Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
See, the LORD your God has placed the land before you. Go up and take possession of it as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has told you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”
And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
Then all of you approached me and
said, “Let us send men
ahead of us to search out the land and bring us word of what route to follow and which cities to enter.”
And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and
said, It is a good land which the LORD our God
doth give us.
They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, carried it down to us, and brought us word: “It is a good land that the LORD our God is giving us.”
And ye
murmured in your tents, and
said, Because the LORD
hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us.
You grumbled in your tents and
said, “Because the LORD hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites to be
annihilated.
Then I
said unto you,
Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
So I
said to you: “Do not be
terrified or afraid of them!
Also the LORD was
angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.
The LORD was also
angry with me on your account, and He
said, “Not even you shall enter the land.
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
And the little ones you
said would become
captives—your children who on that day did not know good from evil—will enter the land that I will give them, and they will possess it.
Then ye answered and
said unto me, We have
sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had
girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
“We have
sinned against the LORD,” you replied. “We will go up and fight, as the LORD our God has commanded us.” Then each of you put on his weapons of war, thinking it easy to go up into the hill country.
And the LORD
said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be
smitten before your enemies.
But the LORD said to me, “Tell them not to go up and fight, for I am not with you to keep you from defeat by your enemies.”
And the LORD spake unto me, saying,
At this time the LORD said to me,
And the LORD
said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither
contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
Then the LORD
said to me, “Do not
harass the Moabites or
provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
Now rise up,
said I, and get you over the
brook Zered. And we went over the
brook Zered.
“Now arise and cross over the
Brook of Zered.” So we crossed over the
Brook of Zered.
That the LORD spake unto me, saying,
the LORD said to me,
And the LORD
said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest
inherit his land.
Then the LORD
said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land over to you. Now begin to
conquer and possess his land.”
And the LORD
said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou
didst unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, which dwelt at
Heshbon.
But the LORD
said to me, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon.”
But the LORD was
wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD
said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.
But the LORD was
angry with me on account of you, and He would not
listen to me. “That is enough,” the LORD
said to me. “Do not speak to Me again about this matter.
Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in
Horeb, when the LORD
said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
The day you stood before the LORD your God at
Horeb, the LORD
said to me, “Gather the people before Me to hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach them to their children.”
And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I declare in your hearing this day. Learn them and observe them carefully.
(I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to
shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,
At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. And He said:
And ye
said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God
doth talk with man, and he liveth.
and you
said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the fire.
Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with him.
And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the LORD said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.
And the LORD heard the words you spoke to me, and He said to me, “I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken.
To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.
driving out all your enemies before you, as the LORD has said.
A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of
Anak!
The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the
Anakim. You know about them, and you have heard it
said, “Who can stand up to the sons of
Anak?”
Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a
consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath
said unto thee.
But understand that
today the LORD your God goes across
ahead of you as a
consuming fire; He will destroy them and
subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and
annihilate them swiftly, as the LORD has promised you.
And the LORD
said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a
molten image.
And the LORD
said to me, “Get up and go down from here at once, for your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned aside from the way that I commanded them! They have made for themselves a
molten image.”
Furthermore the LORD spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
The LORD also said to me, “I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked people.
Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor
hearkened to his voice.
And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh-barnea, He said, “Go up and possess the land that I have given you.” But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You neither believed Him nor obeyed Him.
Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.
So I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, because the LORD had said He would destroy you.
I prayed therefore unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
And I prayed to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, whom You redeemed through Your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
At that time the LORD
said unto me,
Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood.
At that time the LORD
said to me, “
Chisel out two stone tablets like the originals, come up to Me on the mountain, and make an ark of wood.
And the LORD
said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I
sware unto their fathers to give unto them.
Then the LORD
said to me, “Get up. Continue your journey
ahead of the people, that they may enter and possess the land that I
swore to their fathers to give them.”
There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the
dread of you upon all the land that ye shall
tread upon, as he hath
said unto you.
No man will be able to stand against you; the LORD your God will put the fear and
dread of you upon all the land, wherever you set foot, as He has promised you.
If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,
If, regarding one of the cities the LORD your God is giving you to inhabit, you hear it said
But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses:
forasmuch as the LORD hath
said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
But the king must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire more horses, for the LORD has said, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’
Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
Although they have no inheritance among their brothers, the LORD is their inheritance, as He promised them.
According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in
Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
This is what you asked of the LORD your God at
Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you
said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”
And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
Then the LORD said to me, “They have spoken well.
And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way
whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for
bondmen and
bondwomen, and no man shall
buy you.
The LORD will return you to Egypt in ships by a route that I
said you should never see again. There you will sell
yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will
buy you.”
And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;
Moses summoned all Israel and proclaimed to them, “You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to all his land.
That he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he hath
said unto thee, and as he hath
sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
and so that He may establish you
today as His people, and He may be your God as He promised you and as He
swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
he said to them, “I am now a hundred and twenty years old; I am no longer able to come and go, and the LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’
The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.
The LORD your God Himself will cross over
ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will dispossess them. Joshua will cross
ahead of you, as the LORD has
said.
And Moses called unto Joshua, and
said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath
sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to
inherit it.
Then Moses called for Joshua and
said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and
courageous, for you will go with this people into the land that the LORD
swore to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.
And the LORD
said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present
yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.

said to Moses, “Behold, the time of your death is near. Call Joshua and present
yourselves at the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tent of Meeting.
And the LORD
said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a
whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land,
whither they go to be among them, and will
forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
And the LORD
said to Moses, “You will soon rest with your fathers, and these people will rise up and
prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will
forsake Me and break the covenant I have made with them.
And he gave Joshua the son of
Nun a charge, and
said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I
sware unto them: and I will be with thee.
Then the LORD commissioned Joshua son of
Nun and
said, “Be strong and
courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land that I
swore to give them, and I will be with you.”
And he
said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very
froward generation, children in whom is no faith.
He
said: “I will hide My face from them; I will see what will be their end. For they are a
perverse generation— children of unfaithfulness.
I
said, I would
scatter them into corners, I would make the
remembrance of them to cease from among men:
I would have
said that I would cut them to pieces and
blot out their memory from mankind,
And he
said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I
testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.
he
said to them, “Take to heart all these words I
testify among you
today, so that you may command your children to carefully follow all the words of this law.
And the LORD spake unto Moses that
selfsame day, saying,
On that same day the LORD said to Moses,
And he
said, The LORD came from
Sinai, and rose up from
Seir unto them; he
shined forth from mount
Paran, and he came with ten thousands of
saints: from his right hand went a
fiery law for them.
He
said: “The LORD came from
Sinai and
dawned upon us from
Seir; He
shone forth from Mount
Paran and came with myriads of holy ones, with flaming fire at His right hand.
Yea, he loved the people; all his
saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.
Surely You love the people; all the holy ones are in Your hand, and they sit down at Your feet; each receives Your words—
And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.

Thummim to Levi and Your
Urim to Your godly one, whom You tested at Massah and contested at the waters of Meribah.
Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.
He said of his father and mother, ‘I do not consider them.’ He disregarded his brothers and did not know his own sons, for he kept Your word and maintained Your covenant.
And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.

And of Joseph he
said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the

And of
Gad he
said, Blessed be he that enlargeth
Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.

domain of
Gad! He lies down like a lion and tears off an arm or a head.
And of
Naphtali he
said, O
Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south.

said to him, “This is the land that I
swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I
said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.”
So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.
So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, as the LORD had said.
Every place that the sole of your foot shall
tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I
said unto Moses.
I have given you every place where the sole of your foot will
tread, just as I promised to Moses.
And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of
Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,
But to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh, Joshua
said,
Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.
“Remember what Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you when he said, ‘The LORD your God will give you rest, and He will give you this land.’

spy out the whole land.”
And the woman took the two men, and
hid them, and
said thus, There came men unto me, but I
wist not whence they were:
But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she
said, “
Yes, the men did come to me, but I did not know where they had come from.
And she
said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land
faint because of you.
and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of you.
And she
said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide
yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
“Go to the hill country,” she
said, “so that your pursuers will not find you. Hide
yourselves there for three days until they have returned; then go on your way.”
And the men
said unto her, We will be
blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us
swear.
The men
said to her, “We will not be bound by this oath you made us
swear And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

tied the scarlet cord in the window.
And they
said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do

ahead of them.
And the LORD
said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to
magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

Today I will begin to
exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you just as I was with Moses.
And Joshua
said unto the children of Israel, Come
hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God.
So Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and
listen to the words of the LORD your God.”
And Joshua
said,
Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Hivites, and the
Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the Jebusites.
And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying,
When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua,
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
and said to them, “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of Israel,
And the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying,
Then the LORD said to Joshua,
And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
At that time the LORD
said to Joshua, “Make flint
knives and
circumcise the sons of Israel once again.”

said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called

Gilgal to this day.
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by
Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and
said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our
adversaries?
Now when Joshua was near
Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”
And he
said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and
said unto him, What
saith my lord unto his servant?
“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”
And the captain of the LORD’S host
said unto Joshua, Loose thy
shoe from off thy foot; for the place
whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
The Commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your
sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
And the LORD
said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand
Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.

valor.
And Joshua the son of
Nun called the priests, and
said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven
trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD.
So Joshua son of
Nun summoned the priests and
said, “Take up the ark of the covenant and have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark of the LORD.”
And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.
And he told the people, “Advance and march around the city, with the armed troops going
ahead of the ark of the LORD.”
And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests
blew with the
trumpets, Joshua
said unto the people,
Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.
After the seventh time around, the priests
blew the horns, and Joshua commanded the people, “
Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!
But Joshua had
said unto the two men that had
spied out the country, Go into the
harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye
sware unto her.

spied out the land, “Go into the house of the
prostitute and bring out the woman and all who are with her, just as you promised her.”
And they returned to Joshua, and
said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and
smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
On returning to Joshua, they reported, “There is no need to send all the people; two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack
Ai. Since the people of
Ai are so few, you need not wear out all our people there.”
And Joshua
said,
Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
“O, Lord GOD,” Joshua
said, “why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
But the LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! Why have you fallen on your face?
Up,
sanctify the people, and say,
Sanctify yourselves against to
morrow: for thus
saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an
accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the
accursed thing from among you.
Get up and
consecrate the people, saying, ‘
Consecrate yourselves for
tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
And Joshua
said unto
Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
So Joshua
said to
Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make a confession to Him. I
urge you to tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
And
Achan answered Joshua, and
said, Indeed I have
sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
“It is true,”
Achan replied, “I have
sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I did:
And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
“Why have you brought this trouble upon us?”
said Joshua. “
Today the LORD will bring trouble upon you!” And all Israel stoned him to death. Then they stoned the others and burned their bodies.
