Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the
heathen, and against all
Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with
despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Surely in My burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all
Edom, who took My land as their own possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, so that its pastureland became
plunder.
Prophesy therefore concerning the land of Israel, and say unto the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my
fury, because ye have borne the shame of the
heathen:
Therefore,
prophesy concerning the land of Israel and tell the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys, that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I have spoken in My burning zeal because you have
endured the reproach of the nations.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I have lifted up mine hand, Surely the heathen that are about you, they shall bear their shame.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I have
sworn with an
uplifted hand that surely the nations around you will
endure reproach of their own.
Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the heathen any more, neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the people any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nations to fall any more, saith the Lord GOD.
I will no longer allow the taunts of the nations to be heard against you, and you will no longer
endure the reproach of the peoples or cause your nation to
stumble, declares the Lord GOD.”
And I scattered them among the
heathen, and they were
dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them.
I
dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered throughout the lands. I judged them according to their ways and deeds.
And when they entered unto the
heathen,
whither they went, they
profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land.
And wherever they went among the nations, they
profaned My holy name, because it was said of them, ‘These are the people of the LORD, yet they had to leave His land.’
But I had
pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had
profaned among the
heathen,
whither they went.
But I had
concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had
profaned among the nations to which they had gone.
Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name’s sake, which ye have
profaned among the
heathen,
whither ye went.
Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: It is not for your sake that I will act, O house of Israel, but for My holy name, which you
profaned among the nations to which you went.
And I will
sanctify my great name, which was
profaned among the
heathen, which ye have
profaned in the midst of them; and the
heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be
sanctified in you before their eyes.
I will show the
holiness of My great name, which has been
profaned among the nations—the name you have
profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when I show My
holiness in you before their eyes.
For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.
For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries, and I will bring you back into your own land.
And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.
I will also make the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field
plentiful, so that you will no longer bear reproach among the nations on account of famine.
Then the
heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was
desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it.
Then the nations around you that remain will know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt what was destroyed, and I have replanted what was
desolate. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it.
And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the
heathen,
whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will take the Israelites out of the nations to which they have gone, and I will gather them from all around and bring them into their own land.
And the
heathen shall know that I the LORD do
sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for
evermore.
Then the nations will know that I the LORD
sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is among them
forever.’”
And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the
heathen may know me, when I shall be
sanctified in thee, O
Gog, before their eyes.
You will advance against My people Israel like a cloud covering the land. It will happen in the latter days, O
Gog, that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me when I show Myself holy in you before their eyes.
So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them
pollute my holy name any more: and the
heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
So I will make My holy name known among My people Israel and will no longer allow it to be
profaned. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
I will display My glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the judgment that I
execute and the hand that I lay upon them.
And the
heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they
trespassed against me, therefore
hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
And the nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile for their iniquity, because they were unfaithful to Me. So I
hid My face from them and delivered them into the hands of their enemies, so that they all fell by the sword.
Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
Then they will know that I am the LORD their God, when I regather them to their own land, not leaving any of them behind after their exile among the nations.
Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD,
weep between the
porch and the altar, and let them say,
Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine
heritage to reproach, that the
heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
Let the priests who minister before the LORD
weep between the
portico and the altar, saying, “
Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not make Your
heritage a reproach, an object of
scorn among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied
therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the
heathen:
And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and by them you will be satisfied. I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye
heathen, and gather
yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.
Come quickly, all you surrounding nations, and gather
yourselves. Bring down Your mighty ones, O LORD.
Let the
heathen be
wakened, and come up to the valley of
Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the
heathen round about.
Let the nations be
roused and advance to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.
That they may possess the
remnant of
Edom, and of all the
heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.
that they may possess the
remnant of
Edom and all the nations that bear My name,” declares the LORD, who will do this.
The vision of
Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning
Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the
heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
This is the vision of
Obadiah: This is what the Lord GOD says about
Edom— We have heard a message from the LORD; an
envoy has been sent among the nations to say, “Rise up, and let us go to battle against her!”—
Behold, I have made thee small among the
heathen: thou art greatly
despised.
“Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you will be deeply
despised.
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your
recompense will return upon your own head.
For as ye have
drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the
heathen drink continually,
yea, they shall drink, and they shall
swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
For as you
drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and
gulp it down; they will be as if they had never existed.
I will take
vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations that have not obeyed Me.”
Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.
“Look at the nations and observe— be utterly
astounded! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe even if someone told you.
You marched across the earth with
fury; You
threshed the nations in wrath.
The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will
famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the
heathen.
The LORD will be
terrifying to them when He starves all the gods of the earth. Then the nations of every shore will bow in worship to Him, each in its own place.
And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the
heathen; and I will overthrow the
chariots, and those that
ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn
chariots and their riders; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
And I am very
sore displeased with the
heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the
affliction.
but I am fiercely
angry with the nations that are at ease. For I was a little
angry, but they have added to the
calamity.’
And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a
curse among the
heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong.
As you have been a
curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing. Do not be afraid; let your hands be strong.”
And I will cut off the
chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the
heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from river even to the ends of the earth.
And I will cut off the
chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem, and the bow of war will be broken. Then He will
proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion will extend from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.
And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the
heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and
apparel, in great abundance.
Judah will also fight at Jerusalem, and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected—gold, silver, and
apparel in great abundance.
And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague,
wherewith the LORD will
smite the
heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
And if the people of Egypt will not go up and enter in, then the rain will not fall on them; this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not go up to
celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.
For My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place, incense and pure offerings will be presented in My name, because My name will be great among the nations,” says the LORD of Hosts.
But
cursed be the
deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the LORD a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is
dreadful among the
heathen.
“But
cursed is the
deceiver who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but sacrifices a defective animal to the Lord. For I am a great King,” says the LORD of Hosts, “and My name is to be feared among the nations.
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
And when you pray, do not
babble on like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard.
And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an
heathen man and a
publican.
If he refuses to
listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to
listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax
collector.
Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the
heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations
rage and the peoples plot in vain?
In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
In my frequent journeys, I have been in danger from rivers and from
bandits, in danger from my countrymen and from the Gentiles, in danger in the city and in the country, in danger on the sea and among false brothers,
To
reveal his Son in me, that I might
preach him among the
heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
to
reveal His Son in me so that I might
preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not
rush to
consult with flesh and blood,
And when James,
Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and
Barnabas the right hands of
fellowship; that we should go unto the
heathen, and they unto the
circumcision.
And recognizing the grace that I had been given, James,
Cephas, and John—those reputed to be pillars—gave me and
Barnabas the right hand of
fellowship, so that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the
circumcised.
And the scripture,
foreseeing that God would
justify the
heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
The Scripture foresaw that God would
justify the Gentiles by faith, and
foretold the gospel to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”
But the
heathen of the land lying heavy upon the inhabitants of
Judea, and holding them strait, hindered their building;
Let us make an oath to the Lord, that we will put away all our wives, which we have taken of the heathen, with their children,
And do his will, and separate
yourselves from the
heathen of the land, and from the strange women.
Let them be scattered abroad among the
heathen, let their names be put out of the earth: for they have
despised my covenant.
The
heathen shall
envy thee, but they shall be able to do nothing against thee, saith the Lord.
And therefore I say unto you, O ye
heathen, that hear and understand, look for your
Shepherd, he shall give you
everlasting rest; for he is
nigh at hand, that shall come in the end of the world.
And yet their reward appeareth not, and their labour hath no fruit: for I have gone here and there through the heathen, and I see that they flow in wealth, and think not upon thy commandments.
Thou shalt find that Israel by name hath kept thy precepts; but not the heathen.
For it was not my mind to be curious of the high things, but of such as pass by us daily, namely, wherefore Israel is given up as a reproach to the
heathen, and for what cause the people whom thou hast loved is given over unto ungodly nations, and why the law of our forefathers is brought to
nought, and the written covenants come to none effect,
And now, O Lord, behold, these
heathen, which have ever been reputed as nothing, have begun to be lords over us, and to
devour us.
Regard not the wicked inventions of the
heathen, but the desire of those that keep thy
testimonies in afflictions.
But they took this counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitude of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt,
And open the mouths of the
heathen to set forth the praises of the idols, and to
magnify a fleshly king for ever.
Thou knowest all things, O Lord; thou knowest that I
hate the glory of the unrighteous, and
abhor the bed of the
uncircumcised, and of all the
heathen.
For they counted all the idols of the heathen to be gods: which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor fingers of hands to handle; and as for their feet, they are slow to go.
The Lord overthrew countries of the heathen, and destroyed them to the foundations of the earth.
For the Lord will not be
slack, neither will the Mighty be patient toward them, till he have
smitten in
sunder the loins of the
unmerciful, and repayed
vengeance to the
heathen; till he have taken away the multitude of the proud, and broken the
sceptre of the unrighteous;
Smite in
sunder the heads of the rulers of the
heathen, that say, There is none other but we.
As he hath turned the waters into saltness: so shall the
heathen inherit his wrath.
Let thy wrath turn from us: for we are but a few left among the heathen, where thou hast scattered us.
Where are the princes of the heathen become, and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth;
Neither can they
shew signs in the heavens among the
heathen, nor
shine as the sun, nor give light as the moon.
In those days went there out of Israel wicked men, who persuaded many, saying, Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us: for since we departed from them we have had much sorrow.
Then certain of the people were so forward
herein, that they went to the king, who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the
heathen:
Whereupon they built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the
heathen:
And made themselves
uncircumcised, and
forsook the holy covenant, and joined themselves to the
heathen, and were sold to do mischief.
And every one should leave his laws: so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king.
Now therefore come thou first, and fulfil the king’s commandment, like as all the
heathen have done,
yea, and the men of Juda also, and such as remain at Jerusalem: so shalt thou and thy house be in the number of the king’s friends, and thou and thy children shall be honoured with silver and gold, and many rewards.
And one of them said to another, If we all do as our brethren have done, and fight not for our lives and laws against the heathen, they will now quickly root us out of the earth.
So they joined their forces, and
smote sinful men in their anger, and wicked men in their wrath: but the rest fled to the
heathen for succour.
Recompense fully the
heathen, and take
heed to the commandments of the law.
Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was
trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the
heathen had their
habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the
harp ceased.
And laid open the book of the law, wherein the
heathen had sought to
paint the likeness of their images.
And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.
And they saw the camp of the
heathen, that it was strong and well
harnessed, and compassed round about with
horsemen; and these were
expert of war.
That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.
So they joined battle, and the
heathen being
discomfited fled into the plain.
They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the
heathen had
defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,
Look, at what time and what day the
heathen had
profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.
Thus was there very great
gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the
heathen was put away.
Then the heathen that were at Galaad assembled themselves together against the Israelites that were in their quarters, to destroy them; but they fled to the fortress of Dathema.
And sent letters unto
Judas and his brethren, The
heathen that are round about us are assembled together against us to destroy us:
Unto whom he gave commandment, saying, Take ye the charge of this people, and see that ye make not war against the heathen until the time that we come again.
Then went Simon into
Galilee, where he fought many battles with the
heathen, so that the
heathen were
discomfited by him.
And he pursued them unto the gate of
Ptolemais; and there were slain of the
heathen about three thousand men, whose spoils he took.
So
Judas sent men to
espy the host, who brought him word, saying, All the
heathen that be round about us are assembled unto them, even a very great host.
So he went first over unto them, and all the people after him: then all the
heathen, being
discomfited before him, cast away their weapons, and fled unto the temple that was at Carnaim.
Wherefore they said, Let us also get us a name, and go fight against the heathen that are round about us.
About this time they that were in the tower shut up the Israelites round about the sanctuary, and sought always their
hurt, and the
strengthening of the
heathen.
Now when
Judas saw all the mischief that Alcimus and his company had done among the Israelites, even above the
heathen,
After this, when king
Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the
heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers
hated him.
So there were slain of the
heathen that day about three thousand men: but
Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
