pray thee, and
tarry all night, and let thine heart be

ate and
drank together. Then the
girl’s father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight and let your heart be
merry.”

lodge here, that thine heart may be
merry; and to
morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
When the man got up to depart with his
concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the
girl’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Please

Spend the night here, that your heart may be
merry. Then you can get up early

guest in my house. Do not commit this
outrage.
And she said, I
pray you, let me
glean and gather after the reapers among the
sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she

glean and gather among the
sheaves after the harvesters.’ So she came out and has continued from morning until now, except that she rested a short time in the shelter.”

prayed unto the LORD, and
wept sore.

Hannah prayed to the LORD and
wept with many tears.
And it came to pass, as she continued
praying before the LORD, that
Eli marked her mouth.
As
Hannah kept on
praying before the LORD,
Eli watched her mouth.
Now
Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore
Eli thought she had been
drunken.
Hannah was
praying in her heart, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. So
Eli thought she was
drunk Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”

praying to the LORD.

I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
And
Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is
exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I
rejoice in thy salvation.
At that time
Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD in whom my horn is
exalted. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I
rejoice in Your salvation.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I
pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.

Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God

And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.

pleaded with Samuel, “
Pray to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die! For we have added to all our sins the evil of asking for a king.”
Moreover as for me, God
forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to
pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. And I will continue to teach you the good and right way.
Then said
Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I
pray you, how mine eyes have been
enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.
“My father has brought trouble to the land,”
Jonathan replied. “Just look at how my eyes have
brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.
Now therefore, I
pray thee,
pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.
Now therefore, please
forgive my sin and return with me so I can worship the LORD.”
Then he said, I have
sinned: yet honour me now, I
pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.
“I have
sinned,” Saul replied. “Please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD your God.”
And Saul sent to
Jesse, saying, Let David, I
pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
Then Saul sent word to
Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
But
Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and
Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I
pray thee, take
heed to
thyself until the morning, and
abide in a secret place, and hide
thyself:
so he
warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret place and hide there.
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he did not come to the king’s table.”
And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.
From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab, where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I learn what God will do for me.”
Go, I
pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his
haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very
subtilly.
Please go and prepare further.
Investigate and watch carefully where he goes and who has seen him there, for I am told that he is extremely
cunning.
Ask thy young men, and they will
shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I
pray thee,
whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can afford to your servants and to your son David.’”
And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine
handmaid, I
pray thee, speak in thine
audience, and hear the words of thine
handmaid.
She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the
blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.
Let not my lord, I
pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
I
pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of thine
handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your servant’s
offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
Then said
Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me
smite him, I
pray thee, with the
spear even to the earth at once, and I will not
smite him the second time.
Abishai said to David, “
Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand. Now, therefore, please let me thrust the
spear through him into the ground with one stroke. I will not need to strike him twice!”
The LORD
forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’S
anointed: but, I
pray thee, take thou now the
spear that is at his
bolster, and the
cruse of water, and let us go.
But the LORD
forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’s
anointed. Instead, take the
spear and water
jug by his head, and let us go.”
Now therefore, I
pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have
stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men,
cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from
abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has
stirred you up against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be
cursed in the presence of the LORD! For
today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
And Saul
disguised himself, and put on other
raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I
pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “
Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
Now therefore, I
pray thee,
hearken thou also unto the voice of thine
handmaid, and let me set a
morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.
Now please
listen to your servant and let me set a
morsel of bread before you so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.”
And David said unto him, How went the matter? I
pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and
Jonathan his son are dead also.
“What was the outcome?” David asked. “Please tell me.” “The troops fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son
Jonathan are also dead.”
And he said unto me again, Stand, I
pray thee, upon me, and
slay me: for
anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.
Then he
begged me, ‘Stand over me and kill me, for
agony has seized me, but my life still lingers.’
For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, ‘I will build a house for you.’ Therefore Your servant has found the courage to offer this prayer to You.
And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make
thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I
pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
So Amnon lay down and
feigned illness. When the king came to see him, Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
And I,
whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I
pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not
withhold me from thee.
Where could I ever take my shame? And you would be like one of the fools in Israel! Please speak to the king, for he will not
withhold me from you.”
Then said
Absalom, If not, I
pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?
“If not,” said
Absalom, “please let my brother Amnon go with us.” “Why should he go with you?” the king asked.
So
Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a
mourner; put on clothes for
mourning and do not
anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has
mourned for the dead a long time.
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
Then the woman said, Let thine
handmaid, I
pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak a word to my lord the king?” “Speak,” he replied.
Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to ask you something; do not
conceal it from me!” “Let my lord the king speak,” she replied.
And it came to pass after forty years, that
Absalom said unto the king, I
pray thee, let me go and pay my
vow, which I have
vowed unto the LORD, in
Hebron.
After four years had passed,
Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to
Hebron to
fulfill a
vow I have made to the LORD.
Then said
Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? let me go over, I
pray thee, and take off his head.
Then
Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!”
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok, however,
persisted and said to
Joab, “Regardless of whatever may happen, please let me also run behind the
Cushite!” “My son,”
Joab replied, “why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
Then
cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I
pray you, unto
Joab, Come near
hither, that I may speak with thee.
a wise woman called out from the city, “
Listen!
Listen! Please tell
Joab to come here so that I may speak with him.”
And the bones of Saul and
Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the
sepulchre of
Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.
And they buried the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan in Zela in the land of Benjamin, in the tomb of Saul’s father
Kish. After they had done everything the king had commanded, God answered their
prayers for the land.
And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that
smote the people, and said, Lo, I have
sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I
pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.
When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the
shepherd, have
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the LORD answered the
prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was
halted.
Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
Now please, come and let me
advise you. Save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.
And he said, Speak, I
pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee
nay,) that he give me
Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
Adonijah replied, “Please speak to King Solomon, since he will not turn you down. Let him give me
Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I
pray thee, say me not
nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee
nay.
“I have just one small request of you,” she said. “Do not deny me.” “Make your request, my mother,” the king replied, “for I will not deny you.”
And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I
pray thee, be
verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father.
And now, O God of Israel, please
confirm what You promised to Your servant, my father David.
Yet have thou respect unto the
prayer of thy servant, and to his
supplication, O LORD my God, to
hearken unto the cry and to the
prayer, which thy servant
prayeth before thee to day:
Yet regard the
prayer and
plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the
prayer that Your servant is
praying before You
today.
That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest
hearken unto the
prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place.
May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place.
And
hearken thou to the
supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall
pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest,
forgive.
Hear the
plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they
pray toward this place. May You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. May You hear and
forgive.
When thy people Israel be
smitten down before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and
confess thy name, and
pray, and make
supplication unto thee in this house:
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name,
praying and
pleading with You in this temple,
When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have
sinned against thee; if they
pray toward this place, and
confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them:
When the
skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people have
sinned against You, and they
pray toward this place and
confess Your name, and they turn from their sins because You have
afflicted them,
What
prayer and
supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:
then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple—
(For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house;
for they will hear of Your great name and mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,
If thy people go out to battle against their enemy,
whithersoever thou shalt send them, and shall
pray unto the LORD toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house that I have built for thy name:
When Your people go to war against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to the LORD in the direction of the city You have chosen and the house I have built for Your Name,
Then hear thou in heaven their
prayer and their
supplication, and maintain their cause.
then may You hear from heaven their
prayer and their
plea, and may You
uphold their cause.
And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away
captive, and
pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:
and when they return to You with all their heart and soul in the land of the enemies who took them
captive, and when they
pray to You in the direction of the land that You gave to their fathers, the city You have chosen, and the house I have built for Your Name,
Then hear thou their
prayer and their
supplication in heaven thy dwelling place, and maintain their cause,
then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, their
prayer and petition, and may You
uphold their cause.
And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of
praying all this
prayer and
supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from
kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.
Now when Solomon had finished
praying this entire
prayer and petition to the LORD, he got up before the altar of the LORD, where he had been
kneeling with his hands spread out toward heaven.
And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy
prayer and thy
supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have
hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
And the LORD said to him: “I have heard your
prayer and petition before Me. I have consecrated this temple you have built by putting My Name there
forever; My eyes and My heart will be there for all time.
And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and
pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God
besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
Then the king
responded to the man of God, “
Intercede with the LORD your God and
pray that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God
interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as it was before.
And
Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I
pray thee, and
disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of
Jeroboam; and get thee to
Shiloh: behold, there is
Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people.
So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said,
Fetch me, I
pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
So
Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks.
Elijah called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, so that I may drink.”
And as she was going to
fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I
pray thee, a
morsel of bread in thine hand.
And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread.”
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I
pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a
juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a
broom tree and
prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
And he left the oxen, and ran after
Elijah, and said, Let me, I
pray thee,
kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
So
Elisha left the oxen, ran after
Elijah, and said, “Please let me
kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will follow you.” “Go on back,”
Elijah replied, “for what have I done to you?”
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please take note and see that this man is looking for trouble, for when he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, I did not deny him.”
And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful kings: let us, I
pray thee, put
sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel:
peradventure he will save thy life.
Then the servants of Ben-
hadad said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful. Let us go out to the king of Israel with
sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will
spare your life.”
So they
girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-
hadad saith, I
pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
So with
sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-
hadad says, ‘Please
spare my life.’” And the king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD,
Smite me, I
pray thee. And the man refused to
smite him.
Meanwhile, by the word of the LORD, one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me, please!” But the man refused to strike him.
Then he found another man, and said,
Smite me, I
pray thee. And the man

smiting he wounded him.
Then the prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please!” So the man struck him and wounded him,

Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel,
Enquire, I
pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day.
But
Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for the word of the LORD.”
And the
messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I
pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold now, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I
pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
begged him, “Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants please be precious in your sight.
And
Elijah said unto
Elisha,
Tarry here, I
pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to
Bethel. And
Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to
Bethel.
and
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to
Bethel.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to
Bethel.
And
Elijah said unto him,
Elisha,
tarry here, I
pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to
Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to
Jericho.
And
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to
Jericho.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went to
Jericho.
And
Elijah said unto him,
Tarry, I
pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
And
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that
Elijah said unto
Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And
Elisha said, I
pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
After they had crossed over,
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken away from you?” “Please, let me
inherit a double portion of your spirit,”
Elisha replied.
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we
pray thee, and seek thy master: lest
peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
“Look now,” they said to
Elisha, “we your servants have fifty
valiant men. Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,”
Elisha replied.
And the men of the city said unto
Elisha, Behold, I
pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord
seeth: but the water is
naught, and the ground barren.
Then the men of the city said to
Elisha, “Please note, our lord, that the city’s
location is good, as you can see. But the water is bad and the land is unfruitful.”
Let us make a little chamber, I
pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a
stool, and a
candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.
Please let us make a small room
upstairs and put in it a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp for him. Then when he comes to us, he can stay there.”
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I
pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the
asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.
And the woman called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the
donkeys, that I may go quickly to the man of God and return.”
