And he called unto him two centurions,
saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and
horsemen threescore and ten, and
spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;
Then he called two of his centurions and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy
horsemen, and two hundred
spearmen to go to Caesarea in the third hour of the night.
And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent
straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to
say before thee what they had against him.
Farewell.
When I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also
instructed his accusers to present their case against him before you.
And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to
accuse him,
saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,
When Paul had been called in, Tertullus opened the
prosecution: “Because of you, we have enjoyed a lasting peace, and your
foresight has brought improvements to this nation.
And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.
The Jews
concurred, asserting that these charges were true.
Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
Otherwise, let these men state for themselves any crime they found in me when I stood before the
Sanhedrin,
And when they had been there many days,
Festus declared Paul’s cause unto the king,
saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by
Felix:
Since they were staying several days,
Festus laid out Paul’s case before the king: “There is a certain man whom
Felix left in prison.
And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and
saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to
kick against the pricks.
We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice
say to me in Hebrew, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you
persecute Me? It is hard for you to
kick against the goads.’
Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
But I have had God’s help to this day, and I stand here to
testify to small and great alike. I am
saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen:
And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.
On their way out, they said to one another, “This man has done nothing worthy of death or imprisonment.”
Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And look, God has granted you the lives of all who sail with you.’
And while the day was coming on, Paul
besought them all to take meat,
saying, This day is the
fourteenth day that ye have
tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.
Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
God
forbid:
yea, let God be true, but every man a
liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy
sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a
liar. As it is written: “So that You may be proved right when You speak and victorious when You judge.”
But if our unrighteousness
commend the righteousness of God, what shall we
say? Is God unrighteous who taketh
vengeance? (I speak as a man)
But if our unrighteousness highlights the righteousness of God, what shall we
say? That God is unjust to
inflict His wrath on us? I am speaking in human terms.
And not rather, (as we be
slanderously reported, and as some
affirm that we
say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose
damnation is just.
Why not
say, as some
slanderously claim that we
say, “Let us do evil that good may result”? Their
condemnation is deserved!
Now we know that what things
soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.
To declare, I
say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the
justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
He did this to
demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to
justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
What then shall we
say that Abraham, our
forefather, has discovered?
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
“Blessed are they whose lawless acts are
forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Cometh this blessedness then upon the
circumcision only, or upon the
uncircumcision also? for we
say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
Is this blessing only on the
circumcised, or also on the
uncircumcised? We have been
saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase?
What shall we
say then? Is the law sin? God
forbid.
Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known
lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not
covet.
What then shall we
say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of
coveting if the law had not said, “Do not
covet.”
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
What then shall we
say in
response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
I speak the truth in Christ; I am not lying, as confirmed by my conscience in the Holy Spirit.
What shall we
say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God
forbid.
What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Certainly not!
For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have
compassion on whom I will have
compassion.
For He
says to Moses: “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have
compassion on whom I have
compassion.”
For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might
shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”
Thou
wilt say then unto me, Why
doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
One of you will say to me, “Then why does God still find fault? For who can resist His will?”
Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed
say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, “Why did You make me like this?”
As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
As He
says in
Hosea: “I will call them ‘My People’ who are not My people, and I will call her ‘My Beloved’ who is not My beloved,”
What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
What then will we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise,
Say not in thine heart, Who shall
ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
But the righteousness that is by faith
says: “Do not
say in your heart, ‘Who will
ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)
But what saith it? The word is
nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we
preach;
But what does it
say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are
proclaiming:
It is just as the Scripture
says: “
Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
But not all of them
welcomed the good news. For Isaiah
says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”
But I
say, Have they not heard?
Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
But I ask, did they not hear? Indeed they did: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”
But I
say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will
provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a
foolish nation I will anger you.
I ask instead, did Israel not understand? First, Moses
says: “I will make you
jealous by those who are not a nation; I will make you
angry by a nation without understanding.”
But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
And Isaiah boldly says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me.”
But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a
disobedient and
gainsaying people.
But as for Israel he
says: “All day long I have held out My hands to a
disobedient and
obstinate people.”
I
say then, Hath God cast away his people? God
forbid. For I also am an
Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
I ask then, did God
reject His people? Certainly not! I am an
Israelite myself, a
descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
God hath not cast away his people which he
foreknew.
Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh
intercession to God against Israel,
saying,
God did not
reject His people, whom He
foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture
says about
Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
And David saith, Let their table be made a
snare, and a
trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
I
say then, Have they
stumbled that they should fall? God
forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to
provoke them to jealousy.
I ask then, did they
stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Certainly not! However, because of their
trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel
jealous.
Thou
wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
You will
say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be
grafted in.”
For I
say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think
soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
For by the grace given me I
say to every one of you: Do not think of
yourself more highly than you ought, but think of
yourself with
sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you.
Do not
avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “
Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,
says the Lord.”
For this, Thou shalt not commit
adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not
steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not
covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly
comprehended in this
saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.
For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every
knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall
confess to God.
It is written: “As surely as I live,
says the Lord, every
knee will bow before Me; every tongue will
confess to God.”
Now I
say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the
circumcision for the truth of God, to
confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the
circumcised on behalf of God’s truth, to
confirm the promises made to the patriarchs,
And again he saith,
Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.
Again, it
says: “
Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.”
And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of
Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.
And once more, Isaiah
says: “The Root of
Jesse will appear, One who will arise to rule over the Gentiles; in Him the Gentiles will put their hope.”
Now this I
say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of
Cephas; and I of Christ.
What I mean is this: Individuals among you are
saying, “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow
Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.”
Lest any should
say that I had
baptized in mine own name.
so no one can
say that you were
baptized into my name.
For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not
carnal?
For when one of you says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere men?
But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are
puffed up, but the power.
But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only what these
arrogant people are
saying, but what power they have.
I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
I
say this to your shame. Is there really no one among you wise enough to
arbitrate between his brothers?
But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.
I
say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they
abide even as I.
Now to the unmarried and widows I say this: It is good for them to remain unmarried, as I am.
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
To the rest I
say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not
divorce her.
I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be.
Because of the present
crisis, I think it is good for a man to remain as he is.
But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
What I am saying, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none;
And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a
snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.
I am
saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but in order to promote proper
decorum and undivided devotion to the Lord.
Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
Do I
say this from a human
perspective? Doesn’t the Law
say the same thing?
I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
I speak to reasonable people; judge for
yourselves what I
say.
What
say I then? that the
idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an
idol is anything, or that an
idol is anything?
But I
say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have
fellowship with devils.
No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.
But if any man
say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the
fulness thereof:
But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience—
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience?
the other one’s conscience, I mean, not your own. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience?
What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or
despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I
say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
Don’t you have your own homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you
despise the church of God and
humiliate those who have nothing? What can I
say to you? Shall I praise you for this? No, I will not!
After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had
supped,
saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as
oft as ye drink it, in
remembrance of me.
In the same way, after
supper He took the cup,
saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of Me.”
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus
accursed: and that no man can
say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Therefore I inform you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God
says, “Jesus be
cursed,” and no one can
say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you.” Nor can the head say to the feet, “I do not need you.”
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will
anyone know what you are
saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
Else when thou shalt
bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned
say Amen at thy giving of
thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou
sayest?
Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit, how can someone who is
uninstructed say “
Amen” to your
thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are
saying?
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
It is written in the Law: “By strange tongues and foreign lips I will speak to this people, but even then they will not
listen to Me,
says the Lord.”
If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not
say that ye are
mad?
So if the whole church comes together and
everyone speaks in tongues, and some who are
uninstructed or some unbelievers come in, will they not
say that you are out of your minds?
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a
psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto
edifying.
What then shall we
say, brothers? When you come together,
everyone has a
psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church.
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
Women are to be silent in the churches. They are not permitted to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.
Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
For “God has put everything under His feet.” Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him.
Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
Sober up as you ought, and stop
sinning; for some of you are ignorant of God. I
say this to your shame.
But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”
Now this I
say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God; neither
doth corruption
inherit incorruption.
Now I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable
inherit the imperishable.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this
mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the
saying that is written, Death is
swallowed up in victory.
When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the
mortal with immortality, then the
saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been
swallowed up in victory.”
When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be
yea yea, and
nay nay?
When I
planned this, did I do it
carelessly? Or do I make my plans by human standards, so as to
say “
Yes,
yes” when I really mean “No, no”?
We are
confident, I
say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
We are
confident, then, and would
prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
For He says: “In the time of favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is the time of favor; now is the day of salvation!
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
“Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.”
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord
Almighty.
And: “I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters,
says the Lord
Almighty.”
I speak not this to
condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.
I do not
say this to
condemn you. I have said before that you so occupy our hearts that we live and die together with you.
Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—to
say nothing of you—would be
ashamed of having been so
confident.
For his letters,
say they, are
weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
For some
say, “His letters are
weighty and forceful, but his physical presence is
unimpressive, and his speaking is of no account.”
I
say again, Let no man think me a
fool; if otherwise, yet as a
fool receive me, that I may
boast myself a little.
I
repeat: Let no one take me for a
fool. But if you do, then receive me as a
fool, so that I too may
boast a little.
For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will
say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I wanted to
boast, I would not be a
fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
As we said before, so
say I now again, If any man
preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be
accursed.
As we have said before, so now I
say again: If
anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a
curse!
