For all the sins of
Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they
sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in
provoking the LORD
God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
This happened because of all the sins
Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit,
provoking the LORD, the
God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
For he walked in all the way of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin
wherewith he made Israel to sin, to
provoke the LORD
God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
For he walked in all the ways of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and in his sins, which he caused Israel to commit,
provoking the LORD, the
God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
And
Ahab made a
grove; and
Ahab did more to
provoke the LORD
God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.
Then he set up an Asherah pole. Thus
Ahab did more to
provoke the LORD, the
God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel before him.
And
Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of
Gilead, said unto
Ahab, As the LORD
God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be
dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
Now
Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers of
Gilead, said to
Ahab, “As surely as the LORD lives—the
God of Israel before whom I stand—there will be neither
dew nor rain in these years except at my word!”
And she said, As the LORD thy
God liveth, I have not a
cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a
cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your
God lives, I have no bread—only a handful of flour in a
jar and a little oil in a
jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks to take home and prepare a meal for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die.”
For thus saith the LORD
God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the
cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
for this is what the LORD, the
God of Israel, says: ‘The
jar of flour will not be exhausted and the
jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain upon the face of the earth.’”
And she said unto
Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of
God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to
remembrance, and to
slay my son?
“O man of
God,” said the woman to
Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
And he
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my
God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I
sojourn, by
slaying her son?
Then he
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my
God, have You also brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, by causing her son to die?”
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my
God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my
God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”
And the woman said to
Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of
God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
Then the woman said to
Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of
God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is truth.”
As the LORD thy
God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom,
whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
As surely as the LORD your
God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation
swear that they had not found you.
And
Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long
halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be
God, follow him: but if
Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Then
Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is
God, follow Him. But if
Baal is
God, follow him.” But the people did not answer a word.
And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.”
And
Elijah said unto the prophets of
Baal, Choose you one
bullock for
yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your
gods, but put no fire under.
Then
Elijah said to the prophets of
Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for
yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your
god, but do not light the fire.”
And it came to pass at
noon, that
Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry
aloud: for he is a
god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or
peradventure he sleepeth, and must be
awaked.
At
noon Elijah began to
taunt them, saying, “
Shout louder, for he is a
god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be
awakened!”
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that
Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD
God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art
God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
At the time of the evening sacrifice,
Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD,
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are
God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these things at Your command.
Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
Answer me, O LORD! Answer me, so that this people will know that You, the LORD, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back again.”
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
When all the people saw this, they fell facedown and said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”
Then
Jezebel sent a
messenger unto
Elijah, saying, So let the
gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to
morrow about this time.
So
Jezebel sent a
messenger to
Elijah, saying, “May the
gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if by this time
tomorrow I do not make your life like the lives of those you killed!”
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto
Horeb the mount of
God.
So he got up and
ate and
drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached
Horeb, the mountain of
God.
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD
God of hosts: for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the
God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD
God of hosts: because the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the
God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And Ben-
hadad sent unto him, and said, The
gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
Then Ben-
hadad sent another message to
Ahab: “May the
gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if enough dust remains of Samaria for each of my men to have a handful.”
And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
Meanwhile, the servants of the king of
Aram said to him, “Their
gods are
gods of the hills. That is why they prevailed over us. Instead, we should fight them on the plains; surely then we will prevail.
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And set two men, sons of
Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou
didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.
But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them
testify, ‘You have
cursed both
God and the king!’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”
And there came in two men, children of
Belial, and sat before him: and the men of
Belial witnessed against him, even against
Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying,
Naboth did
blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.
And the two scoundrels came in and sat opposite
Naboth, and these men
testified against him before the people, saying, “
Naboth has
cursed both
God and the king!” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.
For he served
Baal, and worshipped him, and
provoked to anger the LORD
God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
Ahaziah served and worshiped
Baal,
provoking the LORD, the
God of Israel, to anger, just as his father had done.
And
Ahaziah fell down through a
lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go,
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the
god of
Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.
Now
Ahaziah had fallen through the
lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers and
instructed them: “Go inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the
god of
Ekron, whether I will recover from this injury.”
But the angel of the LORD said to
Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a
God in Israel, that ye go to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the
god of
Ekron?
But the angel of the LORD said to
Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no
God in Israel that you are on your way to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the
god of
Ekron?’
And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not because there is not a
God in Israel, that thou sendest to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the
god of
Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
They replied, “A man came up to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no
God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the
god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’”
Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.
Then King
Ahaziah sent to
Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. So the captain went up to
Elijah, who was sitting on top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of
God, the king declares, ‘Come down!’”
And
Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of
God, then let fire come down from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of
God, may fire come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And fire came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.
So the king sent to
Elijah another captain with his fifty men. And the captain said to
Elijah, “Man of
God, the king declares, ‘Come down at once!’”
And
Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of
God, let fire come down from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of
God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Again
Elijah replied, “If I am a man of
God, may fire come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And the fire of
God came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
besought him, and said unto him, O man of
God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
begged him, “Man of
God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants please be precious in your sight.
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the
god of
Ekron, is it not because there is no
God in Israel to
enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
And
Elijah said to King
Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says: Is there really no
God in Israel for you to inquire of His word? Is that why you have sent messengers to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the
god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.”
And he took the
mantle of
Elijah that fell from him, and
smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD
God of
Elijah? and when he also had
smitten the waters, they parted
hither and thither: and
Elisha went over.
Then he took the
cloak of
Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the waters. “Where now is the LORD, the
God of
Elijah?” he asked. And when he had struck the waters, they parted to the right and to the left, and
Elisha crossed over.
Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt. Then you and your sons can live on the remainder.”
And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.
Then the woman said to her husband, “Behold, now I know that the one who often comes our way is a holy man of God.
And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said,
Nay, my lord, thou man of
God, do not lie unto thine
handmaid.
And
Elisha declared, “At this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms.” “No, my lord,” she said. “Do not lie to your
maidservant, O man of
God.”
And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.
And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God. Then she shut the door and went out.
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the
asses, that I may run to the man of
God, and come again.
And the woman called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the
donkeys, that I may go quickly to the man of
God and return.”
So she went and came unto the man of
God to mount
Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of
God saw her
afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold,
yonder is that Shunammite:
So she set out and went to the man of
God at Mount
Carmel. When the man of
God saw her at a distance, he said to his servant Gehazi, “Look, there is the Shunammite woman.
And when she came to the man of
God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of
God said, Let her alone; for her soul is
vexed within her: and the LORD hath
hid it from me, and hath not told me.
When she reached the man of
God at the mountain, she
clung to his feet. Gehazi came over to
push her away, but the man of
God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me.”
So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the
pottage, that they
cried out, and said, O thou man of
God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.
And they poured it out for the men to eat, but when they tasted the
stew they
cried out, “There is death in the pot, O man of
God!” And they could not eat it.
And there came a man from
Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of
God bread of the firstfruits, twenty
loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the
husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.
Now a man from
Baal-shalishah came to the man of
God with a
sack of twenty
loaves of barley bread from the first ripe grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” said
Elisha.
And she said unto her
mistress, Would
God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his
leprosy.
She said to her
mistress, “If only my master would go to the prophet who is in Samaria, he would cure him of his
leprosy.”
And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I
God, to kill and to make alive, that this man
doth send unto me to recover a man of his
leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he
tore his clothes and asked, “Am I
God, killing and giving life, that this man expects me to cure a
leper? Surely you can see that he is seeking a quarrel with me!”
And it was so, when
Elisha the man of
God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
Now when
Elisha the man of
God heard that the king of Israel had
torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you
torn your clothes? Please let the man come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
But
Naaman was
wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his
God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the
leper.
But
Naaman went away
angry, saying, “I thought that he would surely come out, stand and call on the name of the LORD his
God, and wave his hand over the spot to cure my
leprosy.
Then went he down, and
dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of
God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
So
Naaman went down and
dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of
God, and his flesh was restored and became like that of a little child, and he was clean.
And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.
Then
Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of
God, stood before him, and declared, “Now I know for sure that there is no
God in all the earth except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
And
Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules’ burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other
gods, but unto the LORD.
“If you will not,” said
Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much soil as a pair of mules can carry. For your servant will never again make a burnt offering or a sacrifice to any other
god but the LORD.
But Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of
God, said, Behold, my master hath
spared Naaman this
Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.
Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of
God, said, “Look, my master has
spared this
Aramean,
Naaman, while not accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
And the man of
God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did
swim.
“Where did it fall?” asked the man of
God. And when he showed him the place, the man of
God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron
float.
And the man of
God sent unto the king of Israel, saying,
Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.
Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful passing by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of
God told him and
warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.
So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of
God had pointed out. Time and again
Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.
And when the servant of the man of
God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and
chariots. And his servant said unto him,
Alas, my master! how shall we do?
When the servant of the man of
God got up and went out early in the morning, an army with horses and
chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked
Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”
Then he said,
God do so and more also to me, if the head of
Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
He
announced, “May
God punish me, and ever so severely, if the head of
Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”
Then a lord on whose hand the king
leaned answered the man of
God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
But the officer on whose arm the king
leaned answered the man of
God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied
Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it.”
And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he
leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people
trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of
God had said, who spake when the king came down to him.
Now the king had appointed the officer on whose arm he
leaned to be in charge of the gate, but the people
trampled him in the
gateway, and he died, just as the man of
God had
foretold when the king had come to him.
And it came to pass as the man of
God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a
shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a
shekel, shall be to
morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria:
It happened just as the man of
God had told the king: “About this time
tomorrow at the gate of Samaria, two seahs of barley will sell for a
shekel, and a
seah of fine flour will sell for a
shekel.”
And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
And the officer had answered the man of
God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” So
Elisha had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”
And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of
God: and she went with her household, and
sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.
So the woman had proceeded to do as the man of
God had
instructed. And she and her household lived as foreigners for seven years in the land of the Philistines.
And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of
God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that
Elisha hath done.
Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of
God, saying, “Please relate to me all the great things
Elisha has done.”
And
Elisha came to Damascus; and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The man of
God is come
hither.
Then
Elisha came to Damascus while Ben-
hadad king of
Aram was sick, and the king was told, “The man of
God has come here.”
And the king said unto
Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the man of
God, and
enquire of the LORD by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So the king said to
Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand, go to meet the man of
God, and inquire of the LORD through him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
Elisha fixed his
gaze steadily on him until
Hazael became uncomfortable. Then the man of
God began to
weep.
And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD
God of Israel, I have
anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.
So
Jehu got up and went into the house, where the young prophet poured the oil on his head and declared, “This is what the LORD, the
God of Israel, says: ‘I
anoint you king over the LORD’s people Israel.
But
Jehu took no
heed to walk in the law of the LORD
God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of
Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.
Yet
Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction of the LORD, the
God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins that
Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.
And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and
anointed him; and they
clapped their hands, and said,
God save the king.
Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They
anointed him, and the people
clapped their hands and declared, “Long live the king!”
And the man of
God was
wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have
smitten five or six times; then hadst thou
smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt
smite Syria but
thrice.
But the man of
God was
angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down
Aram until you had put an end to it. But now you will strike down
Aram only three times.”
He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of
Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD
God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant
Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of
Gath-hepher.
This
Jeroboam restored the boundary of Israel from Lebo-
hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word that the LORD, the
God of Israel, had spoken through His servant
Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from
Gath-hepher.
Twenty years old was
Ahaz when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem, and did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD his
God, like David his father.
Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. And unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD his
God.
For so it was, that the children of Israel had
sinned against the LORD their
God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other
gods,
All this happened because the people of Israel had
sinned against the LORD their
God, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They had worshiped other
gods And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their
God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the
watchmen to the
fenced city.
The Israelites secretly did things against the LORD their
God that were not right. From
watchtower to fortified city, they built high places in all their cities.
Notwithstanding they would not hear, but
hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their
God.
But they would not
listen, and they
stiffened their necks like their fathers, who did not believe the LORD their
God.
And they left all the commandments of the LORD their
God, and made them
molten images, even two
calves, and made a
grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served
Baal.
They abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their
God and made for themselves two cast idols of
calves and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the host of heaven and served
Baal.
Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
and even Judah did not keep the commandments of the LORD their God, but lived according to the customs Israel had introduced.
Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the
God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they
slay them, because they know not the manner of the
God of the land.
So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The peoples that you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land. Because of this, He has sent lions among them, which are indeed killing them off.”
Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.
Then the king of Assyria commanded: “Send back one of the priests you carried off from Samaria, and have him go back to live there and teach the requirements of the God of the land.”
Howbeit every nation made
gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the
Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.
Nevertheless, the people of each nation continued to make their own gods in the cities where they had settled, and they set them up in the shrines that the people of Samaria had made on the high places.
And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to
Adrammelech and Anammelech, the
gods of
Sepharvaim.
the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to
Adrammelech and Anammelech the
gods of
Sepharvaim.
They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
They worshiped the LORD, but they also served their own gods according to the customs of the nations from which they had been carried away.
With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them saying, Ye shall not fear other
gods, nor bow
yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:
For the LORD had made a covenant with the Israelites and commanded them, “Do not worship other gods or bow down to them; do not serve them or sacrifice to them.
And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for
evermore; and ye shall not fear other
gods.
And you must always be careful to observe the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments He wrote for you. Do not worship other gods.
And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not
forget; neither shall ye fear other
gods.
Do not
forget the covenant I have made with you. Do not worship other
gods,
But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
but worship the LORD your God, and He will deliver you from the hands of all your enemies.”
He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the
God of Israel. No king of Judah was like him, either before him or after him.
Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their
God, but
transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
This happened because they did not
listen to the voice of the LORD their
God, but
violated His covenant—all that Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded—and would neither
listen nor obey.
But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our
God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our
God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
Where are the
gods of
Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the
gods of
Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?
Where are the
gods of
Hamath and Arpad? Where are the
gods of
Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered his land from my hand? How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”
It may be the LORD thy
God will hear all the words of
Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living
God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy
God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that are left.
Perhaps the LORD your
God will hear all the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living
God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your
God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that still survives.”
Thus shall ye speak to
Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy
God in whom thou trustest
deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
“Give this message to
Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your
God, in whom you trust,
deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Have the
gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and
Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of
Eden which were in Thelasar?
Did the
gods of the nations destroyed by my fathers
rescue those nations—the
gods of Gozan,
Haran, and Rezeph, and of the people of
Eden in Telassar?
And
Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD
God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the
God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
And
Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “O LORD,
God of Israel, enthroned between the
cherubim, You alone are
God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of
Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living
God.
