In that I command thee
this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in the land
whither thou goest to possess it.
For I am commanding you
today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and increase, and the LORD your God may
bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.
I
denounce unto you
this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not
prolong your days upon the land,
whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.
I declare to you
today that you will surely perish; you shall not
prolong your days in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
I call heaven and earth to record
this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you
today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing. Therefore choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,
And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
he said to them, “I am now a hundred and twenty years old; I am no longer able to come and go, and the LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’
And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with
this people unto the land which the LORD hath
sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to
inherit it.
Then Moses called for Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and
courageous, for you will go with
this people into the land that the LORD
swore to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.
And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel.
So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.
When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
when all Israel comes before the LORD your God at the place He will choose, you are to read this law in the hearing of all Israel.
Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:
Assemble the people—men, women, children, and the foreigners within your gates—so that they may
listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and to follow carefully all the words of
this law.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and
this people will rise up, and go a
whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land,
whither they go to be among them, and will
forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest with your fathers, and these people will rise up and
prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will
forsake Me and break the covenant I have made with them.
Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
Now therefore, write down for
yourselves this song and teach it to the Israelites; have them
recite it, so that it may be a witness for Me against them.
And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are
befallen them, that
this song shall
testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I
sware.
And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them,
this song will
testify against them, because it will not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. For I know their inclination, even before I bring them into the land that I
swore to give them.”
Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.
So that very day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites.
And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,
When Moses had finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end,
That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying,
he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD:
Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you
this day, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?
For I know how
rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are already rebelling against the LORD while I am still alive, how much more will you
rebel after my death!
And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.
Then Moses recited
aloud to the whole assembly of Israel the words of
this song from beginning to end:
Do ye thus requite the LORD, O
foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?
Is
this how you repay the LORD, O
foolish and senseless people? Is He not your Father and
Creator? Has He not made you and established you?
And when the LORD saw it, he
abhorred them, because of the
provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.
When the LORD saw
this, He rejected them,
provoked to anger by His sons and daughters.
Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their
adversaries should
behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD hath not done all
this.
if I had not
dreaded the
taunt of the enemy, lest their
adversaries misunderstand and say: ‘Our own hand has prevailed; it was not the LORD who did all
this.’”
O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!
If only they were wise, they would understand it; they would
comprehend their fate.
Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?
“Have I not stored up these things, sealed up within My vaults?
And Moses came and spake all the words of
this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of
Nun.
Then Moses came with Joshua son of
Nun and recited all the words of
this song in the hearing of the people.
And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I
testify among you
this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of
this law.
he said to them, “Take to heart all these words I
testify among you
today, so that you may command your children to carefully follow all the words of
this law.
For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through
this thing ye shall
prolong your days in the land,
whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.
For they are not idle words to you, because they are your life, and by them you will live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
Get thee up into
this mountain Abarim, unto mount
Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against
Jericho; and behold the land of
Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:
“Go up into the Abarim Range to Mount
Nebo, in the land of Moab across from
Jericho, and view the land of
Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites as their own possession.
And
this is the blessing,
wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death.
And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.
And concerning Judah he said: “O LORD, hear the cry of Judah and bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause, but may You be a help against his foes.”
And the LORD said unto him,
This is the land which I
sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.
And the LORD said to him, “
This is the land that I
swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.”
And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his
sepulchre unto
this day.
And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab facing Beth-peor, and no one to
this day knows the
location of his grave.
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, you and all these people, and cross over the Jordan into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel.
From the wilderness and
this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the
Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and
Lebanon to the great River Euphrates—all the land of the
Hittites—and west as far as the Great Sea.
Be strong and of a good courage: for unto
this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I
sware unto their fathers to give them.
Be strong and
courageous, for you shall give these people the inheritance of the land that I
swore to their fathers I would give them.
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth;
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will
prosper and succeed in all you do.
Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you
victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over
this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.
“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’”
Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.
“Remember what Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you when he said, ‘The LORD your God will give you rest, and He will give you this land.’
Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
Your wives, your young children, and your
livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on
this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of
valor must be armed for battle to cross over
ahead of your brothers and help them,
Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD’S servant gave you on
this side Jordan toward the
sunrising.
until the LORD gives them rest as He has done for you, and your brothers also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”
And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land
faint because of you.
and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of you.
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did
melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
When we heard
this, our hearts melted and
everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
“Our lives for your lives!” the men agreed. “If you do not report our mission, we will show you kindness and faithfulness when the LORD gives us the land.”
And the men said unto her, We will be
blameless of
this thine oath which thou hast made us
swear.
The men said to her, “We will not be bound by
this oath you made us
swear Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind
this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou
didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.
unless, when we enter the land, you have
tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother and brothers and all your family into your house.
And if thou utter
this our business, then we will be
quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to
swear.
And if you report our mission, we will be released from the oath you made us
swear.”
Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed
this way
heretofore.
But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between
yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled
this way before.”
And the LORD said unto Joshua,
This day will I begin to
magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.
Now the LORD said to Joshua, “
Today I will begin to
exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you just as I was with Moses.
And Joshua said,
Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Hivites, and the
Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the Jebusites.
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this night.
and command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the place where you
spend the night.’”
That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?
to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’
And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant stood. And the stones are there to this day.
Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
you are to tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’
That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.
He did this so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and so that you may always fear the LORD your God.”
And
this is the cause why Joshua did
circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
Now
this is why Joshua
circumcised them: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of war—had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.
And Joshua raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones he
circumcised. Until
this time they were still
uncircumcised, since they had not been
circumcised along the way.
And the LORD said unto Joshua,
This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called
Gilgal unto
this day.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “
Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So that place has been called
Gilgal to
this day.
And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days.
And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.
So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
And Joshua saved
Rahab the
harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto
this day; because she
hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to
spy out
Jericho.
And Joshua
spared Rahab the
prostitute, with her father’s household and all who belonged to her, because she
hid the men Joshua had sent to
spy out
Jericho. So she has lived among the Israelites to
this day.
And Joshua
adjured them at that time, saying,
Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth
this city
Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his
firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
At that time Joshua
invoked this solemn oath: “
Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds
this city,
Jericho; at the cost of his
firstborn he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.”
And Joshua said,
Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought
this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
“O, Lord GOD,” Joshua said, “why did You ever bring
this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
For the
Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall
environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what
wilt thou do unto thy great name?
When the
Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about
this, they will
surround us and
wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?”
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were
accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the
accursed from among you.
This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
Up,
sanctify the people, and say,
Sanctify yourselves against to
morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an
accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the
accursed thing from among you.
Get up and
consecrate the people, saying, ‘
Consecrate yourselves for
tomorrow, for
this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
And
Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have
sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
“It is true,”
Achan replied, “I have
sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel.
This is what I did:
And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
“Why have you brought
this trouble upon us?” said Joshua. “
Today the LORD will bring trouble upon you!” And all Israel stoned him to death. Then they stoned the others and burned their bodies.
And they raised over him a great
heap of stones unto
this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of
Achor, unto
this day.
And they
heaped over
Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to
this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of
Achor to
this day.
And when the men of
Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to
flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
When the men of
Ai turned and looked back, the smoke of the city was rising into the sky. They could not escape in any direction, and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now became the pursuers.
And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on
this side, and some on that side: and they
smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both sides. So Israel struck them down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
And Joshua burnt
Ai, and made it an
heap for ever, even a
desolation unto
this day.
So Joshua burned
Ai and made it a permanent
heap of ruins, a
desolation to
this day.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his
carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a great
heap of stones, that remaineth unto
this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua commanded that they take down the body from the tree and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to
this day.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on
this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on
this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against
Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is
mouldy:
This bread of ours was warm when we
packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and
moldy.
This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we
sware unto them.
This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we
swore to them.”
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done
this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done
this.
And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they
slew them not.
So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites.
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not
this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took
vengeance upon its enemies. Is
this not written in the Book of
Jashar? “So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.”
And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
“Do not be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua said. “Be strong and
courageous, for the LORD will do
this to all the enemies you fight.”
And afterward Joshua
smote them, and
slew them, and
hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings, and he hung their bodies on five trees and left them there until evening.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until
this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to
this day.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to
morrow about
this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt
hough their horses, and burn their
chariots with fire.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for by
this time
tomorrow I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You are to
hamstring their horses and burn up their
chariots.”
So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of
Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
So Joshua took
this entire region: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of
Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah, and the mountains of Israel and their foothills,
And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel
smote on
this side Jordan on the west, from
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to
Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;
And these are the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered beyond the Jordan to the west, from
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon to Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir (according to the allotments to the tribes of Israel, Joshua gave them as an inheritance
This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,
This is the land that remains:
Now therefore divide
this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of
Manasseh,
Now therefore divide
this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of
Manasseh.”
Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.
but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. So Geshur and Maacath dwell among the Israelites to this day.
And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of
Reuben inheritance according to their families.
This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of
Reuben:
And the border of the children of
Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof.
This was the inheritance of the children of
Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.
And the border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the clans of the Reubenites, including the cities and villages.
And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of
Gad, even unto the children of
Gad according to their families.
This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of
Gad:
This is the inheritance of the children of
Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.
This was the inheritance of the clans of the Gadites, including the cities and villages.
And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of
Manasseh: and
this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of
Manasseh by their families.
This is what Moses had given to the clans of the half-tribe of
Manasseh, that is, to half the tribe of the descendants of
Manasseh:
And half
Gilead, and
Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of
Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.
half of
Gilead; and
Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of
Og in
Bashan. All
this was for the clans of the descendants of Machir son of
Manasseh, that is, half of the descendants of Machir.
And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake
this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel
wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am
this day
fourscore and five years old.
Now behold, as the LORD promised, He has kept me alive these forty-five years since He spoke
this word to Moses, while Israel
wandered in the wilderness. So here I am
today, eighty-five years old,
As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
still as strong
today as I was the day Moses sent me out. As my strength was then, so it is now for war, for going out, and for coming in.
Now therefore give me
this mountain,
whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and
fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Now therefore give me
this hill country that the LORD promised me on that day, for you
yourself heard then that the
Anakim were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken.”
Hebron therefore became the inheritance of
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto
this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.
Therefore
Hebron belongs to
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to
this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.
This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of
Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the
uttermost part of the south coast.
Now the
allotment for the clans of the tribe of Judah extended to the border of
Edom, to the Wilderness of Zin at the extreme southern boundary:
From thence it passed toward Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shall be your south coast.
It proceeded to Azmon, joined the
Brook of Egypt, and ended at the Sea.
This was their southern border.
And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families.
And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea. These are the boundaries around the clans of the descendants of Judah.
