former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is

abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

abomination to the LORD. You must not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver;

heavily burdened the people, taking from them bread and wine
plus forty shekels of silver. Their servants also
oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my fear of God.

remembrance of
former things; neither shall there be any
remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

remembrance of those who came before, and those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow after.

Thine heart shall
meditate terror. Where is the

assemble. Who among them can declare this, and
proclaim to us the
former things? Let them present their witnesses to
vindicate them, so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”

I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.
I
foretold the
former things long ago; they came out of My mouth and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

iniquities, and the
iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and

bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall
swear by the God of truth; because the
former troubles are forgotten, and because they are
hid from mine eyes.

whoever takes an oath in the land will
swear by the God of truth. For the
former troubles will be forgotten and hidden from My sight.
For, behold, I
create new heavens and a new earth: and the
former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.

gladness, the voice of the
bridegroom, and the voice of the
bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the LORD.
the sounds of joy and
gladness, the voices of the
bride and
bridegroom, and the voices of those bringing
thank offerings into the house of the LORD, saying: ‘Give
thanks to the LORD of Hosts, for the LORD is good; His loving devotion endures
forever.’ For I will restore the land from captivity as in
former times, says the LORD.

former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and they will
lament thee, saying,
Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the LORD.

former kings who preceded you, so people will burn spices for you and
lament, ‘
Alas, O master!’ For I Myself have spoken this word, declares the LORD.”
Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the
former words that were in the first roll, which

When thy sisters,
Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their
former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their
former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your
former estate.

former state. You and your daughters will also return to your
former state.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which
prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?
This is what the Lord GOD says: Are you the one of whom I have spoken in
former days through My servants, the prophets of Israel, who in those times
prophesied for years that I would bring you against them?
For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.
For the king of the North will raise another army, larger than the first, and after some years he will advance with a great army and many supplies.
At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.
At the appointed time he will
invade the South again, but this time will not be like the first.
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
So let us know— let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the rain, like the spring showers that water the earth.
Be
glad then, ye children of
Zion, and
rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the
former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the
former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
Be
glad, O children of
Zion, and
rejoice in the LORD your God, for He has given you the autumn rains for your
vindication. He sends you showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before.
And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of
Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.

watchtower of the flock, O
stronghold of the Daughter of
Zion— the
former dominion will be restored to you; sovereignty will come to the Daughter of Jerusalem.”
Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’
The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the
former prophets have
cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor
hearken unto me, saith the LORD.
Do not be like your fathers, to whom the
former prophets proclaimed that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your evil ways and deeds.’ But they did not
listen or pay attention to Me, declares the LORD.
Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath
cried by the
former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?
Are these not the words that the LORD proclaimed through the earlier prophets, when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were
populous and prosperous, and the Negev and the foothills were inhabited?’”
Yea, they made their hearts as an
adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the
former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.
They made their hearts like flint and would not
listen to the law or to the words that the LORD of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of Hosts.
But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts.
But now I will not treat the
remnant of this people as I did in the past,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.
Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will please the LORD, as in days of old and years gone by.
Woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay
tithe of
mint and
anise and
cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you,
scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay
tithes of
mint,
dill, and
cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the
former.
But
woe unto you,
Pharisees! for ye
tithe mint and
rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you
Pharisees! You pay
tithes of
mint,
rue, and every
herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the
former.
The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and
begged?
At this, his neighbors and those who had
formerly seen him
begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and
beg?”
The
former treatise have I made, O
Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
In my first book, O
Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach,
For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have now received mercy through their disobedience,
For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I
persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:
For you have heard of my
former way of life in
Judaism, how severely I
persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.
But they had heard only, That he which
persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.
They only heard the account: “The man who
formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.”
Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called
Uncircumcision by that which is called the
Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
Therefore remember that
formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called
uncircumcised by the so-called
circumcision (that done in the body by human hands)—
That ye put off concerning the
former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the
deceitful lusts;
to put off your
former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its
deceitful desires;
But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.
The
former, however,
preach Christ out of
selfish ambition, not
sincerely, supposing that they can add to the distress of my chains.
Who was before a
blasphemer, and a
persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
I was
formerly a
blasphemer, a
persecutor, and a violent man; yet because I had acted in ignorance and unbelief, I was shown mercy.
Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
For there is
verily a
disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.
So the former commandment is set aside because it was weak and useless
Remember the early days that you were in the light. In those days, you
endured a great conflict in the face of suffering.
As
obedient children, not fashioning
yourselves according to the
former lusts in your ignorance:
As
obedient children, do not
conform to the passions of your
former ignorance.
And God shall
wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the
former things are passed away.
‘He will
wipe away every
tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or
mourning or crying or pain, for the
former things have passed away.”
As for the things that came to pass in his time, they were written in
former times, concerning those that
sinned, and did wickedly against the Lord above all people and kingdoms, and how they
grieved him exceedingly, so that the words of the Lord rose up against Israel.
Also of the priests and Levites, and of the chief of their families, the ancients who had seen the
former house came to the building of this with
weeping and great crying.
And the world shall be turned into the old silence seven days, like as in the former judgments: so that no man shall remain.
And punishments came upon the sinners not without
former signs by the force of thunders: for they suffered justly according to their own wickedness,
insomuch as they used a more hard and
hateful behaviour toward strangers.
My son, hast thou
sinned? do so no more, but ask
pardon for thy
former sins.
Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;
And all the
overplus, which the officers payed not in as in
former time, from henceforth shall be given toward the works of the temple.
So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said,
Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in
former time.
For this cause we chose Numenius the son of
Antiochus, and
Antipater he son of
Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the
amity that we had with them, and the
former league.
But he answered in his own language, and said, No. Wherefore he also received the next
torment in order, as the
former did.
For in the
former times, when they mingled not themselves with the Gentiles, he had been accused of
Judaism, and did boldly
jeopard his body and life with all
vehemency for the religion of the Jews.
Wherefore he
exhorted his people not to fear the coming of the heathen against them, but to remember the help which in
former times they had received from heaven, and now to expect the victory and aid, which should come unto them from the
Almighty.
