And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
And learning that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself was in Jerusalem at that time.
And when
Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding
glad: for he was
desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some
miracle done by him.
When
Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a
miracle.
Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
Herod questioned Jesus at great length, but He gave no answer.
And the same day
Pilate and
Herod were made friends together: for before they were at
enmity between themselves.
That day
Herod and
Pilate became friends; before this time they had been enemies.
Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things
whereof ye
accuse him:
and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was
inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him
here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him.
No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death.
He is not
here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in
Galilee,
He is not
here; He has risen! Remember how He told you while He was still in
Galilee:
And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and
amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything
here to eat?”
And he saith unto him,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you,
Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
“Woman, why does this
concern us?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of
merchandise.
To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of
here! How
dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!”
There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
When a
Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to
her, “Give Me a drink.”
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Jesus answered and said unto
her,
Whosoever drinketh of this water shall
thirst again:
The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I
thirst not, neither come
hither to draw.
The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get
thirsty and have to keep coming
here to draw water.”
Jesus saith unto
her, Go, call thy husband, and come
hither.
Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
“I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
“Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
And upon this came his disciples, and
marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with
her?
Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
The woman then left
her waterpot, and went
her way into the city, and saith to the men,
Then the woman left
her water
jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,
And
herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
There is a
lad here, which hath five barley
loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
“
Here is a boy with five barley
loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”
And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him,
Rabbi, when camest thou
hither?
When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “
Rabbi, when did You get
here?”
His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave
here and go to
Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.
But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
When they continued to question Him, He
straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at
her.”
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
Then Jesus
straightened up and asked
her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto
her, Neither do I
condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
“No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I
condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.
The man answered and said unto them, Why
herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
“That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
At this time a man named
Lazarus was sick. He lived in
Bethany, the village of Mary and
her sister
Martha.
Then said
Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been
here, my brother had not died.
Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been
here, my brother would not have died.
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
“Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
Jesus said to
her, “I am the resurrection and the life.
Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
After
Martha had said this, she went back and called
her sister Mary aside to tell
her, “The Teacher is
here and is asking for you.”
The Jews then which were with
her in the house, and comforted
her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up
hastily and went out, followed
her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to
weep there.
When the Jews who were in the house
consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed
her, supposing she was going to the tomb to
mourn there.
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
When Jesus therefore saw
her weeping, and the Jews also
weeping which came with
her, he
groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
When Jesus saw
her weeping, and the Jews who had come with
her also
weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.”
Then said Jesus, Let
her alone: against the day of my
burying hath she kept this.
“Leave
her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this
perfume in preparation for the day of My burial.
Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know
hereafter.
Jesus replied, “You do not
realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming, and he has no claim on Me.
But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
But I do exactly what the Father has commanded Me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up! Let us go on from here.
Herein is my Father
glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving
yourselves to be My disciples.
A woman when she is in
travail hath sorrow, because
her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the
anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
A woman has pain in
childbirth because
her time has come; but when she brings forth
her child, she forgets
her anguish because of
her joy that a child has been born into the world.
But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the
doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple
robe. And
Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple
robe,
Pilate said to them, “
Here is the man!”
And it was the preparation of the
passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
It was the day of Preparation for the
Passover, about the sixth hour. And
Pilate said to the Jews, “
Here is your King!”
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.”
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
“Woman, why are you
weeping?” they asked. “Because they have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I do not know where they have put Him.”
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; but she did not recognize that it was Jesus.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
“Woman, why are you
weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.”
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
Jesus saith unto
her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I
ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
“Do not
cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
Mary Magdalene went and
announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what He had said to
her.
Then saith he to Thomas, reach
hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach
hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Which also said, Ye men of
Galilee, why stand ye
gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
“Men of
Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand
here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of
Nazareth, whom ye
crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him
doth this man stand
here before you whole.
then let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of
Nazareth, whom you
crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you
healed.
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast
anointed, both
Herod, and Pontius
Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
In fact, this is the very city where
Herod and Pontius
Pilate conspired with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You
anointed.
And Peter answered unto
her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said,
Yea, for so much.
“Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “
Yes,” she answered, “that is the price.”
Then Peter said unto
her, How is it that ye have agreed together to
tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
“How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Peter replied. “Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
Then fell she down
straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found
her dead, and, carrying
her forth, buried
her by
her husband.
At that instant she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child.
And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and
nourished him for
her own son.
When he was set outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.
And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of
Ethiopia, an
eunuch of great authority under
Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all
her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
So he started out, and on his way he met an
Ethiopian eunuch, a court official in charge of the entire treasury of
Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. He had gone to Jerusalem to worship,
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the
eunuch said, See,
here is water; what
doth hinder me to be
baptized?
As they traveled along the road and came to some water, the
eunuch said, “Look,
here is water! What is there to prevent me from being
baptized?”
And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named
Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision,
Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am
here, Lord.
In Damascus there was a disciple named
Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, “
Ananias!” “
Here I am, Lord,” he answered.
And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
And now he is here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.”
And
Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
So
Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming
here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
But all that heard him were
amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came
hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
All who heard him were
astounded and asked, “Isn’t this the man who
wreaked havoc in Jerusalem on those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come
here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”
And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
At that time, however, she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upper room.
But Peter put them all forth, and
kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened
her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
Then Peter sent them all out of the room. He
knelt down and prayed, and turning toward
her body, he said, “Tabitha, get up!” She opened
her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up.
And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
Peter took her by the hand and helped her up. Then he called the saints and widows and presented her to them alive.
Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from
Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
So Peter went down to the men and said, “Here am I, the one you are looking for. Why have you come?”
Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
So I sent for you immediately, and you were kind enough to come. Now then, we are all
here in the presence of God to
listen to everything the Lord has
instructed you to tell us.”
Now about that time
Herod the king stretched forth his hands to
vex certain of the church.
About that time, King
Herod reached out to
harm some who belonged to the church.
And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of
unleavened bread.)
And seeing that this pleased the Jews,
Herod proceeded to seize Peter during the Feast of
Unleavened Bread.
And when he had
apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four
quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
He arrested him and put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each.
Herod intended to bring him out to the people after the
Passover.
And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance to the prison.
And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a
surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of
Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent His angel and
rescued me from
Herod’s
grasp and from everything the Jewish people were
anticipating.”
And they said unto
her, Thou art
mad. But she constantly
affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
“You are out of your mind,” they told
her. But when she kept
insisting it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.
After
Herod had searched for him unsuccessfully, he examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then he went down from
Judea to Caesarea and spent some time there.
And
Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and
Sidon: but they came with one
accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s
chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was
nourished by the king’s country.
Now
Herod was in a
furious dispute with the people of Tyre and
Sidon, and they
convened before him. Having secured the support of Blastus, the king’s
chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their region depended on the king’s country for food.
On the appointed day,
Herod donned his royal robes, sat on his throne, and addressed the people.
And immediately the angel of the Lord
smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
Immediately, because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as
Barnabas, and
Simeon that was called
Niger, and
Lucius of
Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with
Herod the
tetrarch, and Saul.
And they called
Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.
Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called
Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
And a certain woman named
Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of
Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
Among those
listening was a woman named
Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of
Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened
her heart to
respond to Paul’s message.
And when she was
baptized, and
her household, she
besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and
abide there. And she
constrained us.
And when she and
her household had been
baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain
damsel possessed with a spirit of
divination met us, which brought
her masters much gain by
soothsaying:
One day as we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave
girl with a spirit of
divination, who
earned a large income for
her masters by fortune-telling.
