Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they
would not have
crucified the Lord of glory.
None of the rulers of this age understood it. For if they had, they
would not have
crucified the Lord of glory.
Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
Already you have all you want. Already you have become rich. Without us, you have become kings. How I wish you really were kings, so that we might be kings with you!
Now some are
puffed up, as though I
would not come to you.
Some of you have become
arrogant, as if I were not coming to you.
Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the
covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
I was not including the sexually immoral of this world, or the
greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you
would have to leave this world.
For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
For the unbelieving husband is
sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is
sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
For the unbelieving husband is
sanctified through his believing wife, and the unbelieving wife is
sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children
would be unclean, but now they are holy.
But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
I want you to be free from
concern. The unmarried man is concerned about the work of the Lord, how he can please the Lord.
But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this to suggest that something be done for me. Indeed, I
would rather die than let
anyone nullify my
boast.
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea.
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I
would not that ye should have
fellowship with devils.
No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment.
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
And if they were all one member, where were the body?
If they were all one part, where would the body be?
I
would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive
edifying.
I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I
would rather have you
prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be
edified.
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
But in the church, I
would rather speak five
coherent words to
instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
For we
would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength,
insomuch that we
despaired even of life:
We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the hardships we
encountered in the province of Asia. We were under a burden far beyond our ability to
endure, so that we
despaired even of life.
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
Indeed, we felt we were under the sentence of death, in order that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God, who raises the dead.
But I determined this with myself, that I
would not come again to you in
heaviness.
So I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you.
And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to
rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
I wrote as I did so that on my arrival I
would not be
saddened by those who ought to make me
rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you
would share my joy.
For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be
obedient in all things.
My purpose in writing you was to see if you
would stand the test and be
obedient in everything.
And not as Moses, which put a
vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not
stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
We are not like Moses, who
would put a
veil over his face to keep the Israelites from
gazing at the end of what was
fading away.
For we that are in this tabernacle do
groan, being burdened: not for that we
would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be
swallowed up of life.
So while we are in this tent, we
groan under our burdens, because we do not wish to be unclothed but clothed, so that our mortality may be
swallowed up by life.
We are
confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
We are
confident, then, and
would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you.
So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did wrong or the one who was
harmed, but rather that your earnestness on our behalf
would be made clear to you in the sight of God.
Praying us with much intreaty that we
would receive the gift, and take upon us the
fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
they earnestly
pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
Insomuch that we desired
Titus, that as he had begun, so he
would also finish in you the same grace also.
So we urged
Titus to help complete your act of grace, just as he had started it.
Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—to say nothing of you—
would be
ashamed of having been so
confident.
Therefore I thought it necessary to
exhort the brethren, that they
would go before unto you, and make up
beforehand your
bounty,
whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of
bounty, and not as of
covetousness.
So I thought it necessary to
urge the brothers to visit you
beforehand and make arrangements for the
bountiful gift you had promised. This way, your gift will be prepared generously and not begrudgingly.
That I may not seem as if I
would terrify you by letters.
I do not want to seem to be trying to
frighten you by my letters.
Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me.
I hope you will bear with a little of my
foolishness, but you are already doing that.
That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, but as it were
foolishly, in this confidence of
boasting.
For though I
would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I wanted to
boast, I
would not be a
fool, because I
would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you as I wish, and you may not find me as you wish. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy,
rage,
rivalry,
slander,
gossip,
arrogance, and disorder.
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and
would pervert the gospel of Christ.
which is not even a gospel. Evidently some people are troubling you and trying to
distort the gospel of Christ.
For do I now
persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
Am I now seeking the
approval of men, or of God? Or am I
striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I
would not be a servant of Christ.
To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
They only asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
And the scripture,
foreseeing that God
would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
The Scripture foresaw that God
would justify the Gentiles by faith, and
foretold the gospel to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
Is the law then against the promises of God? God
forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life,
verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law.
Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye
would have
plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
What then has become of your blessing? For I can
testify that, if it were possible, you
would have
torn out your eyes and given them to me.
They
zealously affect you, but not well;
yea, they
would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
Those people are
zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to
isolate you from us, so that you may be
zealous for them.
I would they were even cut off which trouble you.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, would be for the praise of His glory.
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
I ask that out of the riches of His glory He may
strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,
Servants, be
obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and
trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear and
sincerity of heart, just as you
would obey Christ.
But I
would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the
furtherance of the gospel;
Now I want you to know, brothers, that my circumstances have actually served to advance the gospel.
To whom God
would make known what is the riches of the glory of this
mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this
mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
For I
would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
For I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at
Laodicea, and for all who have not met me face to face,
Withal praying also for us, that God
would open unto us a door of
utterance, to speak the
mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
as you pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, so that we may
proclaim the
mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.
For ye remember, brethren, our labour and
travail: for labouring night and day, because we
would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.
Surely you recall, brothers, our labor and
toil. We worked night and day so that we
would not be a burden to
anyone while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.
That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
encouraging you, comforting you, and
urging you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
Wherefore we
would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but
Satan hindered us.
For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again and again—but
Satan obstructed us.
That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for
yourselves know that we are appointed
thereunto.
so that none of you
would be
shaken by these trials. For you know that we are destined for this.
For
verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer
tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
Indeed, when we were with you, we kept
warning you that we
would suffer persecution; and as you know, it has come to pass.
Furthermore then we
beseech you, brethren, and
exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye
would abound more and more.
Finally, brothers, we ask and
encourage you in the Lord Jesus to live in a way that is pleasing to God, just as you have received from us. This is how you already live, so you should do so all the more.
But I
would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not
grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
To this end, we always pray for you, that our God will count you worthy of His calling, and that He will powerfully
fulfill your every good desire and work of faith,
And with all
deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
and with every wicked
deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that
would have saved them.
Neither did we eat any man’s bread for
nought; but wrought with labour and
travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
nor did we eat
anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and
toil, we worked night and day so that we
would not be a burden to any of you.
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If
anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.”
But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect
patience as an example to those who
would believe in Him for eternal life.
Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion.
For this cause left I thee in
Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and
ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
The reason I left you in
Crete was that you
would set in order what was unfinished and
appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
so that, having been justified by His grace, we would become heirs with the hope of eternal life.
Whom I
would have retained with me, that in thy
stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
I would have liked to keep him with me, so that on your behalf he could minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of
compulsion, but by your own free will.
If thou count me therefore a
partner, receive him as myself.
So if you consider me a
partner, receive him as you
would receive me.
And Moses
verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
Now Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,
testifying to what
would be spoken later.
And to whom
sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
And to whom did He
swear that they
would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed?
For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are already priests who offer gifts according to the law.
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
For if that first covenant had been without fault, no place would have been sought for a second.
For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
For then
would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once
purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
If it could,
would not the offerings have ceased? For the worshipers
would have been
cleansed once for all, and
would no longer have felt the guilt of their sins.
Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me.
Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
In the passage above He says, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not desire, nor did You delight in them” (although they are offered according to the law).
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing
whither he went.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, without knowing where he was going.
And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.
And what shall I more say? for the time
would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of
Barak, and of
Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
And what more shall I say? Time will not allow me to tell of
Gideon,
Barak,
Samson,
Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets,
God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
God had
planned something better for us, so that together with us they
would be made perfect.
For ye know how that afterward, when he
would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of
repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
For you know that afterward, when he wanted to
inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for
repentance, though he sought the blessing with tears.
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit
yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Of his own will
begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation.
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it
would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him
refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no
guile:
For, “
Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from
deceitful speech.
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to have known it and then to turn away from the holy commandment passed on to them.
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us.
Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
I have many things to write to you, but I
would prefer not to do so with paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come and speak with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth,
prating against us with
malicious words: and not content
therewith, neither
doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that
would, and casteth them out of the church.
So if I come, I will call attention to his
malicious slander against us. And unsatisfied with that, he refuses to
welcome the brothers and forbids those who want to do so, even putting them out of the church.
I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
I have many things to write to you, but I
would prefer not to do so with pen and ink.
But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of
Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit
fornication.
But I have a few things against you, because some of you hold to the teaching of
Balaam, who taught Balak to place a
stumbling block before the Israelites so they
would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality.
