And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and
ate it. She also gave some to her
husband who was with her, and he
ate it.
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in
childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your
husband, and he will rule over you.”
And Sarai
Abram’s wife took
Hagar her
maid the Egyptian, after
Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of
Canaan, and gave her to her
husband Abram to be his wife.
So after he had lived in
Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian
maidservant Hagar and gave her to
Abram to be his wife.
And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name
Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my
affliction; now therefore my
husband will love me.
And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him
Reuben, for she said, “The LORD has seen my
affliction. Surely my
husband will love me now.”
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.
And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my
husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And
Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my
husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said
Rachel, “he may sleep with you
tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
And Leah said, God hath given me my
hire, because I have given my
maiden to my
husband: and she called his name
Issachar.
Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my
maidservant to my
husband.” So she named him
Issachar.
And Leah said, God hath
endued me with a good
dowry; now will my
husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name
Zebulun.
“God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my
husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him
Zebulun.
Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the
foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a
bloody husband art thou to me.
But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s
foreskin, and touched it to Moses’ feet. “Surely you are a
bridegroom of blood to me,” she said.
If men
strive, and
hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s
husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
If men who are fighting strike a
pregnant woman and her child is born
prematurely, but there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s
husband demands and as the court allows.
And
whosoever lieth
carnally with a woman, that is a
bondmaid,
betrothed to an
husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be
scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.
If a man lies
carnally with a slave
girl promised to another man but who has not been redeemed or given her freedom, there must be due punishment. But they are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed.
And for his sister a virgin, that is
nigh unto him, which hath had no
husband; for her may he be
defiled.
or his unmarried sister who is near to him, since she has no husband.
They shall not take a wife that is a
whore, or
profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her
husband: for he is holy unto his God.
And a man lie with her
carnally, and it be
hid from the eyes of her
husband, and be kept close, and she be
defiled, and there be no witness against her, neither she be taken with the manner;
by sleeping with another man, and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act),
And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be
jealous of his wife, and she be
defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be
jealous of his wife, and she be not
defiled:
and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her
husband and he suspects his wife who has
defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not
defiled herself—
And the priest shall charge her by an oath, and say unto the woman, If no man have
lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness with another instead of thy
husband, be thou free from this bitter water that causeth the
curse:
And he is to put the woman under oath and say to her, ‘If no other man has
slept with you and you have not gone
astray and become
defiled while under your
husband’s authority, may you be
immune to this bitter water that brings a
curse.
But if thou hast gone aside to another instead of thy
husband, and if thou be
defiled, and some man have
lain with thee beside thine
husband:
And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be
defiled, and have done
trespass against her
husband, that the water that causeth the
curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her
belly shall swell, and her
thigh shall
rot: and the woman shall be a
curse among her people.
When he has made her drink the water, if she has
defiled herself and been unfaithful to her
husband, then the water that brings a
curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her
belly will swell, her
thigh will
shrivel, and she will become
accursed among her people.
This is the law of
jealousies, when a wife goeth aside to another instead of her
husband, and is
defiled;
This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes
astray and defiles herself while under her
husband’s authority,
Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and he be
jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall
execute upon her all this law.
or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law.
Then shall the man be guiltless from iniquity, and this woman shall bear her iniquity.
The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.”
And if she had at all an
husband, when she
vowed, or uttered ought out of her lips,
wherewith she bound her soul;
If a woman marries while under a
vow or
rash promise by which she has bound herself,
And her
husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds
wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her on that day, then the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
But if her
husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it; then he shall make her
vow which she
vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips,
wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the LORD shall
forgive her.
But if her
husband prohibits her when he hears of it, he nullifies the
vow that binds her or the
rash promise she has made, and the LORD will
absolve her.
And if she
vowed in her
husband’s house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath;
If a woman in her
husband’s house has made a
vow or put herself under an obligation with an oath,
And her
husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond
wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
and her
husband hears of it but says nothing to her and does not
prohibit her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
But if her
husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard them; then
whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her
husband hath made them void; and the LORD shall
forgive her.
But if her
husband nullifies them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or pledges, shall stand. Her
husband has
nullified them, and the LORD will
absolve her.
Every
vow, and every binding oath to
afflict the soul, her
husband may establish it, or her
husband may make it void.
But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.
But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them.
And she shall put the
raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and
bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her
husband, and she shall be thy wife.
and put aside the clothing of her captivity. After she has lived in your house a full month and
mourned her father and mother, you may have relations with her and be her
husband, and she shall be your wife.
If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.
If a man is found lying with another man’s wife, both the man who
slept with her and the woman must die. You must
purge the evil from Israel.
If a
damsel that is a virgin be
betrothed unto an
husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
If there is a virgin
pledged in marriage to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and sleeps with her,
And if the latter
husband hate her, and write her a bill of
divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter
husband die, which took her to be his wife;
and the second man hates her, writes her a
certificate of
divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house, or if he dies,
Her former
husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is
defiled; for that is
abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
then the
husband who
divorced her first may not remarry her after she has been
defiled, for that is an
abomination to the LORD. You must not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
When brothers dwell together and one of them dies without a son, the widow must not marry outside the family. Her
husband’s brother is to take her as his wife and
fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for her.
And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.
But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He is not willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.”
When men
strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her
husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:
If two men are fighting, and the wife of one steps in to
rescue her
husband from the one striking him, and she reaches out her hand and grabs his
genitals,
The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not
adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the
husband of her
bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,
The most gentle and refined woman among you, so gentle and refined she would not
venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground, will
begrudge the
husband she embraces and her son and daughter
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and told her
husband, “A man of God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name.
And God
hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but
Manoah her
husband was not with her.
And God
listened to the voice of
Manoah, and the angel of God returned to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but her
husband Manoah was not with her.
And the woman made
haste, and ran, and shewed her
husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day.
The woman ran quickly to tell her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has reappeared!”
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy
husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your
husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And her
husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of
asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the
damsel saw him, he
rejoiced to meet him.
her
husband got up and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back, taking his servant and a pair of
donkeys. So the
girl brought him into her father’s house, and when her father saw him, he
gladly welcomed him.
And the
Levite, the
husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my
concubine, to
lodge.
So the
Levite, the
husband of the murdered woman, answered: “I and my
concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to
spend the night.
And Elimelech
Naomi’s
husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
Then
Naomi’s
husband Elimelech died, and she was left with her two sons,
And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and
Naomi was left without her two sons and without her
husband.
The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her
husband. Then she
kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and
wept.
May the LORD enable each of you to find rest in the home of your new
husband.” And she
kissed them as they
wept aloud And
Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my
womb, that they may be your
husbands?
But
Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you go with me? Are there still sons in my
womb to become your
husbands?
Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to have another
husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me to have a
husband tonight and to bear sons,
Would ye
tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having
husbands?
nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.
would you wait for them to grow up? Would you
refrain from having
husbands? No, my daughters, it grieves me very much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD has gone out against me.”
And
Naomi had a
kinsman of her
husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
Now
Naomi had a relative on her
husband’s side, a prominent man of noble character from the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine
husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
Then said Elkanah her
husband to her,
Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart
grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
“
Hannah, why are you crying?” her
husband Elkanah asked. “Why won’t you eat? Why is your heart so
grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
But
Hannah went not up; for she said unto her
husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there
abide for ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “After the boy is
weaned,” she said to her
husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
And Elkanah her
husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good;
tarry until thou have
weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son
suck until she
weaned him.
“Do what you think is best,” her
husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you have
weaned him. Only may the LORD
confirm His word.” So
Hannah stayed and
nursed her son until she had
weaned him.
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Each year his mother would make him a little
robe and bring it to him when she went with her
husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her
husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her
husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife
Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was
churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of
Caleb.
His name was Nabal, and his wife’s name was
Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her
husband, a Calebite, was harsh and evil in his dealings.
And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.
and said to her young men, “Go
ahead of me. I will be right behind you.” But she did not tell her
husband Nabal.
And
Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her
husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.
So
Ish-bosheth sent and took Michal from her
husband Paltiel son of Laish.
And her
husband went with her along
weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said
Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.
Her
husband followed her,
weeping all the way to Bahurim. Then
Abner said to him, “Go back.” So he returned home.
And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her
husband was dead, she
mourned for her
husband.
When Uriah’s wife heard that her
husband was dead, she
mourned for him.
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
“What troubles you?” the king asked her. “Indeed,” she said, “I am a widow, for my husband is dead.
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my
husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my
husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.
and bring all the people back to you as a
bride returning to her
husband. You seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be at peace.”
Now there
cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto
Elisha, saying, Thy servant my
husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the
creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be
bondmen.
Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets
cried out to
Elisha, “Your servant, my
husband, is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And now his
creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves!”
And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.
Then the woman said to her husband, “Behold, now I know that the one who often comes our way is a holy man of God.
And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered,
Verily she hath no child, and her
husband is old.
So he asked, “Then what should be done for her?” “Well, she has no son,” Gehazi replied, “and her husband is old.”
And she called unto her
husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the
asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.
And the woman called her
husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the
donkeys, that I may go quickly to the man of God and return.”
Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.
Please run out now to meet her and ask, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’” And she answered, “Everything is all right.”
But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vinedressers and
husbandmen.
But the captain of the guard left behind some of the poorest of the land to tend the vineyards and fields.
Also he built towers in the desert, and
digged many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains:
husbandmen also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in
Carmel: for he loved
husbandry.
Since he had much
livestock in the foothills and in the plain, he built towers in the desert and
dug many cisterns. And since he was a lover of the soil, he had farmers and vinedressers in the hill country and in the fertile fields.
For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall
despise their
husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king
Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
For the conduct of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to
despise their
husbands and say, ‘King
Xerxes ordered Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she did not come.’
And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
The edict the king issues will be heard throughout his vast kingdom—and so all women, from the least to the greatest, will honor their husbands.”
For jealousy enrages a
husband, and he will show no mercy in the day of
vengeance.
For the
goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey.
A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but she who causes shame is like decay in his bones.
The heart of her
husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of
spoil.
The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he lacks nothing of value.
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
Her husband is known at the city gate, where he sits among the elders of the land.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband praises her as well:
Sing, O barren, thou that
didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry
aloud, thou that
didst not
travail with child: for more are the children of the
desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
“
Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth in song and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a
husband,” says the LORD.
For thy Maker is thine
husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy
Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
For your
husband is your Maker— the LORD of Hosts is His name— the Holy One of Israel is your
Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.
Surely as a wife
treacherously departeth from her
husband, so have ye dealt
treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.
But as a woman may
betray her
husband, so you have
betrayed Me, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD.
Therefore I am full of the
fury of the LORD; I am
weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the
husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.
But I am full of the LORD’s wrath; I am
tired of holding it back. “Pour it out on the children in the street, and on the young men gathered together. For both
husband and wife will be captured, the old and the very old alike.
Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be
bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.
Therefore, hand their children over to famine; pour out the power of the sword upon them. Let their wives become childless and widowed; let their husbands be slain by disease, their young men struck down by the sword in battle.
Take ye wives, and
beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to
husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.
Take wives and have sons and daughters. Take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Multiply there; do not decrease.
And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together,
husbandmen, and they that go forth with flocks.
And Judah and all its cities will dwell together in the land, the farmers and those who move with the flocks,
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they
brake, although I was an
husband unto them, saith the LORD:
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt— a covenant they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD.
And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
“Moreover,” said the women, “when we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our
husbands’ knowledge that we made
sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
I will also break in pieces with thee the
shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the
husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers.
But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vinedressers and for
husbandmen.
But Nebuzaradan captain of the guard left behind some of the poorest of the land to tend the vineyards and fields.
But as a wife that committeth
adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her
husband!
You
adulterous wife! You receive strangers instead of your own
husband!
Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her
husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which
lothed their
husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.
You are the daughter of your mother, who
despised her
husband and children. You are the sister of your sisters, who
despised their
husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
And they shall come at no dead person to
defile themselves: but for father, or for mother, or for son, or for daughter, for brother, or for sister that hath had no
husband, they may
defile themselves.
A priest must not
defile himself by going near a dead person. However, for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister, he may do so,
Plead with your mother,
plead: for she is not my wife, neither am I her
husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her
adulteries from between her breasts;
Rebuke your mother,
rebuke her, for she is not My wife, and I am not her
husband. Let her remove the
adultery from her face and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.
She will pursue her lovers but not catch them; she will seek them but not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will return to my first husband, for then I was better off than now.’
And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali.
In that day,” declares the LORD, “you will call Me ‘my Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘my Master.’
