The princes also of Pharaoh saw her,
and commended her before Pharaoh:
and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.
When Pharaoh’s officials saw Sarai, they
commended her to him,
and she was taken into the palace of Pharaoh.
And he
entreated Abram well for her sake:
and he had sheep,
and oxen,
and he
asses,
and menservants,
and maidservants,
and she
asses,
and camels.
He treated
Abram well on her account,
and Abram acquired sheep
and cattle, male
and female
donkeys, menservants
and maidservants,
and camels.
And the LORD plagued Pharaoh
and his house with great plagues because of Sarai
Abram’s wife.
The LORD, however,
afflicted Pharaoh
and his household with severe plagues because of
Abram’s wife Sarai.
And Pharaoh called
Abram,
and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why
didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?
So Pharaoh summoned
Abram and asked, “What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?
Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.
Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”
And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.
Then Pharaoh gave his men orders concerning
Abram,
and they sent him away with his wife
and all his possessions.
And Abram went up out of Egypt, he,
and his wife,
and all that he had,
and Lot with him, into the south.
So
Abram went up out of Egypt into the Negev—he
and his wife
and all his possessions—
and Lot was with him.
And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver,
and in gold.
And Abram had become extremely wealthy in
livestock and silver
and gold.
And he went on his journeys from the south even to
Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between
Bethel and Hai;
From the Negev he journeyed from place to place toward
Bethel, until he came to the place between
Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched,
Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first:
and there
Abram called on the name of the LORD.
to the site where he had built the altar.
And there
Abram called on the name of the LORD.
And Lot also, which went with
Abram, had flocks,
and herds,
and tents.
Now Lot, who was traveling with
Abram, also had flocks
and herds
and tents.
And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
But the land was unable to support both of them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to
coexist.
And there was a
strife between the herdmen of
Abram’s cattle
and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle:
and the
Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
And there was discord between the herdsmen of
Abram and the herdsmen of Lot. At that time the
Canaanites and the
Perizzites were also living in the land.
And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no
strife, I pray thee, between me
and thee,
and between my herdmen
and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
So
Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no
contention between you
and me, or between your herdsmen
and my herdsmen. After all, we are brothers.
And Lot lifted up his eyes,
and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed
Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
And Lot looked out
and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan, all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed
Sodom and Gomorrah.)
Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself
and set out toward the east.
And Abram and Lot parted company.
Abram dwelled in the land of
Canaan,
and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain,
and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
Abram lived in the land of
Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain
and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
But the men of
Sodom were wicked
and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
But the men of
Sodom were wicked,
sinning greatly against the LORD.
And the LORD said unto
Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes,
and look from the place where thou art northward,
and southward,
and eastward,
and westward:
After Lot had departed, the LORD said to
Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are,
and look to the north
and south
and east
and west,
For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
for all the land that you see, I will give to you
and your offspring
forever.
And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.
Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”
Then
Abram removed his tent,
and came
and dwelt in the plain of
Mamre, which is in
Hebron,
and built there an altar unto the LORD.
So
Abram moved his tent
and went to live near the Oaks of
Mamre at
Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.
And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of
Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar,
Chedorlaomer king of
Elam,
and Tidal king of nations;
In those days Amraphel king of
Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar,
Chedorlaomer king of
Elam,
and Tidal king of Goiim
That these made war with Bera king of
Sodom,
and with Birsha king of
Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah,
and Shemeber king of Zeboiim,
and the king of
Bela, which is Zoar.
went to war against Bera king of
Sodom, Birsha king of
Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim,
and the king of
Bela (that is, Zoar).
And in the
fourteenth year came
Chedorlaomer,
and the kings that were with him,
and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim,
and the Zuzims in
Ham,
and the
Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
In the
fourteenth year,
Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out
and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites in
Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-kiriathaim,
And the Horites in their mount
Seir, unto El-
paran, which is by the wilderness.
and the Horites in the area of Mount
Seir, as far as El-
paran, which is near the desert.
And they returned,
and came to En-mishpat, which is Kadesh,
and smote all the country of the
Amalekites,
and also the
Amorites that dwelt in Hazezon-tamar.
Then they turned back to
invade En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh),
and they conquered the whole territory of the
Amalekites, as well as the
Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.
And there went out the king of
Sodom,
and the king of
Gomorrah,
and the king of Admah,
and the king of Zeboiim,
and the king of
Bela (the same is Zoar;)
and they joined battle with them in the
vale of Siddim;
Then the king of
Sodom, the king of
Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim,
and the king of
Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out
and arrayed themselves for battle in the Valley of Siddim
With
Chedorlaomer the king of
Elam,
and with Tidal king of nations,
and Amraphel king of
Shinar,
and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.
against
Chedorlaomer king of
Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of
Shinar,
and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.
And the
vale of Siddim was full of slimepits;
and the kings of
Sodom and Gomorrah fled,
and fell there;
and they that remained fled to the mountain.
Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits,
and as the kings of
Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some men fell into the pits, but the survivors fled to the hill country.
The four kings seized all the goods of
Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food,
and they went on their way.
And they took Lot,
Abram’s brother’s son, who dwelt in
Sodom,
and his goods,
and departed.
They also carried off
Abram’s nephew Lot
and his possessions, since Lot was living in
Sodom.
And there came one that had escaped,
and told
Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of
Mamre the Amorite, brother of
Eshcol,
and brother of Aner:
and these were
confederate with
Abram.
Then an escapee came
and reported this to
Abram the Hebrew. Now
Abram was living near the Oaks of
Mamre the Amorite, a brother of
Eshcol and Aner, all of whom were bound by treaty to
Abram.
And when
Abram heard that his brother was taken
captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred
and eighteen,
and pursued them unto
Dan.
And when
Abram heard that his relative had been captured, he
mobilized the 318 trained men born in his household,
and they set out in pursuit as far as
Dan.
And he divided himself against them, he
and his servants, by night,
and smote them,
and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
During the night,
Abram divided his forces
and routed
Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
He
retrieved all the goods, as well as his relative Lot
and his possessions, together with the women
and the rest of the people.
And the king of
Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of
Chedorlaomer,
and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s
dale.
After
Abram returned from defeating
Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of
Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
And Melchizedek king of
Salem brought forth bread
and wine:
and he was the priest of the most high God.
Then
Melchizedek king of
Salem brought out bread
and wine—since he was priest of God Most High—
And he blessed him,
and said, Blessed be
Abram of the most high God,
possessor of heaven
and earth:
and he blessed
Abram and said: “Blessed be
Abram by God Most High,
Creator of heaven
and earth,
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.
And he gave him
tithes of all.
and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then
Abram gave
Melchizedek a tenth of everything.
And the king of
Sodom said unto
Abram, Give me the persons,
and take the goods to
thyself.
And Abram said to the king of
Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the
possessor of heaven
and earth,
But
Abram replied to the king of
Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD God Most High,
Creator of heaven
and earth,
That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet,
and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made
Abram rich:
that I will not accept even a thread, or a
strap of a
sandal, or anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I have made
Abram rich.’
Save only that which the young men have eaten,
and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner,
Eshcol,
and Mamre; let them take their portion.
I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten
and the share for the men who went with me—Aner,
Eshcol,
and Mamre. They may take their portion.”
After these things the word of the LORD came unto
Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not,
Abram: I am thy shield,
and thy exceeding great reward.
After these events, the word of the LORD came to
Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid,
Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
And Abram said, Lord GOD, what
wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless,
and the
steward of my house is this
Eliezer of Damascus?
But
Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless,
and the heir of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?”
And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed:
and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
Abram continued, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own
bowels shall be thine heir.
Then the word of the LORD came to
Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.”
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look to the heavens and count the stars, if you are able.” Then He told him, “So shall your offspring be.”
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Abram believed the LORD,
and it was credited to him as righteousness.
And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of
Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to
inherit it.
The LORD also told him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of
Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall
inherit it?
But
Abram replied, “Lord GOD, how can I know that I will possess it?”
And he said unto him, Take me an
heifer of three years old,
and a she goat of three years old,
and a ram of three years old,
and a
turtledove,
and a young
pigeon.
And the LORD said to him, “Bring Me a
heifer, a goat,
and a ram, each three years old, along with a
turtledove and a young
pigeon.”
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
So
Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them down the middle,
and laid the
halves opposite each other. The birds, however, he did not cut in half.
And when the fowls came down upon the carcases,
Abram drove them away.
And the birds of prey descended on the
carcasses, but
Abram drove them away.
And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon
Abram;
and, lo, an
horror of great darkness fell upon him.
As the sun was setting,
Abram fell into a deep sleep,
and suddenly great terror
and darkness
overwhelmed him.
And he said unto
Abram, Know of a
surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs,
and shall serve them;
and they shall
afflict them four hundred years;
Then the LORD said to
Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not their own,
and they will be
enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
But I will judge the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will depart with many possessions.
And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.
And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
When the sun had set
and darkness had fallen, behold, a smoking
firepot and a flaming
torch appeared
and passed between the
halves of the
carcasses.
Now Sarai
Abram’s wife bare him no children:
and she had an
handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was
Hagar.
And Sarai said unto
Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my
maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her.
And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
So Sarai said to
Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my
maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.”
And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
And Sarai
Abram’s wife took
Hagar her
maid the Egyptian, after
Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of
Canaan,
and gave her to her husband
Abram to be his wife.
So after he had lived in
Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian
maidservant Hagar and gave her to
Abram to be his wife.
And he went in unto
Hagar,
and she conceived:
and when she saw that she had conceived, her
mistress was
despised in her eyes.
And Sarai said unto
Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my
maid into thy
bosom;
and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me
and thee.
Then Sarai said to
Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms,
and ever since she saw that she was
pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you
and me.”
But
Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy
maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee.
And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
“Here,” said
Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated
Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
Now the angel of the LORD found
Hagar by a spring of water in the desert—the spring along the road to Shur.
“
Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from,
and where are you going?” “I am running away from my
mistress Sarai,” she replied.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy
mistress,
and submit
thyself under her hands.
So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your
mistress and submit to her authority.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child,
and shalt bear a son,
and shalt call his name
Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy
affliction.
The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived
and will bear a son.
And you shall name him
Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of
affliction.
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
He will be a wild
donkey of a man,
and his hand will be against
everyone,
and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that
seeth me?
So
Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is
located between Kadesh
and Bered.
And when
Abram was
ninety years old
and nine, the LORD appeared to
Abram,
and said unto him, I am the
Almighty God; walk before me,
and be thou perfect.
And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.”
And Abram fell on his face:
and God talked with him, saying,
Then
Abram fell facedown,
and God said to him,
As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
“As for Me, this is My covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.
And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
I will make you exceedingly fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you.
And I will establish my covenant between me
and thee
and thy seed after thee in their generations for an
everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee,
and to thy seed after thee.
I will establish My covenant as an
everlasting covenant between Me
and you
and your descendants after you, to be your God
and the God of your descendants after you.
And I will give unto thee,
and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of
Canaan, for an
everlasting possession;
and I will be their God.
And to you
and your descendants I will give the land where you are residing—all the land of
Canaan—as an eternal possession;
and I will be their God.”
And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
God also said to Abraham, “You must keep My covenant—you and your descendants in the generations after you.
This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me
and you
and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be
circumcised.
This is My covenant with you
and your descendants after you, which you are to keep: Every male among you must be
circumcised.
You are to
circumcise the flesh of your
foreskin,
and this will be a sign of the covenant between Me
and you.
And he that is eight days old shall be
circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
Generation after generation, every male must be
circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household
and those purchased from a foreigner—even those who are not your offspring.
He that is born in thy house,
and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be
circumcised:
and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an
everlasting covenant.
Whether they are born in your household or purchased, they must be
circumcised. My covenant in your flesh will be an
everlasting covenant.
But if any male is not
circumcised, he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but
Sarah shall her name be.
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai, for her name is to be
Sarah.
And I will
bless her,
and give thee a son also of her:
yea, I will
bless her,
and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
And I will
bless her
and will surely give you a son by her. I will
bless her,
and she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will descend from her.”
Then Abraham fell upon his face,
and laughed,
and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old?
and shall
Sarah, that is
ninety years old, bear?
Abraham fell facedown. Then he
laughed and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can
Sarah give birth at the age of
ninety?”
And Abraham said unto God, O that
Ishmael might live before thee!
And Abraham said to God, “O that
Ishmael might live under Your blessing!”
And God said,
Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed;
and thou shalt call his name Isaac:
and I will establish my covenant with him for an
everlasting covenant,
and with his seed after him.
But God replied, “Your wife
Sarah will indeed bear you a son,
and you are to name him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an
everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
And as for
Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him,
and will make him fruitful,
and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he
beget,
and I will make him a great nation.
As for
Ishmael, I have heard you,
and I will surely
bless him; I will make him fruitful
and multiply him greatly. He will become the father of twelve rulers,
and I will make him into a great nation.
