And I will
tread down the people in mine anger, and make them
drunk in my
fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
I
trampled the nations in My anger; in My wrath I made them
drunk and poured out their blood on the
ground.”
For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your
fallow ground, and
sow not among thorns.
For this is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: “Break up your
unplowed ground, and do not
sow among the thorns.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my
fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the
ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be
quenched.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, My anger and My
fury will be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the trees of the field and the produce of the land, and it will burn and not be
extinguished.
And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
They will be exposed to the sun and moon, and to all the host of heaven which they have loved, served, followed, consulted, and worshiped. Their bones will not be gathered up or buried, but will become like dung lying on the ground.
Many pastors have destroyed my
vineyard, they have
trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a
desolate wilderness.
Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof
languish; they are black unto the
ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
“Judah mourns and her gates
languish. Her people
wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
Because the
ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were
ashamed, they covered their heads.
The
ground is
cracked because no rain has fallen on the land. The farmers are
ashamed; they cover their heads.
They shall die of
grievous deaths; they shall not be
lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
“They will die from deadly diseases. They will not be
mourned or buried, but will lie like dung on the
ground. They will be finished off by sword and famine, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and beasts of the earth.”
And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be
lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the
ground.
Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be
mourned, gathered, or buried. They will be like dung lying on the
ground.
I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.
By My great power and outstretched arm, I made the earth and the men and beasts on the face of it, and I give it to whom I please.
Also her
hired men are in the midst of her like
fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their
calamity was come upon them, and the time of their
visitation.
Even the
mercenaries among her are like
fattened calves. They too will turn back; together they will
flee, they will not stand their
ground, for the day of
calamity is coming upon them— the time of their punishment.
Thou daughter that
dost inhabit Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in
thirst; for the
spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong holds.
Come down from your glory; sit on
parched ground, O daughter dwelling in Dibon, for the destroyer of Moab has come against you; he has destroyed your fortresses.
The Lord hath
swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not
pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the
ground: he hath
polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.
Without
pity the Lord has
swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob. In His wrath He has
demolished the fortified cities of the Daughter of Judah. He brought to the
ground and
defiled her kingdom and its princes.
Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.
Her gates have sunk into the
ground; He has destroyed and
shattered their bars. Her king and her princes are exiled among the nations, the law is no more, and even her prophets find no vision from the LORD.
The elders of the daughter of
Zion sit upon the
ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have
girded themselves with
sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem
hang down their heads to the
ground.
The elders of the Daughter of
Zion sit on the
ground in silence. They have thrown dust on their heads and put on
sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the
ground.
The young and the old lie on the
ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not
pitied.
Both young and old lie together in the dust of the streets. My young men and maidens have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of Your anger; You have slaughtered them without
compassion.
He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
He has
ground my teeth with gravel and
trampled me in the dust.
Now as I
beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.
When I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces.
And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
So as the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them, and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose.
When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
When the creatures moved, the wheels moved; when the creatures stood still, the wheels stood still; and when the creatures rose from the
ground, the wheels rose
alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
And when the cherubims went, the wheels went by them: and when the cherubims lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the same wheels also turned not from beside them.
When the
cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and even when they spread their wings to rise from the
ground, the wheels did not
veer away from their side.
And the cherubims lifted up their wings, and mounted up from the earth in my sight: when they went out, the wheels also were beside them, and every one stood at the door of the east gate of the LORD’S house; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.
As I watched, the
cherubim lifted their wings and rose up from the
ground, with the wheels beside them as they went. And they stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, with the glory of the God of Israel above them.
In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulders, and carry it forth in the
twilight: thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the
ground: for I have set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.
And as they watch, lift your bags to your shoulder and take them out at
dusk; cover your face so that you cannot see the land. For I have made you a sign to the house of Israel.”
And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the
twilight, and shall go forth: they shall
dig through the wall to carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, that he see not the
ground with his eyes.
And at
dusk the prince among them will lift his bags to his shoulder and go out. They will
dig through the wall to bring him out. He will cover his face so he cannot see the land.
So will I break down the wall that ye have
daubed with untempered
morter, and bring it down to the
ground, so that the foundation thereof shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and ye shall be consumed in the midst thereof: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
I will
tear down the wall you
whitewashed and level it to the
ground, so that its foundation is exposed. The city will fall, and you will be destroyed within it. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
But she was
plucked up in
fury, she was cast down to the
ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and
withered; the fire consumed them.
But it was uprooted in
fury, cast down to the
ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches were
stripped off and they
withered; the fire consumed them.
And now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and
thirsty ground.
Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and
thirsty land.
For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;
For the blood she shed is still within her; she poured it out on the bare rock; she did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust.
With the
hoofs of his horses shall he
tread down all thy streets: he shall
slay thy people by the sword, and thy strong garrisons shall go down to the
ground.
The
hooves of his horses will
trample all your streets. He will slaughter your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the
ground.
Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their
broidered garments: they shall
clothe themselves with
trembling; they shall sit upon the
ground, and shall
tremble at every moment, and be
astonished at thee.
All the princes of the sea will descend from their thrones, remove their robes, and strip off their
embroidered garments. Clothed with terror, they will sit on the
ground,
trembling every moment,
appalled over you.
Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
Your heart grew proud of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom because of your
splendor; so I cast you to the earth; I made you a
spectacle before kings.
Thou hast
defiled thy
sanctuaries by the multitude of thine
iniquities, by the iniquity of thy
traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall
devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
By the multitude of your
iniquities and the
dishonesty of your trading you have
profaned your
sanctuaries. So I made fire come from within you, and it consumed you. I reduced you to ashes on the
ground in the eyes of all who saw you.
So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all
creeping things that
creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall
shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the
ground.
The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that crawls upon the
ground, and all mankind on the face of the earth will
tremble at My presence. The mountains will be thrown down, the cliffs will
collapse, and every wall will fall to the
ground.
And they shall
sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to
bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to
cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
And men will be employed to continually pass through the land to
cleanse it by
burying the invaders who remain on the
ground. At the end of the seven months they will begin their search.
The door posts, and the narrow windows, and the
galleries round about on their three stories, over against the door, cieled with wood round about, and from the
ground up to the windows, and the windows were covered;
as well as the thresholds and the
beveled windows and the
galleries all around with their three levels opposite the
threshold, were overlaid with wood on all sides. They were
paneled from the
ground to the windows, and the windows were covered.
From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm trees made, and on the wall of the temple.
Cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the outer sanctuary from the floor to the space above the entrance.
For they were in three stories, but had not pillars as the pillars of the courts: therefore the building was
straitened more than the lowest and the
middlemost from the
ground.
For they were arranged in three stories, and unlike the courts, they had no pillars. So the upper chambers were set back further than the lower and middle floors.
And from the bottom upon the
ground even to the lower settle shall be two cubits, and the breadth one
cubit; and from the lesser settle even to the greater settle shall be four cubits, and the breadth one
cubit.
The space from the
gutter on the
ground to the lower
ledge shall be two cubits, and the
ledge one
cubit wide. The space from the smaller
ledge to the larger
ledge shall be four cubits, and the
ledge one
cubit wide.
Nevertheless leave the
stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the
dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:
But leave the
stump with its roots in the
ground, and a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be
drenched with the
dew of heaven and
graze with the beasts on the grass of the earth.
And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying,
Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the
stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the
dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;
And you, O king, saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying: ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the
stump with its roots in the
ground, and a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be
drenched with the
dew of heaven, and
graze with the beasts of the field till seven times pass him by.’
The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings: I
beheld till the wings thereof were
plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.
The first beast was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were
torn off and it was lifted up from the
ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and given the mind of a man.
And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.
As I was
contemplating all this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between his eyes came out of the west, crossing the surface of the entire earth without touching the
ground.
And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with
choler against him, and
smote the ram, and
brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the
ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.
I saw him approach the ram in a
rage against him, and he struck the ram and
shattered his two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against him, and the goat threw him to the
ground and
trampled him, and no one could deliver the ram from his power.
And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
It grew as high as the host of heaven, and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the earth, and
trampled them.
And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of
transgression, and it cast down the truth to the
ground; and it practised, and
prospered.
And in the rebellion, the host and the daily sacrifice were given over to the horn, and it
flung truth to the
ground and
prospered in whatever it did.
Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.
While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me, helped me to my feet,
Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.
I heard the sound of his words, and as I
listened, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the
ground.
And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the
ground, and I became
dumb.
While he was speaking these words to me, I set my face toward the ground and became speechless.
And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the
creeping things of the
ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
On that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the creatures that
crawl on the
ground. And I will
abolish bow and sword and weapons of war in the land, and will make them lie down in safety.
And Ephraim is as an
heifer that is taught, and loveth to
tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to
ride; Judah shall
plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.
Ephraim is a well-trained
heifer that loves to
thresh; but I will place a yoke on her fair neck. I will
harness Ephraim, Judah will
plow, and Jacob will break the hard
ground.
Sow to
yourselves in righteousness,
reap in mercy; break up your
fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.
Sow for
yourselves righteousness and
reap the fruit of loving devotion; break up your
unplowed ground. For it is time to seek the LORD until He comes and sends righteousness upon you like rain.
Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
The archer will not stand his
ground, the fleet of foot will not escape, and the
horseman will not save his life.
Can a bird fall in a
snare upon the earth, where no
gin is for him? shall one take up a
snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
Does a bird land in a
snare where no
bait has been set? Does a
trap spring from the
ground when it has nothing to catch?
That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of
Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the
ground.
On the day I
punish Israel for their transgressions, I will visit destruction on the altars of
Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the
ground.
Ye who turn judgment to
wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,
There are those who turn justice into
wormwood and cast righteousness to the
ground.
For, lo, I will command, and I will
sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is
sifted in a
sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.
“For surely I will give the command, and I will
shake the house of Israel among all the nations as grain is
sifted in a
sieve; but not a
pebble will reach the
ground.
The pride of thine heart hath
deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose
habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the
ground?
The pride of your heart has
deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks whose
habitation is the heights, who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the
ground?’
They shall
lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of thee.
They will
lick the dust like a
snake, like reptiles slithering on the
ground. They will
crawl from their holes in the presence of the LORD our God; they will
tremble in fear of You.
Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s
whelp, and none made them afraid?
Where is the lions’
lair or the feeding
ground of the young lions, where the lion and
lioness prowled with their cubs, with nothing to
frighten them away?
And I called for a
drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the
ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.
I have summoned a
drought on the fields and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil, and on whatever the
ground yields, on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.”
For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the
ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their
dew; and I will cause the
remnant of this people to possess all these things.
“For the seed will be prosperous, the vine will yield its fruit, the
ground will yield its produce, and the
skies will give their
dew. To the
remnant of this people I will give all these things as an inheritance.
And I will
rebuke the
devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your
ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will
rebuke the
devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of Hosts.
Are not two sparrows sold for a
farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the
ground without your Father.
Are not two sparrows sold for a
penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the
ground apart from the will of your Father.
Some fell upon
stony places, where they had not much earth: and
forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
Some fell on rocky
ground, where it did not have much soil. It
sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.
But other fell into good
ground, and brought forth fruit, some an
hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
Still other seed fell on good soil and produced a crop—a
hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold.
But he that received the seed into
stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and
anon with joy receiveth it;
The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
But he that received seed into the good
ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an
hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
But the seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and produces a crop—a
hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold.”
And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
And He
instructed the crowd to sit down on the
ground.
But he that had received one went and
digged in the earth, and
hid his lord’s money.
But the servant who had received the one talent went off,
dug a hole in the
ground, and
hid his master’s money.
And I was afraid, and went and
hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
So I was afraid and went out and
hid your talent in the
ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’
And some fell on
stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it
sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
Some fell on rocky
ground, where it did not have much soil. It
sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.
And other fell on good
ground, and did yield fruit that
sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
Still other seed fell on good soil, where it
sprouted, grew up, and produced a crop—one bearing thirtyfold, another sixtyfold, and another a
hundredfold.”
And these are they likewise which are sown on
stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with
gladness;
Some are like the seeds sown on rocky ground. They hear the word and at once receive it with joy.
And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
Still others are like the seeds sown on good soil. They hear the word, receive it, and produce a crop—thirtyfold, sixtyfold, or a
hundredfold.”
And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
Jesus also said, “The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed on the ground.
And he commanded the people to sit down on the
ground: and he took the seven
loaves, and gave
thanks, and
brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.
And He
instructed the crowd to sit down on the
ground. Then He took the seven
loaves, gave
thanks and broke them, and gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And they distributed them to the crowd.
And
wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”
So they brought him, and seeing Jesus, the spirit immediately threw the boy into a
convulsion. He fell to the
ground and rolled around,
foaming at the mouth.
And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him.
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat
vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on
ground without a foundation. The
torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great was its destruction!”
And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it
withered away, because it lacked moisture.
Some fell on rocky
ground, and when it came up, the seedlings
withered because they had no moisture.
And other fell on good
ground, and
sprang up, and bare fruit an
hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he
cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Still other seed fell on good soil, where it
sprang up and produced a crop—a
hundredfold.” As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of
temptation fall away.
The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root. They believe for a season, but in the time of testing, they fall away.
But that on the good
ground are they, which in an
honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with
patience.
But the seeds on good soil are those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word,
cling to it, and by
persevering produce a crop.
And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and
tare him. And Jesus
rebuked the unclean spirit, and
healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
Even while the boy was approaching, the
demon slammed him to the
ground in a
convulsion. But Jesus
rebuked the unclean spirit,
healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The
ground of a certain rich man brought forth
plentifully:
Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance.
Then said he unto the dresser of his
vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the
ground?
So he said to the keeper of the
vineyard, ‘Look, for the past three years I have come to search for fruit on this fig tree and
haven’t found any. Therefore cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
And they all with one consent began to make
excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of
ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me
excused.
But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first one said, ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go see it. Please
excuse me.’
And shall lay thee even with the
ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy
visitation.
They will level you to the
ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your
visitation from God.”
And being in an
agony he prayed more earnestly: and his
sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the
ground.
And in His
anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His
sweat became like drops of blood falling to the
ground.
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
As the women bowed their faces to the ground in terror, the two men asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the
parcel of
ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
This they said,
tempting him, that they might have to
accuse him. But Jesus
stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the
ground, as though he heard them not.
They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for
accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the
ground with His finger.
And again he
stooped down, and wrote on the
ground.
And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
When he had thus spoken, he
spat on the

Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your

He fell to the
