And if
the latter husband
hate her, and write her a bill of
divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if
the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;
and
the second man hates her, writes her a
certificate of
divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house, or if he dies,
Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is
defiled; for that is
abomination before
the LORD: and thou shalt not cause
the land to sin, which
the LORD thy God giveth
thee for an inheritance.
then the husband who
divorced her first may not remarry her after she has been
defiled, for that is an
abomination to
the LORD. You must not bring sin upon
the land that
the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall
cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
If a man is newly married, he must not be sent to war or be pressed into any duty. For one year he is free to stay at home and bring joy to the wife he has married.
Do not take a pair of millstones or even an upper
millstone as security for a debt, because that would be taking one’s
livelihood as security.
If a man be found
stealing any of his brethren of
the children of Israel, and maketh
merchandise of him, or selleth him;
then that
thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.
If a man is caught
kidnapping one of his
Israelite brothers, whether he treats him as a slave or sells him,
the kidnapper must die. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
Take
heed in
the plague of
leprosy, that thou observe
diligently, and do according to all that
the priests
the Levites shall teach you: as I commanded
them, so ye shall observe to do.
Remember what
the LORD thy God did unto
Miriam by
the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt.
Remember what
the LORD your God did to
Miriam on
the journey after you came out of Egypt.
Thou shalt stand abroad, and
the man to whom thou
dost lend shall bring out
the pledge abroad unto
thee.
You are to stand outside while
the man to whom you are
lending brings
the security out to you.
And if
the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his
pledge:
If he is a poor man, you must not go to sleep with the security in your possession;
In any case thou shalt deliver him
the pledge again when
the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own
raiment, and
bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto
thee before
the LORD thy God.
be sure to return it to him by
sunset, so that he may sleep in his own
cloak and
bless you, and this will be credited to you as righteousness before
the LORD your God.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall
the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against
thee unto
the LORD, and it be sin unto
thee.
You are to pay his wages each day before
sunset, because he is poor and depends on
them. Otherwise he may cry out to
the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.
Thou shalt not
pervert the judgment of
the stranger, nor of
the fatherless; nor take a widow’s
raiment to
pledge:
Do not deny justice to
the foreigner or
the fatherless, and do not take a widow’s
cloak as security.
But thou shalt remember that thou
wast a
bondman in Egypt, and
the LORD thy God redeemed
thee thence:
therefore I command
thee to do this thing.
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from that place. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.
When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast
forgot a
sheaf in
the field, thou shalt not go again to
fetch it: it shall be for
the stranger, for
the fatherless, and for
the widow: that
the LORD thy God may
bless thee in all
the work of thine hands.
If you are harvesting in your field and
forget a
sheaf there, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for
the foreigner,
the fatherless, and
the widow, so that
the LORD your God may
bless you in all
the work of your hands.
When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
When you beat the olives from your trees, you must not go over the branches again. What remains will be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
When thou gatherest
the grapes of thy
vineyard, thou shalt not
glean it afterward: it shall be for
the stranger, for
the fatherless, and for
the widow.
When you gather
the grapes of your
vineyard, you must not go over
the vines again. What remains will be for
the foreigner,
the fatherless, and
the widow.
And thou shalt remember that thou
wast a
bondman in
the land of Egypt:
therefore I command
thee to do this thing.
Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.
If
there be a controversy between men, and
they come unto judgment, that
the judges may judge
them;
then they shall
justify the righteous, and
condemn the wicked.
If
there is a dispute between men,
they are to go to court to be judged, so that
the innocent may be
acquitted and
the guilty condemned.
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
If
the guilty man deserves to be beaten,
the judge shall have him lie down and be
flogged in his presence with
the number of lashes his crime warrants.
Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above
these with many stripes,
then thy brother should seem
vile unto
thee.
He may receive no more than forty lashes, lest your brother be beaten any more than that and be
degraded in your sight.
Thou shalt not
muzzle the ox when he treadeth out
the corn.
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
When brothers dwell together and one of
them dies without a son,
the widow must not marry outside
the family. Her husband’s brother is to take her as his wife and
fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for her.
And it shall be, that
the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in
the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
The first son she bears will carry on
the name of
the dead brother, so that his name will not be
blotted out from Israel.
And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.
But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He is not willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.”
Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her;
Then the elders of his city shall
summon him and speak with him. If he persists and says, “I do not want to marry her,”
Then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in
the presence of
the elders, and loose his
shoe from off his foot, and
spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house.
his brother’s widow shall go up to him in
the presence of
the elders, remove his
sandal,
spit in his face, and declare, “This is what is done to
the man who will not maintain his brother’s line.”
And his name shall be called in Israel,
The house of him that hath his
shoe loosed.
And his family name in Israel will be called “
The House of
the Unsandaled.”
When men
strive together one with another, and
the wife of
the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of
the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by
the secrets:
If two men are fighting, and
the wife of one steps in to
rescue her husband from
the one striking him, and she reaches out her hand and grabs his
genitals,
Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not
pity her.
you are to cut off her hand. You must show her no
pity.
But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be
lengthened in
the land which
the LORD thy God giveth
thee.
You must maintain accurate and
honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in
the land that
the LORD your God is giving you.
For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an
abomination unto
the LORD thy God.
Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;
Remember what
the Amalekites did to you along your way from Egypt,
How he met
thee by
the way, and
smote the hindmost of
thee, even all that were feeble behind
thee, when thou
wast faint and
weary; and he feared not God.
how
they met you on your journey when you were
tired and
weary, and
they attacked all your stragglers;
they had no fear of God.
Therefore it shall be, when
the LORD thy God hath given
thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in
the land which
the LORD thy God giveth
thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt
blot out
the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not
forget it.
When
the LORD your God gives you rest from
the enemies around you in
the land that He is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you are to
blot out
the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not
forget!
And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and possessest it, and dwellest therein;
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and settle in it,
That thou shalt take of
the first of all
the fruit of
the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that
the LORD thy God giveth
thee, and shalt put it in a
basket, and shalt go unto
the place which
the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name
there.
you are to take some of
the firstfruits of all your produce from
the soil of
the land that
the LORD your God is giving you and put
them in a
basket.
Then go to
the place
the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name,
And thou shalt go unto
the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I
profess this day unto
the LORD thy God, that I am come unto
the country which
the LORD
sware unto our fathers for to give us.
to
the priest who is serving at that time, and say to him, “I declare
today to
the LORD your God that I have entered
the land that
the LORD
swore to our fathers to give us.”
And
the priest shall take
the basket out of thine hand, and set it down before
the altar of
the LORD thy God.
Then the priest shall take
the basket from your hands and place it before
the altar of
the LORD your God,
And thou shalt speak and say before
the LORD thy God, A
Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and
sojourned there with a few, and became
there a nation, great, mighty, and
populous:
and you are to declare before
the LORD your God, “My father was a wandering
Aramean, and he went down to Egypt few in number and lived
there and became a great nation, mighty and numerous.
But
the Egyptians mistreated us and
afflicted us, putting us to hard labor.
And when we
cried unto
the LORD God of our fathers,
the LORD heard our voice, and looked on our
affliction, and our labour, and our oppression:
So we called out to
the LORD,
the God of our fathers; and
the LORD heard our voice and saw our
affliction,
toil, and oppression.
And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders:
Then the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, signs, and wonders.
And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O LORD, hast given me. And thou shalt set it before the LORD thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God:
And now, behold, I have brought
the firstfruits of
the land that You, O LORD, have given me.”
Then you are to place
the basket before
the LORD your God and bow down before Him.
And thou shalt
rejoice in every good thing which
the LORD thy God hath given unto
thee, and unto thine house, thou, and
the Levite, and
the stranger that is among you.
So you shall
rejoice—you,
the Levite, and
the foreigner dwelling among you—in all
the good things
the LORD your God has given to you and your household.
When thou hast made an end of
tithing all
the tithes of thine increase
the third year, which is
the year of
tithing, and hast given it unto
the Levite,
the stranger,
the fatherless, and
the widow, that
they may eat within thy gates, and be filled;
When you have finished laying aside a tenth of all your produce in
the third year,
the year of
the tithe, you are to give it to
the Levite,
the foreigner,
the fatherless, and
the widow, that
they may eat and be filled within your gates.
Then thou shalt say before
the LORD thy God, I have brought away
the hallowed things out of mine house, and also have given
them unto
the Levite, and unto
the stranger, to
the fatherless, and to
the widow, according to all thy commandments which thou hast commanded me: I have not
transgressed thy commandments, neither have I forgotten
them:
Then you shall declare in
the presence of
the LORD your God, “I have removed from my house
the sacred portion and have given it to
the Levite,
the foreigner,
the fatherless, and
the widow, according to all
the commandments You have given me. I have not
transgressed or forgotten Your commandments.
I have not eaten
thereof in my
mourning, neither have I taken away ought
thereof for any unclean use, nor given ought
thereof for
the dead: but I have
hearkened to
the voice of
the LORD my God, and have done according to all that thou hast commanded me.
I have not eaten any of
the sacred portion while in
mourning, or removed any of it while unclean, or offered any of it for
the dead. I have obeyed
the LORD my God; I have done everything You commanded me.
Look down from thy holy
habitation, from heaven, and
bless thy people Israel, and
the land which thou hast given us, as thou swarest unto our fathers, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
Look down from Your holy
habitation, from heaven, and
bless Your people Israel and
the land You have given us as You
swore to our fathers—a land flowing with milk and honey.”
This day the LORD thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. You must be careful to follow them with all your heart and with all your soul.
Thou hast
avouched the LORD this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to
hearken unto his voice:
Today you have proclaimed that
the LORD is your God and that you will walk in His ways, keep His statutes and commandments and ordinances, and
listen to His voice.
And
the LORD hath
avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised
thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments;
And
today the LORD has proclaimed that you are His people and
treasured possession as He promised, that you are to keep all His commandments,
And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken.
that He will set you high in praise and name and honor above all the nations He has made, and that you will be a holy people to the LORD your God, as He has promised.
And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandments which I command you this day.
Then Moses and
the elders of Israel commanded
the people: “Keep all
the commandments I am giving you
today.
And it shall be on
the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto
the land which
the LORD thy God giveth
thee, that thou shalt set
thee up great stones, and
plaister them with
plaister:
And on
the day you cross
the Jordan into
the land that
the LORD your God is giving you, set up large stones and coat
them with
plaster.
And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over, that thou mayest go in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, a land that floweth with milk and honey; as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee.
Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up
these stones, which I command you this day, in mount
Ebal, and thou shalt
plaister them with
plaister.
And when you have crossed
the Jordan, you are to set up
these stones on Mount
Ebal, as I am commanding you
today, and you are to coat
them with
plaster.
And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them.
Thou shalt build
the altar of
the LORD thy God of whole stones: and thou shalt offer burnt offerings
thereon unto
the LORD thy God:
You shall build the altar of the LORD your God with uncut stones and offer upon it burnt offerings to the LORD your God.
And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and shalt eat
there, and
rejoice before
the LORD thy God.
There you are to sacrifice your peace offerings, eating
them and
rejoicing in
the presence of
the LORD your God.
And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.
And you shall write distinctly upon these stones all the words of this law.”
And Moses and
the priests
the Levites spake unto all Israel, saying, Take
heed, and
hearken, O Israel; this day thou art become
the people of
the LORD thy God.
Then Moses and
the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: “Be silent, O Israel, and
listen! This day you have become
the people of
the LORD your God.
Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the LORD thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.
You shall
therefore obey
the voice of
the LORD your God and follow His commandments and statutes I am giving you
today.”
And Moses charged the people the same day, saying,
On that day Moses commanded the people:
These shall stand upon mount
Gerizim to
bless the people, when ye are come over Jordan;
Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and
Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin:
“When you have crossed
the Jordan,
these tribes shall stand on Mount
Gerizim to
bless the people:
Simeon, Levi, Judah,
Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
And the Levites shall speak, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice,
Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
‘
Cursed is he who moves his
neighbor’s boundary stone.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that maketh
the blind to
wander out of
the way. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who lets a blind man
wander in
the road.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that perverteth
the judgment of
the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who withholds justice from
the foreigner,
the fatherless, or
the widow.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that lieth with his father’s wife; because he uncovereth his father’s
skirt. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he has
violated his father’s marriage bed.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that lieth with any manner of beast. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who lies with any animal.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that lieth with his sister,
the daughter of his father, or
the daughter of his mother. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who sleeps with his sister,
the daughter of his father or
the daughter of his mother.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that lieth with his mother in law. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who sleeps with his mother-in-law.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour secretly. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who strikes down his
neighbor in secret.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that taketh reward to
slay an innocent person. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who accepts a
bribe to kill an innocent person.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Cursed be he that confirmeth not all
the words of this law to do
them. And all
the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who does not put
the words of this law into practice.’ And let all
the people say, ‘
Amen!’
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt
hearken diligently unto
the voice of
the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command
thee this day, that
the LORD thy God will set
thee on high above all nations of
the earth:
“Now if you faithfully obey
the voice of
the LORD your God and are careful to follow all His commandments I am giving you
today,
the LORD your God will set you high above all
the nations of
the earth.
And all
these blessings shall come on
thee, and overtake
thee, if thou shalt
hearken unto
the voice of
the LORD thy God.
And all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you, if you will obey the voice of the LORD your God:
Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
Blessed shall be
the fruit of thy body, and
the fruit of thy ground, and
the fruit of thy cattle,
the increase of thy
kine, and
the flocks of thy sheep.
The fruit of your
womb will be blessed, as well as
the produce of your land and
the offspring of your
livestock—
the calves of your herds and
the lambs of your flocks.
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against
thee to be
smitten before thy face:
they shall come out against
thee one way, and
flee before
thee seven ways.
The LORD will cause
the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you.
They will march out against you in one direction but
flee from you in seven.
The LORD shall command
the blessing upon
thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall
bless thee in
the land which
the LORD thy God giveth
thee.
The LORD will decree a blessing on your barns and on everything to which you put your hand;
the LORD your God will
bless you in
the land He is giving you.
The LORD shall establish
thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath
sworn unto
thee, if thou shalt keep
the commandments of
the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.
The LORD will establish you as His holy people, just as He has
sworn to you, if you keep
the commandments of
the LORD your God and walk in His ways.
And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.
Then all
the peoples of
the earth will see that you are called by
the name of
the LORD, and
they will stand in
awe of you.
And
the LORD shall make
thee plenteous in goods, in
the fruit of thy body, and in
the fruit of thy cattle, and in
the fruit of thy ground, in
the land which
the LORD
sware unto thy fathers to give
thee.
The LORD will make you
prosper abundantly—in
the fruit of your
womb,
the offspring of your
livestock, and
the produce of your land—in
the land that
the LORD
swore to your fathers to give you.
The LORD shall open unto
thee his good
treasure,
the heaven to give
the rain unto thy land in his season, and to
bless all
the work of thine hand: and thou shalt
lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not
borrow.
The LORD will open
the heavens, His abundant
storehouse, to send rain on your land in season and to
bless all
the work of your hands. You will
lend to many nations, but
borrow from none.
And
the LORD shall make
thee the head, and not
the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou
hearken unto
the commandments of
the LORD thy God, which I command
thee this day, to observe and to do
them:
The LORD will make you
the head and not
the tail; you will only move upward and never
downward, if you hear and carefully follow
the commandments of
the LORD your God, which I am giving you
today.
And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
Do not turn aside to
the right or to
the left from any of
the words I command you
today, and do not go after other gods to serve
them.
But it shall come to pass, if thou
wilt not
hearken unto
the voice of
the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command
thee this day; that all
these curses shall come upon
thee, and overtake
thee:
If, however, you do not obey
the LORD your God by carefully following all His commandments and statutes I am giving you
today, all
these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
Cursed shalt thou be in
the city, and
cursed shalt thou be in
the field.
Cursed shall be
the fruit of thy body, and
the fruit of thy land,
the increase of thy
kine, and
the flocks of thy sheep.
The fruit of your
womb will be
cursed, as well as
the produce of your land,
the calves of your herds, and
the lambs of your flocks.
The LORD shall send upon
thee cursing,
vexation, and
rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of
the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast
forsaken me.
The LORD will send curses upon you, confusion and reproof in all to which you put your hand, until you are destroyed and quickly perish because of
the wickedness you have committed in
forsaking Him.
The LORD shall make
the pestilence cleave unto
thee, until he have consumed
thee from off
the land,
whither thou goest to possess it.
The LORD will make
the plague
cling to you until He has
exterminated you from
the land that you are entering to possess.
The LORD shall
smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with
the sword, and with blasting, and with
mildew; and
they shall pursue
thee until thou perish.
The LORD will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with
scorching heat and
drought, and with
blight and
mildew;
these will pursue you until you perish.
And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
The sky over your head will be bronze, and the earth beneath you iron.
The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
The LORD will turn the rain of your land into dust and powder; it will descend on you from the sky until you are destroyed.
The LORD shall cause
thee to be
smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against
them, and
flee seven ways before
them: and shalt be removed into all
the kingdoms of
the earth.
The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march out against
them in one direction but
flee from
them in seven. You will be an object of
