Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and
quicken thou me in thy way.
Turn my eyes away from worthless things; revive me with Your word.
They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.
Your ordinances stand to this day, for all things are servants to You.
Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all
things to be right; and I
hate every false way.
Therefore I
admire all Your precepts and
hate every false way.
Then was our mouth filled with
laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great
things for them.
Then our mouths were filled with
laughter, our tongues with shouts of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great
things for them.”
The LORD hath done great
things for us;
whereof we are
glad.
The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.
LORD, my heart is not
haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in
things too high for me.
My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not
haughty. I do not
aspire to great
things or matters too lofty for me.
Incline not my heart to any evil
thing, to
practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their
dainties.
Do not let my heart be drawn to any evil
thing or take part in works of wickedness with men who do iniquity; let me not feast on their
delicacies.
Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.
You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
Beasts, and all cattle;
creeping things, and flying fowl:
wild animals and all cattle,
crawling creatures and flying birds,
Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!
Hallelujah!
To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh
froward things;
to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks
perversity,
She is more precious than
rubies: and all the
things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
She is more precious than
rubies; nothing you desire compares with her.
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Wisdom is supreme; so acquire wisdom. And whatever you may acquire, gain understanding.
There are six
things that the LORD hates, seven that are
detestable to Him:
Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
Listen, for I speak of noble
things, and the opening of my lips will
reveal right.
For wisdom is better than
rubies; and all the
things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
For wisdom is more precious than
rubies, and nothing you desire compares with her.
A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the
recompense of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.
By fruitful speech a man is filled with good things, and the work of his hands returns to him.
A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the desire of the faithless is violence.
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked blurts out evil.
The LORD hath made all
things for himself:
yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
The LORD has made everything for His purpose— even the wicked for the day of
disaster.
He shutteth his eyes to
devise froward things: moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass.
He who winks his eye devises
perversity; he who purses his lips is bent on evil.
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good
thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.
For it is a pleasant
thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall
withal be fitted in thy lips.
for it is pleasing when you keep them within you and they are constantly on your lips.
Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,
Have I not written for you thirty sayings about counsel and knowledge,
My inmost being will
rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter
perverse things.
Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will utter perversities.
These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
These also are sayings of the wise: To show
partiality in judgment is not good.
It is the glory of God to
conceal a
thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
It is the glory of God to
conceal a matter and the glory of kings to search it out.
The great God that formed all
things both rewardeth the
fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
The full soul loatheth an
honeycomb; but to the
hungry soul every bitter
thing is sweet.
The soul that is full loathes honey, but to a
hungry soul, any bitter
thing is sweet.
Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.
Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD
comprehend fully.
Whoso causeth the righteous to go
astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good
things in possession.
He who leads the upright along the path of evil will fall into his own pit, but the
blameless will
inherit what is good.
Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:
Two things I ask of You— do not refuse me before I die:
The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three
things that are never satisfied,
yea, four
things say not, It is enough:
The
leech has two daughters: Give and Give. There are three
things that are never satisfied, four that never say, ‘Enough!’:
There be three
things which are too wonderful for me,
yea, four which I know not:
There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:
For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:
There be three
things which go well,
yea, four are comely in going:
There are three
things that are stately in their
stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:
Many daughters have done
virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
“Many daughters have done noble
things, but you
surpass them all!”
All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
All
things are
wearisome, more than one can describe; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear content with hearing.
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there any
thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
There is no
remembrance of former
things; neither shall there be any
remembrance of
things that are to come with those that shall come after.
There is no
remembrance of those who came before, and those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow after.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all
things that are done under heaven: this
sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised
therewith.
And I set my mind to seek and
explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
I have seen all the
things that are done under the sun, and have found them all to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind.
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set
eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot
fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.
I know that,
whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any
thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
I know that everything God does endures
forever; nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God does it so that they should fear Him.
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one
thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other;
yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
For the fates of both men and beasts are the same: As one dies, so dies the other—they all have the same breath. Man has no advantage over the animals, since everything is
futile.
Be not
rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be
hasty to utter any
thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
Do not be quick to speak, and do not be
hasty in your heart to utter a word before God. After all, God is in heaven and you are on earth. So let your words be few.
When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
When good
things increase, so do those who
consume them; what then is the profit to the owner, except to behold them with his eyes?
Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
The child, though neither seeing the sun nor knowing anything, has more rest than that man,
Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
For the more words, the more
futility—and how does that profit
anyone?
Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
The end of a matter is better than the beginning, and a patient spirit is better than a proud one.
All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
In my
futile life I have seen both of these: A righteous man perishing in his righteousness, and a wicked man living long in his wickedness.
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of
things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of
foolishness and madness:
I directed my mind to understand, to
explore, to search out wisdom and explanations, and to understand the
stupidity of wickedness and the folly of madness.
Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
“Behold,” says the Teacher, “I have discovered this by adding one thing to another to find an explanation.
Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a
thing? a man’s wisdom maketh his face to
shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
Who is like the wise man? Who knows the interpretation of a matter? A man’s wisdom brightens his face, and the sternness of his face is changed.
Be not
hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil
thing; for he doeth
whatsoever pleaseth him.
Do not
hasten to leave his presence, and do not
persist in a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases.
Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil
thing: and a wise man’s heart discerneth both time and judgment.
Whoever keeps his command will come to no
harm, and a wise heart knows the right time and procedure.
Then I
commended mirth, because a man hath no better
thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be
merry: for that shall
abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
So I
commended the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be
merry. For this joy will
accompany him in his labor during the days of his life that God gives him under the sun.
All
things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the
sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
It is the same for all: There is a common fate for the righteous and the wicked, for the good and the bad, for the clean and the unclean, for the one who sacrifices and the one who does not. As it is for the good, so it is for the
sinner; as it is for the one who makes a
vow, so it is for the one who refuses to take a
vow.
This is an evil among all
things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all:
yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive, and afterward they join the dead.
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their
envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any
thing that is done under the sun.
Their love, their
hate, and their
envy have already
vanished, and they will never again have a share in all that is done under the sun.
A feast is made for
laughter, and wine maketh
merry: but money answereth all
things.
A feast is prepared for
laughter, and wine makes life
merry, but money is the answer for everything.
As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the
womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a mother’s
womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all
things.
Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:
Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart
cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these
things God will bring thee into judgment.
Rejoice, O young man, while you are young, and let your heart be
glad in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and in the sight of your eyes, but know that for all these
things God will bring you to judgment.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil.
And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small
thing for you to
weary men, but will ye
weary my God also?
Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it not enough to try the
patience of men? Will you try the
patience of my God as well?
Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.
Sing to the LORD, for He has done glorious things. Let this be known in all the earth.
For the waters of Nimrim shall be
desolate: for the hay is
withered away, the grass faileth, there is no green
thing.
The waters of Nimrim are dried up, and the grass is
withered; the vegetation is gone, and the
greenery is no more.
The nations shall
rush like the
rushing of many waters: but God shall
rebuke them, and they shall
flee far off, and shall be
chased as the
chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling
thing before the
whirlwind.
The nations
rage like the
rush of many waters. He rebukes them, and they
flee far away, driven before the wind like
chaff on the hills, like tumbleweeds before a
gale.
The paper reeds by the
brooks, by the mouth of the
brooks, and every
thing sown by the
brooks, shall wither, be driven away, and be no more.
The bulrushes by the Nile, by the mouth of the river, and all the fields sown along the Nile, will wither, blow away, and be no more.
O LORD, thou art my God; I will
exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful
things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.
O LORD, You are my God! I will
exalt You; I will praise Your name. For You have worked wonders— plans formed long ago— in perfect faithfulness.
And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat
things, a feast of wines on the
lees, of fat
things full of
marrow, of wines on the
lees well refined.
On this mountain the LORD of Hosts will prepare a
banquet for all the peoples, a feast of aged wine, of choice meat, of finely aged wine.
Surely your turning of
things upside down shall be esteemed as the
potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the
thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
You have turned
things upside down, as if the
potter were regarded as clay. Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the
potter, “He has no understanding”?
That make a man an
offender for a word, and lay a
snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a
thing of
nought.
those who
indict a man with a word, who
ensnare the
mediator at the gate, and who with false charges deprive the innocent of justice.
Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets,
Prophesy not unto us right
things, speak unto us smooth
things,
prophesy deceits:
They say to the seers, “Stop seeing visions!” and to the prophets, “Do not
prophesy to us the truth! Speak to us pleasant words;
prophesy illusions.
But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.
But a noble man makes honorable plans; he stands up for worthy causes.
Come near, ye nations, to hear; and
hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all
things that come forth of it.
Come near, O nations, to
listen; pay attention, O peoples. Let the earth hear, and all that fills it, the world and all that springs from it.
And this shall be a sign unto thee from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he hath spoken;
This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised:
O Lord, by these
things men live, and in all these
things is the life of my spirit: so
wilt thou recover me, and make me to live.
O Lord, by such things men live, and in all of them my spirit finds life. You have restored me to health and have let me live.
And
Hezekiah was
glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious
things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And
Hezekiah welcomed the envoys
gladly and showed them what was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his entire
armory—all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
Behold, the nations are as a drop of a
bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little
thing.
Surely the nations are like a drop in a
bucket; they are considered a
speck of dust on the scales; He lifts up the islands like fine dust.
Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the
starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that
contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a
thing of
nought.
You will seek them but will not find them. Those who
wage war against you will come to nothing.
Let them bring them forth, and
shew us what shall happen: let them
shew the former
things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us
things for to come.
“Let them come and tell us what will happen. Tell the former
things, so that we may
reflect on them and know the outcome. Or
announce to us what is coming.
Shew the
things that are to come
hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods:
yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.
Tell us the
things that are to come, so that we may know that you are gods.
Yes, do something good or evil, that we may look on together in dismay.
Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.
Behold, the former
things have happened, and now I declare new
things. Before they spring forth I
proclaim them to you.”
And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and
crooked things straight. These
things will I do unto them, and not
forsake them.
I will lead the blind by a way they did not know; I will guide them on unfamiliar paths. I will turn darkness into light before them and rough places into level ground. These
things I will do for them, and I will not
forsake them.
Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.
Though seeing many things, you do not keep watch. Though your ears are open, you do not hear.”
Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and
shew us former
things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
All the nations gather together and the peoples
assemble. Who among them can declare this, and
proclaim to us the former
things? Let them present their witnesses to
vindicate them, so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
“Do not call to mind the former things; pay no attention to the things of old.
Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.
And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the
things that are coming, and shall come, let them
shew unto them.
Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case before Me, since I established an ancient people. Let him
foretell the
things to come, and what is to take place.
They that make a
graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be
ashamed.
All makers of idols are nothing, and the
things they
treasure are worthless. Their witnesses fail to see or
comprehend, so they are put to shame.
He feedeth on ashes: a
deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
He feeds on ashes. His
deluded heart has led him
astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is not this
thing in my right hand a lie?”
Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.
Remember these
things, O Jacob, for you are My servant, O Israel. I have made you, and you are My servant; O Israel, I will never
forget you.
