Did not your
fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by
profaning the sabbath.
Did not your forefathers do the same things, so that our God brought all this
disaster on us and on this city? And now you are
rekindling His wrath against Israel by
profaning the Sabbath!”
And he brought up Hadassah, that is,
Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither
father nor mother, and the
maid was fair and beautiful; whom
Mordecai, when her
father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
And
Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is,
Esther), the daughter of his uncle, because she did not have a
father or mother. The young woman was lovely in form and appearance, and when her
father and mother had died,
Mordecai had taken her in as his own daughter.
Then
Mordecai commanded to answer
Esther, Think not with
thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.
he sent back to her this reply: “Do not imagine that because you are in the king’s palace you alone will escape the fate of all the Jews.
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there
enlargement and
deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy
father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and
deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your
father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Haman stayed behind to
beg Queen
Esther for his life, for he realized that the king was
planning a terrible
fate for him.

thyself to the search of their
fathers:
Please inquire of past generations and consider the discoveries of their fathers.
Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the
Almighty unto perfection?
Can you
fathom the deep things of God or discover the limits of the
Almighty?
He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp
despised in the thought of him that is at ease.

fate of those whose feet are
slipping.

crushed.

pledge.

fatherless and take the widow’s ox in
pledge.

pledge of the poor.

snatched from the breast; the

cried, and the
fatherless, and him that had none to help him.

rescued the poor who
cried out and the
fatherless who had no helper.

father to the
needy, and I took up the case of the stranger.

derision, whose
fathers I would have
disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

mock me, men younger than I am, whose
fathers I would have refused to
entrust with my sheep dogs.

morsel myself alone, and the
fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
if I have eaten my
morsel alone, not sharing it with the
fatherless—

father, and I have guided her from my mother’s
womb;)
though from my youth I reared him as would a
father, and from my mother’s
womb I guided the widow—
If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless because I saw that I had support in the gate,
Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness.

father? or who hath

dew?
Does the rain have a
father? Who has

dew?

Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

fatherless.

fade away.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a
sojourner, as all my
fathers were.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be
deaf to my
weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my
fathers.

fathers have told us, what work thou
didst in their days, in the times of old.

didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou
didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

fathers, a
stubborn and
rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart
aright, and whose spirit was not
stedfast with God.

fathers, a
stubborn and
rebellious generation, whose heart was not
loyal, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

smote down the chosen men of Israel.
God’s anger
flared against them, and He put to death their strongest and subdued the young men of Israel.

fathers: they were turned aside like a
deceitful bow.

fathers, twisted like a
faulty bow.

fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.

sinned with our
fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.

fathers; we have done wrong and acted wickedly.

fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy
mercies; but
provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.

fathers in Egypt did not
grasp Your wonders or remember Your abundant kindness; but they rebelled by the sea, there at the Red Sea.

fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be
blotted out.

fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth
upside down.

father, and
forsake not the law of thy mother:
Listen, my son, to your
father’s instruction, and do not
forsake the teaching of your mother.

father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.
For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
When I was a son to my father, tender and the only child of my mother,
My son, keep thy
father’s commandment, and
forsake not the law of thy mother:
My son, keep your
father’s commandment, and do not
forsake your mother’s teaching.
The
proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his
father, but a
foolish son grief to his mother.
The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
A generous soul will
prosper, and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
A wise son heareth his
father’s instruction: but a
scorner heareth not
rebuke.
The soul of the
sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the
diligent shall be made
fat.
The slacker craves yet has nothing, but the soul of the
diligent is fully satisfied.
A
fool despiseth his
father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is
prudent.
Better a
dish of vegetables where there is love than a
fattened ox with hatred.
A wise son maketh a
glad father: but a
foolish man despiseth his mother.
A wise son brings joy to his
father, but a
foolish man despises his mother.

The light of the eyes cheers the heart, and good news nourishes the bones.

He that begetteth a
fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the
father of a
fool hath no joy.
A man
fathers a
fool to his own grief; the
father of a
fool has no joy.
A
foolish son is a grief to his
father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
A
foolish son brings grief to his
father and bitterness to her who bore him.
House and riches are the inheritance of
fathers and a
prudent wife is from the LORD.

fathers, but a
prudent wife is from the LORD.

father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Remove not the ancient
landmark, which thy
fathers have set.

landmark; and enter not into the fields of the
fatherless:

encroach on the fields of the
fatherless,
Listen to your
father who gave you life, and do not
despise your mother when she is old.
The
father of the righteous shall greatly
rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
The
father of a righteous man will greatly
rejoice, and he who
fathers a wise son will delight in him.
Thy
father and thy mother shall be
glad, and she that bare thee shall
rejoice.
May your
father and mother be
glad, and may she who gave you birth
rejoice!
Thine own friend, and thy
father’s friend,
forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy
calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
Do not
forsake your friend or your
father’s friend, and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your
calamity; better a
neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of
riotous men shameth his
father.
A
discerning son keeps the law, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his
father.
Whoso robbeth his
father or his mother, and saith, It is no
transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.
He who robs his father or mother, saying, “It is not wrong,” is a companion to the man who destroys.
He that is of a proud heart stirreth up
strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made
fat.
