By faith
Abel offered unto
God a more excellent sacrifice than
Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous,
God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
By faith
Abel offered
God a better sacrifice than
Cain did. By faith he was
commended as righteous when
God gave
approval to his gifts. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.
By faith
Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because
God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased
God.
By faith
Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: “He could not be found, because
God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was
commended as one who pleased
God.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to
God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that
diligently seek him.
And without faith it is impossible to please
God, because
anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.
By faith
Noah, being
warned of
God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
By faith
Noah, when
warned about things not yet seen, in
godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore
God is not
ashamed to be called their
God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Instead, they were longing for a better country, a heavenly one. Therefore
God is not
ashamed to be called their
God, for He has prepared a city for them.
Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
even though God had said to him, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”
Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death.
Choosing rather to suffer
affliction with the people of
God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
He chose to suffer oppression with God’s people rather than to experience the fleeting enjoyment of sin.
God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
God had
planned something better for us, so that together with us they would be made perfect.
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him
endured the cross,
despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of
God.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him
endured the cross,
scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of
God.
If ye
endure chastening,
God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Endure suffering as discipline;
God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?
For they
verily for a few days
chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his
holiness.
Our fathers disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but
God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His
holiness.
Looking
diligently lest any man fail of the grace of
God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be
defiled;
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of
God, and that no root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and
defile many.
See to it that no one is sexually immoral, or is
godless like
Esau, who for a single meal sold his
birthright.
But ye are come unto mount
Sion, and unto the city of the living
God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
Instead, you have come to Mount
Zion, to the city of the living
God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to myriads of angels
To the general assembly and church of the
firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to
God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
in joyful assembly, to the congregation of the
firstborn,
enrolled in heaven. You have come to
God the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve
God acceptably with reverence and
godly fear:
Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed
undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers
God will judge.
Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed kept
undefiled, for
God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.
Let your conversation be without
covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor
forsake thee.
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for
God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I
forsake you.”
Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
Remember your leaders who spoke the word of
God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and
imitate their faith.
By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to
God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving
thanks to his name.
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to
God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that
confess His name.
But to do good and to communicate
forget not: for with such sacrifices
God is well pleased.
And do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Now the
God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great
shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the
everlasting covenant,
Now may the
God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great
Shepherd of the sheep,
James, a servant of
God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad,
greeting.
James, a servant of
God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes of the
Dispersion: Greetings.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
Blessed is the man that endureth
temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.
Let no man say when he is
tempted, I am
tempted of
God: for
God cannot be
tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
Pure religion and
undefiled before
God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their
affliction, and to keep himself
unspotted from the world.
Pure and
undefiled religion before our
God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep
oneself from being
polluted by the world.
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not
God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not
God chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and to
inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him?
Thou believest that there is one
God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and
tremble.
You believe that
God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and
shudder.
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called a friend of God.
With the tongue we
bless our Lord and Father, and with it we
curse men, who have been made in
God’s likeness.
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is
enmity with
God?
whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of
God.
You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward
God? Therefore,
whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of
God.
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Submit
yourselves therefore to
God. Resist the devil, and he will
flee from you.
Submit
yourselves, then, to
God. Resist the devil, and he will
flee from you.
Draw
nigh to
God, and he will draw
nigh to you.
Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and
purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Draw near to
God, and He will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and
purify your hearts, you double-minded.
according to the
foreknowledge of
God the Father and
sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and
sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
Blessed be the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath
begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
Through Him you believe in
God, who raised Him from the dead and
glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in
God.
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and
enduring word of
God.
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight,
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should
shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for
God’s own possession, to
proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His
marvelous light.
Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Having your conversation
honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold,
glorify God in the day of
visitation.
Conduct
yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they
slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and
glorify God on the day He visits us.
For so is the will of
God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of
foolish men:
For it is
God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of
foolish men.
As free, and not using your liberty for a
cloke of
maliciousness, but as the servants of
God.
Live in freedom, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.
Honour all men. Love the
brotherhood. Fear
God. Honour the king.
For if
anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of
God, this is to be
commended.
For what glory is it, if, when ye be
buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with
God.
How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you
endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you
endure it, this is
commendable before
God.
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a
meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of
God of great price.
but from the inner disposition of your heart, the
unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in
God’s sight.
For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
For this is how the holy women of the past adorned themselves. They put their hope in
God and were
submissive to their husbands,
But
sanctify the Lord
God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with
meekness and fear:
But in your hearts
sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a
defense to
everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But
respond with gentleness and respect,
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to
God, being put to death in the flesh, but
quickened by the Spirit:
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit,
Which
sometime were
disobedient, when once the
longsuffering of
God waited in the days of
Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
who disobeyed long ago when
God waited patiently in the days of
Noah while the ark was being built. In the ark a few people, only eight souls, were saved through water.
The like figure
whereunto even baptism
doth also now save us (not the putting away of the
filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward
God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of
dirt from the body, but the
pledge of a clear conscience toward
God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him.
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
Consequently, he does not live out his remaining time on earth for human passions, but for the will of God.
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
That is why the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the
manifold grace of
God.
As good stewards of the
manifold grace of
God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another.
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of
God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which
God giveth: that
God in all things may be
glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever.
Amen.
If
anyone speaks, he should speak as one conveying the words of
God. If
anyone serves, he should serve with the strength
God provides, so that in all things
God may be
glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power
forever and ever.
Amen.
If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of
God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is
glorified.
If you are
insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of
God rests on you.
Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be
ashamed; but let him
glorify God on this behalf.
But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be
ashamed, but
glorify God that you bear that name.
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?
Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of
God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful
Creator.
So then, those who suffer according to
God’s will should
entrust their souls to their faithful
Creator and continue to do good.
Feed the flock of
God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by
constraint, but willingly; not for
filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
Be
shepherds of
God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of
compulsion, but because it is
God’s will; not out of
greed, but out of eagerness;
Neither as being lords over
God’s
heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
Likewise, ye younger, submit
yourselves unto the elder.
Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with
humility: for
God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
Young men, in the same way, submit
yourselves to your elders. And all of you,
clothe yourselves with
humility toward one another, because, “
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Humble
yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of
God, that he may
exalt you in due time:
Humble
yourselves, therefore, under
God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may
exalt you.
But the
God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect,
stablish,
strengthen, settle you.
And after you have suffered for a little while, the
God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you,
strengthen you, and establish you.
By
Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly,
exhorting, and
testifying that this is the true grace of
God wherein ye stand.
Through
Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,
encouraging you and
testifying that this is the true grace of
God. Stand firm in it.
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our
God and
Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that
pertain unto life and
godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and
godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
And to
godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
and to
godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
For He received honor and glory from
God the Father when the voice came to Him from the
Majestic Glory, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
For if
God spared not the angels that
sinned, but cast them down to
hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
For if
God did not
spare the angels when they
sinned, but cast them deep into
hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to
rescue the
godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
But they
deliberately overlook the fact that long ago by
God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water,
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and
godliness,
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct
yourselves in
holiness and
godliness Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of
God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall
melt with
fervent heat?
as you
anticipate and
hasten the coming of the day of
God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will
melt in the heat.
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
But in keeping with God’s promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
And account that the
longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
Consider also that our Lord’s
patience brings salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom
God gave him.
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
And this is the message we have heard from Him and
announce to you:
God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
But
whoso keepeth his word, in him
verily is the love of
God perfected:
hereby know we that we are in him.
But if
anyone keeps His word, the love of
God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him:
I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
And the world passeth away, and the
lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of
God abideth for ever.
The world is passing away, along with its desires; but
whoever does the will of
God remains
forever.
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
Beloved, now are we the sons of
God, and it
doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been
sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of
God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
Whosoever is born of
God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of
God.
Anyone born of
God refuses to practice sin, because
God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on
sinning, because he has been born of
God.
In this the children of
God are manifest, and the children of the devil:
whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of
God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
By this the children of
God are distinguished from the children of the devil:
Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of
God, nor is
anyone who does not love his brother.
Hereby perceive we the love of
God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
