But
the fields of
the city, and
the villages
thereof, gave
they to
Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
But
they had given
the fields and villages around
the city to
Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
Thus
they gave to
the children of Aaron
the priest
Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for
the slayer; and
Libnah with her suburbs,
So to
the descendants of Aaron
the priest
they gave
these cities, together with
their pasturelands:
Hebron, a city of refuge for
the manslayer,
Libnah,
And
Ain with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs, and Beth-shemesh with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.
Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine cities from
these two tribes, together with
their pasturelands.
And out of
the tribe of Benjamin,
Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs,
And from
the tribe of Benjamin
they gave
them Gibeon, Geba,
Anathoth with her suburbs, and
Almon with her suburbs; four cities.
Anathoth, and
Almon—four cities, together with
their pasturelands.
All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs.
In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
And
the families of
the children of
Kohath,
the Levites which remained of
the children of
Kohath, even
they had
the cities of
their lot out of
the tribe of Ephraim.
The remaining Kohathite clans of
the Levites were
allotted these cities:
For
they gave
them Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for
the slayer; and
Gezer with her suburbs,
From
the tribe of Ephraim
they were given
Shechem in
the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for
the manslayer),
Gezer,
And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Beth-horon with her suburbs; four cities.
Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of
the tribe of
Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with her suburbs,
From
the tribe of
Dan they were given Elteke, Gibbethon,
And out of
the half tribe of
Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and
Gath-
rimmon with her suburbs; two cities.
And from
the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Taanach and
Gath-
rimmon—two cities, together with
their pasturelands.
All
the cities were ten with
their suburbs for
the families of
the children of
Kohath that remained.
In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
And unto
the children of Gershon, of
the families of
the Levites, out of
the other half tribe of
Manasseh they gave Golan in
Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for
the slayer; and Beesh-terah with her suburbs; two cities.
This is what
the Levite clans of
the Gershonites were given: From
the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Golan in
Bashan, a city of refuge for
the manslayer, and Beeshterah—two cities, together with
their pasturelands.
And out of
the tribe of
Issachar,
Kishon with her suburbs, Dabareh with her suburbs,
From
the tribe of
Issachar they were given Kishion, Daberath,
Jarmuth with her suburbs, En-gannim with her suburbs; four cities.
Jarmuth, and En-gannim—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs,
From the tribe of Asher they were given Mishal, Abdon,
Helkath with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs; four cities.
Helkath, and Rehob—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of
the tribe of
Naphtali, Kedesh in
Galilee with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for
the slayer; and Hammoth-
dor with her suburbs, and Kartan with her suburbs; three cities.
And from
the tribe of
Naphtali they were given Kedesh in
Galilee (a city of refuge for
the manslayer), Hammoth-
dor, and Kartan—three cities, together with
their pasturelands.
All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs.
In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the Gershonite clans.
And unto
the families of
the children of Merari,
the rest of
the Levites, out of
the tribe of
Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs,
This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given:
Dimnah with her suburbs, Nahalal with her suburbs; four cities.
From
the tribe of
Zebulun they were given Jokneam, Kartah, Dimnah, and Nahalal—four cities, together with
their pasturelands.
And out of
the tribe of
Reuben,
Bezer with her suburbs, and Jahazah with her suburbs,
Kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs; four cities.
Kedemoth, and Mephaath—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
Heshbon with her suburbs, Jazer with her suburbs; four cities in all.
Heshbon, and Jazer—four cities in all, together with
their pasturelands.
So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.
In all, twelve cities were
allotted to
the clans of Merari,
the remaining
Levite clans.
All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.
For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.
These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities.
Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.
And
the LORD gave unto Israel all
the land which he
sware to give unto
their fathers; and
they possessed it, and dwelt
therein.
Thus
the LORD gave Israel all
the land He had
sworn to give
their fathers, and
they took possession of it and settled in it.
And
the LORD gave
them rest round about, according to all that he
sware unto
their fathers: and
there stood not a man of all
their enemies before
them;
the LORD delivered all
their enemies into
their hand.
And
the LORD gave
them rest on every side, just as He had
sworn to
their fathers. None of
their enemies could stand against
them, for
the LORD delivered all
their enemies into
their hand.
There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.
Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.
Then Joshua called
the Reubenites, and
the Gadites, and
the half tribe of
Manasseh,
Then Joshua summoned
the Reubenites,
the Gadites, and
the half-tribe of
Manasseh And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:
and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.
All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.
And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.
And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.
But take
diligent heed to do
the commandment and
the law, which Moses
the servant of
the LORD charged you, to love
the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.
So Joshua blessed them and sent them on their way, and they went to their homes.
Now to
the one half of
the tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given possession in
Bashan: but unto
the other half
thereof gave Joshua among
their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent
them away also unto
their tents,
then he blessed
them,
(To
the half-tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given land in
Bashan, and to
the other half Joshua gave land on
the west side of
the Jordan among
their brothers.) When Joshua sent
them to
their homes he blessed
them,
And he spake unto
them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much
raiment: divide
the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth, with immense herds of
livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very many clothes. Divide with your brothers
the spoil of your enemies.”
And
the children of
Reuben and
the children of
Gad and
the half tribe of
Manasseh returned, and departed from
the children of Israel out of
Shiloh, which is in
the land of
Canaan, to go unto
the country of
Gilead, to
the land of
their possession,
whereof they were possessed, according to
the word of
the LORD by
the hand of Moses.
So
the Reubenites,
the Gadites, and
the half-tribe of
Manasseh left
the Israelites at
Shiloh in
the land of
Canaan to return to
their own land of
Gilead, which
they had acquired according to
the command of
the LORD through Moses.
And when
they came unto
the borders of Jordan, that are in
the land of
Canaan,
the children of
Reuben and
the children of
Gad and
the half tribe of
Manasseh built
there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.
And when
they came to Geliloth near
the Jordan in
the land of
Canaan,
the Reubenites,
the Gadites, and
the half-tribe of
Manasseh built an imposing altar
there by
the Jordan.
And
the children of Israel heard say, Behold,
the children of
Reuben and
the children of
Gad and
the half tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar over against
the land of
Canaan, in
the borders of Jordan, at
the passage of
the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites received
the report: “Behold,
the Reubenites,
the Gadites, and
the half-tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar on
the border of
the land of
Canaan, at Geliloth near
the Jordan on
the Israelite side.”
And when
the children of Israel heard of it,
the whole congregation of
the children of Israel gathered
themselves together at
Shiloh, to go up to war against
them.
And when
they heard this,
the whole congregation of Israel assembled at
Shiloh to go to war against
them.
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
And
they came unto
the children of
Reuben, and to
the children of
Gad, and to
the half tribe of
Manasseh, unto
the land of
Gilead, and
they spake with
them, saying,
They went to
the Reubenites,
the Gadites, and
the half-tribe of
Manasseh in
the land of
Gilead and said to
them,
Thus saith
the whole congregation of
the LORD, What
trespass is this that ye have committed against
the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following
the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might
rebel this day against
the LORD?
“This is what
the whole congregation of
the LORD says: ‘What is this breach of faith you have committed
today against
the God of Israel by turning away from
the LORD and building for
yourselves an altar, that you might
rebel against
the LORD this day?
Is
the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not
cleansed until this day, although
there was a plague in
the congregation of
the LORD,
Was not
the sin of Peor enough for us, from which we have not
cleansed ourselves to this day? It even brought a plague upon
the congregation of
the LORD.
But that ye must turn away this day from following
the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye
rebel to day against
the LORD, that to
morrow he will be
wroth with
the whole congregation of Israel.
And now, would you turn away from
the LORD? If you
rebel today against
the LORD,
tomorrow He will be
angry with
the whole congregation of Israel.
Notwithstanding, if
the land of your possession be unclean,
then pass ye over unto
the land of
the possession of
the LORD, wherein
the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but
rebel not against
the LORD, nor
rebel against us, in building you an altar beside
the altar of
the LORD our God.
If indeed
the land of your inheritance is unclean,
then cross over to
the land of
the LORD’s possession, where
the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take possession of it among us. But do not
rebel against
the LORD or against us by building for
yourselves an altar other than
the altar of
the LORD our God.
Did not
Achan the son of Zerah commit a
trespass in
the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all
the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
Was not
Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was set apart for destruction, bringing wrath upon
the whole congregation of Israel? Yet it was not only
Achan who perished because of his sin!’”
Then the children of
Reuben and
the children of
Gad and
the half tribe of
Manasseh answered, and said unto
the heads of
the thousands of Israel,
Then the Reubenites,
the Gadites, and
the half-tribe of
Manasseh answered
the leaders of
the clans of Israel:
The LORD God of gods,
the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in
transgression against
the LORD, (save us not this day,)
“
The LORD,
the Mighty One, is God!
The LORD,
the Mighty One, is God! He knows, and may Israel also know. If this was in rebellion or breach of faith against
the LORD, do not
spare us
today.
That we have built us an altar to turn from following
the LORD, or if to offer
thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings
thereon, let
the LORD himself require it;
If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice
fellowship offerings on it, may
the LORD Himself hold us accountable.
And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?
But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
For
the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of
Reuben and children of
Gad; ye have no part in
the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing
the LORD.
For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no share in the LORD!’ So your descendants could cause ours to stop fearing the LORD.
Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:
That is why we said, ‘Let us take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Therefore we said, ‘If
they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at
the replica of
the altar of
the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’
God
forbid that we should
rebel against
the LORD, and turn this day from following
the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside
the altar of
the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against
the LORD and turn away from Him
today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than
the altar of
the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle.”
And when
Phinehas the priest, and
the princes of
the congregation and heads of
the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard
the words that
the children of
Reuben and
the children of
Gad and
the children of
Manasseh spake, it pleased
them.
When
Phinehas the priest and
the chiefs of
the congregation—
the heads of Israel’s clans who were with him—heard what
the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh had to say,
they were satisfied.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest said unto
the children of
Reuben, and to
the children of
Gad, and to
the children of
Manasseh, This day we perceive that
the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this
trespass against
the LORD: now ye have delivered
the children of Israel out of
the hand of
the LORD.
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest said to
the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh, “
Today we know that
the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him. Consequently, you have delivered
the Israelites from
the hand of
the LORD.”
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, and
the princes, returned from
the children of
Reuben, and from
the children of
Gad, out of
the land of
Gilead, unto
the land of
Canaan, to
the children of Israel, and brought
them word again.
Then Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, together with
the other leaders, returned to
the Israelites in
the land of
Canaan and brought back a report regarding
the Reubenites and Gadites in
the land of
Gilead.
And
the thing pleased
the children of Israel; and
the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against
them in battle, to destroy
the land wherein
the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
And
the children of
Reuben and
the children of
Gad called
the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that
the LORD is God.
So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
And it came to pass a long time after that
the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all
their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and
stricken in age.
A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old and well along in years,
And Joshua called for all Israel, and for
their elders, and for
their heads, and for
their judges, and for
their officers, and said unto
them, I am old and
stricken in age:
he summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. “I am old and well along in years,” he said,
And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.
“and you have seen everything that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, because it was the LORD your God who fought for you.
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
See, I have
allotted as an inheritance to your tribes
these remaining nations, including all
the nations I have already cut off, from
the Jordan westward to
the Great Sea.
And
the LORD your God, he shall
expel them from before you, and drive
them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess
their land, as
the LORD your God hath promised unto you.
The LORD your God will
push them out of your way and drive
them out before you, so that you can take possession of
their land, as
the LORD your God promised you.
Be ye
therefore very
courageous to keep and to do all that is written in
the book of
the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside
therefrom to
the right hand or to
the left;
Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left.
That ye come not among
these nations,
these that remain among you; neither make mention of
the names of
their gods, nor cause to
swear by
them, neither serve
them, nor bow
yourselves unto
them:
So you are not to associate with
these nations that remain among you. You must not call on
the names of
their gods or
swear by
them, and you must not serve
them or bow down to
them.
But
cleave unto
the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.
Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and to this day no one can stand against you.
One man of you shall
chase a thousand: for
the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
One of you can put a thousand to flight, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as He promised.
Take good
heed therefore unto
yourselves, that ye love
the LORD your God.
Therefore watch
yourselves carefully, that you love
the LORD your God.
Else if ye do in any wise go back, and
cleave unto
the remnant of
these nations, even
these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with
them, and go in unto
them, and
they to you:
For if you turn away and
cling to
the rest of
these nations that remain among you, and if you
intermarry and associate with
them,
Know for a certainty that
the LORD your God will no more drive out any of
these nations from before you; but
they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which
the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that
the LORD your God will no longer drive out
these nations before you. Instead,
they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that
the LORD your God has given you.
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Now behold,
today I am going
the way of all
the earth, and you know with all your heart and soul that not one of
the good promises
the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing
the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise
the LORD will bring upon you
the calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
When ye have
transgressed the covenant of
the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed
yourselves to
them;
then shall
the anger of
the LORD be
kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off
the good land which he hath given unto you.
If you
transgress the covenant of
the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to
them,
then the anger of
the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
And Joshua gathered all
the tribes of Israel to
Shechem, and called for
the elders of Israel, and for
their heads, and for
their judges, and for
their officers; and
they presented
themselves before God.
Then Joshua assembled all
the tribes of Israel at
Shechem. He summoned
the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel, and
they presented
themselves before God.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
And Joshua said to all
the people, “This is what
the LORD,
the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah
the father of Abraham and
Nahor, lived beyond
the Euphrates and worshiped other gods.
And I took your father Abraham from
the other side of
the flood, and led him throughout all
the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham from beyond
the Euphrates and led him through all
the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I
afflicted the Egyptians by what I did
there, and afterward I brought you out.
And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto
the sea; and
the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with
chariots and
horsemen unto
the Red sea.
When I brought your fathers out of Egypt and you reached
the Red Sea,
the Egyptians pursued
them with
chariots and
horsemen as far as
the Red Sea.
And when
they cried unto
the LORD, he put darkness between you and
the Egyptians, and brought
the sea upon
them, and covered
them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in
the wilderness a long season.
So your fathers
cried out to
the LORD, and He put darkness between you and
the Egyptians, over whom He brought
the sea and
engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to
the Egyptians.
Then you lived in
the wilderness for a long time.
And I brought you into
the land of
the Amorites, which dwelt on
the other side Jordan; and
they fought with you: and I gave
them into your hand, that ye might possess
their land; and I destroyed
them from before you.
Later, I brought you to
the land of
the Amorites who lived beyond
the Jordan.
They fought against you, but I delivered
them into your hand, that you should possess
their land when I destroyed
them before you.
Then Balak
the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and
warred against Israel, and sent and called
Balaam the son of Beor to
curse you:
Then Balak son of Zippor,
the king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent for
Balaam son of Beor to
curse you,
But I would not
hearken unto
Balaam;
therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
but I would not
listen to
Balaam. So he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you from his hand.
And I sent
the hornet before you, which
drave them out from before you, even
the two kings of
the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
I sent
the hornet ahead of you, and it drove out
the two Amorite kings before you, but not by your own sword or bow.
And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
So I gave you a land on which you did not
toil and cities that you did not build, and now you live in
them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’
Now
therefore fear
the LORD, and serve him in
sincerity and in truth: and put away
the gods which your fathers served on
the other side of
the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye
the LORD.
Now,
therefore, fear
the LORD and serve Him in
sincerity and truth; cast aside
the gods your fathers served beyond
the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve
the LORD.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve
the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether
the gods which your fathers served that were on
the other side of
the flood, or
the gods of
the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve
the LORD.
But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve
the LORD,
then choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether
the gods your fathers served beyond
the Euphrates, or
the gods of
the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve
the LORD!”
And
the people answered and said, God
forbid that we should
forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
The people replied, “Far be it from us to
forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
For
the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of
the land of Egypt, from
the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all
the way wherein we went, and among all
the people through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And
the LORD
drave out from before us all
the people, even
the Amorites which dwelt in
the land:
therefore will we also serve
the LORD; for he is our God.
And
the LORD drove out before us all
the nations, including
the Amorites who lived in
the land. We too will serve
the LORD, because He is our God!”
And Joshua said unto
the people, Ye cannot serve
the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a
jealous God; he will not
forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
But Joshua said to
the people, “You are not able to serve
the LORD, for He is a holy God; He is a
jealous God; He will not
forgive your rebellion or your sins.
