And said, Naked came I out of my
mother’s
womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
saying: “Naked I came from my
mother’s
womb, and naked I will return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
Because it shut not up the doors of my
mother’s
womb, nor
hid sorrow from mine eyes.
For that night did not shut the doors of the
womb to hide the sorrow from my eyes.
I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister.
and say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’
(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my
mother’s
womb;)
though from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my
mother’s
womb I guided the widow—
But thou art he that took me out of the
womb: thou
didst make me hope when I was upon my
mother’s breasts.
Yet You brought me forth from the
womb; You made me secure at my
mother’s breast.
I was cast upon thee from the
womb: thou art my God from my
mother’s
belly.
From birth I was cast upon You; from my
mother’s
womb You have been my God.
When my father and my
mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
Though my father and
mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.
I
behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down
heavily, as one that mourneth for his
mother.
I
paced about as for my friend or brother; I was bowed down with grief, like one
mourning for his
mother.
Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother’s son.
You sit and
malign your brother; you
slander your own
mother’s son.
Behold, I was
shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my
mother conceive me.
Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.
I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an
alien unto my
mother’s children.
I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons,
By thee have I been
holden up from the
womb: thou art he that took me out of my
mother’s
bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.
I have
leaned on You since birth; You pulled me from my
mother’s
womb. My praise is always for You.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his
mother be
blotted out.
May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and the sin of his
mother never be
blotted out.
He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.
He settles the barren woman in her home as a joyful
mother to her children.
Hallelujah!
Surely I have
behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is
weaned of his
mother: my soul is even as a
weaned child.
Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a
weaned child with his
mother, like a
weaned child is my soul within me.
For thou hast possessed my
reins: thou hast covered me in my
mother’s
womb.
For You formed my inmost being; You
knit me together in my
mother’s
womb.
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and
forsake not the law of thy
mother:
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not
forsake the teaching of your
mother.
For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
When I was a son to my father, tender and the only child of my mother,
My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and
forsake not the law of thy
mother:
My son, keep your father’s commandment, and do not
forsake your
mother’s teaching.
The
proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a
foolish son grief to his
mother.
A wise son maketh a
glad father: but a
foolish man despiseth his
mother.
A wise son brings joy to his father, but a
foolish man despises his
mother.
He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.
He who assaults his father or evicts his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace.
Whoso curseth his father or his
mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not
despise your
mother when she is old.
Thy father and thy
mother shall be
glad, and she that bare thee shall
rejoice.
May your father and
mother be
glad, and may she who gave you birth
rejoice!
Whoso robbeth his father or his
mother, and saith, It is no
transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.
He who robs his father or mother, saying, “It is not wrong,” is a companion to the man who destroys.
The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
There is a generation that curseth their father, and
doth not
bless their
mother.
There is a generation of those who
curse their fathers and do not
bless their
mothers.
The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his
mother, the ravens of the valley shall
pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
As for the eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience to a
mother, may the ravens of the valley
pluck it out and young vultures
devour it.
The words of king
Lemuel, the prophecy that his
mother taught him.
These are the words of King
Lemuel—the burden that his
mother taught him:
As he came forth of his
mother’s
womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.
As a man came from his
mother’s
womb, so he will depart again, naked as he arrived. He takes nothing for his labor to carry in his hands.
As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the
womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a
mother’s
womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my
mother’s children were
angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own
vineyard have I not kept.
Do not
stare because I am dark, for the sun has
gazed upon me. My
mother’s sons were
angry with me; they made me a keeper of the vineyards, but my own
vineyard I have neglected.
It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
I had just passed them when I found the one I love. I held him and would not let go until I had brought him to my mother’s house, to the chamber of the one who conceived me.
Go forth, O ye daughters of
Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown
wherewith his
mother crowned him in the day of his
espousals, and in the day of the
gladness of his heart.
Come out, O daughters of
Zion, and
gaze at King Solomon, wearing the crown his
mother bestowed on the day of his
wedding— the day of his heart’s
rejoicing.
My
dove, my
undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her
mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her;
yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
but my
dove, my perfect one, is unique, the
favorite of the
mother who bore her. The maidens see her and call her blessed; the queens and concubines sing her praises.
O that thou
wert as my brother, that
sucked the breasts of my
mother! when I should find thee without, I would
kiss thee;
yea, I should not be
despised.
O that you were to me like a brother who
nursed at my
mother’s breasts! If I found you outdoors, I would
kiss you, and no one would
despise me.
I would lead thee, and bring thee into my
mother’s house, who would
instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of
spiced wine of the juice of my
pomegranate.
I would lead you and bring you to the house of my
mother who taught me. I would give you
spiced wine to drink, the
nectar of my pomegranates.
Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness,
leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy
mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.
Who is this coming up from the wilderness,
leaning on her beloved? I
roused you under the apple tree; there your
mother conceived you; there she
travailed and brought you forth.
For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my
mother, the riches of Damascus and the
spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
For before the boy knows how to cry ‘Father’ or ‘
Mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the
plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”
Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?
Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What have you
begotten?’ or to his
mother, ‘What have you brought forth?’”
Listen, O isles, unto me; and
hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the
womb; from the
bowels of my
mother hath he made mention of my name.
Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples: The LORD called Me from the
womb; from the body of My
mother He named Me.
And kings shall be thy
nursing fathers, and their queens thy
nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and
lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be
ashamed that wait for me.
Kings will be your
foster fathers, and their queens your
nursing mothers. They will bow to you facedown and
lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who hope in Me will never be put to shame.”
Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your
mother’s
divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your
iniquities have ye sold
yourselves, and for your transgressions is your
mother put away.
This is what the LORD says: “Where is your
mother’s
certificate of
divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your
iniquities, and for your transgressions your
mother was sent away.
As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
As a
mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you, and you will be
consoled over Jerusalem.”
