Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the
Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were
made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very
wroth,
When
Sanballat and
Tobiah, together with the Arabs,
Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were
furious,
Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.
And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
After I had
made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and
awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
For they all
made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be
weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God,
strengthen my hands.
For they were all trying to
frighten us, saying, “Their hands will be
weakened in the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God,
strengthen my hands.
And
Ezra the
scribe stood upon a
pulpit of wood, which they had
made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
Ezra the
scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for this occasion. At his right side stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, and at his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum,
Hash-baddanah,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great
mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.
Then all the people began to eat and drink, to send out portions, and to
rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that had been
made known to them.
So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.
And the people went out, brought back branches, and made booths on their own rooftops, in their courtyards, in the court of the house of God, and in the squares by the Water Gate and by the Gate of Ephraim.
And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity
made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of
Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great
gladness.
The whole assembly who had returned from exile
made booths and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of
Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated like this. And there was great
rejoicing.
Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens, the highest heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all things, and the host of heaven worships You.
And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and
madest a covenant with him to give the land of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Amorites, and the
Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:
You found his heart faithful before You, and
made a covenant with him to give the land of the
Canaanites and
Hittites, of the
Amorites and
Perizzites, of the Jebusites and Girgashites— to give it to his descendants. You have kept Your promise, because You are righteous.
And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So
didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.
You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew they had acted with
arrogance against our fathers. You
made a name for
Yourself that endures to this day.
And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:
You revealed to them Your holy Sabbath and gave them commandments and statutes and laws through Your servant Moses.
Yea, when they had
made them a
molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;
Even when they cast for themselves an image of a
calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and when they committed terrible blasphemies,
Also we
made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a
shekel for the service of the house of our God;
We also place ourselves under the obligation to
contribute a third of a
shekel yearly for the service of the house of our God:
Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and
rejoiced: for God had
made them
rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children
rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even
afar off.
On that day they offered great sacrifices,
rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also
rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard from
afar.
And I
made treasurers over the
treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and
Zadok the
scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.
I appointed as treasurers over the storerooms Shelemiah the priest,
Zadok the
scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, with Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, to assist them, because they were considered
trustworthy. They were responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.
And I
contended with them, and
cursed them, and
smote certain of them, and
plucked off their hair, and
made them
swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for
yourselves.
I
rebuked them and called down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I
made them take an oath before God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or for
yourselves!
Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God
made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did
outlandish women cause to sin.
Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations, and he was loved by his God, who made him king over all Israel—yet foreign women drew him into sin.
In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:
In the third year of his reign,
Xerxes held a feast for all his officials and servants. The military leaders of Persia and Media were there, along with the nobles and princes of the provinces.
And when these days were
expired, the king
made a feast unto all the people that were present in
Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;
At the end of this time, in the garden court of the royal palace, the king held a seven-day feast for all the people in the citadel of
Susa, from the least to the greatest.
Also Vashti the queen
made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king
Ahasuerus.
Queen Vashti also gave a
banquet for the women in the royal palace of King
Xerxes.
Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:
Then the king’s attendants proposed, “Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king,
And the king loved
Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and
made her queen instead of Vashti.
And the king loved
Esther more than all the other women, and she found grace and favor in his sight more than all of the other virgins. So he placed the royal crown upon her head and
made her queen in place of Vashti.
Then the king
made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even
Esther’s feast; and he
made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
Then the king held a great
banquet,
Esther’s
banquet, for all his officials and servants. He proclaimed a tax
holiday in the provinces and gave gifts worthy of the king’s
bounty.
And when
inquisition was
made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both
hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
After the report had been investigated and
verified, both officials were
hanged on the
gallows. And all this was recorded in the Book of the Chronicles in the presence of the king.
His wife Zeresh and all his friends told him, “Have them build a
gallows fifty cubits high, and ask the king in the morning to have
Mordecai hanged on it. Then go to the
banquet with the king and enjoy
yourself.” The advice pleased
Haman, and he had the
gallows constructed.
And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the
gallows fifty cubits high, which
Haman had
made for
Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of
Haman. Then the king said,
Hang him
thereon.
Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said: “There is a
gallows fifty cubits high at
Haman’s house. He had it built for
Mordecai, who gave the report that saved the king.” “
Hang him on it!” declared the king.
This was done on the
thirteenth day of the month of
Adar, and on the
fourteenth day they rested, making it a day of feasting and joy.
The Jews in
Susa, however, had assembled on the
thirteenth and the
fourteenth days of the month. So they rested on the
fifteenth day, making it a day of feasting and joy.
Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns,
made the
fourteenth day of the month
Adar a day of
gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.
This is why the rural Jews, who live in the villages, observe the
fourteenth day of the month of
Adar as a day of joy and feasting. It is a
holiday for sending gifts to one another.
Hast not thou
made an
hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Have You not placed a
hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans
made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had
made an appointment together to come to
mourn with him and to comfort him.
Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite,
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this
adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and
sympathize with Job and comfort him.
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
Is my strength like that of stone, or my flesh made of bronze?
So am I
made to possess months of vanity, and
wearisome nights are appointed to me.
I have
sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
If I have
sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You
made me Your
target, so that I am a burden to You?
Thine hands have
made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou
dost destroy me.
Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me?
Remember, I
beseech thee, that thou hast
made me as the clay; and
wilt thou bring me into dust again?
Please remember that You
molded me like clay. Would You now return me to dust?
Art thou the first man that was born? or
wast thou
made before the hills?
Were you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?
But now he hath
made me
weary: thou hast
made desolate all my company.
Surely He has now exhausted me; You have
devastated all my family.
He has
made me a
byword among the people, a man in whose face they
spit.
If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.
If I look for
Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in darkness,
For God maketh my heart soft, and the
Almighty troubleth me:
No mention shall be
made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above
rubies.
Coral and quartz are unworthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond
rubies.
when He set a limit for the rain and a path for the
thunderbolt,
The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
The dying man blessed me, and I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.
I
made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a
maid?
“I have
made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I
gaze with desire at a virgin?
Did not he that
made me in the
womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the
womb?
Did not He who
made me in the
womb also make them? Did not the same One form us in the
womb?
If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
If I have put my trust in gold or called pure gold my security,
The Spirit of God hath
made me, and the breath of the
Almighty hath given me life.
The Spirit of God has
made me, and the breath of the
Almighty gives me life.
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I
made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its
blanket,
Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
I made the wilderness his home and the salt flats his dwelling.
Behold now
behemoth, which I
made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.
Look at
Behemoth, which I
made along with you. He feeds on grass like an ox.
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him.
Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
Nothing on earth is his equal— a creature devoid of fear!
If he turn not, he will
whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and
made it ready.
He
made a pit, and
digged it, and is fallen into the
ditch which he
made.
He has
dug a hole and hollowed it out; he has fallen into a pit of his own making.
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
You made him ruler of the works of Your hands; You have placed everything under his feet:
The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they
made: in the net which they
hid is their own foot taken.
The nations have fallen into a pit of their making; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure.
Thou
wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is
fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for
evermore.
You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.
The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
He
made darkness his secret place; his
pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the
skies.
He
made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a
canopy around Him.
Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath
holden me up, and thy gentleness hath
made me great.
You have given me Your shield of salvation; Your right hand upholds me, and Your gentleness exalts me.
Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that
hate me.
You have
made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who
hated me.
Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
You have delivered me from the
strife of the people; You have
made me the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me.
For thou hast
made him most blessed for ever: thou hast
made him exceeding
glad with thy countenance.
For You grant him blessings
forever; You
cheer him with joy in Your presence.
But thou art he that took me out of the
womb: thou
didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
Yet You brought me forth from the
womb; You
made me secure at my mother’s breast.
I will
extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not
made my foes to
rejoice over me.
I will
exalt You, O LORD, for You have lifted me up and have not allowed my foes to
rejoice over me.
LORD, by thy favour thou hast
made my mountain to stand strong: thou
didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.
O LORD, You favored me; You
made my mountain stand strong. When You
hid Your face, I was dismayed.
To You, O LORD, I called, and I
begged my Lord for mercy:
By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the stars by the breath of His mouth.
Behold, thou hast
made my days as an
handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee:
verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.
Selah.
You, indeed, have
made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath.
Selah He brought me up also out of an
horrible pit, out of the
miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
He lifted me up from the pit of
despair, out of the
miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and
made my footsteps firm.
Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Blessed is the man who has
made the LORD his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who
lapse into
falsehood.
Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which
hate us
spoil for themselves.
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a
scorn and a
derision to them that are round about us.
You have
made us a reproach to our neighbors, a
mockery and
derision to those around us.
Thou makest us a
byword among the heathen, a
shaking of the head among the people.
My heart is
inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have
made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
My heart is
stirred by a noble
theme as I
recite my verses to the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
All thy garments smell of
myrrh, and
aloes, and
cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have
made thee
glad.
Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
Come, see the works of the LORD, who brings
devastation upon the earth.
