For thine arrows stick fast in me,
and thy hand presseth me
sore.
For Your arrows have pierced me deeply, and Your hand has pressed down on me.
My wounds are foul
and festering because of my sinful folly.
I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go
mourning all the day long.
I am bent
and brought low; all day long I go about
mourning.
For my loins are filled with a
loathsome disease:
and there is no soundness in my flesh.
For my loins are full of burning pain, and no soundness remains in my body.
I am feeble
and sore broken: I have
roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.
Lord, all my desire is before thee;
and my
groaning is not
hid from thee.
O Lord, my every desire is before You; my
groaning is not hidden from You.
My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.
My heart pounds, my strength fails,
and even the light of my eyes has
faded.
My beloved
and friends
shun my disease,
and my
kinsmen stand at a distance.
They also that seek after my life lay snares for me:
and they that seek my
hurt speak
mischievous things,
and imagine deceits all the day long.
Those who seek my life lay snares; those who wish me
harm speak destruction,
plotting deceit all day long.
But I, as a
deaf man, heard not;
and I was as a
dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
But like a
deaf man, I do not hear;
and like a
mute man, I do not open my mouth.
Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.
I am like a man who cannot hear, whose mouth offers no reply.
For I am ready to
halt,
and my sorrow is continually before me.
For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever with me.
But mine enemies are lively,
and they are strong:
and they that
hate me
wrongfully are multiplied.
Many are my enemies without cause,
and many
hate me without reason.
I was
dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good;
and my sorrow was
stirred.
I was speechless
and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good,
and my sorrow was
stirred.
LORD, make me to know mine end,
and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how
frail I am.
“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.
Behold, thou hast made my days as an
handbreadth;
and mine age is as nothing before thee:
verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.
Selah.
You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths,
and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath.
Selah Surely every man walketh in a vain
shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches,
and knoweth not who shall gather them.
Surely every man goes about like a
phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will
haul them away.
And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.
And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
When thou with rebukes
dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to
consume away like a
moth: surely every man is vanity.
Selah.
Hear my prayer, O LORD,
and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee,
and a
sojourner, as all my fathers were.
Hear my prayer, O LORD,
and give ear to my cry for help; do not be
deaf to my
weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.
O
spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence,
and be no more.
Turn Your
gaze away from me, that I may again be
cheered before I depart
and am no more.”
I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up also out of an
horrible pit, out of the
miry clay,
and set my feet upon a rock,
and established my goings.
He lifted me up from the pit of
despair, out of the
miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock,
and made my footsteps firm.
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
He put a new song in my mouth, a
hymn of praise to our God. Many will see
and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.
Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who
lapse into
falsehood.
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done,
and the plans You have for us— none can compare to You— if I
proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.
Sacrifice
and offering thou
didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering
and sin offering hast thou not required.
Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but my ears You have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require.
I have not
hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness
and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness
and thy truth from the great congregation.
I have not covered up Your righteousness in my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and salvation; I have not concealed Your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly.
Withhold not thou thy tender
mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness
and thy truth continually preserve me.
O LORD, do not
withhold Your mercy from me; Your loving devotion
and faithfulness will always guard me.
For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine
iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.
For evils without number
surround me; my sins have overtaken me, so that I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart has failed within me.
Let them be
ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward
and put to shame that wish me evil.
Let all those that seek thee
rejoice and be
glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be
magnified.
May all who seek You
rejoice and be
glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, “The LORD be
magnified!”
But I am poor
and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help
and my deliverer; make no
tarrying, O my God.
But I am poor
and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my helper
and deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
The LORD will preserve him,
and keep him alive;
and he shall be blessed upon the earth:
and thou
wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.
The LORD will protect
and preserve him; He will
bless him in the land
and refuse to surrender him to the will of his foes.
The LORD will
sustain him on his bed of illness
and restore him from his bed of sickness.
Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish?
My enemies say with
malice: “When will he die
and be forgotten?”
And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it.
An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.
“A
vile disease has been poured into him; he will never get up from where he lies!”
But thou, O LORD, be
merciful unto me,
and raise me up, that I may requite them.
But You, O LORD, be
gracious to me
and raise me up, that I may repay them.
And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine
integrity,
and settest me before thy face for ever.
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear in God’s presence?
My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
My tears have been my food both day and night, while men ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”
When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy
and praise, with a multitude that kept
holyday.
These things come to mind as I pour out my soul: how I walked with the multitude, leading the
procession to the house of God with shouts of joy
and praise.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
Why are you
downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence.
O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
O my God, my soul despairs within me. Therefore I remember You from the land of Jordan
and the peaks of
Hermon— even from Mount Mizar.
Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
Deep calls to deep in the
roar of Your waterfalls; all Your breakers
and waves have rolled over me.
Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the
daytime,
and in the night his song shall be with me,
and my prayer unto the God of my life.
The LORD decrees His loving devotion by day, and at night His song is with me as a prayer to the God of my life.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
Why are you
downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my
Savior and my God.
Judge me, O God,
and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the
deceitful and unjust man.
O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
Send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your holy mountain, and to the place where You dwell.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
Why are you
downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my
Savior and my God.
How thou
didst drive out the heathen with thy hand,
and plantedst them; how thou
didst afflict the people,
and cast them out.
With Your hand You drove out the nations
and planted our fathers there; You
crushed the peoples
and cast them out.
For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
But thou hast saved us from our enemies,
and hast put them to shame that
hated us.
For You save us from our enemies; You put those who
hate us to shame.
In God we
boast all the day long,
and praise thy name for ever.
Selah.
But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy:
and they which
hate us
spoil for themselves.
Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
You have given us up as sheep to be
devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
Thou sellest thy people for
nought,
and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.
You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a
scorn and a
derision to them that are round about us.
You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a
mockery and derision to those around us.
My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
For the voice of him that reproacheth
and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy
and avenger.
Though thou hast
sore broken us in the place of
dragons,
and covered us with the shadow of death.
But You have
crushed us in the
lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
Wherefore hidest thou thy face,
and forgettest our
affliction and our oppression?
Rise up; be our help!
Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
Gird thy sword upon thy
thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory
and thy majesty.
And in thy majesty
ride prosperously because of truth
and meekness and righteousness;
and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.
Thy throne, O God, is for ever
and ever: the
sceptre of thy kingdom is a right
sceptre.
Your throne, O God, endures
forever and ever,
and justice is the
scepter of Your kingdom.
Thou lovest righteousness,
and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath
anointed thee with the oil of
gladness above thy fellows.
You have loved righteousness
and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has
anointed you above your companions with the oil of joy.
All thy garments smell of
myrrh,
and aloes,
and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee
glad.
Hearken, O daughter,
and consider,
and incline thine ear;
forget also thine own people,
and thy father’s house;
So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.
and the king will desire your beauty; bow to him, for he is your lord.
And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour.
The Daughter of Tyre will come with a gift; men of wealth will seek your favor.
With
gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king’s palace.
They are led in with joy
and gladness; they enter the palace of the king.
I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.
I will
commemorate your name through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you
forever and ever.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed
and the mountains are
toppled into the depths of the seas,
Though the waters thereof
roar and be troubled, though the mountains
shake with the swelling thereof.
Selah.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
God is within her; she will not be moved. God will help her when morning dawns.
He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow,
and cutteth the
spear in
sunder; he burneth the
chariot in the fire.
He makes wars to cease throughout the earth; He breaks the bow
and shatters the
spear; He burns the shields in the fire.
Be still,
and know that I am God: I will be
exalted among the heathen, I will be
exalted in the earth.
“Be still
and know that I am God; I will be
exalted among the nations, I will be
exalted over the earth.”
He shall
subdue the people under us,
and the nations under our feet.
He subdues nations beneath us, and peoples under our feet.
Great is the LORD,
and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his
holiness.
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, His holy mountain.
They saw it,
and so they
marvelled; they were troubled,
and hasted away.
They saw
and were
astounded; they fled in terror.
Fear took hold upon them there,
and pain, as of a woman in
travail.
Walk about
Zion,
and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.
For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
For this God is our God
forever and ever; He will be our guide even till death.
Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
both low and high, rich and poor alike.
My mouth shall speak of wisdom;
and the
meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
My mouth will impart wisdom,
and the
meditation of my heart will bring understanding.
They that trust in their wealth,
and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
They trust in their wealth
and boast in their great riches.
(For the
redemption of their soul is precious,
and it ceaseth for ever:)
For the
redemption of his soul is costly,
and never can payment suffice,
That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
that he should live on
forever and not see decay.
For he
seeth that wise men die, likewise the
fool and the
brutish person perish,
and leave their wealth to others.
For it is clear that wise men die,
and the
foolish and the senseless both perish
and leave their wealth to others.
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
Their graves are their eternal homes— their dwellings for endless generations— even though their lands were their namesakes.
Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them;
and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;
and their beauty shall
consume in the grave from their dwelling.
Like sheep they are destined for
Sheol. Death will be their
shepherd. The upright will rule them in the morning,
and their form will decay in
Sheol, far from their lofty abode.
Though while he lived he blessed his soul:
and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to
thyself.
Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul—
and men praise you when you
prosper—
Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks
and summons the earth from where the sun rises to where it sets.
