vex a stranger, nor
oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

And if a stranger
sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not
vex him.
When a foreigner resides with you in your land, you must not
oppress him.
How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians
vexed us, and our fathers:
how our fathers went down to Egypt, where we lived many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers,
Vex the Midianites, and
smite them:
“Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.
For they
vex you with their wiles,
wherewith they have
beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of
Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
For they
assailed you
deceitfully when they
seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”
But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides; they will
harass you in the land where you settle.
The LORD shall send upon thee
cursing,
vexation, and
rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast
forsaken me.
The LORD will send curses upon you, confusion and reproof in all to which you put your hand, until you are destroyed and quickly perish because of the wickedness you have committed in
forsaking Him.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.

vexed and
oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the
Amorites, which is in
Gilead.
who that very year
harassed and
oppressed the Israelites, and did so for eighteen years to all the Israelites on the other side of the Jordan in
Gilead, the land of the
Amorites.

vexed unto death;
Finally, after she had pressed him daily with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of
Ammon, and against
Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and
whithersoever he turned himself, he
vexed them.
After Saul had assumed the
kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side—the Moabites, the
Ammonites, the Edomites, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he routed them.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not
hearken unto our voice: how will he then
vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?
On the seventh day the child died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Look, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not
listen to us. So how can we tell him the child is dead? He may even
harm himself.”
And Amnon was so
vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her.
Amnon was sick with
frustration over his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed
implausible for him to do anything to her.
And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is
vexed within her: and the LORD hath
hid it from me, and hath not told me.
When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she
clung to his feet. Gehazi came over to
push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me.”
And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
In those days there was no safety for travelers, because the residents of the lands had many conflicts.

vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they
cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy
manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.
So You delivered them into the hands of enemies who
oppressed them, and in their time of distress they
cried out to You. From heaven You heard them, and in Your great
compassion You gave them deliverers who saved them from the hands of their enemies.
How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the
Almighty, who hath
vexed my soul;
“As surely as God lives, who has deprived me of justice— the
Almighty, who has embittered my soul—
Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and
vex them in his
sore displeasure.
Then He rebukes them in His anger, and terrifies them in His
fury:
Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD,
heal me; for my bones are
vexed.
My soul is also
sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long?
My soul is deeply distressed. How long, O LORD, how long?
All my enemies will be
ashamed and dismayed; they will turn back in sudden disgrace.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, and have found them all to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind.
And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is
vexation of spirit.
So I set my mind to know wisdom and madness and folly; I learned that this, too, is a pursuit of the wind.
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and
vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
Yet when I considered all the works that my hands had accomplished and what I had
toiled to
achieve, I found everything to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind; there was nothing to be gained under the sun.
Therefore I
hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is
grievous unto me: for all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
So I
hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was
grievous to me. For everything is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
For what hath man of all his labour, and of the
vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
For what does a man get for all the
toil and
striving with which he labors under the sun?
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the
sinner he giveth
travail, to gather and to
heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the
sinner He assigns the task of gathering and
accumulating that which he will hand over to one who pleases God. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Again, I considered all
travail, and every right work, that for this a man is
envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and
vexation of spirit.
I saw that all labor and success spring from a man’s
envy of his
neighbor. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with
travail and
vexation of spirit.
Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with
toil and pursuit of the wind.
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not
rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
There is no limit to all the people who were before them. Yet the successor will not be celebrated by those who come even later. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and
vexation of spirit.
Better what the eye can see than the wandering of desire. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:
‘Let us
invade Judah,
terrorize it, and divide it among ourselves. Then we can
install the son of Tabeal over it as king.’
Nevertheless, there will be no more
gloom for those in distress. In the past He humbled the land of
Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the nations:
The
envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the
adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not
envy Judah, and Judah shall not
vex Ephraim.
Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, and the
adversaries of Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will no longer
envy Judah, nor will Judah
harass Ephraim.
From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a
vexation only to understand the report.
As often as it passes through, it will carry you away; it will
sweep through morning after morning, by day and by night.” The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.
But they rebelled, and
vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
But they rebelled and
grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned and became their enemy, and He Himself fought against them.
Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall
howl for
vexation of spirit.
My servants will
shout for joy with a
glad heart, but you will cry out with a heavy heart and
wail with a broken spirit.
Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall
mock thee, which art infamous and much
vexed.
Those near and far will
mock you, O infamous city, full of
turmoil.
In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they
vexed the fatherless and the widow.
Father and mother are treated with contempt. Within your walls the foreign resident is exploited, the fatherless and the widow are
oppressed.
The people of the land have practiced
extortion and committed
robbery. They have
oppressed the poor and
needy and have exploited the foreign resident without justice.
I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.
‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries you do not know.
Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall
bite thee, and
awake that shall
vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?
Will not your creditors suddenly arise and those who
disturb you
awaken? Then you will become their prey.
And, behold, a woman of
Canaan came out of the same coasts, and
cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is
grievously vexed with a devil.
And a
Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is
miserably possessed by a
demon.”
Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and
sore vexed: for
ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and
oft into the water.
“Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering
terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
And they that were
vexed with unclean spirits: and they were
healed.
They had come to hear Him and to be
healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were
healed.
There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick
folks, and them which were
vexed with unclean spirits: and they were
healed every one.
Crowds also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those
tormented by unclean spirits, and all of them were
healed.

About that time, King Herod reached out to
harm some who belonged to the church.
And delivered just Lot,
vexed with the
filthy conversation of the wicked:
and if He
rescued Lot, a righteous man distressed by the
depraved conduct of the lawless
(For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing,
vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was
tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—
And in the eighth night was my heart
vexed within me again, and I began to speak before the most High.
After seven days I sat upon the grass, and my heart was
vexed within me, like as before:
And she said unto me, Sir, let me alone, that I may
bewail myself, and add unto my sorrow, for I am
sore vexed in my mind, and brought very low.
And he said unto him, Touching the heart and the liver, if a devil or an evil spirit trouble any, we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman, and the party shall be no more
vexed.
Whether they were absent or present, they were
vexed alike.
Add not more trouble to an heart that is
vexed; and
defer not to give to him that is in need.
O death, how bitter is the
remembrance of thee to a man that liveth at rest in his possessions, unto the man that hath nothing to
vex him, and that hath prosperity in all things:
yea, unto him that is yet able to receive meat!
O death, acceptable is thy sentence unto the
needy, and unto him whose strength faileth, that is now in the last age, and is
vexed with all things, and to him that despaireth, and hath lost
patience!
But the soul that is greatly
vexed, which goeth
stooping and feeble, and the eyes that fail, and the
hungry soul, will give thee praise and righteousness, O Lord.
For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that
vexed his people.
And when he had compassed the city round about, and joined ships close to the town on the sea side, he
vexed the city by land and by sea, neither suffered he any to go out or in.

vex the nation: at Jerusalem, Philip, for his country a
Phrygian, and for manners more barbarous than he that set him there;
