Because they have committed
villany in Israel, and have committed
adultery with their neighbours’
wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the LORD.
For they have committed an
outrage in Israel by
committing adultery with the
wives of their neighbors and speaking lies in My name, which I did not command them to do. I am He who knows, and I am a witness, declares the LORD.”
Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;
And we have obeyed the voice of our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded us. So we have not
drunk wine all our lives—neither we nor our
wives nor our sons and daughters.
So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.
All your
wives and children will be brought out to the Chaldeans. And you
yourself will not escape their
grasp, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned down.”
Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?
Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers and of the kings of Judah and their wives, as well as the wickedness that you and your wives committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah,
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your
wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have
vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely
accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: As for you and your
wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands your words: ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made to burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Go
ahead, then, do what you have promised! Keep your vows!
Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away: but they shall take maidens of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that had a priest before.
And they shall not marry a widow or a
divorced woman, but must marry a virgin of the descendants of the house of Israel, or a widow of a priest.
Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father
Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his
wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
Under the influence of the wine,
Belshazzar gave orders to bring in the gold and silver vessels that
Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king could drink from them, along with his nobles, his
wives, and his concubines.
Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his
wives, and his concubines,
drank in them.
Thus they brought in the gold vessels that had been taken from the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king
drank from them, along with his nobles, his
wives, and his concubines.
But hast lifted up
thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy
wives, and thy concubines, have
drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not
glorified:
Instead, you have
exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you
drank wine from them with your nobles,
wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you have failed to
glorify the God who holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.
And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their
wives; and the lions had the
mastery of them, and
brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
At the command of the king, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought and thrown into the den of lions—they and their children and
wives. And before they had reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and
crushed all their bones.
And the land shall
mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their
wives apart; the family of the house of
Nathan apart, and their
wives apart;
The land will
mourn, each clan on its own: the clan of the house of David and their
wives, the clan of the house of
Nathan and their
wives,
The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart;
the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shimei and their wives,
All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.
and all the remaining clans and their wives.
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to
divorce your
wives because of your hardness of heart; but it was not this way from the beginning.
They did eat, they
drank, they married
wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
People were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, up to the day
Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we
kneeled down on the shore, and prayed.
But when our time there had ended, we set out on our journey. All the disciples, with their
wives and children, accompanied us out of the city and
knelt down on the
beach to pray with us.
But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
What I am saying, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none;
Wives, submit
yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Wives, submit
yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Even so must their
wives be grave, not slanderers,
sober, faithful in all things.
In the same way, the women must be
dignified, not slanderers, but temperate and faithful in all things.
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
Wives, in the same way, submit
yourselves to your husbands, so that even if they refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the
behavior of their
wives Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
Husbands, in the same way, treat your
wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the
gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
After this were the principal men of the families chosen according to their tribes, to go up with their wives and sons and daughters, with their menservants and maidservants, and their cattle.
Let us make an oath to the Lord, that we will put away all our wives, which we have taken of the heathen, with their children,
So
Esdras arose up, and said unto them, Ye have
transgressed the law in marrying strange
wives, thereby to increase the sins of Israel.
Therefore let the rulers of the multitude stay, and let all them of our habitations that have strange wives come at the time appointed,
So their cause that held strange wives was brought to an end in the first day of the first month.

And they gave their hands to put away their
wives and to offer rams to make
reconcilement for their errors.

Our
psaltery is laid on the ground, our song is put to silence, our
rejoicing is at an end, the light of our
candlestick is put out, the ark of our covenant is
spoiled, our holy things are
defiled, and the name that is called upon us is almost
profaned: our children are put to shame, our priests are burnt, our Levites are gone into captivity, our virgins are
defiled, and our
wives ravished; our righteous men carried away, our little ones destroyed, our young men are brought in
bondage, and our strong men are become weak;
Beware of all
whoredom, my son, and chiefly take a wife of the seed of thy fathers, and take not a strange woman to wife, which is not of thy father’s tribe: for we are the children of the prophets, Noe, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: remember, my son, that our fathers from the beginning, even that they all married
wives of their own kindred, and were blessed in their children, and their seed shall
inherit the land.
Both they, and their
wives and their children, and their cattle, and every stranger and
hireling, and their servants bought with money, put
sackcloth upon their loins.
And
cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly, that he would not give their children for a prey, and their
wives for a
spoil, and the cities of their inheritance to destruction, and the sanctuary to
profanation and reproach, and for the nations to
rejoice at.
So they and their wives and their children shall be consumed with fire, and before the sword come against them, they shall be overthrown in the streets where they dwell.
For it is better for us to be made a
spoil unto them, than to die for
thirst: for we will be his servants, that our souls may live, and not see the death of our infants before our eyes, nor our
wives nor our children to die.
And hast given their
wives for a prey, and their daughters to be
captives, and all their spoils to be divided among thy
dear children; which were moved with thy zeal, and
abhorred the
pollution of their blood, and called upon thee for aid: O God, O my God, hear me also a widow.
Therefore have we commanded, that all they that are
signified in writing unto you by Aman, who is ordained over the affairs, and is next unto us, shall all, with their
wives and children, be utterly destroyed by the sword of their enemies, without all mercy and
pity, the
fourteenth day of the
twelfth month
Adar of this present year:
Their
wives are
foolish, and their children wicked:
As for the things that are sacrificed unto them, their priests sell and
abuse; in like manner their
wives lay up part thereof in salt; but unto the poor and
impotent they give nothing of it.
The priests also take off their garments, and
clothe their
wives and children.
Now the priests of
Bel were
threescore and ten, beside their
wives and children. And the king went with Daniel into the temple of
Bel.
Now in the night came the priests with their
wives and children, as they were
wont to do, and did eat and drink up all.
And took the priests with their wives and children, who shewed him the privy doors, where they came in, and consumed such things as were upon the table.
Both they, and their children, and their
wives; and their cattle; because afflictions increased
sore upon them.

slew them, with their
wives and children and their cattle, to the number of a thousand people.
They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our
wives and children, and to
spoil us:
But as for such as were building houses, or had
betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.
Yea, all our brethren that were in the places of Tobie are put to death: their
wives and their children also they have carried away
captives, and borne away their stuff; and they have destroyed there about a thousand men.
And those that were in
Galilee, and in Arbattis, with their
wives and their children, and all that they had, took he away with him, and brought them into
Judea with great joy.

Judas gathered together all the Israelites that were in the country of Galaad, from the least unto the greatest, even their
wives, and their children, and their stuff, a very great host, to the end they might come into the land of
Judea.
And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them
slew many of them, and carried away
captives their
wives and their children, and
spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:
Doubtless I will
avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our
wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very
malice.

climbed upon the walls with their
wives and children, and
cried with a loud voice,

Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their
wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no
hurt.

wives, and their children, their brethren, and
folks, was in least account with them: but the greatest and principal fear was for the holy temple.
