affliction, he
besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers,

“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the

Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great
trespass unto this day; and for our
iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
From the days of our fathers to this day, our guilt has been great. Because of our
iniquities, we and our kings and priests have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the
earth and put to the sword and captivity, to
pillage and
humiliation, as we are this day.
Let thine
ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have
sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your
ears attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
O Lord, I
beseech thee, let now thine
ear be
attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and
prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s
cupbearer.
O Lord, may Your
ear be
attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of Your servants who delight to
revere Your name. Give Your servant success this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” (At that time I was the
cupbearer to the king.)

And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until
midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the
ears of all the people were
attentive unto the book of the law.

Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens, the highest heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all things, and the host of heaven worships You.
Yet many years
didst thou
forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give
ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
You were patient with them for many years, and Your Spirit
admonished them through Your prophets. Yet they would not
listen, so You gave them into the hands of the
neighboring peoples.
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up
early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have
sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to

roaming through the
earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”

Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the

Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on
earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.”
And the LORD said unto
Satan, From whence comest thou? And
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and
fro in the
earth, and from walking up and down in it.
“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to
Satan. “From
roaming through the
earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the
earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on
earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
With kings and counsellors of the
earth, which built
desolate places for themselves;

laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the

Is there not an appointed time to man upon
earth? are not his days also like the days of an
hireling?
“Is not man
consigned to labor on
earth? Are not his days like those of a
hired hand?
As a servant
earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an
hireling looketh for the reward of his work:
Like a slave he longs for shade; like a
hireling he waits for his wages.
But if you would
earnestly seek God and ask the
Almighty for mercy,
(For we are but of
yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon
earth are a shadow:)
For we were born
yesterday and know nothing; our days on
earth are but a shadow.

Hear
diligently my speech, and my declaration with your
ears.

ears.
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
If its roots grow old in the ground and its
stump dies in the soil,
The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
as water wears away the stones and torrents wash away the soil, so You destroy a man’s hope.

ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

tear yourself in anger— should the
earth be
forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place?

remembrance shall perish from the
earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,
Do you not know that from antiquity, since man was placed on the earth,
The heaven shall
reveal his iniquity; and the
earth shall rise up against him.

expose his iniquity, and the
earth will rise up against him.

cursed in the

They are
exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the

Men

earth.
A senseless and nameless
brood, they were driven off the land.

listened to your reasoning; as you searched for words,

For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.
For the ear tests words as the mouth tastes food.

earth.

You whose clothes get hot when the land lies
hushed under the south wind,
Where
wast thou when I laid the foundations of the
earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.

earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his

Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the
uttermost parts of the
earth for thy possession.
Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance, the ends of the earth Your possession.

instructed, ye judges of the
earth.
Therefore be wise, O kings; be
admonished, O judges of the
earth.

ear to my words, O LORD, consider my
meditation.

ear to my words, O LORD; consider my
groaning.

persecute my soul, and take it;
yea, let him
tread down my life upon the
earth, and lay mine honour in the dust.
Selah.

trample me to the ground and leave my honor in the dust.

majestic is Your name in all the
earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.

O LORD, our Lord, how
majestic is Your name in all the
earth!

oppressed, that the man of the
earth may no more
oppress.
to
vindicate the fatherless and
oppressed, that the men of the
earth may strike terror no more.
