And this did she many days. But Paul, being
grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of
her. And he came out the same hour.
She continued this for many days. Eventually Paul grew so
aggravated that he turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of
her!” And the spirit left
her at that very moment.
And when
her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and
Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,
When the
girl’s owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and
Silas and
dragged them before the authorities in the marketplace.
But Paul
cried with a loud voice, saying, Do
thyself no
harm: for we are all
here.
But Paul called out in a loud voice, “Do not
harm yourself! We are all
here!”
And when they found them not, they drew
Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world
upside down are come
hither also;
But when they could not find them, they
dragged Jason and some other brothers before the city officials,
shouting, “These men who have turned the world
upside down have now come
here,
So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at
nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess
Diana should be
despised, and
her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
There is danger not only that our business will fall into
disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and
her majesty
deposed—she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world.”
And when the townclerk had
appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the
Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess
Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
Finally the city clerk quieted the crowd and declared, “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t
everyone know that the city of Ephesus is
guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of
her image, which fell from heaven?
For ye have brought
hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
For you have brought these men
here, though they have neither
robbed our temple nor
blasphemed our goddess.
Now when we had discovered
Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to
unlade her burden.
After sighting
Cyprus and passing south of it, we sailed on to Syria and landed at Tyre, where the ship was to unload its
cargo.
I am
verily a man which am a
Jew, born in
Tarsus, a city in
Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of
Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was
zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
“I am a
Jew, born in
Tarsus of
Cilicia, but raised in this city. I was educated at the feet of
Gamaliel in strict conformity to the law of our fathers. I am just as
zealous for God as any of you
here today.
And saw him saying unto me, Make
haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘
Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people
here will not accept your testimony about Me.’
Then said Paul unto him, God shall
smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be
smitten contrary to the law?
Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you
whitewashed wall! You sit
here to judge me according to the law, yet you
yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck.”
I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.
he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers arrive.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in
Herod’s
Praetorium.
But this I
confess unto thee, that after the way which they call
heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
I do
confess to you, however, that I worship the God of our fathers according to the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,
And
herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
In this hope, I
strive always to maintain a clear conscience before God and man.
Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.
who ought to appear before you and bring charges, if they have anything against me.
Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
Otherwise, let these men state for themselves any crime they found in me when I stood before the
Sanhedrin,
Therefore, when they were come
hither, without any delay on the
morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.
So when they came here with me, I did not delay. The next day I sat on the judgment seat and ordered that the man be brought in.
And
Festus said, King
Agrippa, and all men which are
here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also
here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
Then
Festus said, “King
Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man. The whole Jewish community has petitioned me about him, both
here and in Jerusalem, crying out that he ought not to live any longer.
Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
But I have had God’s help to this day, and I stand
here to
testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen:
And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.
Unable to head into the wind, the ship was caught up. So we gave way and let ourselves be driven along.
Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
So then if, while
her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an
adulteress: but if
her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no
adulteress, though she be married to another man.
So then, if she is joined to another man while
her husband is still alive, she is called an
adulteress; but if
her husband dies, she is free from that law and is not an
adulteress, even if she marries another man.
It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
not by works but by Him who calls, she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”
As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
As He says in
Hosea: “I will call them ‘My People’ who are not My people, and I will call
her ‘My Beloved’ who is not My beloved,”
For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
For one person has faith to eat all things, while another, who is weak, eats only vegetables.
That ye receive
her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist
her in
whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.
Welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist
her with anything she may need from you. For she has been a great help to many people, including me.
For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not
hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
My conscience is clear, but that does not
vindicate me. It is the Lord who judges me.
What? know ye not that he which is joined to an
harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
Or don’t you know that he who unites himself with a
prostitute is one with
her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”
Nevertheless, to avoid
fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have
her own husband.
But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.
Let the husband render unto the wife due
benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
The husband should
fulfill his
marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to
her husband.
The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.
And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.
But and if she depart, let
her remain unmarried, or be
reconciled to
her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to
her husband. And a husband must not
divorce his wife.
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not
divorce her.
And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
And if a woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with
her, she must not
divorce him.
For the unbelieving husband is
sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is
sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
For the unbelieving husband is
sanctified through his believing wife, and the unbelieving wife is
sanctified through
her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
However, if someone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his
betrothed, and if she is beyond
her youth and they ought to marry, let him do as he wishes; he is not
sinning; they should get married.
So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.
So then, he who marries the virgin does well, but he who does not marry her does even better.
The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
A wife is bound to
her husband as long as he lives. But if
her husband dies, she is free to marry
anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with
her head uncovered dishonoureth
her head: for that is even all one as if she were
shaven.
And every woman who prays or prophesies with
her head uncovered dishonors
her head, for it is just as if
her head were
shaved.
For if the woman be not covered, let
her also be
shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be
shorn or
shaven, let
her be covered.
If a woman does not cover
her head, she should have
her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have
her hair cut or
shaved off, she should cover
her head.
For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
Judge in
yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
Judge for
yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with
her head uncovered?
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
For there must be also
heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved.
Doth not
behave itself unseemly, seeketh not
her own, is not easily
provoked, thinketh no evil;
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs.
All the brothers
here send you greetings.
Greet one another with a holy
kiss.
Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
So we
aspire to please Him, whether we are
here in this body or away from it.
And
herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.
And this is my opinion about what is helpful for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give, but even to have such a desire.
I told you before, and
foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which
heretofore have
sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not
spare:
For this
Agar is mount
Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in
bondage with
her children.
Now
Hagar stands for Mount
Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with
her children.
For it is written,
Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the
desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
For it is written: “
Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of
her who has a husband.”
Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the
bondwoman and
her son: for the son of the
bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.
But what does the Scripture say? “
Expel the slave woman and
her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her
That he might
sanctify and
cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or
wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without
blemish.
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
With
Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done
here.
With him I am sending
Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything
here.
Salute the brethren which are in
Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house.
But we were gentle among you, even as a
nurse cherisheth
her children:
On the contrary, we were gentle among you, like a
nursing mother caring for
her children.
But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect
patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
Now she that is a widow indeed, and
desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
The widow who is truly in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day in her petitions and prayers.
Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have
lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the
afflicted, if she have
diligently followed every good work.
and well known for good deeds such as bringing up children,
entertaining strangers, washing the feet of the saints, imparting relief to the
afflicted, and
devoting herself to every good work.
This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and
Hermogenes.
You know that
everyone in the Province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and
Hermogenes.
And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And once again: “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.”
And by reason
hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
That is why he is
obligated to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.
For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh
oft upon it, and bringeth forth
herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
For land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is tended receives the blessing of God.
And
here men that die receive
tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
Then I said, ‘
Here I am, it is written about Me in the
scroll: I have come to do Your will, O God.’”
Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Then He adds, “Here I am, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second.
Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
By faith
Sarah, even though she was barren and beyond the proper age, was enabled to conceive a child, because she considered Him faithful who had promised.
For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
For here we do not have a permanent city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.
But let
patience have
her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Allow
perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be
mature and complete, not lacking anything.
And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou
here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit
here under my
footstool:
If you
lavish attention on the man in fine clothes and say, “
Here is a seat of honor,” but say to the poor man, “You must stand” or “Sit at my feet,”
Likewise also was not
Rahab the
harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth yielded its crops.
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your
sojourning here in fear:
Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct
yourselves in
reverent fear during your stay as foreigners.
For even
hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His footsteps:
Even as
Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any
amazement.
just as
Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. And you are
her children if you do what is right and refuse to give way to fear.
Neither as being lords over God’s
heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who
privily shall bring in
damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
Now there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive
heresies, even denying the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.
But it is happened unto them according to the true
proverb, The dog is turned to his own
vomit again; and the
sow that was washed to
her wallowing in the
mire.
Of them the
proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its
vomit,” and, “A
sow that is washed goes back to
her wallowing in the mud.”
And
hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.
But
whoso keepeth his word, in him
verily is the love of God perfected:
hereby know we that we are in him.
But if
anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him:
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
And
hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall
assure our hearts before him.
And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will
assure our hearts in His presence:
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And
hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
By this you will know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us.
Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
We are from God.
Whoever knows God listens to us;
whoever is not from God does not
listen to us. That is how we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of
deception.
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins.
And love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as the
atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit.
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
In this way, love has been perfected among us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment; for in this world we are just like Him.
The elder unto the
elect lady and
her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
The elder, To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I alone, but also all who know the truth—
