And in the eighth day they
made a solemn assembly: for they kept the
dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.
On the eighth day they held a solemn assembly, for the
dedication of the altar had lasted seven days, and the feast seven days more.
Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears
attent unto the prayer that is
made in this place.
Now My eyes will be open and My ears
attentive to the prayers offered in this place.
Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be king for the LORD thy God: because thy God loved Israel, to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king over them, to do judgment and justice.
Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you to set you on His throne to be king for the LORD your God. Because your God loved Israel enough to establish them
forever, He has
made you king over them to carry out justice and righteousness.”
And the king
made of the
algum trees terraces to the house of the LORD, and to the king’s palace, and harps and
psalteries for singers: and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah.
The king
made the
algum wood into steps for the house of the LORD and for the king’s palace, and into lyres and harps for the singers. Never before had anything like them been seen in the land of Judah.)
And king Solomon
made two hundred targets of beaten gold: six hundred shekels of beaten gold went to one
target.
King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels of hammered gold went into each shield.
And three hundred shields
made he of beaten gold: three hundred shekels of gold went to one shield. And the king put them in the house of the forest of
Lebanon.
He also
made three hundred small shields of hammered gold; three hundred shekels of gold went into each shield. And the king put them in the House of the Forest of
Lebanon.
Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold.
Additionally, the king made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with pure gold.
And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps. There was not the like made in any kingdom.
Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like this had ever been made for any kingdom.
And the king
made silver in Jerusalem as stones, and
cedar trees
made he as the sycomore trees that are in the low plains in abundance.
The king
made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and
cedar as abundant as
sycamore in the foothills.
Thy father
made our yoke
grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the
grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
“Your father put a heavy yoke on us. But now you should
lighten the burden of your father’s service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father
made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s
waist!
And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father
made your yoke heavy, but I will add
thereto: my father
chastised you with whips, but I will
chastise you with scorpions.
and spoke to them as the young men had
advised, saying, “Whereas my father
made your yoke heavy, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father
scourged you with whips, I will
scourge you with scorpions.”
Then king
Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king
Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his
chariot, to
flee to Jerusalem.
Then King
Rehoboam sent out Hadoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. And King
Rehoboam mounted his
chariot in
haste and escaped to Jerusalem.
And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.
He also put shields and spears in all the cities and strengthened them greatly. So Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.
And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the
calves which he had
made.
And
Jeroboam appointed his own priests for the high places and for the goat demons and
calf idols he had
made.
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and
made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported
Rehoboam son of Solomon for three years, because they walked for three years in the way of David and Solomon.
And
Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king.
Rehoboam appointed
Abijah son of
Maacah as chief prince among his brothers, intending to make him king.
So
Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had
made.
So King
Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem and seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had
made.
Instead of which king
Rehoboam made shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the chief of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king’s house.
Then King
Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.
And now ye think to
withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden
calves, which
Jeroboam made you for gods.
And now you think you can resist the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army, and you have with you the golden
calves that
Jeroboam made for you as gods.
Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have
made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that
whosoever cometh to
consecrate himself with a young
bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.
But did you not drive out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites? And did you not make priests for
yourselves as do the peoples of other lands? Now
whoever comes to
consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams can become a priest of things that are not gods.
And he built
fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
Because the land was at peace,
Asa built fortified cities in Judah. In those days no one
made war with him, because the LORD had given him rest.
And also concerning Maachah the mother of
Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had
made an
idol in a
grove: and
Asa cut down her
idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the
brook Kidron.
And they buried him in his own
sepulchres, which he had
made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and
divers kinds of spices prepared by the
apothecaries’ art: and they
made a very great burning for him.
And he was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a
bier that was full of spices and various
blended perfumes; then they
made a great fire in his honor.
And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they
made no war against
Jehoshaphat.
And the
dread of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that surrounded Judah, so that they did not make war against
Jehoshaphat.
And
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah had
made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith the LORD, With these thou shalt
push Syria until they be consumed.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had
made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘With these you shall
gore the Arameans until they are finished off.’”
For the children of
Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount
Seir, utterly to
slay and destroy them: and when they had
made an end of the inhabitants of
Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
The
Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the inhabitants of Mount
Seir,
devoting them to destruction. And when they had
made an end to the inhabitants of
Seir, they helped to destroy one another.
Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and
Jehoshaphat in the
forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had
made them to
rejoice over their enemies.
Then all the men of Judah and Jerusalem, with
Jehoshaphat at their head, returned
joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had
made them
rejoice over their enemies.
And after this did
Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with
Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
Later,
Jehoshaphat king of Judah
made an alliance with
Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly.
And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to
Tarshish: and they
made the ships in Ezion-gaber.
They agreed to make ships to go to
Tarshish, and these were built in Ezion-
geber.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had
made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had
made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.
In the days of Jehoram,
Edom rebelled against the hand of Judah and appointed their own king.
Moreover he
made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit
fornication, and compelled Judah
thereto.
Jehoram had also built high places on the hills of Judah; he had caused the people of Jerusalem to
prostitute themselves and had led Judah
astray.
But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast
made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a
whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of
Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, which were better than
thyself:
but you have walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and have caused Judah and the people of Jerusalem to
prostitute themselves, just as the house of
Ahab prostituted itself. You have also killed your brothers, your father’s family, who were better than you.
And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his
bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And his people
made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem
made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his
stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So
Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.
Then the people of Jerusalem
made Ahaziah, the youngest son of Jehoram, king in his place, since the raiders who had come into the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons. So
Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.
And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds,
Azariah the son of Jeroham, and
Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and
Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him.
Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself and
made a covenant with the commanders of hundreds—with
Azariah son of Jeroham,
Ishmael son of Jehohanan,
Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri.
And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the LORD hath said of the sons of David.
the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. “Behold, the king’s son!” said Jehoiada. “He must reign, just as the LORD promised concerning the descendants of David.
Then they brought out the king’s son, and put upon him the crown, and gave him the testimony, and
made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons
anointed him, and said, God save the king.
Then Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They
anointed him and
shouted, “Long live the king!”
And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD’S people.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people.
And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD.
At the king’s command a chest was made and placed outside, at the gate of the house of the LORD.
And they
made a
proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.
And a
proclamation was issued in Judah and Jerusalem that they were to bring to the LORD the tax imposed by Moses the servant of God on Israel in the wilderness.
And all the princes and all the people
rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had
made an end.
All the officers and all the people
rejoiced and brought their contributions, and they dropped them in the chest until it was full.
And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada,
whereof were
made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer
withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.
When they were finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada to make with it the articles for the house of the LORD—utensils for the service and for the burnt offerings, dishes, and other objects of gold and silver. Throughout the days of Jehoiada, burnt offerings were presented regularly in the house of the LORD.
Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and
made obeisance to the king. Then the king
hearkened unto them.
After the death of Jehoiada, however, the officials of Judah came and paid
homage to the king, and he
listened to them.
Moreover
Amaziah gathered Judah together, and
made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle
spear and shield.
Then
Amaziah gathered the people of Judah and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. And he numbered those twenty years of age or older throughout Judah and Benjamin and found 300,000 chosen men able to serve in the army, bearing the
spear and shield.
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou
made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we
made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
Now after the time that
Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they
made a
conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to
Lachish: but they sent to
Lachish after him, and
slew him there.
From the time that
Amaziah turned from following the LORD, a
conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to
Lachish. But men were sent after him to
Lachish, and they killed him there.
Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and
made him king in the room of his father
Amaziah.
All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and
made him king in place of his father
Amaziah.
And he sought God in the days of
Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God
made him to
prosper.
He sought God throughout the days of
Zechariah, who
instructed him in the fear of God. And as long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success.
And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
Under their authority was an army of 307,500 trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.
And he
made in Jerusalem engines, invented by
cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones
withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.
And in Jerusalem he
made skillfully designed devices to shoot arrows and
catapult large stones from the towers and corners. So his fame spread far and wide, for he was helped
tremendously so that he became powerful.
For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and
made also
molten images for
Baalim.
Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even made cast images of the Baals.
For the LORD brought Judah low because of
Ahaz king of Israel; for he
made Judah naked, and
transgressed sore against the LORD.
For the LORD humbled Judah because
Ahaz king of Israel had thrown off restraint in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
And
Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he
made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.
Then
Ahaz gathered up the articles of the house of God, cut them into pieces, shut the doors of the house of the LORD, and set up altars of his own on every street corner in Jerusalem.
And in every several city of Judah he
made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and
provoked to anger the LORD God of his fathers.
In every city of Judah he built high places to offer incense to other gods, and so he
provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers.
Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to
astonishment, and to
hissing, as ye see with your eyes.
Therefore, the wrath of the LORD has fallen upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has
made them an object of terror,
horror, and
mockery, as you can see with your own eyes.
Now they began on the first day of the first month to
sanctify, and on the eighth day of the month came they to the
porch of the LORD: so they
sanctified the house of the LORD in eight days; and in the
sixteenth day of the first month they
made an end.
They began the
consecration on the first day of the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they reached the
portico of the LORD. For eight more days they consecrated the house of the LORD itself, finishing on the
sixteenth day of the first month.
And the priests killed them, and they
made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an
atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be
made for all Israel.
And the priests slaughtered the goats and put their blood on the altar for a sin offering, to make
atonement for all Israel, because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.
And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped.
When the offerings were completed, the king and all those present with him bowed down and worshiped.
And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which
trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to
desolation, as ye see.
Do not be like your fathers and brothers who were unfaithful to the LORD, the God of their fathers, so that He
made them an object of
horror, as you can see.
Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired
Millo in the city of David, and
made darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and
reinforced the supporting terraces of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
And
Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he
made himself
treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;
Hezekiah had very great riches and honor, and he
made treasuries for his silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and all kinds of valuable articles.
Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and
cotes for flocks.
He also
made storehouses for the harvest of grain and new wine and oil, stalls for all kinds of
livestock, and pens for the flocks.
Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.
He made cities for himself, and he acquired herds of sheep and cattle in abundance, for God gave him very great wealth.
For he built again the high places which
Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for
Baalim, and
made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
For he rebuilt the high places that his father
Hezekiah had
torn down, and he raised up altars for the Baals and
made Asherah poles. And he worshiped and served all the host of heaven.
And he set a carved image, the
idol which he had
made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:
Manasseh even took the carved image he had
made and set it up in the house of God, of which God had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name
forever.
So
Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to
err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.
So
Manasseh led the people of Judah and Jerusalem
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did
Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which
Manasseh his father had
made, and served them;
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father
Manasseh had done. Amon served and sacrificed to all the idols that his father
Manasseh had
made,
But the people of the land
slew all them that had
conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land
made Josiah his son king in his
stead.
But the people of the land killed all those who had
conspired against King Amon, and they
made his son
Josiah king in his place.
And they
brake down the altars of
Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images, he
brake in pieces, and
made dust of them, and
strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.
Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were
torn down, and he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them. He
shattered the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images,
crushed them to dust, and scattered them over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.
And the king stood in his place, and
made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his
testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.
So the king stood by the
pillar and
made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book.
And
Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that
pertained to the children of Israel, and
made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And
Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required
everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And afterward they
made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were
busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.
Afterward, they
made preparations for themselves and for the priests, since the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were offering up burnt offerings and fat until
nightfall. So the Levites
made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
And the singers the sons of
Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and
Asaph, and Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer; and the
porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
The singers, the descendants of
Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David,
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer. And the gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their position, because their fellow Levites
made preparations for them.
Then Jeremiah
lamented over
Josiah, and to this day all the choirs of men and women sing laments over
Josiah. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Book of Laments.
Then the people of the land took
Jehoahaz the son of
Josiah, and
made him king in his father’s
stead in Jerusalem.
Then the people of the land took
Jehoahaz son of
Josiah and
made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.
And the king of Egypt
made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to
Jehoiakim. And
Necho took
Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.
Then Neco king of Egypt
made Eliakim brother of
Jehoahaz king over Judah and Jerusalem, and he changed Eliakim’s name to
Jehoiakim. But Neco took Eliakim’s brother
Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt.
And when the year was
expired, king
Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and
made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.
In the spring, King
Nebuchadnezzar summoned
Jehoiachin and brought him to Babylon, along with the articles of value from the house of the LORD. And he
made Jehoiachin’s relative
Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD
stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he
made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to
fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD
stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a
proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD
stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he
made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to
fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD
stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a
proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
That search may be
made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a
rebellious city, and
hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved
sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
that a search should be
made of the record books of your fathers. In these books you will discover and
verify that the city is a
rebellious city,
harmful to kings and provinces,
inciting sedition from ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.
And I commanded, and search hath been
made, and it is found that this city of old time hath
made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and
sedition have been
made therein.
I issued a decree, and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has revolted against kings from ancient times,
engaging in rebellion and
sedition.
Now when the copy of king
Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the
scribe, and their companions, they went up in
haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and
made them to cease by force and power.
When the text of the letter from King
Artaxerxes was read to Rehum, Shimshai the
scribe, and their associates, they went immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and
forcibly stopped them.
But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.
In his first year, however, Cyrus king of Babylon issued a decree to rebuild this house of God.
And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had
made governor;
He also removed from the temple of Babylon the gold and silver articles belonging to the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar had taken and carried there from the temple in Jerusalem. King Cyrus gave these articles to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he appointed governor
Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search
made in the king’s
treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was
made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
Now, therefore, if it pleases the king, let a search be
made of the royal
archives in Babylon to see if King Cyrus did indeed issue a decree to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.
Then
Darius the king
made a decree, and search was
made in the house of the rolls, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon.
Thus King
Darius ordered a search of the
archives stored in the treasury of Babylon.
In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king
made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, Let the house be builded, the place where they offered sacrifices, and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid; the height thereof
threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof
threescore cubits;
In the first year of King Cyrus, he issued a decree concerning the house of God in Jerusalem: Let the house be rebuilt as a place for offering sacrifices, and let its foundations be firmly laid. It is to be sixty cubits high and sixty cubits wide,
Also I have
made a decree, that
whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be
hanged thereon; and let his house be
made a
dunghill for this.
I also decree that if any man interferes with this directive, a beam is to be
torn from his house and raised up, and he is to be impaled on it. And his own house shall be
made a pile of
rubble for this
offense.
And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I
Darius have
made a decree; let it be done with speed.
May God, who has caused His Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to alter this decree or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I,
Darius, have issued the decree. Let it be carried out with
diligence.
And kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had
made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to
strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
For seven days they kept the Feast of
Unleavened Bread with joy, because the LORD had
made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them to
strengthen their hands in the work on the house of the God of Israel.
Now when
Ezra had prayed, and when he had
confessed,
weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people
wept very
sore.
While
Ezra prayed and
made this confession,
weeping and falling facedown before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites—men, women, and children—gathered around him, and the people
wept bitterly as well.
Then arose
Ezra, and
made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to
swear that they should do according to this word. And they
sware.
So
Ezra got up and
made the leading priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do what had been said. And they took the oath.
And they
made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;
And a

And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.

made repairs. Next to him, Meshullam son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel,
made repairs; and next to him,

made repairs as well.
And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord.
Next to him, the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles did not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.
And next unto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of
Gibeon, and of
Mizpah, unto the throne of the governor on this side the river.
Next to them, repairs were
made by Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, and the men of
Gibeon and
Mizpah, who were under the authority of the governor of the region west of the Euphrates.
