves from
among this congregation, that I may
consume them in a moment.
“Separate
yourselves from this congregation so that I may
consume them in an instant.”
They, and all that
appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from
among the congregation.
They went down alive into
Sheol with all they owned. The earth closed over them, and they
vanished from the assembly.
Get you up from
among this congregation, that I may
consume them as in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.
“Get away from this congregation so that I may
consume them in an instant.” And Moses and Aaron fell facedown.
And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun
among the people: and he put on incense, and made an
atonement for the people.
So Aaron took the
censer as Moses had ordered and ran into the midst of the assembly. And seeing that the plague had begun
among the people, he offered the incense and made
atonement for the people.
And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod
apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was
among their rods.
So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff—one for each of the leaders of their tribes, twelve staffs in all. And Aaron’s staff was among them.
And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel: to you they are given as a gift for the LORD, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Behold, I Myself have selected your fellow Levites from the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the LORD to perform the service for the Tent of Meeting.
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.
Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.
But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.
But the
tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an
heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to
inherit: therefore I have said unto them,
Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
For I have given to the Levites as their inheritance the
tithe that the Israelites present to the LORD as a contribution. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance
among the Israelites.”
And he that gathereth the ashes of the
heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth
among them, for a statute for ever.
The man who has gathered up the ashes of the
heifer must also wash his clothes, and he will be
ceremonially unclean until evening. This is a permanent statute for the Israelites and for the foreigner residing
among them.
But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not
purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from
among the congregation, because he hath
defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not been
sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.
But if a person who is unclean does not
purify himself, he will be cut off from the assembly, because he has
defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of
purification has not been
sprinkled on him; he is unclean.
This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel
strove with the LORD, and he was
sanctified in them.
These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and He showed His
holiness among them.
And the LORD sent
fiery serpents
among the people, and they
bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
So the LORD sent
venomous snakes
among the people, and many of the Israelites were
bitten and died.
For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.
For I see them from
atop the rocky cliffs, and I watch them from the hills. Behold, a people dwelling apart, not
reckoning themselves
among the nations.
He hath not
beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen
perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the
shout of a king is
among them.
He considers no
disaster for Jacob; He sees no trouble for Israel. The LORD their God is with them, and the
shout of the King is
among them.
And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.
Then
Balaam saw Amalek and lifted up an
oracle, saying: “Amalek was first
among the nations, but his end is destruction.”
And when
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from
among the congregation, and took a
javelin in his hand;
On seeing this,
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a
spear in his hand,
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was
zealous for my sake
among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
“
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was
zealous for My sake
among them, so that I did not
consume the Israelites in My zeal.
Now the name of the
Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house
among the Simeonites.
The name of the
Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.
Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.
“The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
According to the lot shall the possession thereof be divided between many and few.
Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
The
registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered
among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them
among the Israelites.
But
among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of
Sinai.
Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of
Sinai.
Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of
Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.
“Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not
among the followers of
Korah who gathered together against the LORD. Instead, he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons.
Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan because he had no sons? Give us property among our father’s brothers.”
The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
“The daughters of Zelophehad speak correctly. You certainly must give them property as an inheritance among their father’s brothers, and transfer their father’s inheritance to them.
And they
slew the kings of
Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of
Midian:
Balaam also the son of Beor they
slew with the sword.
Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of
Midian. They also killed
Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of
Balaam, to commit
trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague
among the congregation of the LORD.
“Look, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of
Balaam, to turn unfaithfully against the LORD at Peor, so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,
But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions
among you in the land of
Canaan.
But if they do not arm themselves and go across with you, then they must accept their possession
among you in the land of
Canaan.”
For the Egyptians buried all their
firstborn, which the LORD had
smitten among them: upon their gods also the LORD executed judgments.
who were
burying all their
firstborn, whom the LORD had struck down
among them; for the LORD had executed judgment against their gods.
And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance
among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man’s inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall
inherit.
And you are to divide the land by lot according to your clans. Give a larger inheritance to a larger clan and a smaller inheritance to a smaller one. Whatever falls to each one by lot will be his. You will receive an inheritance according to the tribes of your fathers.
And
among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall
appoint for the
manslayer, that he may
flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.
Six of the cities you give the Levites are to be appointed as cities of refuge, to which a
manslayer may
flee. In addition to these, give the Levites forty-two other cities.
These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the
sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may
flee thither.
These six cities will serve as a refuge for the Israelites and for the foreigner or stranger
among them, so that
anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there.
Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the LORD dwell
among the children of Israel.
Do not
defile the land where you live and where I dwell. For I, the LORD, dwell
among the Israelites.”
Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
Choose for
yourselves wise, understanding, and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will
appoint them as your leaders.”
So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over
fifties, and captains over tens, and officers
among your tribes.
So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them as leaders over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of
fifties, and of tens, and as officers for your tribes.
and the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:
The plan seemed good to me, so I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.
And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not
among you; lest ye be
smitten before your enemies.
But the LORD said to me, “Tell them not to go up and fight, for I am not with you to keep you from defeat by your enemies.”
And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the
brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from
among the host, as the LORD
sware unto them.
The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the
Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had
sworn to them.
