May my prayer be set before You like
incense, my
uplifted hands like the evening offering.
Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to
practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their
dainties.
Do not let my heart be drawn to any evil thing or take part in works of wickedness with men who do iniquity; let me not feast on their
delicacies.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
let the wise
listen and gain instruction, and the
discerning acquire wise counsel
So that thou
incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
if you
incline your ear to wisdom and direct your heart to understanding,
For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
For her house sinks down to death, and her tracks to the departed spirits.
Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest;
My son, attend to my words;
incline thine ear unto my sayings.
My son, pay attention to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
incline your ear to my insight,
And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor
inclined mine ear to them that
instructed me!
I did not
listen to the voice of my teachers or
incline my ear to my mentors.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man, and he will
increase his learning.

gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall
increase.

treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

increaseth learning.

belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the
increase of his lips shall he be filled.

belly is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied.

robber she lies in wait and multiplies the faithless among men.

increaseth strength.

usury and unjust gain
increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will

gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem:

He who loves money is never satisfied by money, and he who loves wealth is never satisfied by
income. This too is
futile.
When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
When good things
increase, so do those who
consume them; what then is the profit to the owner, except to behold them with his eyes?
Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
For the more words, the more
futility—and how does that profit
anyone?

fool’s heart at his left.
A wise man’s heart
inclines to the right, but the heart of a
fool to the left.
A garden
inclosed is my sister, my
spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.
My sister, my
bride, you are a garden locked up, a spring enclosed, a fountain sealed.
If she be a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will
inclose her with boards of
cedar.
If she is a wall, we will build a tower of silver upon her. If she is a door, we will
enclose her with panels of
cedar.
Bring no more vain oblations;
incense is an
abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of
assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
Bring your worthless offerings no more; your
incense is
detestable to Me— your New Moons, Sabbaths, and convocations. I cannot
endure iniquity in a solemn assembly.
Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not
increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men
rejoice when they divide the
spoil.
You have enlarged the nation and
increased its joy. The people
rejoice before You as they
rejoice at harvest time, as men
rejoice in dividing the
plunder.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and
sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will
accomplish this.
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.

In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to
flourish: but the harvest shall be a
heap in the day of grief and of
desperate sorrow.

sprout— yet the harvest will
vanish on the day of disease and
incurable pain.
And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
“So I will
incite Egyptian against Egyptian; brother will fight against brother,
neighbor against
neighbor, city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
Thou hast
increased the nation, O LORD, thou hast
increased the nation: thou art
glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth.
You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; You have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for
Yourself; You have extended all the borders of the land.
By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be
purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in
sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.
Therefore Jacob’s guilt will be
atoned for, and the full fruit of the removal of his sin will be this: When he makes all the altar stones like
crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or
incense altars will remain standing.
The
meek also shall
increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall
rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
The humble will
increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men will
rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt
sow the ground
withal; and bread of the
increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and
plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
Then He will send rain for the seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food that comes from your land will be rich and
plentiful. On that day your cattle will
graze in open pastures.
Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of
Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see.
Listen to all the words that
Sennacherib has sent to
defy the living God.
He giveth power to the
faint; and to them that have no might he
increaseth strength.
He gives power to the
faint and
increases the strength of the weak.
Behold, all they that were
incensed against thee shall be
ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that
strive with thee shall perish.
Behold, all who
rage against you will be
ashamed and disgraced; those who
contend with you will be reduced to nothing and will perish.
Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor
wearied thee with
incense.
You have not brought Me sheep for burnt offerings, nor honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, nor
wearied you with
frankincense.
Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are
incensed against him shall be
ashamed.
Surely they will say of Me, ‘In the LORD alone are righteousness and strength.’” All who
rage against Him will come to Him and be put to shame.
Look unto Abraham your father, and unto
Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and
increased him.
Look to Abraham your father, and to
Sarah who gave you birth. When I called him, he was but one; then I blessed him and multiplied him.
Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an
everlasting covenant with you, even the sure
mercies of David.
Incline your ear and come to Me;
listen, so that your soul may live. I will make with you an
everlasting covenant— My loving devotion promised to David.
You went to
Molech with oil and multiplied your perfumes. You have sent your envoys a great distance; you have descended even to
Sheol itself.
The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the
dromedaries of
Midian and
Ephah; all they from
Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and
incense; and they shall
shew forth the praises of the LORD.
A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;
to a people who continually
provoke Me to My face, sacrificing in the gardens and burning
incense on altars of brick,
Your
iniquities, and the
iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned
incense upon the mountains, and
blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their
bosom.
both for your
iniquities and for those of your fathers,” says the LORD. “Because they burned
incense on the mountains and
scorned Me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their former deeds.”
He that killeth an ox is as if he
slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an
oblation, as if he offered
swine’s blood; he that burneth
incense, as if he blessed an
idol.
Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man;
whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood;
whoever offers
frankincense is like one who blesses an
idol. Indeed, they have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations.
And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have
forsaken me, and have burned
incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.
I will
pronounce My judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they have
forsaken Me to burn
incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.
Israel was
holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his
increase: all that
devour him shall
offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.
Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of His harvest. All who
devoured her found themselves guilty;
disaster came upon them,’” declares the LORD.
And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
“In those days, when you multiply and
increase in the land,” declares the LORD, “they will no longer
discuss the ark of the covenant of the LORD. It will never come to mind, and no one will remember it or miss it, nor will another one be made.
Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall
slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall
spoil them, a
leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be
torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are
increased.
Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down, a wolf from the desert will
ravage them. A
leopard will lie in wait near their cities, and
everyone who ventures out will be
torn to pieces. For their
rebellious acts are many, and their unfaithful deeds are numerous.
To what purpose cometh there to me
incense from
Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.
What use to Me is
frankincense from
Sheba or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please Me.”
Will ye
steal, murder, and commit
adultery, and
swear falsely, and burn
incense unto
Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
Will you
steal and murder, commit
adultery and
perjury, burn
incense to
Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known,
But they
hearkened not, nor
inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
Yet they did not
listen or
incline their ear, but they followed the
stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.
Yet they
hearkened not unto me, nor
inclined their ear, but
hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.
Yet they would not
listen to Me or
incline their ear, but they
stiffened their necks and did more evil than their fathers.
Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.
Yet they would not obey or
incline their ears, but each one followed the
stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant I had commanded them to follow but they did not keep.”
Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to which they have been burning
incense, but these gods certainly will not save them in their time of
disaster.
For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn
incense unto
Baal.
Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, O Judah; the altars of shame you have set up—the altars to burn
incense to
Baal—are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’
For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to
provoke me to anger in offering
incense unto
Baal.
The LORD of Hosts, who planted you, has decreed
disaster against you on account of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have brought upon themselves,
provoking Me to anger by burning
incense to
Baal.”
Their widows are
increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a
spoiler at
noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.
I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. I will bring a destroyer at
noon against the mothers of young men. I will suddenly bring upon them
anguish and dismay.
Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound
incurable, which refuseth to be
healed?
wilt thou be altogether unto me as a
liar, and as waters that fail?
Why is my pain unending, and my wound
incurable, refusing to be
healed? You have indeed become like a
mirage to me— water that is not there.
But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.
And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the LORD.
And people will come from the cities of Judah and the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, and from the foothills, the hill country, and the Negev, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and
frankincense, and
thank offerings to the house of the LORD.
Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned
incense to vanity, and they have caused them to
stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
Yet My people have forgotten Me. They burn
incense to worthless idols that make them
stumble in their ways, leaving the ancient roads to walk on
rutted bypaths instead of on the
highway.
Because they have
forsaken me, and have
estranged this place, and have burned
incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
because they have abandoned Me and made this a foreign place. They have burned incense in this place to other gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have ever known. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.
And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be
defiled as the place of
Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned
incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.
The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be
defiled like that place, Topheth—all the houses on whose rooftops they burned
incense to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”
And I will gather the
remnant of my flock out of all countries
whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and
increase.
Then I Myself will gather the
remnant of My flock from all the lands to which I have banished them, and I will return them to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and multiply.
And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not
hearkened, nor
inclined your ear to hear.
And the LORD has sent all His servants the prophets to you again and again, but you have not
listened or
inclined your ear to hear.
Take ye wives, and
beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be
increased there, and not diminished.
Take wives and have sons and daughters. Take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Multiply there; do not decrease.
For thus saith the LORD, Thy
bruise is
incurable, and thy wound is
grievous.
For this is what the LORD says: “Your injury is
incurable; your wound is
grievous.
All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the
chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were
increased.
All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer seek you, for I have struck you as an enemy would, with the discipline of someone cruel, because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins.
Why criest thou for thine
affliction? thy sorrow is
incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were
increased, I have done these things unto thee.
Why do you cry out over your wound? Your pain has no cure! Because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins I have done these things to you.
Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the
lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the
farthest parts of the earth,
including the blind and the
lame,
expectant mothers and women in labor. They will return as a great assembly!
And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered
incense unto
Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to
provoke me to anger.
And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come in, set it on fire, and burn it, along with the houses of those who
provoked Me to anger by burning
incense to
Baal on their rooftops and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.
At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers
hearkened not unto me, neither
inclined their ear.
Every seventh year, each of you must free his Hebrew brother who has sold himself to you. He may serve you six years, but then you must let him go free. But your fathers did not
listen or
incline their ear.
I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and
amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not
inclined your ear, nor
hearkened unto me.
Again and again I have sent you all My servants the prophets,
proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do not go after other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have not
inclined your ear or
listened to Me.
That there came certain from
Shechem, from
Shiloh, and from Samaria, even
fourscore men, having their beards
shaven, and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with offerings and
incense in their hand, to bring them to the house of the LORD.
eighty men who had
shaved off their beards,
torn their garments, and cut themselves came from
Shechem,
Shiloh, and Samaria, carrying grain offerings and
frankincense for the house of the LORD.
But
Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away
captives into Babylon.
Rather,
Baruch son of Neriah is
inciting you against us to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, so that they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon!”
Because of their wickedness which they have committed to
provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn
incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.
because of the evil they have done. They
provoked Me to anger by continuing to burn
incense and to serve other gods that neither they nor you nor your fathers ever knew.
But they
hearkened not, nor
inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no
incense unto other gods.
But they did not
listen or
incline their ears; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning
incense to other gods.
In that ye
provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands, burning
incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt,
whither ye be gone to dwell, that ye might cut
yourselves off, and that ye might be a
curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?
Why are you
provoking Me to anger by the work of your hands by burning
incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to reside? As a result, you will be cut off and will become an object of
cursing and reproach among all the nations of the earth.
Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah,
But we will certainly do
whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn
incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we
plenty of
victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
Instead, we will do everything we
vowed to do: We will burn
incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had
plenty of food and good things, and we saw no
disaster.
But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
But from the time we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been perishing by sword and famine.”
And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
“Moreover,” said the women, “when we burned
incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands’ knowledge that we made
sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind?
“As for the incense you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem—you, your fathers, your kings, your officials, and the people of the land—did the LORD not remember and bring this to mind?
Because ye have burned
incense, and because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his
testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
Because you burned
incense and
sinned against the LORD, and did not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in His instruction, His statutes, and His
testimonies, this
disaster has
befallen you, as you see
today.”
Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the LORD, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt:
Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women, “Hear the word of the LORD, all those of Judah who are in the land of Egypt.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have
vowed, to burn
incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely
accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands your words: ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made to burn
incense to the Queen of Heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Go
ahead, then, do what you have promised! Keep your vows!
Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.
In Moab, declares the LORD, I will bring an end to those who make offerings on the high places and burn incense to their gods.
The Lord was as an enemy: he hath
swallowed up Israel, he hath
swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath
increased in the daughter of Judah
mourning and
lamentation.
The Lord is like an enemy; He has
swallowed up Israel. He has
swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed her strongholds. He has multiplied
mourning and
lamentation for the Daughter of Judah.
