And John answered and said, Master, we saw
one casting out devils in thy name; and we
forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not
accompany us.”
And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the
plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Then Jesus declared, “No
one who puts his hand to the
plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
Whoever listens to you listens to Me;
whoever rejects you rejects Me; and
whoever rejects Me rejects the
One who sent Me.”
All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will
reveal him.
All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No
one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no
one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to
reveal Him.”
And, behold, a certain
lawyer stood up, and
tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?
One day an
expert in the law stood up to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to
inherit eternal life?”
And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
“The
one who showed him mercy,” replied the
expert in the law. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
One day in a place where Jesus had just finished praying, one of His disciples requested, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
And
forgive us our sins; for we also
forgive every
one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into
temptation; but deliver us from evil.
And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at
midnight, and say unto him, Friend,
lend me three
loaves;
Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose
one of you goes to his friend at
midnight and says, ‘Friend,
lend me three
loaves of bread,
And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Do not bother me. My door is already shut, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
For
everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
And he was casting out a devil, and it was
dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the
dumb spake; and the people wondered.
One day Jesus was driving out a
demon that was
mute. And when the
demon was gone, the man who had been
mute spoke. The crowds were
amazed,
The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and
condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and
condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now
One greater than Solomon is here.
The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall
condemn it: for they
repented at the preaching of
Jonas; and, behold, a greater than
Jonas is here.
The men of
Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and
condemn it; for they
repented at the preaching of
Jonah, and now
One greater than
Jonah is here.
No man, when he hath lighted a
candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a
bushel, but on a
candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
No
one lights a lamp and puts it in a
cellar or under a
basket. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.
Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
You fools! Did not the One who made the outside make the inside as well?
Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
One of the experts in the law told Him, “Teacher, when You say these things, You
insult us as well.”
And he said,
Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye
lade men with burdens
grievous to be borne, and ye
yourselves touch not the burdens with
one of your fingers.
“
Woe to you as well, experts in the law!” He replied. “You
weigh men down with heavy burdens, but you
yourselves will not lift a finger to
lighten their load.
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people,
insomuch that they
trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all,
Beware ye of the
leaven of the
Pharisees, which is
hypocrisy.
In the meantime, a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were
trampling one another. Jesus began to speak first to His disciples: “
Beware of the
leaven of the
Pharisees, which is
hypocrisy.
But I will
forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into
hell;
yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear the
One who, after you have been killed, has authority to throw you into
hell.
Yes, I tell you, fear Him!
Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
Are not five sparrows sold for two
pennies? Yet not
one of them is forgotten by God.
And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
And he said unto them, Take
heed, and
beware of
covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard
yourselves against every form of
greed, for
one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I
bestow all my fruits and my goods.
Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will
tear down my barns and will build
bigger ones, and there I will store up all my grain and my goods.
And which of you with taking thought can add to his
stature one cubit?
Who of you by
worrying can add a single hour to his life?
Consider the
lilies how they grow: they
toil not, they
spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not
arrayed like
one of these.
Consider how the
lilies grow: They do not labor or
spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like
one of these.
But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto
whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
But the
one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From
everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded.
For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.
And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,
The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou
hypocrite,
doth not each
one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his
ass from the
stall, and lead him away to watering?
“You hypocrites!” the Lord replied. “Does not each of you on the Sabbath
untie his ox or
donkey from the
stall and lead it to water?
Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,
“Lord,” someone asked Him, “will only a few people be saved?” Jesus answered,
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of
one of the chief
Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the home of a leading
Pharisee, and those in attendance were watching Him closely.
For
everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the
one who humbles himself will be
exalted.”
And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
When
one of those
reclining with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is
everyone who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
And they all with
one consent began to make
excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me
excused.
But
one after another they all began to make excuses. The first
one said, ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go see it. Please
excuse me.’
For I say unto you, That none of those men which were
bidden shall taste of my
supper.
For I tell you, not
one of those men who were invited will taste my
banquet.’”
Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can
engage with ten thousand men the
one coming against him with twenty thousand?
So likewise,
whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose
one of them,
doth not leave the
ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses
one of them, does not leave the
ninety-nine in the pasture and go after the
one that is lost, until he finds it?
I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over
one sinner that repenteth, more than over
ninety and nine just persons, which need no
repentance.
In the same way, I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over
one sinner who repents than over
ninety-nine righteous
ones who do not need to
repent.
Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose
one piece,
doth not light a
candle, and
sweep the house, and seek
diligently till she find it?
Or what woman who has ten silver coins and loses
one of them does not light a lamp,
sweep her house, and search carefully until she finds it?
Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over
one sinner that repenteth.
In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over
one sinner who repents.”
And he would
fain have filled his
belly with the
husks that the
swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
He longed to fill his
belly with the pods the pigs were eating, but no
one would give him a thing.
And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as
one of thy
hired servants.
I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like
one of your
hired servants.”’
And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
So he called one of the servants and asked what was going on.
So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?
And he called in each one of his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master?’ he asked the first.
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will
hate the
one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the
one, and
despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and
mammon.
No servant can serve two masters. Either he will
hate the
one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the
one and
despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
And he said unto them, Ye are they which
justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is
abomination in the sight of God.
So He said to them, “You are the
ones who
justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is prized among men is
detestable before God.
And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than
one tittle of the law to fail.
But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
And it came to pass, that the
beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s
bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
One day the
beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried.
And he said,
Nay, father Abraham: but if
one went unto them from the dead, they will
repent.
‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they will
repent.’
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not
listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but
woe unto him, through whom they come!
Jesus said to His disciples, “It is inevitable that
stumbling blocks will come, but
woe to the
one through whom they come!
It were better for him that a
millstone were
hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should
offend one of these little
ones.
It would be better for him to have a
millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea than to cause
one of these little
ones to
stumble.
And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood
afar off:
As He entered one of the villages, He was met by ten lepers. They stood at a distance
And
one of them, when he saw that he was
healed, turned back, and with a loud voice
glorified God,
When
one of them saw that he was
healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice.
There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
Was no one found except this foreigner to return and give glory to God?”
And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not seeit.
Then He said to the disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.
For as the
lightning, that lighteneth out of the
one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
For just as the
lightning flashes and lights up the sky from
one end to the other, so will be the Son of Man in His day.
In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
On that day, let no
one on the housetop come down to
retrieve his possessions. Likewise, let no
one in the field return for anything he has left behind.
I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed: one will be taken and the other left.
Two women shall be
grinding together; the
one shall be taken, and the other left.
Two women will be
grinding grain together:
one will be taken and the other left.”
Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the
one a
Pharisee, and the other a
publican.
“Two men went up to the temple to pray.
One was a
Pharisee and the other a tax
collector.
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every
one that exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be
exalted.
I tell you, this man, rather than the
Pharisee, went home justified. For
everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the
one who humbles himself will be
exalted.”
And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
“Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good except God alone.
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou
one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
On hearing this, Jesus told him, “You still lack
one thing: Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have
treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
And he said unto them,
Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God
And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
When he returned from
procuring his
kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each
one had
earned.
And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’
And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
Then he told those standing by, ‘Take the
mina from him and give it to the
one who has ten
minas.’
For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
He replied, ‘I tell you that
everyone who has will be given more; but the
one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a
colt tied,
whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him
hither.
saying, “Go into the village
ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a
colt tied there, on which no
one has ever sat.
Untie it and bring it here.
And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee
one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy
visitation.
They will level you to the ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave
one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your
visitation from God.”
And it came to pass, that on
one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the
scribes came upon him with the elders,
One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and
proclaiming the gospel, the chief priests and
scribes, together with the elders, came up to Him.
And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
“I will also ask you a question,” Jesus replied. “Tell Me:
There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a wife, but died childless.
As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that
doth serve.
But you shall not be like them. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves.
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But I am among you as one who serves.
Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials.
And I
appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
And I
bestow on you a kingdom, just as My Father has bestowed
one on Me,
Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a
purse, let him take it, and likewise his
scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and
buy one.
“Now, however,” He told them, “the
one with a
purse should take it, and likewise a
bag; and the
one without a sword should sell his
cloak and
buy one.
And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called
Judas,
one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to
kiss him.
While He was still speaking, a crowd arrived, led by the man called
Judas,
one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to
kiss Him.
And
one of them
smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
A short time later, someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.”
And about the space of
one hour after another
confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.
About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with Him, for he too is a
Galilean.”
Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as
one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things
whereof ye
accuse him:
and said to them, “You brought me this man as
one who was
inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him.
(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
And he released unto them him that for
sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
As they had requested, he released the one imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and handed Jesus over to their will.
And as they led him away, they laid hold upon
one Simon, a
Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon of
Cyrene on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.
And when they were come to the place, which is called
Calvary, there they
crucified him, and the malefactors,
one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
When they came to the place called The Skull, they
crucified Him there, along with the criminals,
one on His right and the other on His left.
And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them
derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
The people stood watching, and the rulers
sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen
One.”
And
one of the malefactors which were
hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save
thyself and us.
One of the criminals who hung there
heaped abuse on Him. “Are You not the Christ?” he said. “Save
Yourself and us!”
But the other
one rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment?
And he took it down, and
wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a
sepulchre that was
hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
Then he took it down,
wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no
one had yet been laid.
And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have
one to another, as ye walk, and are
sad?
He asked them, “What are you
discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with
sadness on their faces.
And the
one of them, whose name was
Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
One of them, named
Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only
visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”
