Now the earth was formless and void, and
darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was
hovering over the surface of the waters.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
And God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.
And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
to preside over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon
Abram; and, lo, an
horror of great
darkness fell upon him.
As the sun was setting,
Abram fell into a deep sleep, and suddenly great terror and
darkness overwhelmed him.
And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
When the sun had set and
darkness had fallen, behold, a smoking
firepot and a flaming
torch appeared and passed between the
halves of the
carcasses.
I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the
speckled and
spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the
spotted and
speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my
hire.
Let me go through all your flocks
today and remove from them every
speckled or
spotted sheep, every
dark-colored lamb, and every
spotted or
speckled goat. These will be my wages.
So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my
hire before thy face: every one that is not
speckled and
spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted
stolen with me.
So my
honesty will
testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I have any goats that are not
speckled or
spotted, or any lambs that are not
dark-colored, they will be considered
stolen.”

spotted female goat—every one that had any white on it—and every
dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons.
And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the
ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of
Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto
Laban’s cattle.
Jacob set apart the young, but made the rest face the
streaked dark-colored sheep in
Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and did not put them with
Laban’s animals.
Judah is a lion’s
whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he
stooped down, he
couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall
rouse him up?
Judah is a young lion— my son, you return from the prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a
lioness, who
dares to
rouse him?
His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.
His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.
For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was
darkened; and they did eat every
herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the
hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.
They covered the face of all the land until it was black, and they consumed all the plants on the ground and all the fruit on the trees that the
hail had left behind. Nothing green was left on any tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, so that
darkness may spread over the land of Egypt—a
palpable darkness.”
And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:
So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and total darkness covered all the land of Egypt for three days.
And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
so that it came between the camps of Egypt and Israel. The cloud was there in the
darkness, but it
lit up the night. So all night long neither camp went near the other.
And the people stood
afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick
darkness where God was.
And the people stood at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day: and, behold, if the plague be somewhat
dark, and the plague spread not in the skin, the priest shall
pronounce him clean: it is but a
scab: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.
The priest will examine him again on the seventh day, and if the
sore has
faded and has not spread on the skin, the priest shall
pronounce him clean; it is a
rash. The person must wash his clothes and be clean.
But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hairs therein, and if it be not lower than the skin, but be somewhat dark; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:
But when the priest examines it, if there is no white hair in it, and it is not beneath the skin and has
faded, the priest shall
isolate him for seven days.
But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hair in the bright spot, and it be no lower than the other skin, but be somewhat dark; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:
But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot, and it is not beneath the skin but has
faded, the priest shall
isolate him for seven days.
And if the bright spot stay in his place, and spread not in the skin, but it be somewhat
dark; it is a rising of the burning, and the priest shall
pronounce him clean: for it is an inflammation of the burning.
But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread on the skin but has
faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest is to
pronounce him clean; for it is only the
scar from the burn.
Then the priest shall look: and, behold, if the bright spots in the skin of their flesh be
darkish white; it is a
freckled spot that groweth in the skin; he is clean.
the priest shall examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a
harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; the person is clean.
And if the priest look, and, behold, the plague be somewhat
dark after the washing of it; then he shall
rend it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the
warp, or out of the
woof:
With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in
dark speeches; and the
similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?
I speak with him face to face, clearly and not in
riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you unafraid to speak against My servant Moses?”
But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
But they
dared to go up to the ridge of the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the covenant of the LORD moved from the camp.
He
couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall
stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and
cursed is he that curseth thee.
And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain
blazing with fire to the heavens, with black clouds and deep
darkness.
These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
And when you heard the voice out of the
darkness while the mountain was
blazing with fire, all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me,
But the prophet, which shall
presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
But if any prophet
dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or to speak in the name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death.”
and at
noon you will
grope about like a blind man in the
darkness. You will not
prosper in your ways. Day after day you will be
oppressed and
plundered, with no one to save you.
And it came to pass about the time of
shutting of the gate, when it was
dark, that the men went out:
whither the men went I
wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
At
dusk, when the gate was about to close, the men went out, and I do not know which way they went. Pursue them quickly, and you may catch them!”
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

And when they
cried unto the LORD, he put
darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.
So your fathers
cried out to the LORD, and He put
darkness between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and
engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.

Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a
wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.
Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, where a servant
girl would come and pass along information to them. They in turn would go and inform King David, for they
dared not be seen entering the city.
Then said
Joab, I may not
tarry thus with thee. And he took three
darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
But
Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this with you!” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom while he was still alive in the oak tree.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet.
And he made
darkness pavilions round about him,
dark waters, and thick clouds of the
skies.
He made
darkness a
canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds.
For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will
lighten my
darkness.
For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness.

Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and
Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.

Ethan the Ezrahite, and wiser than Heman, Calcol, and
Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread throughout the surrounding nations.

Ahab rode, and went to
Jezreel.

Ahab rode away and went to
Jezreel.

Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired
Millo in the city of David, and made
darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and

The children of Jaalah, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel,

hired counsellors against them, to

The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the
Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto
Darius the king:
This is the text of the letter that Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates, the officials in the region, sent to King
Darius.
They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto
Darius the king, all peace.

Thus King
Darius ordered a search of the
archives stored in the treasury of Babylon.
Now therefore, Tatnai, governor beyond the river, Shethar-boznai, and your companions the
Apharsachites, which are beyond the river, be ye far from thence:
Therefore
Darius decreed: To Tattenai governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and your associates and officials in the region: You must stay away from that place!
And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I
Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.
May God, who has caused His Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to alter this decree or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I,
Darius, have issued the decree. Let it be carried out with
diligence.
Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river, Shethar-boznai, and their companions, according to that which
Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily.
In
response, Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates
diligently carried out what King
Darius had decreed.
And the elders of the Jews builded, and they
prospered through the
prophesying of

Zechariah the son of
Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and
Darius, and
Artaxerxes king of Persia.

And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.
When the evening shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem, just before the Sabbath, I ordered that the gates be shut and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my servants at the gates so that no load could enter on the Sabbath day.
Let that day be
darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light
shine upon it.
If only that day had turned to
darkness! May God above disregard it; may no light
shine upon it.
Let
darkness and the shadow of death
stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day
terrify it.
May
darkness and
gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it; may the blackness of the day
overwhelm it.
As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.
If only darkness had taken that night away! May it not appear among the days of the year; may it never be entered in any of the months.
Let the stars of the
twilight thereof be
dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the
dawning of the day:
May its morning stars grow
dark; may it wait in vain for
daylight; may it not see the breaking of
dawn.

Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who
dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’
Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
before I go—never to return— to a land of
darkness and
gloom,
A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.
to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”
And thine age shall be clearer than the
noonday; thou shalt
shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
Your life will be brighter than
noonday; its
darkness will be like the morning.
He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.
He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into light.
They
grope in the
darkness without light; He makes them
stagger like drunkards.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
He despairs of his return from darkness; he is marked for the sword.
He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
He wanders about as food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
He will not escape from the darkness; the flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness.
They have turned night into day, making light seem near in the face of darkness.
If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.
If I look for
Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in
darkness,
The light shall be
dark in his tabernacle, and his
candle shall be put out with him.
The light in his tent grows dark, and the lamp beside him goes out.
He shall be driven from light into
darkness, and
chased out of the world.
He is driven from light into
darkness and is
chased from the inhabited world.
He hath
fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set
darkness in my paths.
He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; He has
veiled my paths with
darkness.
All
darkness shall be
hid in his secret places: a fire not
blown shall
consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle.
Total
darkness is reserved for his treasures. A fire unfanned will
consume him and
devour what is left in his tent.
Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.
And thou sayest, How
doth God know? can he judge through the
dark cloud?
Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge through thick darkness?
Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.
In the
dark they
dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the
daytime: they know not the light.
In the
dark they
dig through houses; by day they shut themselves in, never to experience the light.
For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.
For to them, deep darkness is their morning; surely they are friends with the terrors of darkness!
He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.
He has inscribed a horizon on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.
He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
Man puts an end to the
darkness; he probes the
farthest recesses for ore in deepest
darkness.
When his
candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through
darkness;
when His lamp
shone above my head, and by His light I walked through the
darkness,
When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
But when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, darkness fell.
There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide.
Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
Teach us what we should say to Him; we cannot draw up our case when our faces are in darkness.
