And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
And Joshua said to all the people, “You see this stone. It will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny your God.”
And Adoni-bezek said,
Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so
God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Then Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and
big toes cut off have gathered the scraps under my table. As I have done to them, so
God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their
gods shall be a
snare unto you.
So now I tell you that I will not drive out these people before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their
gods will be a
snare to you.”
And they
forsook the LORD
God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other
gods, of the
gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus they
forsook the LORD, the
God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various
gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after other
gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other
gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other
gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other
gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
And they took the daughters of these people in marriage, gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and
forgat the LORD their
God, and served
Baalim and the groves.
So the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; they
forgot the LORD their
God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
And she sent and called
Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-
naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD
God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount
Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of
Naphtali and of the children of
Zebulun?
She summoned
Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in
Naphtali and said to him, “Surely the LORD, the
God of Israel, is commanding you: ‘Go and march to Mount
Tabor, taking with you ten thousand men of
Naphtali and
Zebulun.
So
God subdued on that day Jabin the king of
Canaan before the children of Israel.
On that day
God subdued Jabin king of
Canaan before the Israelites.
Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.
Listen, O kings! Give ear, O princes! I will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD, the
God of Israel.
The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that
Sinai from before the LORD
God of Israel.
The mountains
quaked before the LORD, the One of
Sinai, before the LORD, the
God of Israel.
They chose new
gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or
spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?
When they chose new
gods, then war came to their gates. Not a shield or
spear was found among forty thousand in Israel.
That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD
God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of
bondage;
He sent them a prophet, who told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
And I said unto you, I am the LORD your
God; fear not the
gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.
And I said to you: ‘I am the LORD your
God. You must not fear the
gods of the
Amorites, in whose land you dwell.’ But you did not obey Me.”
And the angel of
God said unto him, Take the flesh and the
unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the
broth. And he did so.
And the angel of
God said to him, “Take the meat and the
unleavened bread, lay them on this rock, and pour out the
broth.” And
Gideon did so.
And when
Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD,
Gideon said,
Alas, O Lord
GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
When
Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord
GOD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!”
And build an altar unto the LORD thy
God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second
bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the
grove which thou shalt cut down.
Then build a proper altar to the LORD your
God on the top of this
stronghold. And with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down, take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”
And
Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye
plead for
Baal? will ye save him? he that will
plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a
god, let him
plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
But
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you
contending for
Baal? Are you trying to save him?
Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a
god, let him
contend for himself with the one who has
torn down his altar.”
And
Gideon said unto
God, If thou
wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
Then
Gideon said to
God, “If You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said,
And
Gideon said unto
God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the
fleece; let it now be dry only upon the
fleece, and upon all the ground let there be
dew.
Then
Gideon said to
God, “Do not be
angry with me; let me speak one more time. Please allow me one more test with the
fleece. This time let it be dry, and the ground covered with
dew.”
And
God did so that night: for it was dry upon the
fleece only, and there was
dew on all the ground.
And that night
God did so. Only the
fleece was dry, and
dew covered the ground.
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath
God delivered
Midian, and all the host.
His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite.
God has delivered
Midian and the whole camp into his hand.”
God hath delivered into your hands the princes of
Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was
abated toward him, when he had said that.
God has delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of
Midian, into your hand. What was I able to do compared to you?” When he had said this, their anger against him
subsided.
And it came to pass, as soon as
Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a
whoring after
Baalim, and made
Baal-berith their
god.
And as soon as
Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned and
prostituted themselves with the Baals, and they set up
Baal-berith as their
god.
And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
The Israelites failed to remember the LORD their God who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount
Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and
cried, and said unto them,
Hearken unto me, ye men of
Shechem, that
God may
hearken unto you.
But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness,
wherewith by me they honour
God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both
God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the
grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both
God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and
trode the grapes, and made
merry, and went into the house of their
god, and did eat and drink, and
cursed Abimelech.
And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes from their vineyards, and
trodden them, they held a festival and went into the house of their
god; and as they
ate and
drank, they
cursed Abimelech.
And would to
God this people were under my hand! then would I remove
Abimelech. And he said to
Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
If only this people were under my authority, I would remove
Abimelech; I would say to him, ‘Muster your army and come out!’”
And when all the men of the tower of
Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the
god Berith.
On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
Thus
God rendered the wickedness of
Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in
slaying his seventy brethren:
In this way
God repaid the wickedness that
Abimelech had done to his father in murdering his seventy brothers.
And all the evil of the men of
Shechem did
God render upon their heads: and upon them came the
curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
And
God also brought all the wickedness of the men of
Shechem back upon their own heads. So the
curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served
Baalim, and
Ashtaroth, and the
gods of Syria, and the
gods of Zidon, and the
gods of Moab, and the
gods of the children of
Ammon, and the
gods of the Philistines, and
forsook the LORD, and served not him.
And again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD. They served the Baals, the Ashtoreths, the
gods of
Aram,
Sidon, and Moab, and the
gods of the
Ammonites and Philistines. Thus they
forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.
And the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, saying, We have
sinned against thee, both because we have
forsaken our
God, and also served
Baalim.
Then the Israelites
cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have
sinned against You, for we have indeed
forsaken our
God and served the Baals.”
Yet ye have
forsaken me, and served other
gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
But you have
forsaken Me and served other
gods, so I will no longer save you.
Go and cry unto the
gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your
tribulation.
Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you in your time of trouble.”
And they put away the strange
gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was
grieved for the misery of Israel.
So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.
And the LORD
God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they
smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the
Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
Then the LORD, the
God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, who defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the
Amorites who inhabited that country,
So now the LORD
God of Israel hath dispossessed the
Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
Now since the LORD, the
God of Israel, has driven out the
Amorites from before His people Israel, should you now possess it?
Wilt not thou possess that which
Chemosh thy
god giveth thee to possess? So
whomsoever the LORD our
God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
Do you not possess whatever your
god Chemosh grants you? So also, we possess whatever the LORD our
God has granted us.
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no
razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a
Nazarite unto
God from the
womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no
razor shall come over his head, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to
God from the
womb, and he will begin the
deliverance of Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and told her husband, “A man of
God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of
God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name.
But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a
Nazarite to
God from the
womb to the day of his death.
But he said to me, ‘Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to
God from the
womb until the day of his death.’”
Then
Manoah intreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of
God which thou
didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.
Then
Manoah prayed to the LORD, “Please, O Lord, let the man of
God You sent us come to us again to teach us how to raise the boy who is to be born.”
And
God hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of
God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but
Manoah her husband was not with her.
And
God listened to the voice of
Manoah, and the angel of
God returned to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but her husband
Manoah was not with her.
And
Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen
God.
“We are going to die,” he said to his wife, “for we have seen God!”
But
God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So
God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto
God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to
God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto
Dagon their
god, and to
rejoice: for they said, Our
god hath delivered
Samson our enemy into our hand.
Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to their
god Dagon. They
rejoiced and said, “Our
god has delivered
Samson our enemy into our hands.”
And when the people saw him, they praised their
god: for they said, Our
god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which
slew many of us.
And when the people saw him, they praised their god, saying: “Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy who destroyed our land and multiplied our dead.”
And
Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord
GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and
strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O
God, that I may be at once
avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then
Samson called out to the LORD: “O Lord
GOD, please remember me.
Strengthen me, O
God, just once more, so that with one
vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
And the man
Micah had an house of
gods, and made an
ephod, and
teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.
Now this man
Micah had a
shrine, and he made an
ephod and some household idols, and ordained one of his sons as his priest.
And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God to determine whether we will have a successful journey.”
When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
When you enter, you will come to an
unsuspecting people and a
spacious land, for
God has delivered it into your hand. It is a place where nothing on earth is lacking.”
Then answered the five men that went to
spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an
ephod, and
teraphim, and a
graven image, and a
molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to
spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, “Did you know that one of these houses has an
ephod, household
gods, a
graven image, and a
molten idol? Now think about what you should do.”
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And they set them up
Micah’s
graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of
God was in
Shiloh.
So they set up for themselves
Micah’s
graven image, and it was there the whole time the house of
God was in
Shiloh.
And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of
God, four hundred thousand
footmen that drew sword.
The leaders of all the people and all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of God’s people: 400,000 men on foot, armed with swords.
And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
The Israelites set out, went up to
Bethel, and inquired of
God, “Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be first,” the LORD replied.
Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of
God, and
wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to
Bethel, where they sat
weeping before the LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD.
And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there,
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of
God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
And the people came to the house of
God, and abode there till even before
God, and lifted up their voices, and
wept sore;
So the people came to
Bethel and sat there before
God until evening, lifting up their voices and
weeping bitterly.
And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
“Why, O LORD
God of Israel,” they
cried out, “has this happened in Israel?
Today in Israel one tribe is missing!”
And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
“Look,” said
Naomi, “your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her
gods; follow her back home.”
And
Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for
whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will
lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy
God my
God:
But
Ruth replied: “Do not
urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your
God will be my
God.
The LORD
recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD
God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge.”
Then
Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the
God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
“Go in peace,”
Eli replied, “and may the
God of Israel grant the petition you have asked of Him.”
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a
God of knowledge, and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a
God who knows, and by Him actions are
weighed.
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they
hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would
slay them.
If a man sins against another man,
God can
intercede for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can
intercede for him?” But they would not
listen to their father, since the LORD intended to put them to death.
And there came a man of
God unto
Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
Then a man of
God came to
Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly
reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?
Wherefore the LORD
God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that
despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Therefore, the LORD, the
God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me
forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who
despise Me will be
disdained.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my
habitation, in all the wealth which
God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
You will see distress in My dwelling place.
Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age.
And
ere the lamp of
God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of
God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
Before the lamp of
God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of
God was
located.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
“What was the message He gave you?”
Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May
God punish you, and ever so severely, if you hide from me anything He said to you.”
So the people sent to
Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of
God.
So the people sent men to
Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the
cherubim. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of
God.
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said,
God is come into the camp. And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The
gods have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty
Gods? these are the
Gods that
smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty
gods? These are the
gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
And the ark of
God was taken; and the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were slain.
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of
God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of
God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And the
messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also,
Hophni and
Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of
God is taken.
The
messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of
God has been captured.”
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of
God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of
God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of
God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of
God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
“The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “for the ark of God has been captured.”
And the Philistines took the ark of
God, and brought it from Eben-ezer unto
Ashdod.
After the Philistines had captured the ark of
God, they took it from
Ebenezer to
Ashdod,
When the Philistines took the ark of
God, they brought it into the house of
Dagon, and set it by
Dagon.
carried it into the temple of
Dagon, and set it beside his statue.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the
God of Israel shall not
abide with us: for his hand is
sore upon us, and upon
Dagon our
god.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the
God of Israel must not stay here with us, because His hand is heavy upon us and upon our
god Dagon.”
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the
God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the
God of Israel be carried about unto
Gath. And they carried the ark of the
God of Israel about thither.
So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the
God of Israel?” “It must be moved to
Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the
God of Israel.
Therefore they sent the ark of
God to
Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of
God came to
Ekron, that the Ekronites
cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the
God of Israel to us, to
slay us and our people.
So they sent the ark of
God to
Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites
cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the
God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the
God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of
God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the
God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of
God was heavy upon it.
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the
God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
They replied, “If you return the ark of the
God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”
Wherefore ye shall make images of your
emerods, and images of your
mice that
mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the
God of Israel:
peradventure he will
lighten his hand from off you, and from off your
gods, and from off your land.
Make images of your tumors and of the rats that are
ravaging the land. Give glory to the
God of Israel, and perhaps He will lift His hand from you and your
gods and your land.
