And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
And Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.
And they left the house of the LORD
God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their
trespass.
They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and idols. So wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.
And the Spirit of
God came upon
Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith
God, Why
transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot
prosper? because ye have
forsaken the LORD, he hath also
forsaken you.
Then the Spirit of
God came upon
Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the people and said to them, “This is what
God says: ‘Why do you
transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot
prosper? Because you have
forsaken the LORD, He has
forsaken you.’”
For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had
forsaken the LORD
God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against
Joash.
Although the
Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great army. Because Judah had
forsaken the LORD, the
God of their fathers, judgment was executed on
Joash.
Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of
God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And
Amaziah his son reigned in his
stead.
The accounts of the sons of
Joash, as well as the many pronouncements about him and about the restoration of the house of
God, are indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And his son
Amaziah reigned in his place.
But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
But a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel—not with any of the Ephraimites.
But if thou
wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle:
God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for
God hath power to help, and to cast down.
Even if you go and fight
bravely in battle,
God will make you
stumble before the enemy, for
God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
And
Amaziah said to the man of
God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of
God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
Amaziah asked the man of
God, “What should I do about the hundred talents I have given to the army of Israel?” And the man of
God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
Now it came to pass, after that
Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the
gods of the children of
Seir, and set them up to be his
gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
When
Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the
gods of the Seirites, set them up as his own
gods, bowed before them, and burned sacrifices to them.
Wherefore the anger of the LORD was
kindled against
Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the
gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against
Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet, who said, “Why have you sought this people’s
gods, which could not deliver them from your hand?”
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that
God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that
God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
But
Amaziah would not hear; for it came of
God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the
gods of
Edom.
But
Amaziah would not
listen, for this had come from
God in order to deliver them into the hand of Jehoash, because they had sought the
gods of
Edom.
And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of
God with Obed-
edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of
God with Obed-
edom and in the
treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages. Then he returned to Samaria.
And he sought
God in the days of
Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of
God: and as long as he sought the LORD,
God made him to
prosper.
He sought
God throughout the days of
Zechariah, who
instructed him in the fear of
God. And as long as he sought the LORD,
God gave him success.
And
God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-
baal, and the Mehunims.
God helped him against the Philistines, against the Arabs living in Gur-
baal, and against the Meunites.
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he
transgressed against the LORD his
God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
But when Uzziah grew powerful, his
arrogance led to his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his
God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD
God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God.
So Jotham grew powerful because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.
Wherefore the LORD his
God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they
smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them
captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who
smote him with a great slaughter.
So the LORD his
God delivered
Ahaz into the hand of the king of
Aram, who attacked him and took many
captives to Damascus.
Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force.
For Pekah the son of Remaliah
slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one day, which were all
valiant men; because they had
forsaken the LORD
God of their fathers.
For in one day Pekah son of Remaliah killed 120,000
valiant men in Judah. This happened because they had
forsaken the LORD, the
God of their fathers.
But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was
Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the LORD
God of your fathers was
wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a
rage that reacheth up unto heaven.
But a prophet of the LORD named
Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the
God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a
rage that reaches up to heaven.
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for
bondmen and
bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your
God?
And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?
For he sacrificed unto the
gods of Damascus, which
smote him: and he said, Because the
gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
Since Damascus had defeated him, he sacrificed to their
gods and said, “Because the
gods of the kings of
Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these
gods were the
downfall of
Ahaz and of all Israel.
And
Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of
God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of
God, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.
Then
Ahaz gathered up the articles of the house of
God, cut them into pieces, shut the doors of the house of the LORD, and set up altars of his own on every street corner in Jerusalem.
And in every several city of Judah he made high places to burn incense unto other
gods, and
provoked to anger the LORD
God of his fathers.
In every city of Judah he built high places to offer incense to other
gods, and so he
provoked the LORD, the
God of his fathers.
For our fathers have
trespassed, and done that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD our
God, and have
forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the
habitation of the LORD, and turned their backs.
For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him.
Also they have shut up the doors of the
porch, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt offerings in the holy place unto the
God of Israel.
They also shut the doors of the
portico and
extinguished the lamps. They did not burn incense or present burnt offerings in the Holy Place of the
God of Israel.
Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.
Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger will turn away from us.
And
Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that
God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
Then
Hezekiah and all the people
rejoiced at what
God had prepared for the people, because everything had been accomplished so quickly.
And
Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and
Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the
passover unto the LORD
God of Israel.
Then
Hezekiah sent word throughout all Israel and Judah, and he also wrote letters to Ephraim and
Manasseh inviting them to come to the house of the LORD in Jerusalem to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the
God of Israel.
So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan, that they should come to keep the
passover unto the LORD
God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.
So they established a decree to
circulate a
proclamation throughout Israel, from
Beersheba to
Dan, that the people should come to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the
God of Israel, in Jerusalem. For they had not observed it as a nation as prescribed.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which
trespassed against the LORD
God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to
desolation, as ye see.
Do not be like your fathers and brothers who were unfaithful to the LORD, the
God of their fathers, so that He made them an object of
horror, as you can see.
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield
yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath
sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your
God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.
Now do not
stiffen your necks as your fathers did. Submit to the LORD and come to His sanctuary, which He has consecrated
forever. Serve the LORD your
God, so that His fierce anger will turn away from you.
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your
God is
gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.
For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and sons will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and will return to this land. For the LORD your
God is
gracious and
merciful; He will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”
Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.
Moreover, the power of God was on the people in Judah to give them one heart to obey the command of the king and his officials according to the word of the LORD.
And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of
God: the priests
sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites.
They stood at their prescribed posts, according to the Law of Moses the man of
God. The priests
sprinkled the blood, which they received from the hand of the Levites.
That prepareth his heart to seek
God, the LORD
God of his fathers, though he be not
cleansed according to the
purification of the sanctuary.
who sets his heart on seeking
God—the LORD, the
God of his fathers—even if he is not
cleansed according to the
purification rules of the sanctuary.”
And
Hezekiah spake
comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD
God of their fathers.
And
Hezekiah encouraged all the Levites who performed
skillfully before the LORD. For seven days they
ate their assigned portion, sacrificing
fellowship offerings and giving
thanks to the LORD, the
God of their fathers.
Then the priests the Levites arose and blessed the people: and their voice was heard, and their prayer came up to his holy dwelling place, even unto heaven.
Then the priests and the Levites stood to
bless the people, and
God heard their voice, and their prayer came into His holy dwelling place in heaven.
And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the
tithe of oxen and sheep, and the
tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their
God, and laid them by heaps.
And the Israelites and Judahites who lived in the cities of Judah also brought a
tithe of their herds and flocks and a
tithe of the holy things consecrated to the LORD their
God, and they laid them in large heaps.
And Jehiel, and Azaziah, and Nahath, and
Asahel, and Jerimoth, and Jozabad, and Eliel, and Ismachiah, and Mahath, and Benaiah, were overseers under the hand of Cononiah and Shimei his brother, at the commandment of
Hezekiah the king, and
Azariah the ruler of the house of
God.
Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath,
Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah were overseers under the authority of Conaniah and his brother Shimei, by appointment of King
Hezekiah and of
Azariah the chief official of the house of
God.
And Kore the son of Imnah the
Levite, the porter toward the east, was over the
freewill offerings of
God, to distribute the oblations of the LORD, and the most holy things.
Kore son of Imnah the
Levite, the keeper of the East Gate, was in charge of the
freewill offerings given to
God, distributing the contributions to the LORD and the consecrated gifts.
And thus did
Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the LORD his
God.
So this is what
Hezekiah did throughout Judah. He did what was good and upright and true before the LORD his
God.
And in every work that he began in the service of the house of
God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his
God, he did it with all his heart, and
prospered.
He was
diligent in every work that he began in the service of the house of
God, and in the law and the commandments, in order to seek his
God. And so he
prospered.
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our
God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our
God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the people were strengthened by the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
Is not
Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and
thirst when he says, ‘The LORD our
God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria?’
Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?
Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of these nations ever been able to deliver their land from my hand?
Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no
god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your
God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no
god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your
God deliver you from my hand!”
And his servants spake yet more against the LORD
God, and against his servant
Hezekiah.
And the servants of
Sennacherib spoke further against the LORD
God and against His servant
Hezekiah.
He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD
God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the
gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the
God of
Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
He also wrote letters
mocking the LORD, the
God of Israel, and saying against Him: “Just as the
gods of the nations did not deliver their people from my hand, so the
God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”
And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.
They spoke against the God of Jerusalem as they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth—the work of human hands.
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his
god, they that came forth of his own
bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his
god, some of his own sons struck him down with the sword.
Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.
He made cities for himself, and he acquired herds of sheep and cattle in abundance, for God gave him very great wealth.
Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to
enquire of the wonder that was done in the land,
God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent to him to inquire about the wonder that had happened in the land,
God left him alone to test him, that He might know all that was in
Hezekiah’s heart.
And he set a carved image, the
idol which he had made, in the house of
God, of which
God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:
Manasseh even took the carved image he had made and set it up in the house of
God, of which
God had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name
forever.
And when he was in
affliction, he
besought the LORD his
God, and humbled himself greatly before the
God of his fathers,
And in his distress,
Manasseh sought the favor of the LORD his
God and earnestly humbled himself before the
God of his fathers.
And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his
supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew that the LORD he was
God.
And when he prayed to Him, the LORD received his
plea and heard his petition; so He brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew that the LORD is
God.
And he took away the strange
gods, and the
idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.
He removed the foreign
gods and the
idol from the house of the LORD, along with all the altars he had built on the temple mount and in Jerusalem, and he
dumped them outside the city.
And he repaired the altar of the LORD, and sacrificed
thereon peace offerings and
thank offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the LORD
God of Israel.
Then he restored the altar of the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings and
thank offerings on it, and he told Judah to serve the LORD, the
God of Israel.
Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.
Nevertheless, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.
Now the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, and his prayer unto his
God, and the words of the seers that spake to him in the name of the LORD
God of Israel, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, along with his prayer to his
God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the
God of Israel, they are indeed written in the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
His prayer also, and how
God was intreated of him, and all his sin, and his
trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and
graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.
His prayer and how
God received his
plea, as well as all his sin and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself, they are indeed written in the Records of the Seers.
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the
God of David his father: and in the
twelfth year he began to
purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images.
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young,
Josiah began to seek the
God of his father David, and in the
twelfth year he began to
cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images.
Now in the
eighteenth year of his reign, when he had
purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his
God.
Now in the
eighteenth year of his reign, in order to
cleanse the land and the temple,
Josiah sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his
God.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of
God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of
God, which the Levites at the doors had collected from the people of
Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the
remnant of Israel, Judah, and Benjamin, and from the people of Jerusalem.
And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,
And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other
gods, that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other
gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be
quenched.’
And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to
enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD
God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
Because thine heart was tender, and thou
didst humble
thyself before
God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst
thyself before me, and
didst rend thy clothes, and
weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before
God when you heard His words against this place and against its people, and because you have humbled
yourself before Me and you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
Then he had
everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin take a stand in agreement to it. So all the people of Jerusalem carried out the covenant of
God, the
God of their fathers.
And
Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that
pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their
God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the
God of their fathers.
And
Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required
everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their
God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the
God of their fathers.
And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,
To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD,
Josiah said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your
God and His people Israel.
And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and
Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of
God, gave unto the priests for the
passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.
His officials also contributed willingly to the people and priests and Levites. Hilkiah,
Zechariah, and Jehiel, the administrators of the house of
God, gave the priests 2,600
Passover offerings and 300 bulls.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for
God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with
God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty.
God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Nevertheless
Josiah would not turn his face from him, but
disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and
hearkened not unto the words of
Necho from the mouth of
God, and came to fight in the valley of
Megiddo.
Josiah, however, did not turn away from him; instead, in order to
engage him in battle, he
disguised himself. He did not
listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of
God, but went to fight him on the Plain of
Megiddo.
Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his
God.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his
God.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke for the LORD.
And the LORD
God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up
betimes, and sending; because he had
compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
Again and again the LORD, the
God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers because He had
compassion on them and on His dwelling place.
But they
mocked the messengers of
God, and
despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.
But they
mocked the messengers of
God,
despising His words and
scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His people was
stirred up beyond remedy.
Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who
slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no
compassion upon young man or
maiden, old man, or him that
stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.
So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary,
sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm.
God gave them all into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar,
And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon.
who carried off everything to Babylon—all the articles of the house of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the king and his officials.
And they burnt the house of
God, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the palaces and destroyed every article of value.
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the
God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his
God be with him, and may he go up.’”
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his
God be with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the
God of Israel; He is the
God who is in Jerusalem.
And
whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the
freewill offering for the house of
God that is in Jerusalem.
And let every
survivor, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of that region with silver, gold, goods, and
livestock, along with a
freewill offering for the house of
God in Jerusalem.’”
Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.
So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites—
everyone whose spirit
God had
stirred—prepared to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.
Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the LORD, which
Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his
gods;
King Cyrus also brought out the articles belonging to the house of the LORD that
Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the temple of his
gods.
And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place:
When they arrived at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the heads of the families gave
freewill offerings to rebuild the house of
God on its original site.
Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the
God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings
thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of
God.
Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the
God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of
God.
Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of
God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the
remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.
In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of
God in Jerusalem,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to
supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.
Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to set forward the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites.
So Jeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Yehudah), and the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers—all Levites—joined together to
supervise those working on the house of
God.
Now when the
adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD
God of Israel;
When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your
God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your
God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
But
Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our
God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD
God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But
Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our
God, since we alone must build it for the LORD, the
God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
Then ceased the work of the house of
God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
Thus the construction of the house of
God in Jerusalem ceased, and it remained at a
standstill until the second year of the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
