And next him were
Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the cities of the
priests, in their set office, to give to their brethren by courses, as well to the great as to the small:
Under his authority,
Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah faithfully distributed portions to their fellow
priests in their cities, according to their divisions, old and young alike.
Both to the
genealogy of the
priests by the house of their fathers, and the Levites from twenty years old and upward, in their charges by their courses;
and to the
priests enrolled according to their families in the
genealogy, as well as to the Levites twenty years of age or older, according to their duties and divisions.
Also of the sons of Aaron the
priests, which were in the fields of the suburbs of their cities, in every several city, the men that were expressed by name, to give portions to all the males among the
priests, and to all that were reckoned by
genealogies among the Levites.
As for the
priests, the descendants of Aaron, who lived on the farmlands around each of their cities or in any other city, men were designated by name to distribute a portion to every male among the
priests and to every
Levite listed by the
genealogies.
And he burnt the bones of the
priests upon their altars, and
cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
Then he burned the bones of the
priests on their altars. So he
cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high
priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high
priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites at the doors had collected from the people of
Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the
remnant of Israel, Judah, and Benjamin, and from the people of Jerusalem.
And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.
While they were bringing out the money that had been taken into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the LORD written by Moses.
Then Shaphan the
scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the
priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.
Moreover, Shaphan the
scribe told the king, “Hilkiah the
priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD,
He appointed the priests to their duties and encouraged them in the service of the house of the LORD.
And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the
priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and
Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the
priests for the
passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.
His officials also contributed willingly to the people and
priests and Levites. Hilkiah,
Zechariah, and Jehiel, the administrators of the house of God, gave the
priests 2,600
Passover offerings and 300 bulls.
So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.
So the service was prepared; the priests stood in their places and the Levites in their divisions according to the king’s command.
And they slaughtered the
Passover lambs, while the
priests sprinkled the blood handed to them and the Levites
skinned the animals.
And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the
priests: because the
priests the sons of Aaron were
busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the
priests the sons of Aaron.
Afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the
priests, since the
priests, the descendants of Aaron, were offering up burnt offerings and fat until
nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the
priests, the descendants of Aaron.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the
priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed with the
priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
Moreover all the chief of the
priests, and the people,
transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and
polluted the house of the LORD which he had
hallowed in Jerusalem.
Furthermore, all the leaders of the
priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they
defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.
Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.
So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along with the
priests and Levites—
everyone whose spirit God had
stirred—prepared to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.
The priests: the children of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred seventy and three.
The priests: The descendants of Jedaiah (through the house of Jeshua), 973;
And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai; which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name:
And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai (who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name).
These sought their register among those that were reckoned by
genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as
polluted, put from the
priesthood.
These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.
And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a
priest with
Urim and with
Thummim.
The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a
priest to
consult the
Urim and
Thummim.
They gave after their ability unto the
treasure of the work
threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pound of silver, and one hundred
priests garments.
According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000
minas of silver, and 100
priestly garments.
So the
priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the
priests, and
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings
thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.
Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow
priests, along with
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the
remnant of their brethren the
priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.
In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the
priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to
supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.
And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the
priests in their
apparel with
trumpets, and the Levites the sons of
Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the
ordinance of David king of Israel.
When the builders had laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the
priests in their
apparel with
trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of
Asaph) with cymbals, took their positions to praise the LORD, as David king of Israel had prescribed.
But many of the
priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes,
wept with a loud voice; and many
shouted aloud for joy:
But many of the older
priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple
wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this temple. Still, many others
shouted joyfully.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
And the children of Israel, the
priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the
dedication of this house of God with joy,
Then the people of Israel—the
priests, the Levites, and the rest of the exiles—celebrated the
dedication of the house of God with joy.
And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.
They also appointed the priests by their divisions and the Levites by their groups to the service of God in Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.
For the
priests and the Levites were
purified together, all of them were pure, and killed the
passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brethren the
priests, and for themselves.
All the
priests and Levites had
purified themselves and were
ceremonially clean. And the Levites slaughtered the
Passover lamb for all the exiles, for their
priestly brothers, and for themselves.
The son of Abishua, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief
priest:
the son of Abishua, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief
priest—
And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the
priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of
Artaxerxes the king.
So in the seventh year of King
Artaxerxes, he went up to Jerusalem with some of the Israelites, including
priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants.
Now this is the copy of the letter that the king
Artaxerxes gave unto
Ezra the
priest, the
scribe, even a
scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD, and of his statutes to Israel.
This is the text of the letter King
Artaxerxes had given to
Ezra the
priest and
scribe, an
expert in the commandments and statutes of the LORD to Israel:
Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto
Ezra the
priest, a
scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and at such a time.
Artaxerxes, king of kings. To
Ezra the
priest, the
scribe of the Law of the God of heaven: Greetings.
I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his
priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own
freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.
I
hereby decree that any
volunteers among the Israelites in my kingdom, including the
priests and Levites, may go up with you to Jerusalem.
And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the
freewill offering of the people, and of the
priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem:
together with all the silver and gold you may find in all the province of Babylon, as well as the
freewill offerings of the people and
priests to the house of their God in Jerusalem.
And I, even I
Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that
whatsoever Ezra the
priest, the
scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,
I, King
Artaxerxes, decree to all the treasurers west of the Euphrates: Whatever
Ezra the
priest, the
scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it must be provided
promptly,
Also we
certify you, that touching any of the
priests and Levites, singers,
porters,
Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to
impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.
And be
advised that you have no authority to
impose tribute, duty, or
toll on any of the
priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.
And I gathered them together to the river than runneth to
Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the
priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.
Now I assembled these exiles at the canal that flows to
Ahava, and we camped there three days. And when I searched among the people and
priests, I found no Levites there.
Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,
Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, together with Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers,
Watch ye, and keep them, until ye
weigh them before the chief of the
priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD.
Guard them carefully until you
weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the LORD in Jerusalem before the leading
priests, Levites, and heads of the
Israelite families.”
So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.
So the
priests and Levites took charge of the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been
weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.
Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels
weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the
priest; and with him was
Eleazar the son of
Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;
On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we
weighed out the silver and gold and sacred articles into the hand of Meremoth son of Uriah, the
priest.
Eleazar son of
Phinehas was with him, along with the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.
Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the
priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Jebusites, the
Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
After these things had been accomplished, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, including the
priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the surrounding peoples whose abominations are like those of the
Canaanites,
Hittites,
Perizzites, Jebusites,
Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and
Amorites.
Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great
trespass unto this day; and for our
iniquities have we, our kings, and our
priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
From the days of our fathers to this day, our guilt has been great. Because of our
iniquities, we and our kings and
priests have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the earth and put to the sword and captivity, to
pillage and
humiliation, as we are this day.
Then arose
Ezra, and made the chief
priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to
swear that they should do according to this word. And they
sware.
So
Ezra got up and made the leading
priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do what had been said. And they took the oath.
And
Ezra the
priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have
transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the
trespass of Israel.
Then
Ezra the
priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful by marrying foreign women, adding to the guilt of Israel.
And the children of the captivity did so. And
Ezra the
priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
So the exiles did as proposed.
Ezra the
priest selected men who were family heads, each of them identified by name, to represent their families. On the first day of the tenth month they
launched the investigation,
And among the sons of the
priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and
Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.
Among the descendants of the priests who had married foreign women were found these descendants of Jeshua son of Jozadak and his brothers:
And the rulers knew not
whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the
priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, for I had not yet told the Jews or priests or nobles or officials or any other workers.
Then Eliashib the high
priest rose up with his brethren the
priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they
sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they
sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel.
At the Sheep Gate, Eliashib the high
priest and his fellow
priests began rebuilding. They dedicated it and
installed its doors. After building as far as the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel, they dedicated the wall.
After him
Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece, from the turning of the wall unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high
priest.
Next to him,
Baruch son of Zabbai
diligently repaired another section, from the angle to the
doorway of the house of Eliashib the high
priest.
And after him repaired the priests, the men of the plain.
And next to him, the priests from the surrounding area made repairs.
From above the horse gate repaired the priests, every one over against his house.
Above the Horse Gate, each of the priests made repairs in front of his own house.
Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
“We will restore it,” they replied, “and will require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.” So I summoned the priests and required of the nobles and officials an oath that they would do what they had promised.
The priests: the children of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred seventy and three.
The priests: the descendants of Jedaiah (through the house of Jeshua), 973;
And of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai, which took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name.
And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai (who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name).
These sought their register among those that were reckoned by
genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, as
polluted, put from the
priesthood.
These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.
And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a
priest with
Urim and
Thummim.
The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a
priest to
consult the
Urim and
Thummim.
And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the
treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty
priests’ garments.
Some of the heads of the families contributed to the project. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics of gold, 50
bowls, and 530
priestly garments.
And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pounds of silver, and
threescore and seven
priests’ garments.
The rest of the people gave a total of 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000
minas of silver, and 67
priestly garments.
So the
priests, and the Levites, and the
porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the
Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
So the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and temple servants, along with some of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. And by the seventh month the Israelites had settled in their towns.
And
Ezra the
priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.
On the first day of the seventh month,
Ezra the
priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could
listen and understand.
And
Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and
Ezra the
priest the
scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God;
mourn not, nor
weep. For all the people
wept, when they heard the words of the law.
Nehemiah the governor,
Ezra the
priest and
scribe, and the Levites who were
instructing the people said to all of them, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not
mourn or
weep.” For all the people were
weeping as they heard the words of the Law.
And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the
priests, and the Levites, unto
Ezra the
scribe, even to understand the words of the law.
On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the
priests and Levites, gathered around
Ezra the
scribe to study the words of the Law.
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
So now, our God, the great and mighty and
awesome God who keeps His
gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the
hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our
priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until
today.
Our kings and leaders and
priests and fathers did not obey Your law or
listen to Your commandments and warnings that You gave them.
And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
In view of all this, we make a binding agreement, putting it in writing and sealing it with the names of our leaders, Levites, and priests.”
Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah: these were the priests.
Maaziah, Bilgai, and Shemaiah. These were the priests.
And the rest of the people, the
priests, the Levites, the
porters, the singers, the
Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
“The rest of the people—the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the people of the land to obey the Law of God—along with their wives and all their sons and daughters who are able to understand,
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:
We have cast lots among the
priests, Levites, and people for the
donation of wood by our families at the appointed times each year. They are to bring it to the house of our God to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law.
Also the
firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the
priests that minister in the house of our God:
And we will bring the
firstborn of our sons and our
livestock, as it is written in the Law, and will bring the
firstborn of our herds and flocks to the house of our God, to the
priests who minister in the house of our God.
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our
dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the
priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the
tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the
tithes in all the cities of our
tillage.
Moreover, we will bring to the
priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our
dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive
tithes in all the towns where we labor.
And the
priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take
tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the
tithe of the
tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the
treasure house.
A
priest of Aaron’s line is to
accompany the Levites when they collect the tenth, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of these
tithes to the storerooms of the treasury in the house of our God.
For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the
priests that minister, and the
porters, and the singers: and we will not
forsake the house of our God.
For the Israelites and the Levites are to bring the contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers stay. Thus we will not neglect the house of our God.”
Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the
priests, and the Levites, and the
Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants.
These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem. (In the villages of Judah, however, each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants—
Of the
priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib,
Jachin.
From the priests:
And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance.
The rest of the Israelites, with the priests and Levites, were in all the villages of Judah, each on his own inheritance.
Now these are the
priests and the Levites that went up with
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah,
Ezra,
Now these are the
priests and Levites who went up with
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and with Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah,
Ezra,
Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, Jedaiah. These were the chief of the priests and of their brethren in the days of Jeshua.
Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, and Jedaiah. These were the leaders of the priests and their associates in the days of Jeshua.
And in the days of Joiakim were priests, the chief of the fathers: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah;
In the days of Joiakim, these were the heads of the priestly families: of the family of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah;
The Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, were recorded chief of the fathers: also the
priests, to the reign of
Darius the Persian.
In the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, and Jaddua, during the reign of
Darius the Persian, the heads of the families of the Levites and
priests were recorded.
These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of
Nehemiah the governor, and of
Ezra the
priest, the
scribe.
They served in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of
Nehemiah the governor and
Ezra the
priest and
scribe.
And the
priests and the Levites
purified themselves, and
purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.
After the
priests and Levites had
purified themselves, they
purified the people, the gates, and the wall.
And certain of the
priests’ sons with
trumpets; namely,
Zechariah the son of
Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Michaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of
Asaph:
and some of the
priests with
trumpets, and also
Zechariah son of
Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of
Asaph,
And the
priests; Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Michaiah, Elioenai,
Zechariah, and Hananiah, with
trumpets;
as well as the
priests with their
trumpets—Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai,
Zechariah, and Hananiah—
And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the
tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the
priests and Levites: for Judah
rejoiced for the
priests and for the Levites that waited.
And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and
tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the
priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because Judah
rejoiced over the
priests and Levites who were serving.
And before this, Eliashib the
priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto
Tobiah:
Now before this, Eliashib the
priest, a relative of
Tobiah, had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God
And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where
aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the
frankincense, and the vessels, and the
tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the
porters; and the offerings of the
priests.
and had prepared for
Tobiah a large room where they had previously stored the grain offerings, the
frankincense, the temple articles, and the
tithes of grain, new wine, and oil prescribed for the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, along with the contributions for the
priests.
And I made treasurers over the
treasuries, Shelemiah the
priest, and
Zadok the
scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.
I appointed as treasurers over the storerooms Shelemiah the
priest,
Zadok the
scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, with Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, to assist them, because they were considered
trustworthy. They were responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.
And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high
priest, was son in law to
Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I
chased him from me.
Even one of the sons of Jehoiada son of Eliashib the high
priest had become a son-in-law to
Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I drove him away from me.
Remember them, O my God, because they have
defiled the
priesthood, and the covenant of the
priesthood, and of the Levites.
Remember them, O my God, because they have
defiled the
priesthood and the covenant of the
priesthood and of the Levites.
Thus
cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the
priests and the Levites, every one in his business;
Thus I
purified the
priests and Levites from everything foreign, and I assigned specific duties to each of the
priests and Levites.
He leadeth princes away
spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.
He leads
priests away
barefoot and overthrows the established.
Their
priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no
lamentation.
His
priests fell by the sword, but their widows could not
lament.
Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.
Moses and Aaron were among His priests; Samuel was among those who called on His name. They called to the LORD and He answered.
Let thy
priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints
shout for joy.
May Your
priests be clothed with righteousness, and Your saints
shout for joy.
I will also
clothe her
priests with salvation: and her saints shall
shout aloud for joy.
I will
clothe her
priests with salvation, and her saints will sing out in joy.
And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the
priest, and
Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.
