And should not I
spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than
sixscore thousand persons that cannot
discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
So should I not care about the great city of
Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well?”
The burden of
Nineveh. The book of the vision of
Nahum the Elkoshite.
This is the burden against
Nineveh, the book of the vision of
Nahum the Elkoshite:
But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
But with an
overwhelming flood He will make an end of
Nineveh and pursue His enemies into darkness.
There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.
And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the
graven image and the
molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art
vile.
The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O
Nineveh: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off the carved image and cast
idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”
He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the
munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong,
fortify thy power
mightily.
But
Nineveh is of old like a
pool of water: yet they shall
flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.
Nineveh has been like a
pool of water throughout her days, but now it is
draining away. “Stop! Stop!” they cry, but no one turns back.
And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall
flee from thee, and say,
Nineveh is laid waste: who will
bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?
And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make
Nineveh a
desolation, and dry like a wilderness.
And He will stretch out His hand against the north and destroy Assyria; He will make
Nineveh a
desolation, as dry as a desert.
In the four and
twentieth day of the
ninth month, in the second year of
Darius, came the word of the LORD by
Haggai the prophet, saying,
On the twenty-fourth day of the
ninth month, in the second year of
Darius, the word of the LORD came to
Haggai the prophet, saying,
Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and
twentieth day of the
ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid, consider it.
Consider carefully from this day forward—from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid—consider carefully:
And it came to pass in the fourth year of king
Darius, that the word of the LORD came unto
Zechariah in the fourth day of the
ninth month, even in
Chisleu;
In the fourth year of King
Darius, the word of the LORD came to
Zechariah on the fourth day of the
ninth month, the month of Chislev.
The men of
Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall
condemn it: because they
repented at the preaching of
Jonas; and, behold, a greater than
Jonas is here.
The men of
Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and
condemn it; for they
repented at the preaching of
Jonah, and now One greater than
Jonah is here.
How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone
astray,
doth he not leave the
ninety and
nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone
astray?
What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes
astray, will he not leave the
ninety-
nine on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost?
And if so be that he find it,
verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the
ninety and
nine which went not
astray.
And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices more over that one sheep than over the
ninety-
nine that did not go
astray.
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
So they went. He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing.
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
And about the
ninth hour Jesus
cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eli,
Eli,
lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?
About the
ninth hour Jesus
cried out in a loud voice, “
Eli,
Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You
forsaken Me?”
And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
And at the
ninth hour Jesus
cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eloi,
Eloi,
lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?
At the
ninth hour, Jesus
cried out in a loud voice, “
Eloi,
Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You
forsaken Me?”

Jonas was a sign unto the
Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
For as
Jonah was a sign to the
Ninevites, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation.
The men of
Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall
condemn it: for they
repented at the preaching of
Jonas; and, behold, a greater than
Jonas is here.
The men of
Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and
condemn it; for they
repented at the preaching of
Jonah, and now One greater than
Jonah is here.
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them,
doth not leave the
ninety and
nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the
ninety-
nine in the pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?
I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one
sinner that repenteth, more than over
ninety and
nine just persons, which need no
repentance.
In the same way, I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over one
sinner who repents than over
ninety-
nine righteous ones who do not need to
repent.
And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten
cleansed? but where are the
nine?
“Were not all ten
cleansed?” Jesus asked. “Where then are the other
nine?

afternoon Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the
ninth hour.
He saw in a vision evidently about the
ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him,
Cornelius.
One day at about the
ninth hour, he had a clear vision of an angel of God who came to him and said, “
Cornelius!”
And
Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the
ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
Cornelius answered: “Four days ago I was in my house praying at this, the
ninth hour. Suddenly a man in
radiant clothing stood before me
And this was the number of them; A thousand golden cups, and a thousand of silver, censers of silver twenty nine, vials of gold thirty, and of silver two thousand four hundred and ten, and a thousand other vessels.
So all the vessels of gold and of silver, which were carried away, were five thousand four hundred
threescore and
nine.
The sons of
Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four: the sons of Zathul,
nine hundred forty and five: the sons of
Corbe, seven hundred and five: the sons of Bani, six hundred forty and eight:
The sons of Aterezias,
ninety and two: the sons of Ceilan and Azetas
threescore and seven: the sons of Azuran, four hundred thirty and two:
The priests: the sons of Jeddu, the son of Jesus among the sons of Sanasib, nine hundred seventy and two: the sons of Meruth, a thousand fifty and two:
The
porters: the sons of Salum, the sons of Jatal, the sons of Talmon, the sons of Dacobi, the sons of Teta, the sons of Sami, in all an hundred thirty and
nine.
And in three days were all they of the tribe of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem the

So he answered me, and said, Go thy way to a woman with child, and ask of her when she hath fulfilled her
nine months, if her
womb may keep the birth any longer within her.
For when the body is fashioned now in the mother’s
womb, and thou givest it members, thy creature is preserved in fire and water, and
nine months
doth thy
workmanship endure thy creature which is created in her.
As when a woman with child in the
ninth month bringeth forth her son, with two or three hours of her birth great pains compass her
womb, which pains, when the child cometh forth, they
slack not a moment:
I
Tobit have walked all the days of my life in the ways of truth and justice, and I did many almsdeeds to my brethren, and my nation, who came with me to
Nineve, into the land of the Assyrians.
And when we were carried away
captives to
Nineve, all my brethren and those that were of my kindred did eat of the bread of the Gentiles.
And my clothes to the naked: and if I saw any of my nation dead, or cast about the walls of Nineve, I buried him.
And when one of the
Ninevites went and
complained of me to the king, that I buried them, and
hid myself; understanding that I was sought for to be put to death, I withdrew myself for fear.
And Achiacharus intreating for me, I returned to
Nineve. Now Achiacharus was
cupbearer, and keeper of the
signet, and
steward, and
overseer of the accounts: and Sarchedonus appointed him next unto him: and he was my brother’s son.
And Raguel asked them, From whence are ye, brethren? To whom they said, We are of the sons of Nephthalim, which are
captives in
Nineve.
After these things Tobias went his way, praising God that he had given him a prosperous journey, and blessed Raguel and Edna his wife, and went on his way till they drew near unto Nineve.
Then
Tobit went out to meet his daughter in law at the gate of
Nineve,
rejoicing and praising God: and they which saw him go
marvelled, because he had received his sight.
But Tobias gave
thanks before them, because God had mercy on him. And when he came near to Sara his daughter in law, he blessed her, saying, Thou art
welcome, daughter: God be blessed, which hath brought thee unto us, and blessed be thy father and thy mother. And there was joy among all his brethren which were at
Nineve.
Go into Media my son, for I surely believe those things which
Jonas the prophet spake of
Nineve, that it shall be overthrown; and that for a time peace shall rather be in Media; and that our brethren shall lie scattered in the earth from that good land: and Jerusalem shall be
desolate, and the house of God in it shall be burned, and shall be
desolate for a time;
And now, my son, depart out of
Nineve, because that those things which the prophet
Jonas spake shall surely come to pass.
And
bury me decently, and thy mother with me; but
tarry no longer at
Nineve. Remember, my son, how Aman handled Achiacharus that brought him up, how out of light he brought him into darkness, and how he rewarded him again: yet Achiacharus was saved, but the other had his reward: for he went down into darkness. Manasses gave
alms, and escaped the snares of death which they had set for him: but Aman fell into the
snare, and perished.
But before he died he heard of the destruction of
Nineve, which was taken by Nabuchodonosor and Assuerus: and before his death he
rejoiced over
Nineve.

So he returned afterward to
Nineve, both he and all his company of
sundry nations being a very great multitude of men of war, and there he took his ease, and
banqueted, both he and his army, an hundred and twenty days.
And they went forth of
Nineve three days’ journey toward the plain of Bectileth, and pitched from Bectileth near the mountain which is at the left hand of the upper
Cilicia.
There be nine things which I have judged in mine heart to be happy, and the tenth I will utter with my tongue: A man that hath joy of his children; and he that liveth to see the fall of his enemy:
So that the flame streamed forth above the furnace forty and nine cubits.
Now on the five and
twentieth day of the
ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up
betimes in the morning,

Antiochus died there in the hundred forty and
ninth year.
What time as
Demetrius reigned, in the hundred
threescore and
ninth year, we the Jews wrote unto you in the extremity of trouble that came upon us in those years, from the time that
Jason and his company revolted from the holy land and kingdom,
But
Judas Maccabeus with
nine others, or
thereabout, withdrew himself into the wilderness, and lived in the mountains after the manner of beasts, with his company, who fed on herbs continually, lest they should be partakers of the
pollution.
But she bowing herself toward him,
laughing the cruel
tyrant to
scorn, spake in her country language on this manner; O my son, have
pity upon me that bare thee
nine months in my
womb, and gave thee such three years, and
nourished thee, and brought thee up unto this age, and
endured the troubles of education.
And by the help of the
Almighty they
slew above
nine thousand of their enemies, and wounded and
maimed the most part of Nicanor’s host, and so put all to flight;
And because certain, who were no less than
nine thousand, were fled together into two very strong castles, having all manner of things convenient to
sustain the siege,
Now when they were gone from thence
nine furlongs in their journey toward
Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred
horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.
In the hundred forty and
ninth year it was told
Judas, that
Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into
Judea,
