Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen
breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the
altar, and he shall put them beside the
altar.
And the priest shall put on his linen
robe and linen undergarments, and he shall remove from the
altar the ashes of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed and place them beside it.
And the fire upon the
altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn
thereon the fat of the peace offerings.
The fire on the
altar shall be kept burning; it must not be
extinguished. Every morning the priest is to add wood to the fire, arrange the burnt offering on it, and burn the fat portions of the peace offerings on it.
The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.
The fire shall be kept burning on the
altar continually; it must not be
extinguished.
And this is the law of the meat offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD, before the altar.
Now this is the law of the grain offering: Aaron’s sons shall present it before the LORD in front of the altar.
And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the
frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the
altar for a sweet savour, even the
memorial of it, unto the LORD.
The priest is to remove a handful of fine flour and olive oil, together with all the
frankincense from the grain offering, and burn the
memorial portion on the
altar as a pleasing
aroma to the LORD.
In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they kill the
trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he
sprinkle round about upon the
altar.
The guilt offering must be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and the priest shall
sprinkle its blood on all sides of the
altar.
And the priest shall burn them upon the
altar for an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a
trespass offering.
The priest shall burn them on the altar as an offering made by fire to the LORD; it is a guilt offering.
And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar: but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’.
The priest is to burn the fat on the altar, but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons.
He
sprinkled some of the oil on the
altar seven times,
anointing the
altar and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand, to
consecrate them.
And he
slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the
altar round about with his finger, and
purified the
altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the
altar, and
sanctified it, to make
reconciliation upon it.
Moses slaughtered the bull, took some of the blood, and applied it with his finger to all four horns of the
altar,
purifying the
altar. He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the
altar and consecrated it so that
atonement could be made on it.
And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards, and
caul above the liver, and the two
kidneys, and their fat, and Moses burned it upon the
altar.
Moses also took all the fat that was on the
entrails, the
lobe of the liver, and both
kidneys and their fat, and burned it all on the
altar.
And he killed it; and Moses
sprinkled the blood upon the
altar round about.
Moses slaughtered the ram and
sprinkled the blood on all sides of the
altar.
And he washed the inwards and the legs in water; and Moses burnt the whole ram upon the altar: it was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet savour, and an offering made by fire unto the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
He washed the
entrails and legs with water and burned the entire ram on the
altar as a burnt offering, a pleasing
aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And he brought Aaron’s sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the
tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses
sprinkled the blood upon the
altar round about.
Moses also presented Aaron’s sons and put some of the blood on their right earlobes, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the
big toes of their right feet. Then he
sprinkled the blood on all sides of the
altar.
And Moses took them from off their hands, and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt offering: they were consecrations for a sweet savour: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
Then Moses took these from their hands and burned them on the
altar with the burnt offering. This was an
ordination offering, a pleasing
aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD.
And Moses took of the
anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the
altar, and
sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons’ garments with him; and
sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons’ garments with him.
Next, Moses took some of the
anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the
altar and
sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments, and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments, as well as Aaron’s sons and their garments.
And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the
altar, and offer thy sin offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an
atonement for
thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an
atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.
Then Moses said to Aaron, “Approach the
altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering to make
atonement for
yourself and for the people. And sacrifice the people’s offering to make
atonement for them, as the LORD has commanded.”
Aaron therefore went unto the
altar, and
slew the
calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.
So Aaron approached the
altar and slaughtered the
calf as a sin offering for himself.
And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he
dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the
altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the
altar:
The sons of Aaron brought the blood to him, and he
dipped his finger in the blood and applied it to the horns of the
altar. And he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the
altar.
But the fat, and the
kidneys, and the
caul above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt upon the
altar; as the LORD commanded Moses.
On the
altar he burned the fat, the
kidneys, and the
lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And he
slew the burnt offering; and Aaron’s sons presented unto him the blood, which he
sprinkled round about upon the
altar.
Then Aaron slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons brought him the blood, and he
sprinkled it on all sides of the
altar.
And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head: and he burnt them upon the altar.
They brought him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar.
And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering on the altar.
He washed the
entrails and the legs and burned them
atop the burnt offering on the
altar.
And he brought the meat offering, and took an handful thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning.
Next he presented the grain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.
He
slew also the
bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron’s sons presented unto him the blood, which he
sprinkled upon the
altar round about,
Then he slaughtered the ox and the ram as the people’s peace offering. His sons brought him the blood, and he
sprinkled it on all sides of the
altar.
And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar:
and placed these on the breasts. Aaron burned the fat portions on the altar,
And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the
altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they
shouted, and fell on their faces.
Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the
altar. And when all the people saw it, they
shouted for joy and fell facedown.
And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto
Eleazar and unto
Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without
leaven beside the
altar: for it is most holy:
And Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons,
Eleazar and
Ithamar, “Take the grain offering that remains from the offerings made by fire to the LORD and eat it without
leaven beside the
altar, because it is most holy.
And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the meat offering upon the
altar: and the priest shall make an
atonement for him, and he shall be clean.
and offer it on the
altar, with the grain offering, to make
atonement for him, and he will be clean.
And he shall take a
censer full of burning coals of fire from off the
altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the
vail:
Then he must take a
censer full of burning coals from the
altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of finely ground
fragrant incense, and take them inside the
veil.
And he shall go out unto the
altar that is before the LORD, and make an
atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the
bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the
altar round about.
Then he shall go out to the
altar that is before the LORD and make
atonement for it. He is to take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the
altar.
And when he hath made an end of
reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the
altar, he shall bring the live goat:
When Aaron has finished
purifying the Most Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting, and the
altar, he is to bring forward the live goat.
And the fat of the sin offering shall he burn upon the altar.
He is also to burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.
And he shall make an
atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an
atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the
altar, and he shall make an
atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.
and make
atonement for the Most Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting, and the
altar, and for the priests and all the people of the assembly.
And the priest shall
sprinkle the blood upon the
altar of the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and burn the fat for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
The priest will then
sprinkle the blood on the
altar of the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and burn the fat as a pleasing
aroma to the LORD.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the
altar to make an
atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an
atonement for the soul.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make
atonement for your souls upon the
altar; for it is the blood that makes
atonement for the soul.
but because he has a defect, he must not go near the
veil or approach the
altar, so as not to
desecrate My
sanctuaries. For I am the LORD who sanctifies them.’”
Blind, or broken, or
maimed, or having a
wen, or
scurvy, or
scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them upon the
altar unto the LORD.
You are not to present to the LORD any animal that is blind, injured, or
maimed, or anything with a running
sore, a
festering rash, or a
scab; you must not put any of these on the
altar as an offering made by fire to the LORD.
And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall
abhor you.
I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense
altars, and
heap your lifeless bodies on the lifeless remains of your idols; and My soul will
despise you.
And the hangings of the court, and the
curtain for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the
altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.
the curtains of the
courtyard, the
curtain for the entrance to the
courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and
altar, and the cords—all the service for these items.
And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the
candlestick, and the
altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary
wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.
Their duties were the ark, the table, the lampstand, the
altars, the articles of the sanctuary used with them, and the
curtain—all the service for these items.
And upon the golden
altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put to the
staves thereof:
Over the gold
altar they are to spread a blue cloth, cover it with fine leather, and
insert the poles.
And they shall take away the ashes from the
altar, and spread a purple cloth
thereon:
Then they shall remove the ashes from the bronze altar, spread a purple cloth over it,
And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof,
wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the
altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers skins, and put to the
staves of it.
and place on it all the vessels used to serve there: the firepans, meat forks, shovels, and
sprinkling bowls—all the
equipment of the
altar. They are to spread over it a covering of fine leather and
insert the poles.
And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.
the curtains of the
courtyard, and the curtains for the entrance at the gate of the
courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and
altar, along with their ropes and all the
equipment for their service. The Gershonites will do all that needs to be done with these items.
Then the priest shall take the jealousy offering out of the woman’s hand, and shall wave the offering before the LORD, and offer it upon the altar:
The priest shall take from her hand the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD, and bring it to the altar.
And the priest shall take an handful of the offering, even the
memorial thereof, and burn it upon the
altar, and afterward shall cause the woman to drink the water.
Then the priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a
memorial portion and burn it on the
altar; after that he is to have the woman drink the water.
And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had
anointed it, and
sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the
altar and all the vessels thereof, and had
anointed them, and
sanctified them;
On the day Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, he
anointed and consecrated it and all its furnishings, along with the
altar and all its utensils.
And the princes offered for
dedicating of the
altar in the day that it was
anointed, even the princes offered their offering before the
altar.
When the
altar was
anointed, the leaders approached with their offerings for its
dedication and presented them before the
altar.
And the LORD said unto Moses, They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for the
dedicating of the
altar.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Each day one leader is to present his offering for the
dedication of the
altar.”
This was the
dedication of the
altar, in the day when it was
anointed, by the princes of Israel: twelve chargers of silver, twelve silver
bowls, twelve spoons of gold:
So these were the offerings from the leaders of Israel for the
dedication of the
altar when it was
anointed: twelve silver platters, twelve silver
bowls, and twelve gold dishes.
And all the oxen for the sacrifice of the peace offerings were twenty and four bullocks, the rams sixty, the he goats sixty, the lambs of the first year sixty. This was the
dedication of the
altar, after that it was
anointed.
All the
livestock sacrificed for the peace offering totaled twenty-four bulls, sixty rams, sixty male goats, and sixty male lambs a year old. This was the
dedication offering for the
altar after it was
anointed.
The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the
altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are
hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
As for the censers of those who
sinned at the cost of their own lives, hammer them into sheets to overlay the
altar, for these were presented before the LORD, and so have become holy. They will serve as a sign to the Israelites.”
And
Eleazar the priest took the
brasen censers,
wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the
altar:
So
Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the
altar,
And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a
censer, and put fire therein from off the
altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an
atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun.
Moses said to Aaron, “Take your
censer, place fire from the
altar in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the congregation and make
atonement for them, because wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has begun.”
And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not come
nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the
altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die.
And they shall attend to your duties and to all the duties of the Tent; but they must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die.
And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.
And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary and of the altar, so that wrath may not fall on the Israelites again.
Therefore thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priest’s office for every thing of the
altar, and within the
vail; and ye shall serve: I have given your priest’s office unto you as a service of gift: and the stranger that cometh
nigh shall be put to death.
But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood for everything concerning the
altar and what is inside the
veil, and you are to perform that service. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift, but any outsider who comes near the sanctuary must be put to death.”
But the
firstling of a cow, or the
firstling of a sheep, or the
firstling of a goat, thou shalt not
redeem; they are holy: thou shalt
sprinkle their blood upon the
altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
But you must not
redeem the
firstborn of an ox, a sheep, or a goat; they are holy. You are to
sprinkle their blood on the
altar and burn their fat as an offering made by fire, a pleasing
aroma to the LORD.
And
Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven
altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.
Then
Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me seven
altars here, and prepare for me seven bulls and seven rams.”
And Balak did as
Balaam had spoken; and Balak and
Balaam offered on every
altar a
bullock and a ram.
And God met
Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven
altars, and I have offered upon every
altar a
bullock and a ram.
and God met with him. “I have set up seven
altars,”
Balaam said, “and on each
altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of
Pisgah, and built seven
altars, and offered a
bullock and a ram on every
altar.
So Balak took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of
Pisgah, where he built seven
altars and offered a bull and a ram on each
altar.
And
Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven
altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.
Then
Balaam said, “Build for me seven
altars here, and prepare for me seven bulls and seven rams.”
And Balak did as
Balaam had said, and offered a
bullock and a ram on every
altar.
So Balak did as
Balaam had
instructed, and he offered a bull and a ram on each
altar.
But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their
altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their
graven images with fire.
Instead, this is what you are to do to them:
tear down their
altars,
smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their idols in the fire.
And ye shall overthrow their
altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall
hew down the
graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.
Tear down their
altars,
smash their sacred pillars, burn up their Asherah poles, cut down the idols of their gods, and
wipe out their names from every place.
And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh.
Present the meat and blood of your burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD your God. The blood of your other sacrifices must be poured out beside the altar of the LORD your God, but you may eat the meat.
Thou shalt not plant thee a
grove of any trees near unto the
altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.
Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole next to the altar you will build for the LORD your God,
And the priest shall take the
basket out of thine hand, and set it down before the
altar of the LORD thy God.
Then the priest shall take the
basket from your hands and place it before the
altar of the LORD your God,
And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them.
Thou shalt build the
altar of the LORD thy God of whole stones: and thou shalt offer burnt offerings
thereon unto the LORD thy God:
You shall build the altar of the LORD your God with uncut stones and offer upon it burnt offerings to the LORD your God.
They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.
He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law to Israel; he will set incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar.
Then Joshua built an
altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount
Ebal,
At that time Joshua built an
altar on Mount
Ebal to the LORD, the God of Israel,
As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an
altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered
thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: “an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.” And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD, and they sacrificed peace offerings.
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of
Canaan, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh built there an
altar by Jordan, a great
altar to see to.
And when they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of
Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh built an imposing
altar there by the Jordan.
And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh have built an
altar over against the land of
Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh have built an
altar on the border of the land of
Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the
Israelite side.”
Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What
trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an
altar, that ye might
rebel this day against the LORD?
“This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says: ‘What is this breach of faith you have committed
today against the God of Israel by turning away from the LORD and building for
yourselves an
altar, that you might
rebel against the LORD this day?
Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but
rebel not against the LORD, nor
rebel against us, in building you an
altar beside the
altar of the LORD our God.
If indeed the land of your inheritance is unclean, then cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take possession of it among us. But do not
rebel against the LORD or against us by building for
yourselves an
altar other than the
altar of the LORD our God.
That we have built us an
altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer
thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings
thereon, let the LORD himself require it;
If we have built for ourselves an
altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice
fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable.
Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:
That is why we said, ‘Let us take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.
Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Therefore we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the
replica of the
altar of the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’
God
forbid that we should
rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an
altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the
altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him
today by building an
altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the
altar of the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle.”
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad called the
altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.
So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall
tear down their
altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?
Then
Gideon built an
altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.
So
Gideon built an
altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young
bullock, even the second
bullock of seven years old, and throw down the
altar of
Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the
grove that is by it:
On that very night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old,
tear down your father’s
altar to
Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.
And build an
altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second
bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the
grove which thou shalt cut down.
Then build a proper
altar to the LORD your God on the top of this
stronghold. And with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down, take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the
altar of
Baal was cast down, and the
grove was cut down that was by it, and the second
bullock was offered upon the
altar that was built.
When the men of the city got up in the morning, there was
Baal’s
altar torn down, with the Asherah pole cut down beside it and the second bull offered up on the newly built
altar.
Then the men of the city said unto
Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the
altar of
Baal, and because he hath cut down the
grove that was by it.
Then the men of the city said to
Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has
torn down
Baal’s
altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”
And
Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye
plead for
Baal? will ye save him? he that will
plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him
plead for himself, because one hath cast down his
altar.
But
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you
contending for
Baal? Are you trying to save him?
Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a god, let him
contend for himself with the one who has
torn down his
altar.”
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let
Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his
altar.
So on that day
Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let
Baal contend with him,” because he had
torn down
Baal’s
altar.
For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the
altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the
altar. And
Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.
