And when they
came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of
Canaan, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of
Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.
And they
came unto the children of

And it
came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and
stricken in age.
A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old and well along in years,
And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye
came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with
chariots and
horsemen unto the Red sea.

chariots and
horsemen as far as the Red Sea.
And it
came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of
Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
Some time later, Joshua son of
Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110.
Now after the death of Joshua it
came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the
Canaanites first, to fight against them?
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the
Canaanites?”

And an angel of the LORD
came up from
Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I
sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
Now the angel of the LORD went up from
Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you,
And it
came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and
wept.
When the angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and
wept.
And it
came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And the Spirit of the LORD
came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
The Spirit of the LORD
came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
And the
haft also went in after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so that he could not draw the
dagger out of his
belly; and the
dirt came out.
When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
After Ehud was gone,
Eglon’s servants
came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “He must be
relieving himself in the cool room,” they said.
And it
came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites
came down with him from the hills, and he became their leader.
And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which
slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox
goad: and he also delivered Israel.
After Ehud
came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines with an
oxgoad.
And she dwelt under the palm tree of
Deborah between
Ramah and
Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel
came up to her for judgment.
And she would sit under the Palm of
Deborah between
Ramah and
Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, where the Israelites would go up to her for judgment.
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
And, behold, as
Barak pursued Sisera, Jael
came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will
shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he
came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the
nail was in his temples.
When
Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to
greet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man you are seeking.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera dead, with a tent
peg through his temple.
They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or
spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?
When they chose new gods, then war
came to their gates. Not a shield or
spear was found among forty thousand in Israel.
Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.
Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the LORD came down to me against the mighty.
Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir
came down governors, and out of
Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
Some
came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin
came with your people after you. The commanders
came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from
Zebulun.
The kings
came and fought, then fought the kings of
Canaan in Taanach by the waters of
Megiddo; they took no gain of money.
Kings
came and fought; then the kings of
Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of
Megiddo, but they took no
plunder of silver.
Curse ye
Meroz, said the angel of the LORD,
curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they
came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.
‘
Curse Meroz,’ says the angel of the LORD. ‘Bitterly
curse her inhabitants; for they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.’
And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites
came up, and the
Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they
came up against them;
Whenever the Israelites would plant their crops, the Midianites,
Amalekites, and other people of the east would come up and
invade them,
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
For the Midianites
came with their
livestock and their tents like a great
swarm of locusts. They and their
camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to
ravage it.
And it
came to pass, when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,
Now when the Israelites
cried out to the LORD because of
Midian,
And there
came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that
pertained unto
Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son
Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
Then the angel of the LORD
came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to
Joash the Abiezrite, where his son
Gideon was
threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites.
And it
came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young
bullock, even the second
bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of
Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the
grove that is by it:
On that very night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old,
tear down your father’s altar to
Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.
Then all the Midianites and the
Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of
Jezreel.
Then all the Midianites,
Amalekites, and other people of the east gathered together, crossed over the Jordan, and
camped in the Valley of
Jezreel.
But the Spirit of the LORD
came upon
Gideon, and he
blew a
trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him.
So the Spirit of the LORD
came upon
Gideon, who
blew the ram’s horn and
rallied the Abiezrites behind him.
And he sent messengers throughout all
Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto
Zebulun, and unto
Naphtali; and they
came up to meet them.
Then Jerubbaal, who is
Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon) and all the men with him
camped beside the spring of Harod. And the
camp of
Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.
So the people took
victuals in their hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of
Midian was beneath him in the valley.
So
Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the
camp of
Midian lay below him in the valley.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
That night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Get up and go down against the
camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.
But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
But if you are afraid to do so, then go down to the camp with your servant Purah
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
and
listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the
camp.” So he went with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the
camp.
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their
camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a
swarm of locusts, and their
camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
And when
Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a
cake of barley bread
tumbled into the host of
Midian, and
came unto a tent, and
smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
And as
Gideon arrived, a man was telling his friend about a dream. “Behold, I had a dream,” he said, “and I saw a
loaf of barley bread come
tumbling into the Midianite
camp. It struck the tent so hard that the tent overturned and
collapsed.”
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered
Midian, and all the host.
His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite. God has delivered
Midian and the whole
camp into his hand.”
And it was so, when
Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of
Midian.
When
Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. He returned to the
camp of Israel and said, “Get up, for the LORD has delivered the
camp of
Midian into your hand.”
And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
“Watch me and do as I do,”
Gideon said. “When I come to the outskirts of the
camp, do exactly as I do.
When I blow with a
trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on every side of all the
camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the
camp and
shout, ‘For the LORD and for
Gideon!’”
So
Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him,
came unto the outside of the
camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the
camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing of the guard. They
blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their hands.
And they stood every man in his place round about the
camp: and all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took his position around the
camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the
camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And
Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him,
faint, yet pursuing them.
Then
Gideon and his three hundred men
came to the Jordan and crossed it, exhausted yet still in pursuit.
And he
came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did
upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are
weary?
And
Gideon went to the men of Succoth and said, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you
taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your
weary men?’”
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And
Gideon arose, and
slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their
camels’ necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us
yourself, for as the man is, so is his strength.” So
Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the
crescent ornaments from the necks of their
camels.
And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple
raiment that was on the kings of
Midian, and beside the chains that were about their
camels’ necks.
The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700 shekels, in addition to the
crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple garments of the kings of
Midian, and the chains from the necks of their
camels.
And it
came to pass, as soon as
Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a
whoring after
Baalim, and made
Baal-berith their god.
And as soon as
Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned and
prostituted themselves with the Baals, and they set up
Baal-berith as their god.
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that
came along that way by them: and it was told
Abimelech.
And Gaal the son of Ebed
came with his brethren, and went over to
Shechem: and the men of
Shechem put their confidence in him.
Meanwhile, Gaal son of Ebed
came with his brothers and crossed into
Shechem, and the leaders of
Shechem put their confidence in him.
And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and
Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as
Abimelech and his men
came out from their hiding places.
And it
came to pass on the
morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told
Abimelech.
The next day the people of
Shechem went out into the fields, and this was reported to
Abimelech.
And
Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
When
Abimelech came to attack the tower, he approached its entrance to set it on fire.
And all the evil of the men of
Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them
came the
curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of
Shechem back upon their own heads. So the
curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal
came upon them.
And
Jair died, and was buried in
Camon.
When
Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.
Then the children of
Ammon were gathered together, and
encamped in
Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and
encamped in Mizpeh.
Then the
Ammonites were called to arms and
camped in
Gilead, and the Israelites assembled and
camped at
Mizpah.
And it
came to pass in process of time, that the children of
Ammon made war against Israel.
Some time later, when the
Ammonites fought against Israel
And the king of the children of
Ammon answered unto the messengers of
Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they
came up out of Egypt, from
Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again
peaceably.
The king of the
Ammonites answered
Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel
came up out of Egypt, they seized my land, from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it
peaceably.”
But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.
Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and
came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of
Arnon, but
came not within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They
came to the east side of the land of Moab and
camped on the other side of the
Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
And
Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter
came out to meet him with
timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
And when
Jephthah returned home to
Mizpah, there was his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing! She was his only child; he had no son or daughter besides her.
And it
came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said,
Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
As soon as
Jephthah saw her, he
tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees! You have brought great misery upon me, for I have given my word to the LORD and cannot take it back.”
And it
came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his
vow which he had
vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
After two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had
vowed. And she had never had relations with a man. So it has become a custom in Israel
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and told her husband, “A man of God
came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he
came from, and he did not tell me his name.
And God
hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of God
came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but
