And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And they took the
things which
Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
After they had taken
Micah’s idols and his priest, they went to Laish, to a
tranquil and
unsuspecting people, and they struck them with their swords and burned down the city.
And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort
thine heart with a
morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the
damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and
tarry all night, and let
thine heart be
merry.
So they sat down and the two of them
ate and
drank together. Then the
girl’s father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight and let your heart be
merry.”
And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the
damsel’s father said, Comfort
thine heart, I pray thee. And they
tarried until
afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
On the fifth day, he got up early in the morning to depart, but the
girl’s father said, “Please refresh your heart.” So they waited until late
afternoon and the two of them
ate.
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his
concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the
damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you
tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end,
lodge here, that
thine heart may be
merry; and to
morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
When the man got up to depart with his
concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the
girl’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Please
spend the night. See, the day is almost over.
Spend the night here, that your heart may be
merry. Then you can get up early
tomorrow for your journey home.”
Yet there is both straw and
provender for our
asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy
handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any
thing.
even though there is both straw and feed for our
donkeys, and bread and wine for me and the
maidservant and young man with me. There is nothing that we, your servants, lack.”
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into
thine house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not do this wicked
thing! After all, this man is a
guest in my house. Do not commit this
outrage.
Behold, here is my daughter a
maiden, and his
concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so
vile a
thing.
Look, let me bring out my virgin daughter and the man’s
concubine, and you can use them and do with them as you wish. But do not do such a
vile thing to this man.”
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
And
everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this has been seen or done from the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until this day.
Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!”
(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?
(Meanwhile the Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to
Mizpah.) And the Israelites asked, “Tell us, how did this wicked
thing happen?”
But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;
Now this is what we will do to Gibeah: We will go against it as the lot dictates.
And
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to
morrow I will deliver them into
thine hand.
and
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The LORD answered, “Fight, for
tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
And this is the
thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath
lain by man.
This is what you are to do:
Devote to destruction every male, as well as every female who has had relations with a man.”
Let
thine eyes be on the field that they do
reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art
athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.
Let your eyes be on the field they are harvesting, and follow along after these girls. Indeed, I have ordered the young men not to touch you. And when you are
thirsty, go and drink from the jars the young men have filled.”
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you should take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?”
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of
thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto
thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of
thine handmaidens.
“My lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you have comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your servant girls.”
“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant
Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a
kinsman-
redeemer.”
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
“Wait, my daughter,” said
Naomi, “until you find out how
things go, for he will not rest unless he has resolved the matter
today.”
Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning
redeeming and concerning changing, for to
confirm all
things; a man
plucked off his
shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
Now in former times in Israel, concerning the
redemption or exchange of property, to make any matter legally binding a man would remove his
sandal and give it to the other party, and this was a
confirmation in Israel.
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into
thine house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a
nourisher of
thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
He will renew your life and
sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of
thine handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine handmaid, but
wilt give unto
thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
Count not
thine handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
And she said, Let
thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more
sad.
“May your
maidservant find favor with you,” said
Hannah. Then she went on her way, and she began eating again, and her face was no longer
downcast.
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good;
tarry until thou have
weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son
suck until she
weaned him.
“Do what you
think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you have
weaned him. Only may the LORD
confirm His word.” So
Hannah stayed and
nursed her son until she had
weaned him.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
“Why are you doing these
things?”
Eli said to his sons. “I hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no older man will be left in your house.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my
habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in
thine house for ever.
You will see distress in My dwelling place.
Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age.
And the man of
thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to
consume thine eyes, and to
grieve thine heart: and all the increase of
thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail and your heart will
grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in
thine house shall come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a
thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall
tingle.
Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel at which the ears of all who hear it will
tingle.
In that day I will perform against
Eli all
things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
On that day I will carry out against
Eli everything I have spoken about his family, from beginning to end.
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
“What was the message He gave you?”
Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God
punish you, and ever so severely, if you hide from me anything He said to you.”
And Samuel told him every
whit, and
hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
So Samuel told him everything and did not hide a
thing from him. “He is the LORD,” replied
Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a
thing heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
But when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” their demand was displeasing in the sight of Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the
seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to
morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in
thine heart.
“I am the
seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me
today. And when I send you off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your heart.
And as for
thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
As for the
donkeys you lost three days ago, do not
worry about them, for they have been found. And upon whom is all the desire of Israel, if not upon you and all your father’s house?”
And Saul answered and said, Am not I a
Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
Saul replied, “Am I not a
Benjamite from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of Benjamin? So why would you say such a
thing to me?”
Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.
Now, therefore, stand and see this great thing that the LORD will do before your eyes.
And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
Do not turn aside after worthless things that cannot profit you or deliver you, for they are empty.
Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.
And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
His
armor-bearer replied, “Do all that is in your heart. Go
ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
And the men of the garrison answered
Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a
thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
So the men of the outpost called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
While Saul was talking to the priest, the
commotion in the
Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
But Saul and the people
spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every
thing that was
vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
Saul and his troops
spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat
calves and lambs, and the best of everything else. They were unwilling to destroy them, but they devoted to destruction all that was
despised and worthless.
And Samuel said, When thou
wast little in
thine own sight,
wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD
anointed thee king over Israel?
And Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, have you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD
anointed you king over Israel
But the people took of the
spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the
things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in
Gilgal.
The troops took sheep and cattle from the
plunder, the best of the
things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at
Gilgal.”
And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has
torn the kingdom of Israel from you
today and has given it to your
neighbor who is better than you.
And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long
wilt thou
mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill
thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to
Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to
mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to
Jesse of
Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of
thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take
thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
And Saul cast the
javelin; for he said, I will
smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
and he
hurled it,
thinking, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David
eluded him twice.
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be
valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” But Saul was
thinking, “I need not raise my hand against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”
And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when this was reported to Saul, it pleased him.
And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
But when Saul’s servants relayed these words to David, he replied, “Does it seem
trivial in your sight to be the son-in-law of the king? I am a poor man and lightly esteemed.”
And
Jonathan called David, and
Jonathan shewed him all those
things. And
Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.
So
Jonathan summoned David and told him all these
things. Then
Jonathan brought David to Saul to serve him as he had before.
And he said unto him, God
forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will
shew it me: and why should my father hide this
thing from me? it is not so.
“Far from it!”
Jonathan replied. “You will not die. Indeed, my father does nothing, great or small, without telling me. So why would he hide this matter from me? This cannot be true!”
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in
thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
Nevertheless Saul spake not any
thing that day: for he thought, Something hath
befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.
Saul said nothing that day because he thought, “Something has happened to David to make him
ceremonially unclean—surely he is unclean.”
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he did not come to the king’s table.”
Then Saul’s anger was
kindled against
Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the
perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of
Jesse to
thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness?
Then Saul’s anger burned against
Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a
perverse and
rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of
Jesse to your own shame and to the disgrace of the mother who bore you?
But the
lad knew not any
thing: only
Jonathan and David knew the matter.
But the boy did not know anything; only
Jonathan and David knew the arrangement.
And David said unto
Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any
thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
Now therefore what is under
thine hand? give me five
loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.
Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five
loaves of bread, or whatever can be found.”
And David said unto
Ahimelech, And is there not here under
thine hand
spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required
haste.
Then David asked
Ahimelech, “Is there not a
spear or sword on hand here? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business was
urgent.”
Then
Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy
bidding, and is honourable in
thine house?
Ahimelech answered the king, “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king’s son-in-law, the captain of your
bodyguard who is honored in your house?
Did I then begin to
enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king
impute any
thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king
accuse your servant or any of my father’s household, for your servant knew nothing of this whole
affair—not in part or in whole.”
Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
Once again, David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him: “Go at once to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver
thine enemy into
thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And he said unto his men, The LORD
forbid that I should do this
thing unto my master, the LORD’S
anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the
anointed of the LORD.
So he said to his men, “The LORD
forbid that I should do such a
thing to my master, the LORD’s
anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.”
Behold, this day
thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some
bade me kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S
anointed.
Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my lord, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.’
The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and
plead my cause, and deliver me out of
thine hand.
May the LORD be our judge and decide between you and me. May He take notice and
plead my case and deliver me from your hand.”
And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and
wept.
When David had finished saying these
things, Saul called back, “Is that your voice, David my son?” Then Saul
wept aloud And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me:
forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into
thine hand, thou killedst me not.
And you have shown this day how well you have dealt with me; for when the LORD delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.
And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
Now I know for sure that you will be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.
And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.
and say to him, ‘Long life to you, and peace to you and your house and to all that belongs to you.
Ask thy young men, and they will
shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in
thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee,
whatsoever cometh to
thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can afford to your servants and to your son David.’”
But the men were very good unto us, and we were not
hurt, neither missed we any
thing, as long as we were
conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
Yet these men were very good to us. When we were in the field, we were not
harassed, and nothing of ours went missing the whole time we lived among them.
And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let
thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in
thine audience, and hear the words of
thine handmaid.
She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the
blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I
thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with
thine own hand, now let
thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my lord be like Nabal.
And now this blessing which
thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.
Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.
I pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of
thine handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your servant’s
offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the
bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of
thine enemies, them shall he
sling out, as out of the middle of a
sling.
And should someone pursue you and seek your life, then the life of my lord will be bound securely by the LORD your God in the
bundle of the living. But He shall
fling away the lives of your enemies like stones from a
sling.
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath
avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember
thine handmaid.
then my lord will have no
remorse or guilt of conscience over needless
bloodshed and
revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your
maidservant.”
So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to
thine house; see, I have
hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.
Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go home in peace. See, I have
heeded your voice and granted your request.”
But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
In the morning when Nabal was
sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him and he became like a stone.
And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let
thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
She arose, then bowed facedown and said, “Here is your
maidservant, ready to serve and to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”
Then said
Abishai to David, God hath delivered
thine enemy into
thine hand this day: now therefore let me
smite him, I pray thee, with the
spear even to the earth at once, and I will not
smite him the second time.
Abishai said to David, “
Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand. Now, therefore, please let me thrust the
spear through him into the ground with one stroke. I will not need to strike him twice!”
This
thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This
thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
Then said Saul, I have
sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee
harm, because my soul was precious in
thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the
fool, and have
erred exceedingly.
Then Saul replied, “I have
sinned. Come back, David my son. I will never
harm you again, because
today you considered my life precious. I have played the
fool and have committed a grave error!”
Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
Saul said to him, “May you be blessed, David my son. You will
accomplish great
things and will surely prevail.” So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.
And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let me be assigned a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. For why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”
And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to
abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.
So Achish trusted David,
thinking, “Since he has made himself an utter
stench to his people Israel, he will be my servant
forever.”
And Saul
sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this
thing.
Then Saul
swore to her by the LORD: “As surely as the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this.”
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then
dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become
thine enemy?
“Why do you
consult me,” asked Samuel, “since the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy?
