mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
The man gave names to all the
livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field.
But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”

Abel. And
Abel was a keeper of sheep,
but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Later she gave birth to
Cain’s brother
Abel. Now
Abel was a keeper of sheep, while
Cain was a tiller of the soil.
But unto
Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And
Cain was very
wroth, and his countenance fell.
but He had no regard for
Cain and his offering. So
Cain became very
angry, and his countenance fell.
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?
But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is
crouching at your door; it desires you,
but you must master it.”
And
Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.
But I will establish My covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.
And God remembered
Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
But God remembered
Noah and all the animals and
livestock that were with him in the ark. And God sent a wind over the earth, and the waters began to
subside.
But the
dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
But the
dove found no place to rest her foot, and she returned to him in the ark, because the waters were still covering the surface of all the earth. So he reached out his hand and brought her back inside the ark.
And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the
dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
And
Noah waited seven more days and sent out the
dove again,
but this time she did not return to him.
But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
But you must not eat meat with its
lifeblood still in it.

And he
drank of the wine, and was
drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
But when he
drank some of its wine, he became
drunk and uncovered himself inside his tent.
But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
But Sarai was barren; she had no children.
And Terah took
Abram his son, and Lot the son of
Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son
Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from
Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of
Canaan; and they came unto
Haran, and dwelt there.
And Terah took his son
Abram, his grandson Lot son of
Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai the wife of
Abram, and they set out from
Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of
Canaan.
But when they arrived in
Haran, they settled there.
Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.
and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.
And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
But the land was unable to support both of them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to
coexist.
Abram dwelled in the land of
Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
Abram lived in the land of
Canaan,
but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
But the men of
Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
But the men of
Sodom were wicked,
sinning greatly against the LORD.
And the
vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of
Sodom and
Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.
Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and as the kings of
Sodom and
Gomorrah fled, some men fell into the pits,
but the survivors fled to the hill country.
And the king of
Sodom said unto
Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to
thyself.
And
Abram said to the king of
Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the
possessor of heaven and earth,
But Abram replied to the king of
Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth,
Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre; let them take their portion.
I will accept nothing
but what my men have eaten and the share for the men who went with me—Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre. They may take their portion.”
And
Abram said, Lord GOD, what
wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the
steward of my house is this
Eliezer of Damascus?
But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?”
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir;
but he that shall come forth out of thine own
bowels shall be thine heir.
Then the word of the LORD came to
Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir,
but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.”
And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall
inherit it?
But Abram replied, “Lord GOD, how can I know that I will possess it?”
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
So
Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them down the middle, and laid the
halves opposite each other. The birds, however, he did not cut in half.
And when the fowls came down upon the carcases,
Abram drove them away.
And the birds of prey descended on the
carcasses,
but Abram drove them away.
And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
But I will judge the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will depart with many possessions.
But in the fourth generation they shall come
hither again: for the iniquity of the
Amorites is not yet full.
In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the
Amorites is not yet complete.”
Now Sarai
Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an
handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was
Hagar.
And he went in unto
Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her
mistress was
despised in her eyes.
But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy
maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
“Here,” said
Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated
Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
Neither shall thy name any more be called
Abram,
but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
No longer will you be called
Abram,
but your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
But if any male is not
circumcised, he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai,
but Sarah shall her name be.
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai, for her name is to be
Sarah.
And God said,
Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an
everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
But God replied, “Your wife
Sarah will indeed bear you a son, and you are to name him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an
everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which
Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
But I will establish My covenant with Isaac, whom
Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.”
And he took
butter, and milk, and the
calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.
Then Abraham brought curds and milk and the
calf that had been prepared, and he set them before the men and stood by them under the tree as they
ate.
But Sarah was afraid, so she denied it and said, “I did not
laugh.” “No,” replied the LORD, “
but you did
laugh.”
And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward
Sodom:
but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
And the two men turned away and went toward
Sodom,
but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.
And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:
Then Abraham answered, “Now that I have
ventured to speak to the Lord—though I am
but dust and ashes—
And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak:
Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be
angry,
but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.”
And he said, Oh let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak yet
but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord not be
angry,
but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy it.”
And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and
tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said,
Nay;
but we will
abide in the street all night.
and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and
spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will
spend the night in the square.”
And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did
bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and
baked unleavened bread, and they
ate.
But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of
Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of
Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I have two daughters who have never
slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please.
But do not do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city.
But he seemed as one that
mocked unto his sons in law.
So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were
pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!”
But his sons-in-law thought he was
joking.
And while he
lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being
merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
But when Lot
hesitated, the men
grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s
compassion for them.
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast
magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by
sparing my life.
But I cannot run to the mountains; the
disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a
pillar of salt.
But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a
pillar of salt.
But God came to
Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art
but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.
One night, however, God came to
Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”
But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord,
wilt thou
slay also a righteous nation?
Now
Abimelech had not gone near her, so he replied, “Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?
Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet; he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, be aware that you will surely die—you and all who belong to you.”
And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father—though not the daughter of my mother—and she became my wife.
And
Sarah saw the son of
Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham,
mocking.
But Sarah saw that the son whom
Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was
mocking her son,
And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be
grievous in thy sight because of the
lad, and because of thy
bondwoman; in all that
Sarah hath said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your
maidservant.
Listen to everything that
Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
And also of the son of the
bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
Now therefore
swear unto me here by God that thou
wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son:
but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast
sojourned.
Now, therefore,
swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
And Abraham reproved
Abimelech because of a well of water, which
Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.
And
Abimelech said, I
wot not who hath done this thing: neither
didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it,
but to day.
Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until
today.”
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our
sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall
withhold from thee his
sepulchre,
but that thou mayest
bury thy dead.
“
Listen to us, sir. You are God’s chosen one among us.
Bury your dead in the finest of our tombs. None of us will
withhold his tomb for
burying your dead.”
And he spake unto Ephron in the
audience of the people of the land, saying,
But if thou
wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will
bury my dead there.
and said to Ephron in their presence, “If you will please
listen to me, I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it from me, so that I may
bury my dead there.”
My lord,
hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that
betwixt me and thee?
bury therefore thy dead.
“
Listen to me, my lord. The land is worth four hundred shekels of silver,
but what is that between you and me?
Bury your dead.”
But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
but will go to my country and my kindred to take a wife for my son Isaac.”
And there was set meat before him to eat:
but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine
errand. And he said, Speak on.
Then a meal was set before the man,
but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I came to say.” So
Laban said, “Please speak.”
But thou shalt go unto my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son.
but you shall go to my father’s house and to my kindred to take a wife for my son.’
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know, so that I may go elsewhere.”
And her brother and her mother said, Let the
damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
But her brother and mother said, “Let the
girl remain with us ten days or so. After that, she may go.”
And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath
prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD has made my journey a success. Send me on my way so that I may go to my master.”
But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.
But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.
And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to
enquire of the LORD.
But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So
Rebekah went to inquire of the LORD,
Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved
Esau;
but Rebekah loved Jacob.
And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for
Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
But when the men of that place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” since he thought to himself, “The men of this place will kill me on account of
Rebekah, because she is so beautiful.”
And the herdmen of
Gerar did
strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they
strove with him.
But the herdsmen of
Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they
contended with him.
That thou
wilt do us no
hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing
but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
that you will not
harm us, just as we have not
harmed you
but have done only good to you, sending you on your way in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”
And Jacob said to
Rebekah his mother, Behold,
Esau my brother is a
hairy man, and I am a smooth man:
And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.
But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice,
but the hands are the hands of
Esau.
So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob,
but the hands are the hands of
Esau.”
And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy
firstborn Esau.
But his father Isaac replied, “Who are you?” “I am
Esau, your
firstborn son,” he answered.
And he said, Thy brother came with
subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.
But Isaac replied, “Your brother came
deceitfully and took your blessing.”
And Isaac answered and said unto
Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
But Isaac answered
Esau: “Look, I have made him your master and given him all his relatives as servants; I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
And
Esau said unto his father, Hast thou
but one blessing, my father?
bless me, even me also, O my father. And
Esau lifted up his voice, and
wept.
Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father?
Bless me too, O my father!” Then
Esau wept aloud.
And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
You shall live by the sword and serve your brother.
But when you
rebel, you will
tear his yoke from your neck.”
And he was afraid, and said, How
dreadful is this place! this is none other
but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
And he was afraid and said, “How
awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”
And he called the name of that place
Bethel:
but the name of that city was called
Luz at the first.
and he called that place
Bethel, though previously the city had been named
Luz.
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
But they replied, “We cannot, until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.”
Leah was tender
eyed;
but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.
Leah had weak eyes,
but Rachel was shapely and beautiful.
And Jacob served seven years for
Rachel; and they seemed unto him
but a few days, for the love he had to her.
So Jacob served seven years for
Rachel, yet it seemed
but a few days because of his love for her.
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
But when evening came,
Laban took his daughter Leah and gave her to Jacob, and he
slept with her.
And when the LORD saw that Leah was
hated, he opened her
womb:
but Rachel was barren.
When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her
womb;
but Rachel was barren.
