Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
“Who is this who obscures My counsel by words without knowledge?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
and I declared: ‘You may come this far, but no farther; here your proud waves must stop’?
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Have you surveyed the extent of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.
Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.
You asked, ‘Who is this who conceals My counsel without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.
After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.
After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.
I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son;
this day have I
begotten thee.
I will
proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD: “You are My Son;
today I have become Your Father.
O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;
O LORD my God, if I have done this, if injustice is on my hands,
Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and
brimstone, and an
horrible tempest:
this shall be the portion of their cup.
On the wicked He will rain down
fiery coals and sulfur; a
scorching wind will be their portion.
Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
You, O LORD, will keep us; You will
forever guard us from
this generation.
From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in
this life, and whose
belly thou fillest with thy
hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
from such men, O LORD, by Your hand— from men of the world whose portion is in
this life. May You fill the
bellies of Your
treasured ones and satisfy their sons, so they leave their abundance to their children.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.
They will come and
proclaim His righteousness to a people yet unborn— all that He has done.
This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob.
Selah.
Such is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face, O God of Jacob.
Selah Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
Who is this King of Glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
Who is
this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.
Selah.
Who is He,
this King of Glory? The LORD of Hosts— He is the King of Glory.
Selah Though an host should
encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in
this will I be
confident.
Though an army encamps around me, my heart will not fear; though a war breaks out against me, I will keep my trust.
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to
enquire in his temple.
One thing I have asked of the LORD;
this is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to
gaze on the beauty of the LORD and seek Him in His temple.
For
this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come
nigh unto him.
Therefore let all the godly pray to You while You may be found. Surely when great waters rise, they will not come near.
This poor man
cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; He saved him from all his troubles.
This thou hast seen, O LORD: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me.
O LORD, You have seen it; be not silent. O Lord, be not far from me.
By
this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy
doth not triumph over me.
By this I know that You delight in me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
All
this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or
betrayed Your covenant.
Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
For
this God is our God
forever and ever; He will be our guide even till death.
Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
Hear
this, all you peoples;
listen, all inhabitants of the world,
Now consider
this, ye that
forget God, lest I
tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
Now consider
this, you who
forget God, lest I
tear you to pieces, with no one to
rescue you:
Against thee, thee only, have I
sinned, and done
this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Against You, You only, have I
sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and
blameless when You judge.
Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
“Look at the man who did not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his wealth and strengthened himself by destruction.”
When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help. By this I will know that God is on my side.
God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: that power belongs to God,
Why
leap ye, ye high hills?
this is the hill which God desireth to dwell in;
yea, the LORD will dwell in it for ever.
Why do you
gaze in
envy, O mountains of many peaks?
This is the mountain God chose for His dwelling, where the LORD will surely dwell
forever.
This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or
bullock that hath horns and
hoofs.
And
this will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and
hooves.
The humble shall see
this, and be
glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
The humble will see and
rejoice. You who seek God, let your hearts be revived!
O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy
wondrous works.
O God, You have taught me from my youth, and to
this day I
proclaim Your
marvelous deeds.
Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God,
forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto
this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
Even when I am old and gray, do not
forsake me, O God, until I
proclaim Your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.
Therefore his people return
hither: and waters of a full cup are
wrung out to them.
So their people return to this place and drink up waters in abundance.
If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should
offend against the generation of thy children.
If I had said, “I will speak
this way,” then I would have
betrayed Your children.
When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
When I tried to understand all
this, it was
troublesome in my sight
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed;
this mount
Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe of Your inheritance— Mount
Zion where You dwell.
We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last.
Remember
this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the
foolish people have
blasphemed thy name.
And I said,
This is my
infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
So I said, “I am
grieved that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”
Therefore the LORD heard
this, and was
wroth: so a fire was
kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
Therefore the LORD heard and was filled with wrath; so a fire was
kindled against Jacob, and His anger
flared against Israel,
For all
this they
sinned still, and believed not for his
wondrous works.
In spite of all
this, they kept on
sinning;
despite His wonderful works, they did not believe.
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.
He brought them to His holy land, to the mountain His right hand had acquired.
On hearing it, God was
furious and rejected Israel completely.
Return, we
beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit
this vine;
Return, O God of Hosts, we pray! Look down from heaven and see! Attend to this vine—
For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.
For
this is a statute for Israel, an
ordinance of the God of Jacob.
This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.
He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt, where I heard an unfamiliar language:
I will make mention of
Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with
Ethiopia;
this man was born there.
“I will mention
Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me— along with Philistia, Tyre, and
Cush— when I say, ‘
This one was born in
Zion.’”
And of
Zion it shall be said,
This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.
And it will be said of
Zion: “
This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High Himself will establish her.”
The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, that
this man was born there.
Selah.
The LORD will record in the register of the peoples: “
This one was born in
Zion.”
Selah A senseless man does not know, and a
fool does not understand,
Forty years long was I
grieved with
this generation, and said, It is a people that do
err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
For forty years I was
angry with that generation, and I said, “They are a people whose hearts go
astray, and they have not known My ways.”
This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.
Let this be written for the generation to come, so that a people not yet created may praise the LORD.
So is
this great and wide sea, wherein are things
creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.
Here is the sea, vast and wide,
teeming with creatures beyond number, living things both great and small.
Let
this be the reward of mine
adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul.
May this be the LORD’s reward to my accusers, to those who speak evil against me.
That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it.
Let them know that this is Your hand, that You, O LORD, have done it.
Blessed be the name of the LORD from
this time forth and for
evermore.
Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forevermore.
But we will
bless the LORD from
this time forth and for
evermore. Praise the LORD.
But it is we who will
bless the LORD, both now and forevermore.
Hallelujah!
This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.
This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it.
This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is from the LORD, and it is
marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will
rejoice and be
glad in it.
This is the day that the LORD has made; we will
rejoice and be
glad in it.
This is my comfort in
affliction, that Your promise has given me life.
This I had, because I kept thy precepts.
This is my practice, for I obey Your precepts.
They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.
Your ordinances stand to this day, for all things are servants to You.
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from
this time forth, and even for
evermore.
The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.
In this way indeed shall blessing come to the man who fears the LORD.
This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.
“
This is My resting place
forever and ever; here I will dwell, for I have desired
this home.
I will praise thee; for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
I praise You, for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made.
Marvelous are Your works, and I know
this very well.
Happy is that people, that is in such a case:
yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.
Blessed are the people of whom this is so; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.
He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.
He has done
this for no other nation; they do not know His judgments.
Hallelujah!
To
execute upon them the judgment written:
this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.
to
execute the judgment written against them.
This honor is for all His saints.
Hallelujah!
It shall be health to thy
navel, and
marrow to thy bones.
This will bring
healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.
My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and
discretion:
My son, do not lose sight of
this: Preserve sound judgment and
discernment.
Do
this now, my son, deliver
thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble
thyself, and make sure thy friend.
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
For this commandment is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way to life,
I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
“I have made my peace offerings;
today I have paid my vows.
He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.
He who answers a matter before he hears it— this is folly and disgrace to him.
Say not thou, I will
recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Do not say, “I will
avenge this evil!” Wait on the LORD, and He will save you.
The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.
The rich and the poor have this in common: The LORD is Maker of them all.
That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not;
doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul,
doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?
If you say, “Behold, we did not know about this,” does not He who weighs hearts consider it? Does not the One who guards your life know? Will He not repay a man according to his deeds?
And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and
nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.
Thorns had grown up everywhere, thistles had covered the ground, and the stone wall was broken down.
The poor and the
deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes.
The poor man and the
oppressor have
this in common: The LORD gives light to the eyes of both.
The words of
Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
These are the words of
Agur son of Jakeh—the burden that
this man declared to Ithiel: “I am
weary, O God, and worn out.
Such is the way of an
adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.
This is the way of an
adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’
Is there any thing
whereof it may be said, See,
this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven:
this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised
therewith.
And I set my mind to seek and
explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that
this also is
vexation of spirit.
So I set my mind to know wisdom and madness and folly; I learned that this, too, is a pursuit of the wind.
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with
mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold,
this also is vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good!” But it proved to be
futile.
And
whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I
withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart
rejoiced in all my labour: and
this was my portion of all my labour.
Anything my eyes desired, I did not deny myself. I refused my heart no pleasure. For my heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.
Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the
fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that
this also is vanity.
So I said to myself, “The fate of the
fool will also
befall me. What then have I gained by being wise?” And I said to myself that
this too is
futile.
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a
fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun.
This is also vanity.
And who knows whether that man will be wise or
foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have worked
skillfully under the sun.
This too is
futile.
For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in
equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion.
This also is vanity and a great evil.
When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it,
this too is
futile and a great evil.
For all his days are sorrows, and his
travail grief;
yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night.
This is also vanity.
Indeed, all his days are filled with grief, and his task is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest.
This too is
futile.
There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the
sinner he giveth
travail, to gather and to
heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God.
This also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the
sinner He assigns the task of gathering and
accumulating that which he will hand over to one who pleases God.
This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
and also that every man should eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his labor—this is the gift of God.
