And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of
Cilicia;
The governor read the letter and asked what province Paul was
from. Learning that he was
from Cilicia,
At the time they found me in the temple, I was
ceremonially clean and was not
inciting a crowd or an
uproar. But there are some Jews
from the province of Asia
Now when
Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended
from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
Three days after his arrival in the province,
Festus went up
from Caesarea to Jerusalem,
And when he was come, the Jews which came down
from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and
grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.
When Paul arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many serious charges that they could not prove.
My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;
Surely all the Jews know how I have lived from the earliest days of my youth, among my own people and in Jerusalem.
Which knew me
from the beginning, if they would
testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a
Pharisee.
They have known me for a long time and can
testify, if they are willing, that I lived as a
Pharisee,
adhering to the strictest sect of our religion.
Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.
And that is what I did in Jerusalem. With authority from the chief priests I put many of the saints in prison, and when they were condemned to death, I cast my vote against them.
Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission
from the chief priests,
In this pursuit I was on my way to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.
At
midday, O king, I saw in the way a light
from heaven, above the brightness of the sun,
shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.
About
noon, O king, as I was on the road, I saw a light
from heaven, brighter than the sun,
shining around me and my companions.
But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
‘But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you to
appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen
from Me and what I will show you.
Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
I will
rescue you
from your own people and
from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them
To open their eyes, and to turn them
from darkness to light, and
from the power of
Satan unto God, that they may receive
forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are
sanctified by faith that is in me.
to open their eyes, so that they may turn
from darkness to light and
from the power of
Satan to God, that they may receive
forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those
sanctified by faith in Me.’
That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise
from the dead, and should
shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
that the Christ would suffer, and as the first to rise
from the dead, would
proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”
For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.
For the king knows about these matters, and I can speak freely to him. I am
confident that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.
And when we had
launched from thence, we sailed under
Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
After putting out
from there, we sailed to the
lee of
Cyprus because the winds were against us.
But after long
abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have
hearkened unto me, and not have loosed
from Crete, and to have gained this
harm and loss.
After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have followed my advice not to sail
from Crete. Then you would have
averted this
disaster and loss.
Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
Fearing that we would run
aground on the rocks, they dropped four anchors
from the stern and prayed for
daybreak.
And as the
shipmen were about to
flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the
foreship,
Meanwhile, the sailors attempted to escape
from the ship. Pretending to lower anchors
from the bow, they let the
lifeboat down into the sea.
Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
So for your own preservation, I
urge you to eat something, because not a single hair of your head will be lost.”
But the
centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them
from their purpose; and commanded that they which could
swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
And when the barbarians saw the
venomous beast
hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet
vengeance suffereth not to live.
When the islanders saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “Surely this man is a murderer. Although he was saved from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.”
And it came to pass, that the father of
Publius lay sick of a fever and of a
bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and
healed him.
The father of
Publius was sick in bed, suffering
from fever and
dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after praying and placing his hands on him, he
healed the man.
And
from thence we
fetched a compass, and came to
Rhegium: and after one day the south wind
blew, and we came the next day to
Puteoli:
From there we
weighed anchor and came to
Rhegium. After one day, a south wind came up, and on the second day we arrived at
Puteoli.
And
from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as
Appii Forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he
thanked God, and took courage.
The brothers there had heard about us and traveled as far as the
Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. When Paul saw them, he was encouraged and gave
thanks to God.
And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
After three days, he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, I was taken prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.
And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any
harm of thee.
The leaders replied, “We have not received any letters about you
from Judea, nor have any of the brothers
from there reported or even mentioned anything bad about you.
And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his
lodging; to whom he
expounded and
testified the kingdom of God,
persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets,
from morning till evening.
So they set a day to meet with Paul, and many people came to the place he was staying. He
expounded to them
from morning to evening,
testifying about the kingdom of God and
persuading them about Jesus
from the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of
holiness, by the resurrection
from the dead:
and who through the Spirit of
holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection
from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
By whom we have received grace and
apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
Through Him and on behalf of His name, we received grace and
apostleship to call all those among the Gentiles to the obedience that comes
from faith.
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that
oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, how often I
planned to come to you (but have been prevented
from visiting until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
For the wrath of God is revealed
from heaven against all
ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
The wrath of God is being revealed
from heaven against all the
godlessness and wickedness of men who
suppress the truth by their wickedness.
For the invisible things of him
from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and
Godhead; so that they are without
excuse:
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood
from His
workmanship, so that men are without
excuse.
For as many as have
sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have
sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.
But he is a
Jew, which is one inwardly; and
circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
No, a man is a
Jew because he is one inwardly, and
circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise does not come
from men, but
from God.
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
But now, apart
from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, as
attested by the Law and the Prophets.
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
but also for us, to whom righteousness will be credited—for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Therefore, since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him!
Nevertheless death reigned
from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not
sinned after the
similitude of Adam’s
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
Nevertheless, death reigned
from Adam until Moses, even over those who did not sin in the way that Adam
transgressed. He is a pattern of the One to come.
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
For
anyone who has died has been freed
from sin.
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield
yourselves unto God, as those that are alive
from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present
yourselves to God as those who have been brought
from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness.
But God be
thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed
from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
But
thanks be to God that, though you once were slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed.
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
For when you were slaves to sin, you were free of obligation to righteousness.
What fruit had ye then in those things
whereof ye are now
ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
What fruit did you
reap at that time
from the things of which you are now
ashamed? The outcome of those things is death.
But now being made free
from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto
holiness, and the end
everlasting life.
But now that you have been set free
from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you
reap leads to
holiness, and the outcome is eternal life.
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an
adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free
from that law; so that she is no
adulteress, though she be married to another man.
So then, if she is joined to another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an
adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free
from that law and is not an
adulteress, even if she marries another man.
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
Therefore, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
But now, having died to what bound us, we have been released from the law, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of
concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of
covetous desire. For apart
from the law, sin is dead.
For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
Once I was alive apart
from the law; but when the commandment came, sin
sprang to life and I died.
O
wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me
from the body of this death?
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death.
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus
from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ
from the dead shall also
quicken your
mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus
from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus
from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered
from the
bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
that the creation itself will be set free
from its
bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
Who shall separate us
from the love of Christ? shall
tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or
peril, or sword?
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For I could wish that myself were
accursed from Christ for my brethren, my
kinsmen according to the flesh:
For I could wish that I myself were
cursed and cut off
from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my own flesh and blood,
Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever.
Amen.
Theirs are the patriarchs, and
from them proceeds the human descent of Christ, who is God over all,
forever worthy of praise!
Amen.
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.
Hath not the
potter power over the clay, of the same
lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
Does not the
potter have the right to make
from the same
lump of clay one vessel for special occasions and another for common use?
Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
including us, whom He has called not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles?
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall
ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down
from above:)
But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will
ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)
Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
or, ‘Who will descend into the
Abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up
from the dead).”
That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
that if you
confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved.
I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God
forbid. For I also am an
Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
I ask then, did God
reject His people? Certainly not! I am an
Israelite myself, a
descendant of Abraham,
from the tribe of Benjamin.
For if the casting away of them be the
reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life
from the dead?
For if thou
wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and
wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
For if you were cut
from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were
grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be
grafted into their own olive tree!
And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of
Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away
ungodliness from Jacob:
And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come
from Zion; He will remove
godlessness from Jacob.
For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever.
Amen.
For
from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory
forever!
Amen.
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Everyone must submit himself to the
governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is
from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God.
And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to
awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
And do this, understanding the occasion. The hour has come for you to
wake up
from your
slumber, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
And he that doubteth is
damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for
whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
But the one who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that is not from faith is sin.
Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that
from Jerusalem, and round about unto
Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.
by the power of signs and wonders, and by the power of the Spirit of God. So
from Jerusalem all the way around to
Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.
That is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.
That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;
Pray that I may be delivered
from the unbelievers in
Judea, and that my service in Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints there,
That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in
whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.
Welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her with anything she may need
from you. For she has been a great help to many people, including me.
Now I
beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Now I
urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who
create divisions and obstacles that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Turn away
from them.
But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the
everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
but now revealed and made known through the writings of the prophets by the command of the eternal God, in order to lead all nations to the obedience that comes from faith—
Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and
sanctification, and
redemption:
It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom
from God: our righteousness,
holiness, and
redemption.
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are
foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned.
The natural man does not accept the things that come
from the Spirit of God. For they are
foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually
discerned.
Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will
expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise
from God.
And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be
puffed up for one against another.
Brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us not to go beyond what is written. Then you will not take pride in one man over another.
For who maketh thee to differ
from another? and what hast thou that thou
didst not receive? now if thou
didst receive it, why
dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?
For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you
boast as though you did not?
And ye are
puffed up, and have not rather
mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away
from among you.
And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been
stricken with grief and have removed
from your
fellowship the man who did this?
For I
verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present.
But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away
from among
yourselves that wicked person.
God will judge those outside. “
Expel the wicked man
from among you.”
And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
By His power God raised the Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also.
