And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a
shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a
shekel, shall be to
morrow about this time in the
gate of Samaria:
It happened just as the man of God had told the king: “About this time
tomorrow at the
gate of Samaria, two seahs of barley will sell for a
shekel, and a
seah of fine flour will sell for a
shekel.”
And so it fell out unto him: for the people
trode upon him in the
gate, and he died.
And that is just what happened to him. The people
trampled him in the
gateway, and he died.

Jehu entered in at the
gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who
slew his master?
And as
Jehu entered the
gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, O Zimri, murderer of your master?”
And there came a
messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the
gate until the morning.
When the
messenger arrived, he told
Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the sons of the king.” And
Jehu ordered, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the
gate until morning.”
And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.
a third shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third at the gate behind the guards. You are to take turns guarding the temple—
And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.
He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace by way of the
Gate of the Guards. Then
Joash took his seat on the royal throne,
And Jehoash king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of
Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the
gate of Ephraim unto the corner
gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of

Ahaziah. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim
Gate to the Corner

Then Menahem
smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not to him, therefore he
smote it; and all the women therein that were with child he
ripped up.
At that time Menahem, starting from Tirzah, attacked Tiphsah and
everyone in its vicinity, because they would not open their
gates. So he attacked Tiphsah and
ripped open all the
pregnant women.
Howbeit the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense still in the high places. He built the higher

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and
defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beer-
sheba, and
brake down the high places of the
gates that were in the entering in of the
gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man’s left hand at the
gate of the city.
Then
Josiah brought all the priests from the cities of Judah and
desecrated the high places, from Geba to
Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He
tore down the high places of the
gates at the entrance of the
gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which was to the left of the city
gate.
And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
And the
porters were, Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum was the chief;
These were the gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their relatives.
Who hitherto waited in the king’s
gate eastward: they were
porters in the companies of the children of Levi.

And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the
gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the LORD, were keepers of the entry.
Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah, and his relatives from the Korahites were assigned to guard the thresholds of the Tent, just as their fathers had been assigned to guard the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, and the Lord was with him.
In earlier times
Phinehas son of
Eleazar had been in charge of the
gatekeepers, and the LORD was with him.
And
Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was porter of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the
gatekeeper at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
All these which were chosen to be
porters in the
gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their
genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the
seer did
ordain in their set office.
The number of those chosen to be
gatekeepers at the thresholds was 212. They were registered by
genealogy in their villages. David and Samuel the
seer had appointed them to their positions of trust.
So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.
So they and their descendants were assigned to guard the gates of the house of the LORD—the house called the Tent.
In four quarters were the
porters, toward the east, west, north, and south.
The gatekeepers were stationed on the four sides: east, west, north, and south.
For these Levites, the four chief
porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and
treasuries of the house of God.
But the four chief
gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the rooms and the
treasuries of the house of God.
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of
Bethlehem, that is at the
gate!

gate of
Bethlehem!”
And the three
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the
gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
So the Three broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the
gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And with them their brethren of the second degree,
Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-
edom, and Jeiel, the
porters.
and with them their brothers next in rank:
Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, and the
gatekeepers Obed-
edom and Jeiel.
along with Obed-
edom and his sixty-eight relatives. Obed-
edom son of
Jeduthun, and also Hosah, were to be
gatekeepers.
And with them Heman and
Jeduthun with
trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of
Jeduthun were
porters.
Heman and
Jeduthun had with them
trumpets and cymbals for the music and instruments for the songs of God. And the sons of
Jeduthun were stationed at the
gate.
And the children of
Ammon came out, and put the battle in
array before the
gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
The
Ammonites marched out and
arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance to the city, while the kings who had come stayed by themselves in the open country.
And David prepared iron in abundance for the
nails for the doors of the
gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight;
David provided a large quantity of iron to make the
nails for the doors of the
gateways and for the fittings, together with more bronze than could be
weighed Moreover four thousand were
porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise
therewith.
4,000 are to be gatekeepers, and 4,000 are to praise the LORD with the instruments I have made for giving praise.”
Concerning the divisions of the
porters: Of the Korhites was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of
Asaph.
These were the divisions of the
gatekeepers: From the Korahites: Meshelemiah son of Kore, one of the sons of
Asaph.
Among these were the divisions of the
porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.
These divisions of the gatekeepers, through their chief men, had duties for ministering in the house of the LORD, just as their brothers did.
And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
They cast lots for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.
And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for
Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.
The lot for the East
Gate fell to Shelemiah. Then lots were cast for his son
Zechariah, a wise
counselor, and the lot for the North
Gate fell to him.
To Obed-
edom southward; and to his sons the house of
Asuppim.
The lot for the South
Gate fell to Obed-
edom, and the lot for the storehouses to his sons.
To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the
gate Shallecheth, by the
causeway of the going up, ward against ward.
The lots for the West
Gate and the Shallecheth
Gate on the ascending
highway fell to Shuppim and Hosah. There were guards stationed at every watch.
These are the divisions of the
porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.
These were the divisions of the
gatekeepers who were descendants of
Korah and Merari.
Also he built Beth-horon the upper, and Beth-horon the
nether,
fenced cities, with walls,
gates, and bars;
He rebuilt Upper and Lower Beth-horon as fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars,
And he appointed, according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required: the
porters also by their courses at every
gate: for so had David the man of God commanded.
In keeping with the ordinances of his father David, Solomon appointed the divisions of the priests over their service, and the Levites for their duties to offer praise and to minister before the priests according to the daily requirement. He also appointed gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate, for this had been the command of David, the man of God.
Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers,
gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and
prospered.
So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and
surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and
prospered.
And the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah sat either of them on his throne, clothed in their robes, and they sat in a void place at the entering in of the
gate of Samaria; and all the prophets
prophesied before them.
Dressed in royal
attire, the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the
threshing floor by the entrance of the
gate of Samaria, with all the prophets
prophesying before them.
And a third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.
a third shall be at the royal palace, and a third at the Foundation Gate, while all the others are in the courtyards of the house of the LORD.
So they laid hands on her; and when she was come to the entering of the horse
gate by the king’s house, they
slew her there.
So they seized
Athaliah as she reached the entrance of the Horse
Gate to the palace grounds, and there they put her to death.
And he set the
porters at the
gates of the house of the LORD, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in.
He stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD, so that nothing unclean could enter for any reason.
And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the high gate into the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom.
He also took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace through the Upper
Gate. They seated King
Joash on the royal throne,
And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD.
At the king’s command a chest was made and placed outside, at the gate of the house of the LORD.
And
Joash the king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the
gate of Ephraim to the corner
gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim
Gate to the Corner
Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and fortified them.
Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, the Valley Gate, and the angle in the wall, and he fortified them.
He built the high gate of the house of the LORD, and on the wall of Ophel he built much.
Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD, and he worked extensively on the wall at the hill of Ophel.
And
Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, the priests and Levites for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give
thanks, and to praise in the
gates of the tents of the LORD.
Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests and Levites—each of them according to their duties as priests or Levites—for the burnt offerings and peace offerings, for ministry, for giving
thanks, and for singing praises at the
gates of the LORD’s dwelling.
And Kore the son of Imnah the
Levite, the porter toward the east, was over the
freewill offerings of God, to distribute the oblations of the LORD, and the most holy things.
Kore son of Imnah the
Levite, the keeper of the East
Gate, was in charge of the
freewill offerings given to God, distributing the contributions to the LORD and the consecrated gifts.
And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the
gate of the city, and spake
comfortably to them, saying,
Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the city
gate. Then he encouraged them, saying,
Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish
gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the
fenced cities of Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish
Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were
scribes, and officers, and
porters.
were over the laborers and
supervised all who did the work, task by task. Some of the Levites were
secretaries, officers, and
gatekeepers.
And the singers the sons of
Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and
Asaph, and Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer; and the
porters waited at every
gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
The singers, the descendants of
Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David,
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer. And the
gatekeepers at each
gate did not need to leave their position, because their fellow Levites made preparations for them.
The children of the
porters: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, in all an hundred thirty and nine.
The gatekeepers: the descendants of Shallum, the descendants of Ater, the descendants of Talmon, the descendants of Akkub, the descendants of Hatita, and the descendants of Shobai, 139 in all.
So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of
Artaxerxes the king.
So in the seventh year of King
Artaxerxes, he went up to Jerusalem with some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, singers,
gatekeepers, and temple servants.
Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the
porters; Shallum, and Telem, and
Uri.
From the singers: Eliashib. From the
gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and
Uri.
And they said unto me, The
remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great
affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the
gates thereof are burned with fire.
And they told me, “The
remnant who survived the exile are there in the province, in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its
gates are burned with fire.”
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres, lieth waste, and the
gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its
gates have been destroyed by fire?”
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the
gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the
gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
And I went out by night by the
gate of the valley, even before the
dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the
gates thereof were consumed with fire.
So I went out at night through the Valley
Gate toward the Well of the Serpent and the Dung
Gate, and I
inspected the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down and the
gates that had been destroyed by fire.
Then I went on to the
gate of the fountain, and to the king’s
pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
Then I went on to the Fountain
Gate and the King’s
Pool, but there was no room for the animal under me to get through;
Then went I up in the night by the
brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the
gate of the valley, and so returned.
so I went up the valley by night and
inspected the wall. Then I headed back and reentered through the Valley
Gate.
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep
gate; they
sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they
sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel.
At the Sheep
Gate, Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests began rebuilding. They dedicated it and
installed its doors. After building as far as the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel, they dedicated the wall.
But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.
The Fish
Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars.
Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.
The Jeshanah
Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars.
The valley gate repaired Hanun, and the inhabitants of Zanoah; they built it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof, and a thousand cubits on the wall unto the dung gate.
The Valley
Gate was repaired by Hanun and the residents of Zanoah. They rebuilt it,
installed its doors, bolts, and bars, and repaired a thousand cubits of the wall as far as the Dung
Gate.
But the dung gate repaired Malchiah the son of Rechab, the ruler of part of Beth-haccerem; he build it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.
The Dung
Gate was repaired by Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem. He rebuilt it and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars.
But the
gate of the fountain repaired Shallun the son of
Col-hozeh, the ruler of part of
Mizpah; he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof, and the wall of the
pool of
Siloah by the king’s garden, and unto the stairs that go down from the city of David.
The Fountain
Gate was repaired by Shallun son of
Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of
Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it, and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the
Pool of Shelah near the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that descend from the City of David.
Moreover the
Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, unto the place over against the water
gate toward the east, and the tower that lieth out.
and the temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the tower that juts out.
From above the horse gate repaired the priests, every one over against his house.
Above the Horse Gate, each of the priests made repairs in front of his own house.
After them repaired
Zadok the son of Immer over against his house. After him repaired also Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the east
gate.
Next to them,
Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house, and next to him, Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the guard of the East
Gate, made repairs.
After him repaired Malchiah the
goldsmith’s son unto the place of the
Nethinims, and of the merchants, over against the
gate Miphkad, and to the going up of the corner.
Next to him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the upper room above the corner.
And between the going up of the corner unto the sheep gate repaired the goldsmiths and the merchants.
And between the upper room above the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.
Now it came to pass, when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the
gates;)
When
Sanballat,
Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and not a
gap was left—though to that time I had not yet
installed the doors in the
gates—
Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the
porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
When the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
And I said unto them, Let not the
gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and
appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.
And I told them, “Do not open the
gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot. While the guards are on duty, keep the doors shut and securely fastened. And
appoint the residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their own homes.”
The
porters: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, an hundred thirty and eight.
The gatekeepers: the descendants of Shallum, the descendants of Ater, the descendants of Talmon, the descendants of Akkub, the descendants of Hatita, and the descendants of Shobai, 138 in all.
So the priests, and the Levites, and the
porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the
Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
So the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and temple servants, along with some of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. And by the seventh month the Israelites had settled in their towns.
And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water
gate; and they spake unto
Ezra the
scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.
At that time all the people gathered together in the square before the Water
Gate, and they asked
Ezra the
scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel.
And he read therein before the street that was before the water
gate from the morning until
midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were
attentive unto the book of the law.
So
Ezra read it
aloud from
daybreak until
noon as he faced the square before the Water
Gate, in front of the men and women and those who could understand. And all the people
listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.
And the people went out, brought back branches, and made booths on their own rooftops, in their courtyards, in the court of the house of God, and in the squares by the Water Gate and by the Gate of Ephraim.
And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the
porters, the singers, the
Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
“The rest of the people—the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the people of the land to obey the Law of God—along with their wives and all their sons and daughters who are able to understand,
For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the
porters, and the singers: and we will not
forsake the house of our God.
For the Israelites and the Levites are to bring the contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers stay. Thus we will not neglect the house of our God.”
Moreover the
porters, Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren that kept the
gates, were an hundred seventy and two.
And the gatekeepers: Akkub, Talmon, and their associates, who kept watch at the gates—172 men.
Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah,
Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were
porters keeping the ward at the thresholds of the
gates.
Mattaniah, Bakbukiah,
Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were
gatekeepers who guarded the storerooms at the
gates.
And the priests and the Levites
purified themselves, and
purified the people, and the
gates, and the wall.
After the priests and Levites had
purified themselves, they
purified the people, the
gates, and the wall.
Then I brought up the princes of Judah upon the wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave
thanks,
whereof one went on the right hand upon the wall toward the dung
gate:
Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall, and I appointed two great
thanksgiving choirs. One was to proceed along the top of the wall to the right, toward the Dung
Gate.
And at the fountain gate, which was over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall, above the house of David, even unto the water gate eastward.
At the Fountain
Gate they
climbed the steps of the City of David on the
ascent to the wall and passed above the house of David to the Water
Gate on the east.
And from above the gate of Ephraim, and above the old gate, and above the fish gate, and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Meah, even unto the sheep gate: and they stood still in the prison gate.
over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. And they stopped at the Gate of the Guard.
And both the singers and the
porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the
purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.
They performed the service of their God and the service of
purification, along with the singers and
gatekeepers, as David and his son Solomon had prescribed.
And all Israel in the days of
Zerubbabel, and in the days of
Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the
porters, every day his portion: and they
sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites
sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.
So in the days of
Zerubbabel and
Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the singers and
gatekeepers. They also set aside daily portions for the Levites, and the Levites set aside daily portions for the descendants of Aaron.
And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where
aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the
frankincense, and the vessels, and the
tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the
porters; and the offerings of the priests.
and had prepared for
Tobiah a large room where they had previously stored the grain offerings, the
frankincense, the temple articles, and the
tithes of grain, new wine, and oil prescribed for the Levites, singers, and
gatekeepers, along with the contributions for the priests.
And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.
When the evening shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem, just before the Sabbath, I ordered that the gates be shut and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my servants at the gates so that no load could enter on the Sabbath day.
And I commanded the Levites that they should
cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the
gates, to
sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and
spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.
Then I
instructed the Levites to
purify themselves and guard the
gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me for this as well, O my God, and show me mercy according to Your abundant loving devotion.
And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then
Mordecai sat in the king’s
gate.
When the virgins were assembled a second time,
Mordecai was sitting at the king’s
gate.
In those days, while
Mordecai sat in the king’s
gate, two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were
wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king
Ahasuerus.
And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s
gate, bowed, and reverenced
Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But
Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.
All the royal servants at the king’s
gate bowed down and paid
homage to
Haman, because the king had commanded that this be done for him. But
Mordecai would not bow down or pay
homage.
Then the king’s servants, which were in the king’s
gate, said unto
Mordecai, Why transgressest thou the king’s commandment?
Then the royal servants at the king’s
gate asked
Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the command of the king?”
