And Jacob rent his clothes, and put
sackcloth upon his loins, and
mourned for his son many days.
And the curious
girdle of the
ephod, which is upon it, shall be of the same, according to the work thereof; even of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine
twined linen.
And two other rings of gold thou shalt make, and shalt put them on the two sides of the
ephod underneath, toward the
forepart thereof, over against the other coupling thereof, above the curious
girdle of the
ephod.
Make two additional gold rings and
attach them to the bottom of the two shoulder pieces of the
ephod, on its front, near its
seam just above its
woven waistband.
The rings of the breastpiece shall be
tied to the rings of the
ephod with a cord of blue yarn, so that the breastpiece is above the
waistband of the
ephod and does not
swing out from the
ephod.
And thou shalt make them linen
breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach:
Make linen undergarments to cover their bare flesh, extending from
waist to
thigh.
And the curious
girdle of his
ephod, that was upon it, was of the same, according to the work thereof; of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine
twined linen; as the LORD commanded Moses.
And they made two other golden rings, and put them on the two sides of the
ephod underneath, toward the
forepart of it, over against the other coupling thereof, above the curious
girdle of the
ephod.
They made two additional gold rings and attached them to the bottom of the two shoulder pieces of the
ephod, on its front, near the
seam just above its
woven waistband.
And they did bind the
breastplate by his rings unto the rings of the
ephod with a lace of blue, that it might be above the curious
girdle of the
ephod, and that the
breastplate might not be loosed from the
ephod; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Then they
tied the rings of the breastpiece to the rings of the
ephod with a cord of blue yarn, so that the breastpiece was above the
waistband of the
ephod and would not
swing out from the
ephod, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Moreover thou knowest also what
Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto
Abner the son of
Ner, and unto
Amasa the son of Jether, whom he
slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his
girdle that was about his loins, and in his
shoes that were on his feet.
Moreover, you know what
Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to
Abner son of
Ner and
Amasa son of Jether, the two commanders of the armies of Israel. He killed them in peacetime to
avenge the blood of war. He
stained with the blood of war the belt around his
waist and the
sandals on his feet.
And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!
And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put
sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel:
peradventure he will save thy life.
Then the servants of Ben-
hadad said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful. Let us go out to the king of Israel with
sackcloth around our
waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will
spare your life.”
So they
girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-
hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
So with
sackcloth around their
waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-
hadad says, ‘Please
spare my life.’” And the king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
And they answered him, He was an
hairy man, and
girt with a
girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is
Elijah the Tishbite.
“He was a
hairy man,” they answered, “with a leather belt around his
waist.” “It was
Elijah the Tishbite,” said the king.
And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!
He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a
girdle.
He loosens the bonds placed by kings and fastens a belt around their waists.
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh,
And righteousness shall be the
girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the
girdle of his
reins.
Righteousness will be the belt around His hips, and faithfulness the
sash around His
waist.
At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the
sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy
shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and
barefoot.
the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go, remove the
sackcloth from your
waist and the
sandals from your feet.” And Isaiah did so, walking around naked and
barefoot.
Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and
gird sackcloth upon your loins.
Thus saith the LORD unto me, Go and get thee a linen
girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.
This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and
buy yourself a linen loincloth and put it around your
waist, but do not let it touch water.”
So I got a
girdle according to the word of the LORD, and put it on my loins.
So I bought a loincloth as the LORD had
instructed me, and I put it around my
waist.
For as the
girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to
cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s
waist, so I have made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah
cling to Me, declares the LORD, so that they might be My people for My
renown and praise and glory. But they did not
listen.
And I saw as the colour of
amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even
downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.
From what seemed to be His
waist up, I saw a
gleam like
amber, with what looked like fire within it all around. And from what seemed to be His
waist down, I saw what looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded Him.
Then I
beheld, and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire: from the appearance of his loins even
downward, fire; and from his loins even upward, as the appearance of brightness, as the colour of
amber.
Then I looked and saw a figure like that of a man. From His
waist down His appearance was like fire, and from His
waist up He was as bright as the
gleam of
amber.
Girded with girdles upon their loins, exceeding in
dyed attire upon their heads, all of them princes to look to, after the manner of the Babylonians of
Chaldea, the land of their
nativity:
wearing belts on their
waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like officers of the Babylonians in
Chaldea, the land of their birth.
They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen
breeches upon their loins; they shall not
gird themselves with any thing that causeth
sweat.
They are to wear linen turbans on their heads and linen undergarments around their
waists. They must not wear anything that makes them
perspire.
Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.
Then he measured off a thousand cubits and led me through
knee-deep water. Again he measured a thousand cubits and led me through
waist-deep water.
Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were
girded with fine gold of Uphaz:
I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist.
And the same John had his
raiment of
camel’s hair, and a
leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
John
wore a garment of
camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his
waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
And John was clothed with
camel’s hair, and with a
girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
John was clothed in
camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his
waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
He riseth from
supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a
towel, and
girded himself.
So He got up from the
supper, laid aside His outer garments, and
wrapped a
towel around His
waist.
Stand therefore, having your loins
girt about with truth, and having on the
breastplate of righteousness;
