Yea, when they had made them a
molten calf, and said, This is thy
God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;
Even when they cast for themselves an image of a
calf and said, ‘This is your
God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and when they committed terrible blasphemies,
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
So now, our
God, the great and mighty and
awesome God who keeps His
gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the
hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until
today.
And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the
porters, the singers, the
Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of
God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
“The rest of the people—the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the people of the land to obey the Law of God—along with their wives and all their sons and daughters who are able to understand,
They
clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a
curse, and into an oath, to walk in
God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of
God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;
hereby join with their noble brothers and commit themselves with a
sworn oath to follow the Law of
God given through His servant Moses and to carefully obey all the commandments, ordinances, and statutes of the LORD our Lord.
Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a
shekel for the service of the house of our
God;
We also place ourselves under the obligation to
contribute a third of a
shekel yearly for the service of the house of our
God:
For the
shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an
atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our
God.
for the
showbread, for the regular grain offerings and burnt offerings, for the Sabbath offerings, for the New Moons and appointed feasts, for the holy offerings, for the sin offerings to make
atonement for Israel, and for all the duties of the house of our
God.
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:
We have cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people for the
donation of wood by our families at the appointed times each year. They are to bring it to the house of our
God to burn on the altar of the LORD our
God, as it is written in the Law.
Also the
firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our
God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our
God:
And we will bring the
firstborn of our sons and our
livestock, as it is written in the Law, and will bring the
firstborn of our herds and flocks to the house of our
God, to the priests who minister in the house of our
God.
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our
dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our
God; and the
tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the
tithes in all the cities of our
tillage.
Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our
God the firstfruits of our
dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive
tithes in all the towns where we labor.
And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take
tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the
tithe of the
tithes unto the house of our
God, to the chambers, into the
treasure house.
A priest of Aaron’s line is to
accompany the Levites when they collect the tenth, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of these
tithes to the storerooms of the treasury in the house of our
God.
For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the
porters, and the singers: and we will not
forsake the house of our
God.
For the Israelites and the Levites are to bring the contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers stay. Thus we will not neglect the house of our God.”
Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of
Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, was the ruler of the house of
God.
Jedaiah son of Joiarib;
Jachin; Seraiah son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of
Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the chief official of the house of
God;
And Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the chief of the Levites, had the oversight of the outward business of the house of God.
Shabbethai and Jozabad, two leaders of the Levites, who
supervised the work outside the house of
God;
The
overseer also of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha. Of the sons of
Asaph, the singers were over the business of the house of
God.
Now the
overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of
Mica. He was one of
Asaph’s descendants, who were the singers in charge of the service of the house of
God.
And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise and to give
thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of
God, ward over against ward.
The leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, along with their associates, who stood across from them to give praise and
thanksgiving as one section alternated with the other, as prescribed by David the man of
God.
And his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azarael, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of
God, and
Ezra the
scribe before them.
and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—with the musical instruments prescribed by David the man of
God.
Ezra the
scribe led the
procession.
So stood the two companies of them that gave
thanks in the house of
God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me:
The two
thanksgiving choirs then stood in the house of
God, as did I, along with the half of the officials accompanying me,
Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and
rejoiced: for
God had made them
rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children
rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even
afar off.
On that day they offered great sacrifices,
rejoicing because
God had given them great joy. The women and children also
rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard from
afar.
And both the singers and the
porters kept the ward of their
God, and the ward of the
purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.
They performed the service of their
God and the service of
purification, along with the singers and gatekeepers, as David and his son Solomon had prescribed.
For in the days of David and
Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and
thanksgiving unto
God.
For long ago, in the days of David and
Asaph, there were directors for the singers and for the songs of praise and
thanksgiving to
God.
On that day they read in the book of Moses in the
audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the
Ammonite and the
Moabite should not come into the congregation of
God for ever;
At that time the Book of Moses was read
aloud in the hearing of the people, and in it they found the passage stating that no
Ammonite or
Moabite should ever enter the assembly of
God,
Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but
hired Balaam against them, that he should
curse them:
howbeit our
God turned the
curse into a blessing.
because they had not met the Israelites with food and water, but had
hired Balaam to call down a
curse against them (although our
God had turned the
curse into a blessing).
And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our
God, was allied unto
Tobiah:
Now before this, Eliashib the priest, a relative of
Tobiah, had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our
God And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for
Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of
God.
to return to Jerusalem. Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had done on behalf of
Tobiah by providing him a room in the courts of the house of
God.
Then I commanded, and they
cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of
God, with the meat offering and the
frankincense.
Then I ordered that the rooms be
purified, and I had the articles of the house of
God restored to them, along with the grain offerings and
frankincense.
Then
contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of
God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
So I
rebuked the officials and asked, “Why has the house of
God been neglected?” Then I gathered the Levites and singers together and stationed them at their posts,
Remember me, O my
God, concerning this, and
wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my
God, and for the offices thereof.
Remember me for this, O my
God, and do not
blot out my deeds of loving devotion for the house of my
God and for its services.
Did not your fathers thus, and did not our
God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by
profaning the sabbath.
Did not your forefathers do the same things, so that our
God brought all this
disaster on us and on this city? And now you are
rekindling His wrath against Israel by
profaning the Sabbath!”
And I commanded the Levites that they should
cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to
sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my
God, concerning this also, and
spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.
Then I
instructed the Levites to
purify themselves and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me for this as well, O my
God, and show me mercy according to Your abundant loving devotion.
And I
contended with them, and
cursed them, and
smote certain of them, and
plucked off their hair, and made them
swear by
God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for
yourselves.
I
rebuked them and called down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath before
God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or for
yourselves!
Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his
God, and
God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did
outlandish women cause to sin.
Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations, and he was loved by his God, who made him king over all Israel—yet foreign women drew him into sin.
Shall we then
hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to
transgress against our
God in marrying strange wives?
Must we now hear that you too are doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”
Remember them, O my
God, because they have
defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.
Remember them, O my
God, because they have
defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.
And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
I also arranged for contributions of wood at the appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, with favor.
There was a man in the land of
Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared
God, and
eschewed evil.
There was a man in the land of
Uz whose name was Job. And this man was
blameless and upright, fearing
God and
shunning evil.
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have
sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to
purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have
sinned and
cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
Now there was a day when the sons of
God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan came also among them.
One day the sons of
God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan also came with them.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth
God, and escheweth evil?
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears
God and shuns evil.”
Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear
God for nothing?
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The fire of
God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
In all this, Job did not sin or charge
God with
wrongdoing.
Again there was a day when the sons of
God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
On another day the sons of
God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan also came with them to present himself before Him.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth
God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears
God and shuns evil. He still retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still retain your
integrity?
Curse God and die!”
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the
foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of
God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
“You speak as a
foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from
God only good and not
adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
Let that day be darkness; let not
God regard it from above, neither let the light
shine upon it.
If only that day had turned to darkness! May
God above disregard it; may no light
shine upon it.
Why is light given to a man whose way is
hid, and whom
God hath
hedged in?
Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom
God has
hedged in?
By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger they are consumed.
Shall
mortal man be more just than
God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
‘Can a
mortal be more righteous than
God, or a man more pure than his Maker?
Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
If God puts no trust in His servants, and He charges His angels with error,
I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him—
Blessed indeed is the man whom
God corrects; so do not
despise the discipline of the
Almighty.
For the arrows of the
Almighty are within me, the poison
whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of
God do set themselves in
array against me.
For the arrows of the
Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of
God are
arrayed against me.
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
If only my request were granted and
God would
fulfill my hope:
Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
that
God would be willing to
crush me, to
unleash His hand and cut me off!
But if you would earnestly seek
God and ask the
Almighty for mercy,
So are the paths of all that
forget God; and the
hypocrite’s hope shall perish:
Such is the
destiny of all who
forget God; so the hope of the
godless will perish.
Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
“
Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a
mortal be righteous before
God?
If he will
contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
If one wished to
contend with
God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath
hardened himself against him, and hath
prospered?
God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and
prospered?
If
God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do
stoop under him.
God does not restrain His anger; the helpers of
Rahab cower beneath Him.
I will say unto
God, Do not
condemn me;
shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.
But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
But if only God would speak and open His lips against you,
And that he would
shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that
God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves.
Canst thou by searching find out
God? canst thou find out the
Almighty unto perfection?
Can you
fathom the deep things of
God or discover the limits of the
Almighty?
I am as one
mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon
God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is
laughed to
scorn.
The tabernacles of robbers
prosper, and they that
provoke God are secure; into whose hand
God bringeth abundantly.
The tents of robbers are safe, and those who
provoke God are secure— those who carry their
god in their hands.
With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.
Wisdom and strength belong to God; counsel and understanding are His.
Surely I would speak to the
Almighty, and I desire to reason with
God.
Yet I desire to speak to the
Almighty and
argue my case before
God.
Will ye speak wickedly for
God? and talk
deceitfully for him?
Will you speak wickedly on
God’s behalf or speak
deceitfully for Him?
Will ye accept his person? will ye
contend for
God?
He also shall be my salvation: for an
hypocrite shall not come before him.
Moreover, this will be my salvation, for no godless man can appear before Him.
Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before
God.
But you even undermine the fear of
God and hinder
meditation before Him.
Hast thou heard the secret of
God? and
dost thou restrain wisdom to
thyself?
Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
Are the consolations of God not enough for you, even words spoken gently to you?
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
as you turn your spirit against God and pour such words from your mouth?
Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints;
yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
If God puts no trust in His holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in His eyes,
For he stretcheth out his hand against
God, and strengtheneth himself against the
Almighty.
For he has stretched out his hand against
God and has
vaunted himself against the
Almighty,
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
He will not escape from the darkness; the flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
For the company of the
godless will be barren, and fire will
consume the tents of
bribery.
God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.
God has delivered me to unjust men; He has thrown me to the
clutches of the wicked.
My friends
scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto
God.
My friends are my scoffers as my eyes pour out tears to God.
Oh that one might
plead for a man with
God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!
Oh, that a man might
plead with
God as he pleads with his
neighbor!
The upright are
appalled at this, and the innocent are
stirred against the
godless.
Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.
Surely such is the dwelling of the wicked and the place of one who does not know God.”
Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net.
then understand that it is God who has wronged me and drawn His net around me.
Have
pity upon me, have
pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of
God hath touched me.
Have
pity on me, my friends, have
pity, for the hand of
God has struck me.
Why do ye
persecute me as
God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
Why do you
persecute me as
God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh?
And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the
hypocrite but for a moment?
the triumph of the wicked has been brief and the joy of the
godless momentary?
He hath
swallowed down riches, and he shall
vomit them up again:
God shall cast them out of his
belly.
He
swallows wealth but vomits it out;
God will force it from his stomach.
When he is about to fill his
belly,
God shall cast the
fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.
When he has filled his stomach,
God will
vent His
fury upon him, raining it down on him as he eats.
The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.
The possessions of his house will be removed, flowing away on the day of God’s wrath.
This is the portion of a wicked man from
God, and the
heritage appointed unto him by
God.
This is the wicked man’s portion from God, the inheritance God has appointed him.”
Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
Their homes are safe from fear; no rod of punishment from God is upon them.
Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
Yet they say to God: ‘Leave us alone! For we have no desire to know Your ways.
How
oft is the
candle of the wicked put out! and how
oft cometh their destruction upon them!
God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? Does
disaster come upon them? Does
God, in His anger,
apportion destruction?
