And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.
And the LORD your
God will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, and you will take possession of it. He will cause you to
prosper and multiply more than your fathers.
And the LORD thy
God will
circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy
God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.
The LORD your
God will
circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love Him with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.
And the LORD thy
God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that
hate thee, which
persecuted thee.
Then the LORD your
God will put all these curses upon your enemies who
hate you and
persecute you.
And the LORD thy
God will make thee
plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again
rejoice over thee for good, as he
rejoiced over thy fathers:
So the LORD your
God will make you abound in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your
womb, the offspring of your
livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the LORD will again delight in your goodness, as He delighted in that of your fathers,
If thou shalt
hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy
God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy
God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
if you obey the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy
God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy
God shall
bless thee in the land
whither thou goest to possess it.
For I am commanding you
today to love the LORD your
God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and increase, and the LORD your
God may
bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.
But if thine heart turn away, so that thou
wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other
gods, and serve them;
But if your heart turns away and you do not
listen, but are drawn away to bow down to other
gods and worship them,
That thou mayest love the LORD thy
God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest
cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD
sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
and that you may love the LORD your
God, obey Him, and hold fast to Him. For He is your life, and He will
prolong your life in the land that the LORD
swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.
The LORD your
God Himself will cross over
ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will dispossess them. Joshua will cross
ahead of you, as the LORD has said.
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy
God, he it is that
doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
Be strong and
courageous; do not be afraid or
terrified of them, for it is the LORD your
God who goes with you; He will never leave you nor
forsake you.”
When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
when all Israel comes before the LORD your God at the place He will choose, you are to read this law in the hearing of all Israel.
Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:
Assemble the people—men, women, children, and the foreigners within your gates—so that they may
listen and learn to fear the LORD your
God and to follow carefully all the words of this law.
And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your
God, as long as ye live in the land
whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.
Then their children who do not know the law will
listen and learn to fear the LORD your
God, as long as you live in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a
whoring after the
gods of the strangers of the land,
whither they go to be among them, and will
forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest with your fathers, and these people will rise up and
prostitute themselves with the foreign
gods of the land they are entering. They will
forsake Me and break the covenant I have made with them.
Then my anger shall be
kindled against them in that day, and I will
forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be
devoured, and many evils and troubles shall
befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our
God is not among us?
On that day My anger will burn against them, and I will
abandon them and hide My face from them, so that they will be consumed, and many troubles and afflictions will
befall them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these disasters come upon us because our
God is no longer with us?’
And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.
And on that day I will surely hide My face because of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods.
For when I shall have brought them into the land which I
sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and
waxen fat; then will they turn unto other
gods, and serve them, and
provoke me, and break my covenant.
When I have brought them into the land that I
swore to give their fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey, they will eat their fill and
prosper. Then they will turn to other
gods and worship them, and they will
reject Me and break My covenant.
Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
Because I will
publish the name of the LORD:
ascribe ye greatness unto our
God.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He.
When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He divided the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.
So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.
The LORD alone led him, and no foreign god was with him.
But
Jeshurun waxed fat, and
kicked: thou art
waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he
forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.
They
provoked him to jealousy with strange
gods, with abominations
provoked they him to anger.
They
provoked His jealousy with foreign
gods; they
enraged Him with abominations.
They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to gods they had not known, to newly arrived gods, which your fathers did not fear.
Of the Rock that
begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten
God that formed thee.
You
ignored the Rock who brought you forth; you
forgot the
God who gave you birth.
They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not
God; they have
provoked me to anger with their
vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will
provoke them to anger with a
foolish nation.
They have
provoked My jealousy by that which is not
God; they have
enraged Me with their worthless idols. So I will make them
jealous by those who are not a people; I will make them
angry by a nation without understanding.
And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,
He will say: “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge,
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no
god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I
heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.
See now that I am He; there is no
God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I
heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
Rejoice, O heavens, with Him, and let all
God’s angels worship Him.
Rejoice, O nations, with His people; for He will
avenge the blood of His children. He will take
vengeance on His
adversaries and repay those who
hate Him; He will
cleanse His land and His people.
And this is the blessing,
wherewith Moses the man of
God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death.
And of Levi he said, Let thy
Thummim and thy
Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou
didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou
didst strive at the waters of Meribah;
Concerning Levi he said: “Give Your
Thummim to Levi and Your
Urim to Your
godly one, whom You tested at Massah and contested at the waters of Meribah.
And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.
Concerning Benjamin he said: “May the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him; God shields him all day long, and upon His shoulders he rests.”
There is none like unto the
God of
Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his
excellency on the sky.
“There is none like the
God of
Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to your aid, and the clouds in His majesty.
The eternal
God is thy refuge, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
The eternal
God is your dwelling place, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy before you, giving the command, ‘Destroy him!’
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy
God is with thee
whithersoever thou goest.
Have I not commanded you to be strong and
courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your
God is with you wherever you go.”
Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you
victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your
God giveth you to possess it.
“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’”
Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.
“Remember what Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you when he said, ‘The LORD your God will give you rest, and He will give you this land.’
Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your
God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD’S servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the
sunrising.
until the LORD gives them rest as He has done for you, and your brothers also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”
According as we
hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we
hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy
God be with thee, as he was with Moses.
Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. And may the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses.
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did
melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your
God, he is
God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
When we heard this, our hearts melted and
everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your
God is
God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
and commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your
God being carried by the
Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it.
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come
hither, and hear the words of the LORD your
God.
So Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and
listen to the words of the LORD your
God.”
And Joshua said,
Hereby ye shall know that the living
God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Hivites, and the
Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the Jebusites.
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
and said to them, “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of Israel,
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, just as He did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over.
That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.
He did this so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and so that you may always fear the LORD your God.”
And Joshua said,
Alas, O Lord
GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us? would to
God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
“O, Lord
GOD,” Joshua said, “why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
Up,
sanctify the people, and say,
Sanctify yourselves against to
morrow: for thus saith the LORD
God of Israel, There is an
accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the
accursed thing from among you.
Get up and
consecrate the people, saying, ‘
Consecrate yourselves for
tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the
God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
And Joshua said unto
Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD
God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
So Joshua said to
Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the
God of Israel, and make a confession to Him. I
urge you to tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
And
Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have
sinned against the LORD
God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
“It is true,”
Achan replied, “I have
sinned against the LORD, the
God of Israel. This is what I did:
Then ye shall rise up from the
ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your
God will deliver it into your hand.
you are to rise from the
ambush and seize the city, for the LORD your
God will deliver it into your hand.
Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD
God of Israel in mount
Ebal,
At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount
Ebal to the LORD, the
God of Israel,
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
And the children of Israel
smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had
sworn unto them by the LORD
God of Israel. And all the congregation
murmured against the princes.
But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had
sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the
God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders.
But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have
sworn unto them by the LORD
God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
All the leaders answered, “We have
sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the
God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
Now therefore ye are
cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being
bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my
God.
Now therefore you are under a
curse and will perpetually serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my
God.”
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy
God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your
God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and
smite the
hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your
God hath delivered them into your hand.
But you, do not stop there. Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Do not let them reach their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand.”
So Joshua
smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the
vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD
God of Israel commanded.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
And because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel, Joshua captured all these kings and their land in one campaign.
Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The offerings made by fire to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of
God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.
Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at
Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of
God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people
melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my
God.
Although my brothers who went with me made the hearts of the people
melt with fear, I remained
loyal to the LORD my
God.
And Moses
sware on that day, saying, Surely the land
whereon thy feet have
trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my
God.
On that day Moses
swore to me, saying, ‘Surely the land on which you have set foot will be an inheritance to you and your children
forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my
God.’
Hebron therefore became the inheritance of
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD
God of Israel.
Therefore
Hebron belongs to
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the
God of Israel.
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye
slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD
God of your fathers hath given you?
So Joshua said to the Israelites, “How long will you put off entering and possessing the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?
Ye shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description
hither to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the LORD our
God.
When you have
mapped out the seven portions of land and brought it to me, I will cast lots for you here in the presence of the LORD our
God.
Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.
All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.
And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.
And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your
God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What
trespass is this that ye have committed against the
God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might
rebel this day against the LORD?
“This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says: ‘What is this breach of faith you have committed
today against the
God of Israel by turning away from the LORD and building for
yourselves an altar, that you might
rebel against the LORD this day?
Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but
rebel not against the LORD, nor
rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our
God.
If indeed the land of your inheritance is unclean, then cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take possession of it among us. But do not
rebel against the LORD or against us by building for
yourselves an altar other than the altar of the LORD our
God.
The LORD
God of
gods, the LORD
God of
gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in
transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)
“The LORD, the Mighty One, is
God! The LORD, the Mighty One, is
God! He knows, and may Israel also know. If this was in rebellion or breach of faith against the LORD, do not
spare us
today.
And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?
But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
God forbid that we should
rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our
God that is before his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him
today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our
God, which stands before His tabernacle.”
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed
God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is
God.
So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.
“and you have seen everything that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, because it was the LORD your God who fought for you.
And the LORD your
God, he shall
expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your
God hath promised unto you.
The LORD your
God will
push them out of your way and drive them out before you, so that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your
God promised you.
That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the names of their
gods, nor cause to
swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:
So you are not to associate with these nations that remain among you. You must not call on the names of their
gods or
swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow down to them.
But
cleave unto the LORD your
God, as ye have done unto this day.
Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.
One man of you shall
chase a thousand: for the LORD your
God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
One of you can put a thousand to flight, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as He promised.
Take good
heed therefore unto
yourselves, that ye love the LORD your
God.
Therefore watch
yourselves carefully, that you love the LORD your
God.
Know for a certainty that the LORD your
God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your
God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your
God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your
God has given you.
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Now behold,
today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know with all your heart and soul that not one of the good promises the LORD your
God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your
God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
When ye have
transgressed the covenant of the LORD your
God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other
gods, and bowed
yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be
kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
If you
transgress the covenant of the LORD your
God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other
gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to
Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before
God.
Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at
Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before
God.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the
God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and
Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other
gods.
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in
sincerity and in truth: and put away the
gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in
sincerity and truth; cast aside the
gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the
gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the
gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the
gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the
gods of the
Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
And the people answered and said,
God forbid that we should
forsake the LORD, to serve other
gods;
The people replied, “Far be it from us to
forsake the LORD to serve other
gods!
For the LORD our
God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And the LORD
drave out from before us all the people, even the
Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our
God.
And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the
Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because He is our
God!”
And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy
God; he is a
jealous God; he will not
forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy
God; He is a
jealous God; He will not
forgive your rebellion or your sins.
If ye
forsake the LORD, and serve strange
gods, then he will turn and do you
hurt, and
consume you, after that he hath done you good.
If you
forsake the LORD and serve foreign
gods, He will turn and bring
disaster on you and
consume you, even after He has been good to you.”
Now therefore put away, said he, the strange
gods which are among you, and
incline your heart unto the LORD
God of Israel.
“Now, therefore,” he said, “get rid of the foreign
gods among you and
incline your hearts to the LORD, the
God of Israel.”
And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
So the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey His voice.”
