And I gave my heart to seek and search out by
wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this
sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised
therewith.
And I set my mind to seek and
explore by
wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have
gotten more
wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem:
yea, my heart had great experience of
wisdom and knowledge.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown and increased in wisdom beyond all those before me who were over Jerusalem, and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”
And I gave my heart to know
wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is
vexation of spirit.
So I set my mind to know wisdom and madness and folly; I learned that this, too, is a pursuit of the wind.
For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow, and as knowledge grows, grief increases.
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet
acquainting mine heart with
wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with
wisdom—until I could see what was
worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.
So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Then I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what more can the king’s successor do than what has already been accomplished?
Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
And I saw that wisdom exceeds folly, just as light exceeds darkness:
The
wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the
fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
The
wise man has eyes in his head, but the
fool walks in darkness. Yet I also came to
realize that one fate overcomes them both.
Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the
fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more
wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
So I said to myself, “The fate of the
fool will also
befall me. What then have I gained by being
wise?” And I said to myself that this too is
futile.
For there is no
remembrance of the
wise more than of the
fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the
wise man? as the
fool.
For there is no lasting
remembrance of the
wise, just as with the
fool, seeing that both will be forgotten in the days to come.
Alas, the
wise man will die just like the
fool!
And who knoweth whether he shall be a
wise man or a
fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself
wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
And who knows whether that man will be
wise or
foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have worked
skillfully under the sun. This too is
futile.
For there is a man whose labour is in
wisdom, and in knowledge, and in
equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
When there is a man who has labored with
wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it, this too is
futile and a great evil.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight
wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the
sinner he giveth
travail, to gather and to
heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives
wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the
sinner He assigns the task of gathering and
accumulating that which he will hand over to one who pleases God. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Better is a poor and a
wise child than an old and
foolish king, who will no more be
admonished.
Better is a poor but
wise youth than an old but
foolish king who no longer knows how to take a
warning.
For what hath the
wise more than the
fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
What advantage, then, has the
wise man over the
fool? What gain comes to the poor man who knows how to conduct himself before others?
