Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?
Surely you have heard what the kings of
Assyria have done to all the other countries,
devoting them to destruction. Will you then be
spared?
Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,
Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste these nations and their lands.
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to
Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against
Sennacherib king of
Assyria I have heard.
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to
Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning
Sennacherib king of
Assyria.
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of
Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of
Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and
smote in the camp of the
Assyrians an hundred
fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
And that very night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
So
Sennacherib king of
Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to
Nineveh and stayed there.
And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for My sake and for the sake of My servant David.’”
In his days Pharaoh-nechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of
Assyria to the river Euphrates: and king
Josiah went against him; and he
slew him at
Megiddo, when he had seen him.
At the end of
Josiah’s reign, Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt marched up to help the king of
Assyria at the Euphrates River. King
Josiah went out to
confront him, but Neco faced him and killed him at
Megiddo.
And Gedaliah
sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.
And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men,
assuring them, “Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.”
The sons of
Shem;
Elam, and
Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and
Aram, and
Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and
Meshech.
And the sons of Jeconiah; Assir, Salathiel his son,
The descendants of Jeconiah the
captive:
Beerah his son, whom Tilgath-pilneser king of
Assyria carried away
captive: he was prince of the Reubenites.
and Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria carried into exile.
And they took away their cattle; of their camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of
asses two thousand, and of men an hundred thousand.
They seized the
livestock of the Hagrites—50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, and 2,000
donkeys. They also took 100,000
captives,
And the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of
Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of
Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
So the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of
Assyria (that is, Tiglath-pileser king of
Assyria) to take the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh into exile. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan, where they remain to this day.
Elkanah his son, and Ebiasaph his son, and Assir his son,
Amminadab his son,
Korah his son,
Assir his son, Elkanah his son, Ebiasaph his son,
Assir his son,
The son of Tahath, the son of
Assir, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah,
the son of Tahath, the son of
Assir, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah,
Their brethren also the Levites were appointed unto all manner of service of the tabernacle of the house of God.
Their fellow Levites were assigned to every kind of service of the tabernacle, the house of God.
Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot.
Now these were the territories assigned to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clan for their settlements, because the first lot fell to them:
And they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of
Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, these cities, which are called by their names.
They
assigned by lot the cities named above from the tribes of Judah,
Simeon, and Benjamin.
And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the LORD, were keepers of the entry.
Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah, and his relatives from the Korahites were
assigned to guard the thresholds of the Tent, just as their fathers had been
assigned to guard the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD.
So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.
So they and their descendants were assigned to guard the gates of the house of the LORD—the house called the Tent.
Moreover they that were
nigh them, even unto
Issachar and
Zebulun and
Naphtali, brought bread on
asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of
raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.
And their neighbors from as far away as
Issachar,
Zebulun, and
Naphtali came bringing food on
donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen—abundant supplies of flour, fig cakes and
raisin cakes, wine and oil, oxen and sheep. Indeed, there was joy in Israel.
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:
And he said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if this is of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers in all the land of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in their cities and pasturelands, so that they may join us.
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
And because this proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to it.
So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath-jearim.
So David
assembled all Israel, from the River Shihor in Egypt to Lebo-
hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto his place, which he had prepared for it.
And David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it.
And David assembled the children of Aaron, and the Levites:
Then he gathered together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:
And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one
reckoning, according to their father’s house.
Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family and received a single
assignment.
Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the
purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;
but their duty was to
assist the descendants of Aaron with the service of the house of the LORD, being responsible for the courts and chambers, the
purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God,
Over the first course for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.
Jashobeam son of Zabdiel was in charge of the first division, which was assigned the first month. There were 24,000 men in his division.
Over the camels also was Obil the
Ishmaelite: and over the
asses was Jehdeiah the Meronothite:
Obil the
Ishmaelite was in charge of the camels. Jehdeiah the Meronothite was in charge of the
donkeys.
And David
assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the captains over the thousands, and captains over the hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possession of the king, and of his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the
valiant men, unto Jerusalem.
Now David summoned all the leaders of Israel to Jerusalem: the leaders of the tribes, the leaders of the divisions in the king’s service, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and cattle of the king and his sons, along with the court officials and mighty men—every mighty man of
valor.
Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the LORD, and in the
audience of our God, keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD your God: that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever.
So now in the sight of all Israel, the
assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God, keep and seek out all the commandments of the LORD your God, so that you may possess this good land and leave it as an inheritance to your descendants
forever.
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Then King David said to the whole assembly, “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great because this palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all the
assembly and said: “May You be blessed, O LORD, God of our father Israel, from
everlasting to
everlasting.
And David said to all the congregation, Now
bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the LORD, and the king.
Then David said to the whole
assembly, “Blessed be the LORD your God.” So the whole
assembly blessed the LORD, the God of their fathers. They bowed down and paid
homage to the LORD and to the king.
So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at
Gibeon; for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
And Solomon and the whole
assembly went to the high place at
Gibeon because it was the
location of God’s Tent of Meeting, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
Moreover the
brasen altar, that Bezaleel the son of
Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the tabernacle of the LORD: and Solomon and the congregation sought unto it.
But the bronze altar made by Bezalel son of
Uri, the son of Hur, was in
Gibeon before the tabernacle of the LORD. So Solomon and the
assembly inquired of Him there.
Then Solomon
assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is
Zion.
At that time Solomon
assembled in Jerusalem the elders of Israel—all the
tribal heads and family leaders of the Israelites—to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from
Zion, the City of David.
Wherefore all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto the king in the feast which was in the seventh month.
So all the men of Israel came together to the king at the feast in the seventh month.
Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen, which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
There, before the ark, King Solomon and the whole congregation of Israel who had assembled with him sacrificed so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered.
And the king turned his face, and blessed the whole congregation of Israel: and all the congregation of Israel stood.
And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there, the king turned around and blessed them all
And he stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands:
Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands.
For Solomon had made a
brasen scaffold, of five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and
kneeled down upon his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven,
Now Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had placed it in the middle of the
courtyard. He stood on it,
knelt down before the whole
assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven,
Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great congregation, from the entering in of
Hamath unto the river of Egypt.
So at that time Solomon and all Israel with him—a very great
assembly of people from Lebo-
hamath to the
Brook of Egypt—kept the feast for seven days.
And in the eighth day they made a solemn
assembly: for they kept the
dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.
On the eighth day they held a solemn
assembly, for the
dedication of the altar had lasted seven days, and the feast seven days more.
And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and
Manasseh, and out of
Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
And he
assembled all Judah and Benjamin, along with those from the tribes of Ephraim,
Manasseh, and
Simeon who had settled among them, for great numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
Therefore the king of Israel gathered together of prophets four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And they said, Go up; for God will deliver it into the king’s hand.
So the king of Israel
assembled the prophets, four hundred men, and asked them, “Should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up,” they replied, “and God will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
And the
messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him, saying, Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one
assent; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And
Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court,
Then
Jehoshaphat stood in the
assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD in front of the new
courtyard Then upon Jahaziel the son of
Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a
Levite of the sons of
Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;
Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of
Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a
Levite from
Asaph’s descendants, as he stood in the midst of the
assembly.
And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.
On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they blessed the LORD. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.
And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the LORD hath said of the sons of David.
the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. “Behold, the king’s son!” said Jehoiada. “He must reign, just as the LORD promised concerning the descendants of David.
And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?”
Moreover
Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle
spear and shield.
Then
Amaziah gathered the people of Judah and
assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. And he numbered those twenty years of age or older throughout Judah and Benjamin and found 300,000 chosen men able to serve in the army, bearing the
spear and shield.
Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men, that went out to war by bands, according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the ruler, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains.
Uzziah had an army ready for battle that went out to war by
assigned divisions, as recorded by Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officers.
So the armed men left the
captives and the
spoil before the princes and all the congregation.
So the armed men left the
captives and the
plunder before the leaders and all the
assembly.
And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the
captives, and with the
spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and
arrayed them, and
shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and
anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon
asses, and brought them to
Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.
Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the
captives, and provided from the
plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them
sandals and food and drink,
anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on
donkeys. So they brought them to
Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.
At that time did king
Ahaz send unto the kings of
Assyria to help him.
At that time King
Ahaz sent for help from the king of
Assyria.
And Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.
For
Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of
Assyria: but he helped him not.
Although
Ahaz had taken a portion from the house of the LORD, from the royal palace, and from the princes and had presented it to the king of
Assyria, it did not help him.
And they gathered their brethren, and
sanctified themselves, and came, according to the commandment of the king, by the words of the LORD, to
cleanse the house of the LORD.
When they had
assembled their brothers and consecrated themselves, they went in to
cleanse the house of the LORD, according to the command of the king by the words of the LORD.
And they brought forth the he goats for the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them:
Then they brought the goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, who laid their hands on them.
And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers
sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the burnt offering was finished.
The whole assembly was worshiping, the singers were singing, and the trumpeters were playing. All this continued until the burnt offering was completed.
Then
Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated
yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and
thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and
thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings.
Then
Hezekiah said, “Now that you have consecrated
yourselves to the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and
thank offerings to the house of the LORD.” So the
assembly brought sacrifices and
thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing brought burnt offerings.
And the number of the burnt offerings, which the congregation brought, was
threescore and ten bullocks, an hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD.
The number of burnt offerings the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams, and two hundred lambs; all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD.
For the king had taken counsel, and his princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the
passover in the second month.
For the king and his officials and the whole
assembly in Jerusalem had decided to keep the
Passover in the second month,
And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation.
This proposal pleased the king and the whole assembly.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of
Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of
Assyria.
And there
assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast of
unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation.
In the second month, a very great
assembly gathered in Jerusalem to
celebrate the Feast of
Unleavened Bread.
For there were many in the congregation that were not
sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to
sanctify them unto the LORD.
Since there were many in the
assembly who had not consecrated themselves, the Levites were in charge of slaughtering the
Passover lambs for every unclean person to
consecrate the lambs to the LORD.
And
Hezekiah spake
comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.
And
Hezekiah encouraged all the Levites who performed
skillfully before the LORD. For seven days they
ate their
assigned portion, sacrificing
fellowship offerings and giving
thanks to the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And the whole
assembly took counsel to keep other seven days: and they kept other seven days with
gladness.
The whole assembly agreed to observe seven more days, so they observed seven days with joy.
For
Hezekiah king of Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks and seven thousand sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks and ten thousand sheep: and a great number of priests
sanctified themselves.
For
Hezekiah king of Judah contributed a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep for the
assembly, and the officials contributed a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep for the
assembly, and a great number of priests consecrated themselves.
And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah,
rejoiced.
Then the whole
assembly of Judah
rejoiced along with the priests and Levites and the whole
assembly that had come from Israel, including the foreigners who had come from Israel and those who lived in Judah.
And to the
genealogy of all their little ones, their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, through all the congregation: for in their set office they
sanctified themselves in
holiness:
The
genealogy included all the little ones, wives, sons, and daughters in the whole
assembly. For they had faithfully consecrated themselves as holy.
After these things, and the establishment thereof,
Sennacherib king of
Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and
encamped against the
fenced cities, and thought to
win them for himself.
After all these acts of faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of
Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, intending to
conquer them for himself.
So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the
brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of
Assyria come, and find much water?
Many people
assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings of
Assyria come and find
plenty of water?” they said.
Be strong and
courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of
Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:
“Be strong and
courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged before the king of
Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater One with us than with him.
After this did
Sennacherib king of
Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against
Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of
Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
“This is what
Sennacherib king of
Assyria says: What is the basis of your confidence, that you remain in Jerusalem under siege?
Is not
Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and
thirst when he says, ‘The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of
Assyria?’
Then they
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to
affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
Then the
Assyrians called out loudly in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to
frighten and
terrify them in order to capture the city.
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of
Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own
bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of
Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him down with the sword.
Thus the LORD saved
Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of
Sennacherib the king of
Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.
So the LORD saved
Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hands of King
Sennacherib of
Assyria and all the others, and He gave them rest on every side.
Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take
heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to leave the land that I assigned to your fathers, if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses—all the laws, statutes, and judgments.”
Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of
Assyria, which took
Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with
fetters, and carried him to Babylon.
So the LORD brought against them the military commanders of the king of
Assyria, who captured
Manasseh, put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze
shackles, and took him to Babylon.
And
whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the
freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.
And let every
survivor, wherever he lives, be
assisted by the men of that region with silver, gold, goods, and
livestock, along with a
freewill offering for the house of God in Jerusalem.’”
The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and
threescore,
The whole assembly numbered 42,360,
Their camels, four hundred thirty and five; their
asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.
And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.
By the seventh month, the Israelites had settled in their towns, and the people assembled as one man in Jerusalem.
Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings
thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.
Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his
associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the
remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.
In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their
associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to
supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of
Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of
Assyria, who brought us here.”
And in the days of
Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto
Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the
Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the
Syrian tongue.
And in the days of
Artaxerxes king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his
associates wrote a letter to
Artaxerxes. It was written in
Aramaic and then translated.
Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the
scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
From Rehum the commander, Shimshai the
scribe, and the rest of their
associates—the judges and officials over Tripolis, Persia, Erech and Babylon, the Elamites of
Susa,
Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the
scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
Then the king sent this reply: To Rehum the commander, Shimshai the
scribe, and the rest of your
associates living in Samaria and elsewhere in the region west of the Euphrates: Greetings.
Now when the copy of king
Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the
scribe, and their companions, they went up in
haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
When the text of the letter from King
Artaxerxes was read to Rehum, Shimshai the
scribe, and their
associates, they went immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and
forcibly stopped them.
At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?
At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates went to the Jews and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
